Did you know that one of the actors trying out for the part of Fonzie
was Micky Dolenz of the Monkies?
And were full circle back to Apes.
He also started as Circus Boy.
A nod to Armando.

The repros have to have bar codes on the packaging don't they (as opposed
to the old ones)? I didn't notice if the ST TOS ones did or not.

But my complaint here is, what is one going to do with their current
DVD-R or DVD+R's? This new format won't play "regular" DVD's that a lot
of us own, and I understand that there are already DVD Blu-Ray recorders that
will pay either the "plus" or the "minus" formats...so what happens to what we
have now? I certainly can't, and won't, change everything I have from
the "standard" version of DVD discs to the "Blu-Ray" ones...a person would
have to be Donald Trump to be able to afford that!
Zach
I think DVD-Rs and +Rs should play on Blu-ray players, as should all your
other standard DVDs.
The Home Video Industry very much wants people to now conveert over to
Blu-ray, because they are harder to copy, but standard DVD is a very popular
product and most people are pretty happy with it. My bet is that it'll be
around for some time. I think the relationship between standard DVDs and
HD Blu-ray is going to be very much like the one between VHS and
laserdisc. That relationship last a little over fifteen years, with
laserdiscs always a niche market, however laserdiscs always cost on average over
$35, while Blu-ray software may eventually sell for $15 - $20. So, Blu-ray
is going to be bigger than laserdiscs, but will exist alongside standard DVDs
for I would bet around the next ten years.

I generally stick with Panasonic. I have two Panasonic
DVD recorders and two players. They're all a few years old now
and I've never had any problems with them. I'd like to get a Panasonic
plasma, but I fear that by the time I get around to it plasmas will be
dead.

Zach,
Dave is correct. If you would like a better comparison on a few
players go to www.crutchfield. com and check off
"compare" you self all the players you checked with shared features side by
side. Panasonic has gotten better reviews and more importantly less
complaints from consumers. Try to find a site that has consumer comments
over reviews - reviews can be bought. I know as a writer/reviewer in the
past I've run into very shady dealings over what and had to write it for
magazines who did did want to lose a company as an advertiser.
The Panasonic players seem to upgrade more, have had less problems in
playing newer discs with more features.
Decide how you are going to connect your player to you TV and if you have
a Home theater receiver. The best way is of course HDMI it will carry
both sound and picture to your TV. If you want to take advantage of the
"lossless" audio Blu has to offer make sure your receiver can do it via
HDMI. You can connect it with analogue cables but only the most
expensive players give you that option for 6.1/for 7.1 If having both
Dolby and DTS lossless audio is important than again only certain players do
both - Sonys is great for putting only their upper priced players.
It is the lossess audio which offers uncompressed sound which people
don't usually look into in terms of how to get it, or which players offer in
both Dolby and DTS. Don't believe that you need to have HDMI 1.3, the
signal will carry over shorter distance on a lower version of 1.3 - however,
your if your receiver isn't newer if may not decode right. In that case
just make sure the player has a built in decoder.
To get the most out of the Blu format you really have to go slow and do
your research. Don't depend on your local store to fill you in.
You have to be wise and do this yourself. It's your money, and salesman
don't work for you. There's a lot to look into so take your
time.

play your standard def DVDs. (and many will 'upscale' the image quality
making them look better than ever) Many Blu-ray players will play
DVD-r. DVD+r is a little more hit and miss but in my experience
that's been the same with standard def DVD players. Dave

It's based on the original package art but there are signifigant differences. The 6 characters on the original card were Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty(or as Mego called him "Scottie"), Uhura and Klingon.
On The new package, Uhura, Scotty are replaced by the later isseued (on completely different cards) Romulan and Andorian. Uhura and Scotty will be among the second wave of releases. The "Mego" is taken off the card art, of course. And a large Warning (I think about small parts) is on the front in a black box. This also sets it apart from the original. The back of the package is entirely different from the original back.
The ones for POTA will likely follow the same formula.

I don't know about elsewhere, but I suspect it was rare when it was
released. I never even knew this one existed until the late '90s. It
certainly was never available anywhere in my area when I was growing

it was cool to see those orange sky painted scenes based on BATTLE. Come
to think of it, is the artwork for all of the original Addar models up
anywhere? I'm drawing a blank right now- can't even remember how many
there were. Cornelius, Zira, Zaius, Ursus, Urko, Caesar, Stallion &
Solider. Am I missing any?
Apparently, the seller has all sever models listed. Some built up, some
not:

from everything. So if you play video games, watch a news

This new format won't play "regular" DVD's that a lot of us own, and I understand that there are already DVD Blu-Ray recorders that will pay either the "plus" or the "minus" formats...so what happens to what we have now? I certainly can't, and won't, change everything I have from the "standard" version of DVD discs to the "Blu-Ray" ones...a person would have to be Donald Trump to be able to afford that! Zach I think DVD-Rs and +Rs should play on Blu-ray players, as should all your other standard DVDs.
The Home Video Industry very much wants people to now conveert over to Blu-ray, because they are harder to copy, but standard DVD is a very popular product and most people are pretty happy with it. My bet is that it'll be around for some time. I think the relationship between standard DVDs and HD Blu-ray is going to be very much like the one between VHS and laserdisc. That relationship last a little over fifteen years, with laserdiscs always a niche market, however laserdiscs always cost on average over $35, while Blu-ray software may eventually sell for $15 - $20. So, Blu-ray is going to be bigger than laserdiscs, but will exist alongside standard DVDs for I would bet around the next ten years. -- Rory

It's based on the original package art but there are signifigant
differences. The 6 characters on the original card were Kirk, Spock,
McCoy, Scotty(or as Mego called him "Scottie"), Uhura and Klingon.
On The new package, Uhura, Scotty are replaced by the later isseued (on
completely different cards) Romulan and Andorian. Uhura and Scotty
will be among the second wave of releases. The "Mego" is taken off the
card art, of course. And a large Warning (I think about small parts) is
on the front in a black box. This also sets it apart from the original.
The back of the package is entirely different from the original back.
The ones for POTA will likely follow the same formula.

I always loved the box artwork for this one. Ditto for Caesar and Aldo-
it was cool to see those orange sky painted scenes based on BATTLE. Come
to think of it, is the artwork for all of the original Addar models up
anywhere? I'm drawing a blank right now- can't even remember how many
there were. Cornelius, Zira, Zaius, Ursus, Urko, Caesar, Stallion &
Solider. Am I missing any?
Apparently, the seller has all sever models listed. Some built up, some
not:

I don't know about elsewhere, but I suspect it was rare when it was
released. I never even knew this one existed until the late '90s. It
certainly was never available anywhere in my area when I was growing
up (though the others were).

Rory,
I checked the original VHS version, and there were in fact sounds of the
doors being opened and closed during that scene. So that's been removed as well.
Someone either at Fox or at Chance Stereo Surround (or both) obviously hate
ambient background noise. To go through and tinker with so many different
things...
If anyone watches BENEATH, please keep an eye out for other such oddities
such as no sound effects where there should be.
BTW, does ANYONE else remember the tunnel scene with Brent and Nova as I
described it where you still hear the air whooshing through when they touch the
ladder?

there was no sound of the cage doors being slammed. Can anyone with an older

wagon doors being slammed was there originally? <<<.html

I can't say I recall it, but it makes sense that it should be that
way. With the lack of other sound effects, such as the wagon doors, not
being there, you have to wonder if the sound on BENEATH isn't one big mess that
Fox can't seem to fix. I'll bet the Blu-ray audio will have problems too,
but hopefully not.
All of the sequels were originally mono, so way back when Chace first
started this "stereoizing" thing, that's when things got screwed up. Now,
they've (and I don't know if Chace is still involved) supposedly done all
new 5.1 mixes for the Blu-rays. Hard to imagine professionals working on
those couldn't do the best job possible, but I haven't much faith in them.
I'm hoping this time the music tracks will finally be true stereo? If
they're doing isolated scores, I would think they would be.
Terrible situation, isn't it?

Indeed it is. My only hope in this case (since I haven't heard from the
audio department) is that they're going back to the original tapes to produce
the new mix. In theory, all the original sound EFX **should** be there
then.
Interestingly enough, and internet search for 'Chance Stereo Surround'
turns up absolutely nothing. So maybe there's hope.

one at the Ziegfeld, I think. There were about 30 people in the
audience. One person arrived in a gorilla costume, but they took it
off before taking their seat. It was just an ordinary gorilla
costume, not one from the film.

Also there is a series of shots like the one of Heston sitting at the desk in the court room as well, only they are 2x2 "square" shots instead of the usual rectangular side format. I only have a few of those. It's interesting to learn the history of these things. Scott B.

But we felt in order to respect the continunity of the films it had to be done. If Cornelius had brought the journal along in the ship, the authorities would have found it. Since this is not an element of Escape's plot, the journal had to be left behind. So having Cornelius bury it so it could be found by some future archeologist was consistant with his character.

Sources confirm that Team Darlton is looking to introduce two new characters this season - and they're both as mysterious as they are lethal. They're
also coming in as recurring players with an option to become series regulars in season 6. First up is Caesar, a dangerous, physical and extremely intelligent male between the ages of 35 and 45. Although his intentions are unclear, this much is certain: He's as skillful at charming people as he is at killing them. He also has a dark past, but, c'mon, that much was a given. The other newbie is Ilanna, a European female in her late 20s to early 30s who possesses great intelligence, but who's also dangerous as all get out. She's alluring and apparently used to getting her own way. What does it all mean?! Don't ask me, ask Jeff Jensen! Better yet, I will: "Caesar, eh? My mind immediately links to Planet of the Apes. Caesar was the primate that led his fellow apes in a revolt against their human slavers. So... remember when Ben made that cryptic reference last season to an Other that preceded him in leadership? The "Hostile" who
ordered the gassing of the Dharma Initiative, a.k.a. "The Purge"? Assuming that dude ain't Jacob, could he be this "Caesar"? As for Ilanna, she sounds exactly like the kind of lethal lady Sayid would fall for. So I'm wondering if the dashing Iraqi is due for a new love interest, yet another lady whose true motivations will be in question." Um... my thoughts exactly! Thanks, Jeff! Now with regards to extra footage and instering it

made with this in mind for with alernate endings and larger scenes. I would like
to see certain things in the original POTA such as Nova's pregnancy but I think
this should be an extra if the footage exists as it would alter the course of

However are people aware that the lost part of

.htmlBUSH UNVEILS NEW PLAN IN IRAQ: PRIMATE WARFARE
With the war in Iraq closing in on 7 years and thousands of casualties, the Pentagon is looking for new, inventive ideas to employ on the urban-desert battlefield. Operation Monkey Business may be exactly what the war in Iraq needs. "New wars require new tactics," Said pentagon spokesmen James Farnuk, "and this tactic is pure gold."
The tactic Farnuk is referring to is the new plan unveiled today to train and arm 5500 monkeys, apes, and chimps for peacekeeping operations in the Iraq theater.
"This may sound slightly crazy," Farnuk said at a Pentagon press release, "But these primates are exactly what the war needs. They cannot speak English, so we don't have to hear them whining about how they'd like to have ceramic plates in their body armor. They're used to living in a zoo or a jungle so housing them will be easy. And they've got opposable thumbs on their hands and their feet. Think about it: the average foot soldier only has two limbs that can fire weapons. These buggers have four. Guns on their hands. Guns on their feet. These guys are bristling death!"
"Hannibal used elephants to great success, but this may be a tactic of a new order. Giving monkeys guns and grenades is radically different from using pachyderms to cross mountains." Said Col. Devin LaBrie of Army Special Ops command. "These primates are not bound by the Geneva Convention which only applies to humans. Plus, they are ultra aggressive when we starve them for several days. Anyone that makes eye contact with these chimps is gonna get a bullet in the brain, or any other place these monkeys can hit!"
The new plan was devised by the commander-in-chief after a late night viewing of Planet of the Apes.
"I never realized how ruthless apes can be until I saw Charlton Heston being man-handled by those dirty apes. It was terrifying to watch how vicious they could be!" Bush said in a press conference on Monday. "I knew any ape that could handle a man like Heston would be a great soldier in Iraq. I got on the horn immediately to try and find out what happened to the apes in that movie. Were they executed for their crimes against humanity? No one seems to know where they went. But I'm sure if we round up enough apes we'll get some of their descendants in the mix. They come from good stock. Tough fighters. Kinda creep though, apes talking like men and wearing man-clothes, but that may be what we need. Bloodthirsty, smart apes that can speak perfect English. This is going to be the turning point of the war!" Bush said with unbridled enthusiasm.
The plan, however, is being criticized by animal rights groups that feel this would be placing primates in a difficult situation. "My God, these are peaceful creatures not tools of war!" Said Emily Smith of PETA. "They know nothing of war or killing or even how to load a gun and the US military wants to use them as pawns to attack other humans. This is atrocious. How will the apes be compensated-in bananas? What about access to health care on the battlefield? The hot sand will burn their tender foot pads. Who knows how to treat an ape on the battlefield? This plan is not sound."
The president, however, seems unperturbed by the critics.
"This plan rules. Once those apes touch down in Iraq they will be killing machines. No mercy, just chimps enslaving the terrorists and parading them around in leg irons and neck chains. This will be my greatest success. Apes in Iraq is going to totally rock!"

Received a very quick response back someone at Chace. He couldn't give me
specifics- past the fact that they had worked on different Apes projects for Fox
over the years- because of client confidentiality. However he did give me
the direct e-mail of someone at Fox who is working on the audio aspects of the
Blu-ray set, and as far as I'm concerned this was even a step further
than the person I had previously been in touch with who said that he
would pass my concerns along to the audio department. At any rate, I heard back
from the new guy at Fox the day after I wrote to him, and he mentioned to
me that they had compared the stereo mixes to the original
dialogue/music/effects stems (and the elements which will be used in the
upcoming set) and they did find several differences in the effects track.
Regardless, he asked me to send my list of specific problems (which I did
right away), so now I know for a fact that the information is in the right
hands. Remains to be seen what ultimately happens, but at least the right people
are aware of the problems now.
One thing he mentioned had me curious though:
"The previous standard-definition collection (released in '06), which
included BENEATH used a 5.1 mix which was created from the original
materials, so that mix should have corrected the issue."
I'm not set up for 5.1, so if there's two different audio tracks on the
Legacy Edition then I haven't heard the 5.1. Could someone who has a Dolby sound
system set up give the DVD a listen and see if the problems are still there or
if they were corrected? Because on the Legacy version I've seen/heard, the
problems are still there.
I also took the opportunity to ask/make a few questions/suggestions,
including the NATO spot for BENEATH, which version of BATTLE will be
released, including both trailers and TV spots for all five films,
using the original movie posters as DVD covers instead of the spoiler
covers/characters on the cover that aren't even in the respective films their
face appears on, and some of the conceptual artwork like what was included in
the Malibu Comics BENEATH graphic novel. Being that my questions could have
easily turned into a Q&A at a Comic Con panel, I limited myself.
Again, I'll keep you all posted. Nice to at least be making some headway
though.

I have Dolby Digital 5.1 and the answer is "NO!"
The stuff that's still missing in BENEATH's analog tracks is also missing in 5.1 (in the '06 "Legacy" transfers).
Tell this person to specifically check the scenes you know about.
Also, from what I can tell, all the sequels are very much "expanded mono." The music in each sequel (all of which were originally mono films), that have stereo masters (many of which have been released on CD), are not in true stereo. The music is expanded mono.
Since these Blu-ray discs will sport isolated scores in 5.1 Dolby Digital, I'll assume they'll use whatever true stereo masters20they have.
A final word about PLANET.... This movie was originally prepared for a 4-track (center, right and left front channels, plus mono surround) magnetic stereo surround release, but because DR. DOLITTLE was bombing big time jut prior to PLANET's release, APJAC only distributed mono (optical) prints (including premiere theatres). The original stereo tracks were then lost. I've never, ever read that they were found, so I therefore believe what we have on DVD (in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS) is a "reconstruction" of the original stereo. The music in this latest version (the '04 35th Anniversary edition transfer) is true stereo and the sound effects no longer have that fake stereo taint -- far superior to the previous Chase efforts. (The Dolby Digital 5.1 actually has better separation (expansion) than the DTS.) However, I still think the Goldsmith score has been mixed at too low a level. I remember that the music used to dominated the soundtrack.
Now, sound effects are more clearly heard, but at the expense of the score. (Check out the scene right after the hunt and where we first see Ape City and the surgery. Goldsmith's score is almost buried.)
Ask this guy at Fox he can say anything about what is and isn't truly stereo, and congratulations for making contact!

All it really has on Production Weekly for POTA: Genesis is that it's
in development, producers are Richard Zanuk & Ralph Winter and the
Director is listed as Scott Frank. Only other info is that it's

I feel like Bones in "Star Trek II."
Anyway, if this is going to be a movie, I guess it'll be about how apes rose to subjugate (if that's the right word) mankind.
We know how the Boulle book told it, and how CONQUEST showed it, but I expect this will be some new scenario, hopefully one more scientifically plausible, but with Hollywood movies don't count on it.
Anyone got ideas on how they'll tell this story -- if that's what they're doing?

Yes, it is very interesting. Seems to me the situation with BENEATH's soundtrack is a mess!
I'd let the guy at Fox in charge of this know at once, Chris! Hopefully there's still time for them to fix it, however I'll bet you right now the same problems will persist.

Yeah, that's what I figured, but I'll bet you this gets made, probably for a 2010 release. It'll be on the level as those AVP films Fox has done, not quite "direct-to-dvd," but not exactly "A" picture level. A modern "B" movie, which is really what all the original sequels were too.
I just looked up this Scott Frank on IMDB. Info is as follows:
Brother-in-law of director Phil Joanou, who directed Frank's teleplay 'Dead End for Delia' instal
lment of Showtime's television noir anthology,"Fallen Angels" (1993). Frank also wrote the screenplay for Joanou's 1996 feature, Heaven's Prisoners (1996).

Interesting.....And this is an updated production calender....No cast?? maybe
it's animated??? No release date??
*** The part of having no release date is good and bad... Good in the sense that they're not gonna have to throw it together just to make their "planned release date" like they did with that Burton film... Bad in the sense that no planned release date often means the idea gets scrapped or delayed over & over... I just don't see it getting off the ground... ***
