People love the Apes. When we went to see Planet at the Ziegfeld in March, a few members came as Apes. People just loved them. They stopped on the street to take pictures. It was really a positive reaction.

Thank you!
There's a not terrible good Canadian show about Hollywood and television called "The Industry", but it had an episode where they were making a Hercules ripoff of Xena, and they had watched a new type of Euro new wave cinema that used no lighting, and a guy asked how it was different from Canadian film making and he said they use "Bad" Lighting.  I think it was a gaffer or cinematographer who was asking the great James Wong Howe advice for the lighting of Sounder, and he said there is no Source Lighting.  Look at my films, there is no justification for source.  The same is true for POTA.  We don't know  what they used for light.  I don't remember any candles and only a torch or two.  Don't even get me started on the hand held camera work these days for films like the Bourne movies.  What a cheap trick to put the audience on edge by churning their stomachs, and cheat them out of a good action sequence with sloppy camera work.  Feck!

I love their Dracula movies.
Some sucked but they were still a pleasure to watch.
Like the classic Kung Fu movies, every frame a painting!

Though I'm sure their may have been some discussions along those lines, I think we read a lot into the behind the scenes prep that went into the making of it, maybe analyzing it more after the fact than they did before making it.  And just as an Australopithecus is an ape that took a step up the evolutionary ladder, though we might no longer consider him an ape, we might also not consider him fully human.

I would also say that the look of the original Apes suggested that they had taken a step up in evolution and were not just primitive apes who somehow learned to talk.

Yeah just about nothing in Star Wars is technologically realistic.  But then that's a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.  But as someone once asked, If Wile E. Coyote has money enough for all that ACME stuff why doesn't he just buy dinner?

James <JamesA1102@...> wrote:
Paul Dehn wrote the original treatment. FOX and Jacobs thought it was way too dark and wanted to make a more upbeat film. Dehn fell ill and wasn't able to do the rewrite.
The Corringtons were brought in and they completely overhauled and rewrote Dehn's story. They did however maintain several characters like Aldo & Mendez and plot points such as the Alpha-Omega bomb, Aldo's plotting against Caesar and killing a family member (in Dehn's original it was Lisa, not Cornelius). FOX and Jacobs approved the treatment and commissioned the Corringtons to write the full script. When they delivered it J. Lee Thompson and others were unhappy with it so the Corringtons were fired. By then Dehn had recovered and was brought in to rewrite the script. It was his final version that was filmed.
The biggest change that Dehn made was the ending. In the Corrington's version the film ends with an Ape and Human child getting into a violent schoolyard fight. Dehn changed it to the tear on the statue. When the Corrington's saw the film they were very upset about the new ending. They, of course, thought their's was better.

Pretty good Planet of the Apes costumes. One of the may types of suprises you get at the Con when you tunr a corner. But far fewer people are in costume than the media make you think. And even less are just there on their own. ...

Hi all,
I just want to say thanks for all of you who welcomed
me. I've never encountered this from a group before.
Jessica, I live in NY and it turns out so does Scott
B. who bTW has a great collection of POTA stuff. One
thing that I could believe was his chip suit that was
made for him by Mego when he aided them with the
toyline. Incredible.
I hope he doesn't get mad for me posting this?!
Scott, sorry, but as you know I no longer have my POTA
stuff and seeing it again is exciting.

As far as I know, we were the only apes days 2 and 3.  Friday: I was Marcus, Trey was Julius, Lacey was Zira, Stephanie was Nova.  Saturday: I was Julius (wearing my son's WET prosthetics from Friday), Lacey was Nova, and Lexi was a young human female.  Apparently on Sunday there were 2 guys dressed up as gorillas.  I never saw them, but here are pics of them.  Stephanie was our photographer, but only took "in process" pics.  All the pics I am getting are off the internet.  We found 1 GREAT pic that appeared somewhere. I'm still trying to refind it.  We're all looking at one guy and Zira is looking dirctly at this other guys camera.

Mmmm.  Those new HD featurettes might just be quickies with a running time of 10 mins ea.
Nothing said about:
Missing footage from PLANET, and ESCAPE.
What about the trailers: are we getting the same ol'ones, yet again.  No Mention of TV spots, radio spots?
I wonder if it's a true restored edition of CONQUEST or are they going to do an ALIEN 3?
Also, with all the room on the Blu disc BOTH versions of CONQUEST should be made available - even via bridging.
Also, what's the use of have lossless audio in 5.1 if they are the same 5.1 mixes previously release - that weren't don't as well as they could have been.  It didn't say new re-mixes.
...and the price?
At least for it didn't say that CONQUEST was a Blu exclusive so maybe those who can't afford Blu might be able to get a standard release.
Well, it all sound "kinda" nice but not what it should be.
As we get closer it will officially posted as a pre-order with maybe more details.

new Conquest. Also, I'd like confirmation that Battle is the long version.

The part I loved was an audio commentary with dead people.  Ooooo we're going to get sound bits edited together to make an audio commentary.
That is unless the power of Blu has a new feature we don't know about which allows the player to be a ouja board and connect with the Great Beyond?!

No Beneath NATO film? URGH!!! I'm also concerned, the running time
listed for Battle is the theatrical length, not Extended. Looks like
all hype and little effort once again. Maybe deleted escape & planet
footage will be in the Docs.

Fox sucks at user innovation.  Like most companies, they decide what they're going to give the customer instead of giving the consumer what they want.  BMW is he same way.  They spent millions on a technological suggestion box and only use one or two ideas a year.  Not that there aren't more good ideas than that.  But like most physical suggestion boxes, at the end of the week, they just empty it in the trash.

After speaking with a contact at FOX it's been confirmed that BOTH
versions of BATTLE will be on the disc via branching.

Also, I inquired about the 5.1 mixes - "are they the same from the
previous release?" The answer was newly re-mixed 5.1 soundtracks were
made for the Blu release. If this indeed true at least there's hope of
more being done to take advantage of what 5.1 can offer.

Also, I inquired about the trailers. Going by what they responded it
seems we will only get what we've had previous.

I also asked if there were any plans to re-visit either the animated or
live action TV series for Blu - the answer was, "for now, no plans."

Hope this answers a few more questions.

My guess is since they are STILL pushing that Ape Head at a lower price I don't see them opening returns and filling it with new DVD from newer masters. So that is probably something to stay away from.  Truthfully I would even keep away from any newly packaged standard release unless it shows details on what is exactly inside.
I know WARNERS did this with Harry Potter recently.  The first film had had a horrible master from the day it was put out.  In fact I gave it such a bad review, complete with screen grabs comparing the color to the trailer which had better color - they said I would have to take down the screen caps or be taken off the list for future review copies.  (It turned out they used such a low bit rate the film lost its color detail needing a higher bit rate to better handle the darker photography.  You see, depending on how their contract is signed with the digital duplicator a higher bit rate can cost more.  In any case, I didn't take down the review and was taken off the list.
Seems WB just repackaged the Harry Potters but used old master for the current re-selling.  However the Bluray editions are indeed new masters.  I bet FOX will do the same for the new POTA releases - unless other stated on the packaging.  I can see them putting out the new master for PLANET, and maybe CONQUEST - but not the others.
I will try to find out more.  Also, the Blu set containing all POTA films is supposed to be packaged in a special way - but I don't know what that may be.  As soon as I find out I will forward that to the group.

It states two different list prices, at the top $159.98, the bottom
it says $179.98. Also will both versions of Conquest be on the disc?

Hi,
I did a scan of a small article printed in a retailer's publication
magazine on POTA Film on Blu. Even though at this point we know the
info stated I think it such a piece of crap and PR from the mouth of
FOX itself. Since this is for Retailers and the like it amazing how
people can be taken with slick worlds.
I swear, being involved in the Home Video realm since it began I've
seen it change so much. In the beginning it was new and made up of
those from the theatrical division then through the year those people
retired and newbies took their place not know anything about the
theatrical end, or movies in general. Instead it became populated by
slick side-show like snakes more akin to the porn industy in a classic
sterotype way.
Anyway, it make for a disguesting read. Bring a shovel. The article is
in the PHOTO section under BLU MOCK-UPS It was actually from an adobe
online version of the magazine so I had to do a screen grab.

Yeah, I don't like what I'm reading here either.  Too much recycled stuff.  I can't believe they'll preset us AGAIN with those mostly dead space commentaries.  Why not all new commentaries?

I don't know.... I just don't know.  Back at the end of March, when I first heard of this, I found out what a rush Fox was putting on the creation of the new featurettes, and my first thought was, "It sounds like a total rush job."  I suspect the new transfers may have problems.

Those new HD featurettes might just be quickies with a running time of 10 mins ea.
I'm told 12 minutes each.  Nothing to get excied about as far as I'm concerned.  Things I wanted to see: all new commentaries, including one of those Nick Redman "score" commentaries, and it says all the sequels with have isolated scores, BUT they seem unaware that the 35th anniversary edition of PLANET failed to provide an isolated score.

Maybe there are further details to come?

Hi gang--Joe Russo here--Well,yes they seem to again be using
Mr.Greene quite a bit again (he IS a very rapid-fire
commentator, which is what they always look for). I wasn't contacted
by my ""buddy Kevin Burns when they did the BEHIND documentary, but I
WAS interviewed on-camera for use in the new blu-ray documentaries. To
be honest, I had NO preparation time and it's been quite a few years
since I fired-up my APES I.Q , but they were happy with what I WAS
able to contribute.I tried to get my audio interviews with actors "no
longer here" (i.e,Heston,Franciscus,Gregory,McDowall,Hunter,Chambers)
onto the Blu-rays for audio commentary use,but the producers decided
against using them, perhaps because some of the audio quality was
substandard (they were mostly done on cassettes in 1983-86).In any
event, I am just as curious as all of you as to see exactly what's
been done here!

I think FOX is doing what other companies do - they used the same people for whatever reason and then re-use the water like it came from a swamp.  I've experienced it before as a consultant.  They are also taking the easy way out.  Personally I don't care about newly produced material.  The only people I would want to hear from are now dead.  FOX missed the boat years ago.  There is still old stuff in their archives that should be addressed.  Unless it comes from the actual production people or those who acted in the films I feel it's all a one time view or listen.
They seem to avoid in really search their vaults for stuff.  But what really sickens me is we get glimpses of what is there, showing up in documentaries.  Trailers and behind the scenes material.  I will be furious if the prologue from ESCAPE shows up not at bonus material but part of a documentary, edited.

    Dear Zach,

I love Peter Jacksons work and I think he would have done a great job with the apes him being a fan.
There's a great book called: Peter Jackson. A film Makers Journey. by Peter Sibley that gives the whole tale in Jacksons own words. The producer at Fox who Jackson and his wife Fran went to see with Roddy McDowall didn't seem to know who Roddy was or know about the apes franchise.

It would have been a great film and Jackson would have opened it out whilst staying faithfull to the original designs and story line.

Nice to talk to you Zach.

John, that would have been wonderful.  Burton's movie stank big time.  I think I'd mentioned this before, but when I first heard of the 2001 APES I thought that it would've been just that--it would've continued the story after BATTLE.  Instead, what we got was an awful 're-imagining' --there were no references to the original characters (Zira, Cornelius, Taylor, Armando, Caesar, etc.) and personally, as far as I'm concerned, the 2001 version was a confusing, listless movie.  It deserves being in the cut-out bin.

Peter Jackson's POTA would have been something to see. He was going to take it from where Battle left off. The apes movie he had planned also had Roddy on board as an ape artist come old wise ape. It would tell the story of how the apes split into fractions and how the human population were exterminated and those left, living like animals in the deserts and forests.  He was going to use the original designs taken a step further. This ties in with the other posts on the time line etc.

He is obviously an apes fan as he and a friend made an apes movie with costumes and home made prosthetics when they were kids.
In the Lord of the Rings extras you see a full (Apemania?) costumed gorilla manaquin sitting in his office.
It's a sad tale that the (then) managment of Fox didnt want to do it and were very disrespectful to Roddy in the meetings.

Once again, Rory, you hit the nail right on the head!

What I really wish is that they could have made another movie right after the time of BATTLE.

I think that I've mentioned in the past that there could've been whole movies made bridging the events between sequels.  Fortunately, we do have superb timelines like the Hasslein Curve that wonderfully does that for us.

It's a sad tale that the (then) managment of Fox didnt want to do it and were very disrespectful to Roddy in the meetings .

IMHO I don't think they will make another one, but we can all keep our fingers crossed and hope they do.

I'd like your opinion,...do any of you think we'll ever see another
Planet of the Apes movie after the one Tim Burton did?? I'd love to see
another one done myself. I have to be honest, though, I'd love to see
another director's take on the series though. Tim did a good job on the
POTA remake but I feel it could've been alot better. I have it in my
collection along with all my other POTA DVDs and series.

            Hi,
I did a scan of a small article printed in a retailer's publication
magazine on POTA Film on Blu.

There are no missing pieces from Planet. The film we see today is the same film that was released in 1968. Nothing needs to be restored. Any scenes left on the cutting room floor were left out of the final cut due to creative decisions made by Franklin Schaffner and Arthur P. Jacobs. While it would be great to include those deleted scenes as a bonus feature, no one should tamper with Schaffer's and Jacob's masterpiece.

If you're going to put that much into it
then go the extra mile and shoot on film.
I don't want to hear "Well, we spent all our
budget on costumes and makeup."  Then
you need to get a bigger budget.  Don't
cheat the customer.  The customer is king.
Don't do it half-assed and ride the coattails
of a classic.  Take a lesson from Burton.
That's what Fox did to all the sequels.

I sent some high res pics of my collection to the guy producing that one feature and he said that they were going to use some of them! I have no idea how many , if any he will use. I was kind of hoping Fox would like the pics so much I'd get my own gallery on the disc but that ain't happening!!! lol

Subject: [pota] Added an article on Bluray POTA

              Hi,
I did a scan of a small article printed in a retailer's publication
magazine on POTA Film on Blu.
              -Scott B.

Those are NOT apes from the films - they're new guys.  In fact, that creepy orangutan is there.  I guess FOX hasn't changes - they still don't know who Roddy is.
...and there's something else I don't get - if BLU is supposed to hold sooooooooo much data WHY THE HELL are there 5 discs?!  BENEATH & ESCAPE should fit on one disc easy without ruining quality.  I can see PLANET with all the extras on one disc.  Truthfully both CONQUEST and BATTLE could be on one disc since they are supposed to be used digital branching - which saves room.  With all this extra space on each disc they should be SAVING THE CONSUMER MONEY.  At the very least, it should be 4 discs which would knock off about $30 from the set.
What's the point of pushing all this room on discs if 1. The studios don't take advantage to put more stuff on the disc  or  2. Condense the amount of disc in a set to bring down the price.
              Sorry, this smells.
              Scott B.

I hope you're either getting paid, or at least getting a gradis copy of the DVD when it comes out.  You shouldn't let FOX just use your stuff when they are the ones making money out of YOUR COLLECTION.  It's akin to rape.  Don't shrug your shoulders, make sure you get "something" for what's yours.

For the reason you said: if they released it as a 2-disc set, no one
would pay $160 for it. It doesn't really cost them that much to put
it on more discs, and they can justify their price (to themselves)
              this way.

As it stands now, I doubt that I'll be getting this set, since I don't
have an HD TV or a BR player....

your right it smells, because were getting crapped on again by fox.and the reason there is 5 discs is so they can justify over charging you .instead of 25-35  cost they can charge well over a hundred.  goapebilly

What's the point of pushing all this room on discs if 1. The studios don't take advantage to put more stuff on the disc  or  2. Condense the amount of disc in a set to bring down the price.

My curiosity is dropping like a stone, not about the transfers or the unedited CONQUEST, but based on what I've seen of "Brand new featurettes" on other recent Fox DVDs, these things are nothing more than quick, talking heads fluff pieces that are hardly worth the 10 to 12 minutes you spend watching them.

Still, I'm not yet ready to be as negative as someone else here about Fox, but the fact I see no indication of any kind of new commentary track(s) is really pissing me off. I was depressed yesterday, especially considering this release is little more than three months away and there's probably little that can be done to get Fox to do more. And did I read it wrong, or are these things going to be sold in that damn head again?!? I don't want that! I want original poster images!

I think I'll try to get a bunch of relatives together to get this thing for me as a Christmas present so I don't have to pay for it!

Well, thank the Lawgiver we don't have to buy these things in that damn ugly head! (And by the way, don't count on the preview version of CONQUEST or any of the new extras being in the "Heads" Fox is still trying to sell.)

Looks like the hardcover book has already been written. I really don't plan on seeing or reading anything new in it, but maybe I'll be surprised.

Also looks like the folks at Apemania got their pictures took for the images on the box and discs. CAN'T SAY I'M TOO CRAZY ABOUT THAT! Is there something wrong with actual photos from the films?

You know, I don't think the dummies at Fox could ever -- even if given two thousand years to do it -- make something to my complete satisfaction in regards to how APES should be presented, and I'm at the point of not caring anymore. If it were up to me, PLANET would get a Blu-ray release all its own, then, I think at BENEATH's 40th anniversary, you'd get a box set of the sequels.

Well, it's the 21st Century, Hunter, and it's about time you threw out that old black and white Dupont you're still watching!

Seriously though, LCD 16x9 displays that will show you 1080p are getting mighty cheap. Even ones sold at Wal-mart look pretty good. The next generation of Blu-ray players should be out just before Christmas, and I expect prices in the $250 to $350 price range, cheaper if on sale. With the economy as bad as it is now, they better make this stuff cheap.

As far as people who simply can't afford or refuse to upgrade, I figure there's someone here that can copy the Blu-ray stuff to standard DVD. Fox loves when you do that kind of stuff!

No offense, but... WHAT GENIUS WROTE THIS?!?

What about the missing pieces from Planet? We should insist on the first and greatest APES
film being restored. I'm boycotting Fox until they restore those cut scenes to Planet.
No offense, but.... WHO'S THE DUMMY WRITING THIS?!?

PLANET only needs to be restored in terms of the best possible picture and sound. There are NO cut scenes that need to be restored. What you see now is Franklin J. Schaffner's final edit. Yes, there was stuff shot that didn't make the cut that was given for Jerry Goldsmith to score, and it would be nice -- if it's still in the vaults -- to see it, but NOT re-edited into Schaffner's version. NO WAY, NO HOW! Try to understand that not only would that be artistically wrong, but the Director's Guild wouldn't allow Fox to do it!

But what really sickens me is we get glimpses of what is there, showing up in documentaries. Trailers and behind the scenes material. I will be furious if the prologue from ESCAPE shows up not at bonus material but part of a documentary, edited.
              - Scott B.

Listen, I've got an idea... if this Blu-ray release isn't precisely what we want it to be, let's get a bunch of us together, get on a bus, preferably a school bus, drive to LA to the Fox corporation, and blow the whole damn place sky high and finally put an end to this madness? How about that, Mr. Bosco? Of course, you must realize we blow ourselves up along with all of Fox, otherwise this would merely be a selfish gesture. We must be ready to be martyrs.

              Yep, but they won't.

Price of new TV + price of BR player + price of Apes set = more money

Price of new TV + price of BR player + price of Apes set = more money
than I can or want to spend at this time. Especially since I do not
plan to rebuy all of my existing movies on Blu-Ray, which means I'd be
buying all of that primarily just for the Apes films that (sadly) no
one else in my family cares about.

              Hunter
OK, Hunter, don't buy them then, wait until the future. You know from APES the future is always worth waiting for, and from the news of the world of late, it looks like the near-future of this planet is sure going to be a rosy one.

Meanwhile, the rest of your family should have nets thrown over them and be dragged through the nearest cornfield -- just for cheap laughs.

So how about a second version on the NEXT set with tiny scenes re-inserted like Nova's pregnancy?  In the old days all the European laser disc versions had the extra scenes re-inserted WAY before the American versions (if ever) like Alien, RoboCop, & Terminator 2.

NO WAY, NO HOW!  Try to understand that not only would that be artistically wrong, but the Director's Guild wouldn't allow Fox to do it!

For those of you that have recently watched the APES films in HD on MonstersHD:

Satellite Now Blu-ray Quality? Definitely not!

Posted July 31, 2008 12:41 PM by Josh Dreuth

Dish Network announced this morning that they would soon be offering a total of 114 national HD channels, and to celebrate the announcement they would, starting tomorrow, offer the Will Smith film 'I am Legend' in 1080p as a pay-per-view offering. They went further to suggest that because it was 1080p, the presentation would be "same as Blu-ray Disc quality". Of course, anyone with a Blu-ray player knows this definitely can't be true.

While both satellite broadcasts and Blu-ray movies can=2 0display 1080p video, the similarities end there. In order to conserve broadcast space, companies like DishNetwork and DirecTV will limit video bitrate to less than half of what a typical Blu-ray title requires for perfect video reproduction. This often results in pixelation during scenes with a lot of movement, which is definitely not a characteristic of Blu-ray.

Video aside, audio is something that can't even compare. Even the best satellite broadcasts only use 5.1 Dolby Digital for audio soundtracks. These tracks are easily trumped by PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio often found on Blu-ray discs.
The fact remains, neither satellite, cable, fiber-optic, nor any other broadcast medium can compare to the high definition experience of Blu-ray. The bogus statement made by DishNetwork only adds to consumer confusion about high definition offerings and is a desperate attempt to ride on Blu-ray's coattails. Much the same as claims of "high definition" digital downloads must be heavily scrutinized, so should claims by television broadcasters attempting to pull off the same trick.

DishNetwork did not respond to requests for clarification on their statement.

The difference is that those special versions were put together by the film's original directors. They were in essense Director's cuts of those films. In the case of POTA Franklin Schaffner is dead. No one should tamper with his work.

What would be wrong with seeing a different version? Will the director turn over in his grave? Movies like STRIPES have the deleted scenes restored all the time. Is the fact that the director passed on a reason not to restore the film? The original silent LOST WORLD was restored when additional footage was found many many years later.

Stripes is another film where the director participated in restoring deleted scenes. In the case of the Lost World the film was restored to its original release cut. The cut we now have of Planet is the release cut. And adding in scenes that were cut by the Director for its original release is not restoring the film it is tampering with it. Its their work not ours to do with what we will. That's just disrespectful to the original filmmakers.
