.html.html Thanks Gelson.
Just an update on the site. Well, it's now late september and the site is about 50% done so it's going to take a few more weeks to finish. No later than the end of october. What needs to be posted is the video section which will only consist of rare videos we've all had for years (no dvd marketed material - only basic movie trailers). I spoke to Matthew last night about "Planet of the Men" and at his request I'll be posting the original verison of "Planet of the Men" so I'll have that posted later in the month as well. Also spoke to Hunter a few days ago and I'll be sending him my captured Super 8 material so he can ad it to his Rarities Disc 3.
And that's about it. Once the site is done, I'll post an e-mail address there for anyone that wnats to contribute to the site as far as fan material, have regular news updates on the front page and if Fox ever gets around to making another POTA movie, I'll be creating a separate Countdown Site for the movie (if it ever happens).

I remember back in the eighties, on Nightline, I think, a debate over nuclear arms between Paul Newman and Charlton Heston. It was easy to tell that the liberal Newman couldn't stand the conservation Heston, at least not his politics anyway. Newman had no patients with him. I'll never forget the look on Heston's face when Newman said something a little rude to him, and ol' Chuck just looked at him like "What's your problem?"

pota@yahoogroups.com Subject: [pota] BENEATH scenes I think I finally figured out why Don Pedro Colley's character was missing from the scene in BENEATH immediately following the failure of the Lawgiver illusion to stop the advancing ape army. In the Final Shooting Script dated April 10th 1969, there's a somewhat different sequence of events. Brent discovers the subway station, that cuts to the Minister giving his blessing to the Ape Army, then it cuts back to Brent and Nova in the subway and Brent's soliloquy. Later, after Brent says "The Apes are marching on your City", it goes to the scene where the young chimpanzees are protesting, then to the Mass. The fight in the jail
cell is immediately afterwards, and then after the missing scene of Mendez kneeling/praying before the bust of Mendez I, it cuts to the Gorilla Army in the desert/Lawgiver illusion. Afterwards, the gorilla army advances, finds the octagonal vent in the ground, and begin their descent. That cuts to "Mendez and surviving Inquisitors" with the dialog somewhat different from the finished film:
Caspay (to Fat Man): You know the range of their City
Fat Man nods
Caspay: Set it in the mechanism and wait for me.
Fat Man exits shot
Caspay (to Albina): I want a public thought projection at adult and infant level: 'Clear the Streets. Stay Indoors'.
Albina nods and exits shot.
Caspay (to Mendez): What will you do, Holiness?
Mendez: Everything Necessary.
Then it goes to the army initially entering the City, and the trio in the
jail cell with the gorilla solider looking through the hole in the wall etc.
So basically, "Stupid animals. They don't have the brains to hold our illusions" (Caspay). "We've no defense" (Albina). "Except our bomb. Call our people to High Sanctuary" (Mendez) was tracked in later, and what's interesting about this is the fact that- as had been mentioned recently- you don't see the Mutants actually speaking during this part of the scene. You do (apparently) see Caspay say "Adults to the Cathedral, infants indoors", but you're looking at him from the back so he could have said "Clear the Streets. Stay Indoors" while filming, and then rerecorded dialog was tracked in later to address the fact that the scene was taking place earlier in the film. Giving it a close listen, it does seem as if Caspay's dialog right after "...and wait for me." was dubbed in later.
At some point, this scene was filmed with the implication that DPC's character was already dead, otherwise he would have been included in the scene. Afterwards, the scenes of the gorilla army were placed closer together (Minister blessing/Chimpanzee protestors) and earlier in the film (bleeding Lawgiver) that what the script intended. Presumably, Ted Post and/or Mort Abrahams decided all this post production and had to edit things differently. This also accounts for the scene where Mendez's purple robes go missing when the gorilla army is trying to break down the Cathedral doors. Here, you see the doors from the inside of the Cathedral as the army is trying to break them open, then the aforementioned shot of Mendez who appears to be looking at the doors turning his head from right to left to look up at the bomb. Then a shot of the bomb in it's lowered position is cut in, then an exterior shot of the Cathedral as the doors
break open and you see Mendez kneeling (sans robe) in the distance. If I had to guess, I'd say that they filmed the doors from the inside as they were being hit by the iron beams, but simply forgot to get a reaction shot of Mendez. So, they simply cut in another shot of Mendez that worked partially because of where he was looking, and partially because of the rock/stone walls in the background of both scenes. All things considered, it was handled pretty craftily.
Interestingly, there's no scene of the gorilla army seeing the ruins of NYC in the script. So this was either a post production last minute decision where they just edited together shots of the army marching and then reaction shots from the different characters, or it was something they decided to include during filming. I just looked at the scene again, and it appears that they cobbled this scene together in the editing room.
A few seconds in, you see a shot looking upwards towards Ursus and Zaius riding on a trail where you'll see a and brightly colored orange rock near the edge of the trail. Now if you go back to the bleeding Lawgiver scene where Zaius says "The vision was false", you see Ursus- in the distance- on his horse stopped near that exact same rock. Either way, it really explains the poor matte shot of the above ground NYC ruins when you think about it. There really wasn't a lot of time to do one properly.

I don't know. Then again - who would want to use that name? Then again, most people don't use their own name. Then again, EGO.

.html Just the other day I ran into Eric Greene on the subway train, for the
record, he knows my face, I don't think he remembers my name, so by no
means are we close friends, but as always he was very friendly,
talkative, and very enthusiastic re POTA. I asked the question to this
group a few years before, but now all I can figure is that jealousy
must be the reason that there is so much animosity toward him in this
group. He organized many ape events over the last decade in Los
Angeles, I may not agree with everything in his book, but it is still a
fascinating read, and yes, he is a cool guy. I was embarrassed to bring
up this group with him, because he is slandered in it so much (we were
discussing the Beneath Nato film not being on the Blu set and I
apprehensivly suggested he downlaod it from this site)... I have no dog
in this fight, but can call a spade a shovel. <.html

Yeah, I would have thought Terry or Billy or even Brian
would take first crack at it. And as for Paul Newman
on of the few with enough screen presence and Hollywood
"weight" to have been Taylor, thought Gregory Peck could
have done it, his crazy guy didn't laugh a lot. Though short
in stature, a contemporary of Eddy G's, Jimmy Cagney had
the best crazy laugh of any of the pound for pound. Bogey
could have done it, since he specialized in misanthropes,
if he wasn't dead. And saw a great line from one of Kim's
old cohorts, Marlon Brando, or as I like to call him Drambo!
I believe the line was Scum Sucking Pig! and then he threw a
table.
Great line, and not too far off Damned Dirty Ape!

You be the judge Jessy.
Kim's hair was on her shoulders
but then she wore a pad that hunched them.
If you look in the front it's about even with her jawline.

Thanks Gelson.

This is the sort of wig you could use, though it would have to be
restyled.
However the cost of these wigs, even used is not cheap.

Actually, I'm awaiting to get a Blu player gratis for use in my

offered an HD-DVD over a year ago, but I turned it down due to the format
war. I was also offered a Blu previous and turned it down for the same
reason. Now that I've been offered another Blu, but from a different
company I carefully looking into the model and features so I can evaluate the

[pota] POTA BLU
Speaking with a person from a PR firm for FOX Video he has confirmed
the following...
Both versions of CONQUEST will be on the disc.
For the "Unrated" Edition it will contain 12 mins. of footage. It will
have a different ending. It is a diffrent version not just altered with
the added 12 mins. (Hope this IS true) The "Unrated" version of CONQUEST
will NOT be made available to standard DVD.
Both versions of
BATTLE - Theatrical and longer versions.
As of now, bonus materials
are still being gathered for this Blu-ray release. It has not yet been
decided which theatrical trailers are being used.
They are still
looking for more materials such as - deleted scenes from teh films. As
of now they HAVE NOT found the deleted scenes from PLANET or the Prolog
from ESCAPE.
According to his contact at FOX (who is working on this
Blu release) there is no BENEATH NATO featuette (I wonder who this FOX
person is?)
As far as he's been told NONE of the special bonus
materials eithre gathered, or made for this release will be made
available for standard DVD.
I again offerd my aid and said I was
will to discuss the use of material from my collection - I doubt it will
come to pass. I figured that if they don't find the footage from ESCAPE
I might allow use of the slides I have - I doubt it will come to
pass.
According to this contact I have been put on a list for a
review copy when it is available. For those of you who have visited my
site I will do a review as revealing and honest as I have the past POTA
releases. the reveiw copy isn't expected that much ahead of the time of
street date according to him so there's time.

Blu-ray 'Has Five Years
Left,' Says Samsung Exec
While we can't say if it represents a general
sentiment at Samsung or not, the company's UK director of consumer
electronics, Andy Griffiths, sure went out on a bit of a limb in a
recent interview with Pocket-lint, with him saying that Blu-ray
has, to paraphrase David Bowie, only "five years left," and that he
"certainly wouldn't give it ten." He did say, however, that he thought
2008 would be Blu-ray's year, adding that "it's going to be huge", and
that Samsung is "heavily back-ordered at the moment."
As for
Samsung's future after Blu-ray's supposed demise, Griffiths seems to
think that OLED
will be the next big thing, and he's pegging 2010 as a possible date for
it to become mainstream and replace LCD. He didn't offer a prediction as
to when it will die out
though.

opportunity for BLU, but not absolute. It could still fail. Numbers
for its saturation are at a point that make it definite. Common
sense would make the studios start to develop release that make them
more attractive with features not available on standard DVD release.
But if the number don't increase that's still money invested in
production that might not stand up to the investment - in which case
they will have to make it available to a format which can support the
cost.

My Zira wig was $29.95 at the beauty supply in the
mall. It was the "perfect" style and length. The only "bad" things
were...It was synthetic, but I didn't need to style it, It had bangs, so I cut
them short, it was black #1 and the hairpieces were brown #2.

Jeff, I will look around in the malls here for the style that you
found before I order from the internet. It's hard to gauge correctly
if it's not right in front of you. I really like the wig you found
and hopefully I can find one here. If not, I will have to enlist
your help sometime down the road.
I ordered a "raw Zira appliance" and that's what Brian sent me. It
came painted already, but not finished. It did not come with teeth
but Brian sent me a pair to use, so I have to figure out how to glue
them in. I told Brian that I planned to create a Zira pullover mask,
so perhaps that's why he sent me that one. I didn't know there are
several types. I am just very happy with what I got because I didn't
think it would fit so nicely.

Brown #2 is/was popular for filming back
then. Black films too dark and creates "empty spots." 1 reason why
the gorillas are brown and their vests are gun metal color (at least that's what

It's funny. I can feel your excitement when
you talk about making the costume and fitting the prosthetics. Every time
I make a new costume or ape appliance, I feel like I did when I bought my
first ape mask. The problem being, each time I make a new(better) costume,
I wear it and feel satisfied and don't care if I never put it on again.
When I was 11 I bought styrofoam (I didn't know the difference back then between
foam latex and styrofoam) and carved a gorilla face and put it on my face.
I wore it for hours, even though it created such a bad reaction on my
face...red, raw, etc. At 12 I bought a cheap chimp mask and wore it for
Halloween. After Halloween I cut it up and made an ape "appliance" I
wore that for days on end. I was satisfied. Then Don Post came out
with the ultimate...POTA masks. I took ALL my money and bought a
Cornelius, Zaius, and Gorilla. I would wear those for 8 hours a day, run
up and down the street, and wave to people. I was satisfied until I
found a couple who got used appliances from the T.V. show. I hired them
(for $300.00) to do my make up. Things fell through, but I had been an ape
with my masks. Skip ahead 10 years. Within that time I had told
myself I wouldn't do an ape costume or make up untill I could get a real costume
and create realistic wrinkles for my gorilla. I sculpted really nice POTA
faces and decided they were good enough and went about making my goriila
costume. By this time I wasn't as much a "purist" as I was when I was
younger. I decided to make my costume with bright purple pants and tunic
and a dark black vest. (see Apemania's Junior G-Men page). I dressed up
twice that way and suddenly, I WAS SATISFIED. I didn't want/need to do it
again. I was sad that I felt that way. Then this year
being the 40th anniversary, I decided to dress up (for the first time) to go to
Comic Con. I was so excited (see the pics I posted). After that
weekend the feeling was back. I don't need to do it again.
A couple of days ago I went on that POTA bulletin board/chatroom. Now I
want to make an Ursus costume. In the mean time I'm excited listening to
everyone else whose making their first or better costume. Thank you
all!

I think that's fine. I think Zira's hair is darker in the back
anyway.
And though they say there is no such thing as black hair in nature,
only very very very dark brown, I'd swear some Asian hair is so
dark it's almost blue! And they don't call that horse very very
very dark brown Beauty, do they! I've mixed natural and
synthetics.
Even in the films they layer and edge of hair around the face, and
I'm pretty sure that was not real hair, though I could be wrong.

I started with Silly Putty. You can imagine how badly that
worked.
I tried everything. Nose putty. Latex over florist's
clay. I did have
the Cornelius mask as well. Then I found out how to do foam.
It's
shrank during the baking, but at least I'd made something.
Then
after a couple decades I got the bug again and did it right. But
my
sculpts were as good as Brian's. This was before he had started
Apemania. i found his rejects for sale on eBay and thought I'd
cornered the market! Unfortunately when I recast them and
tried to sell them on eBay I found out he was starting Apemania
when he sent me a cease and desist letter. : ( But I did
have
some decent ones. No doubt I'll get the bug again sometime.
But, like you, I'll probably buy them from Brian. He gets such
nice thin edges. And my oven won't be stinking of ammonia.

My four year old Ashton is also a Planet of the Apes fan. He created his Ape-pliance and surprised me one day,

The
artwork is well layed out but those are Apemania people NOT the original
actors. If I want to see "fan-art" I'll go to a fan site. It shouldn't
be on the covers of films they are NOT in. Tacky. Poor taste. FOX F5@KS UP again. Scott B.
Yeah, I'd really love to tell the person responsible for this stuff a
thing or two, however, I'm simply going to make my own cover art and that'll
be that! Thank the Lawgiver for computers, photoshop and printers!
I'm very glad to see that the films will be released individually, as now
that gives me the option of just buying the first movie (you know, the one
that counts) on Blu-ray, then waiting a few months to get the entire set,
when it'll be heavily discounted I'm sure. I wasn't looking forward
to spending so much since I still have to get a Blu-ray player, and it
doesn't look as if the expected price drop is going to happen this year.
The new Panasonic players are still going to be well above $300. I'll
probably go with just getting a Panasonic BD30 on eBay.
The "Preview Version" of CONQUEST may only be available in the
40th Anniversary set, along with the other extras. If so, this situation
kind of sucks, but most things come to those that wait. I can
wait.

Thank you
all!

I always thought that it was black because they used Korean
hair. Maybe it looks a little dark brown in the sun, as most black hair
does when the light gets filtered through it.

It looks too short and too dark. I think

Dear Jessica,
I glued my teeth in with latex. It sticks to the

Jeff, I will look
around in the malls here for the style that you found before I order from
the internet. It's hard to gauge correctly if it's not right in front of
you. I really like the wig you found and hopefully I can find one here. If
not, I will have to enlist your help sometime down the road. I
ordered a "raw Zira appliance" and that's what Brian sent me. It came
painted already, but not finished. It did not come with teeth but Brian sent
me a pair to use, so I have to figure out how to glue them in. I told Brian
that I planned to create a Zira pullover mask, so perhaps that's why he sent
me that one. I didn't know there are several types. I am just very happy
with what I got because I didn't think it would fit so nicely.

Now here's something out of left field.
They've already started filming a sequel to the 2001 movie "Cats and Dogs",
about the title creatures planning to take over the world. Charlton Heston did a
voice on that, one of his last roles in film. It also shows that films that did
marginally 7 years ago (and had marginal Heston roles) can STILL get sequels. So
maybe there is some truth to this "POTA : Genesis" thing.
They're also writing a prequel to the hit "I

that, too.

I did a lot of experimenting with the teeth.
I used teeth from a denture repair kit like
you see in the catalogues for old folks.
The I'd lay out a bead of hot glue in a
curve matching the appliance on a
surface it wouldn't stick to and set
the teeth before it cooled. Then
just peel it off and glue the set
into the appliance in one piece.
I'm sure there are other ways
but that's what worked for me.

There is also a gap that has to be filled beneath
the ears. I bought some ears from Apemania and had to glue hair all the way
around the back and lobe of the ear to hang

| Subject: Re: Blu-ray (Was: Hey guys... TWO things...) |
.html2- The flickering at the beginning of the cage scene. There are several shots in the current anamorphic transfer of PLANET that have that "flickering." It's been there for years, going all the way back to VHS. I have no idea why the image does it. Hopefully it will be fixed with the Blu-ray transfer.
BTW, I have my Blu-ray player. I only have two Blu-ray discs so far, though, Fox's THE SAND PEBBLES and MGM's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
The difference between standard DVD and Blu-ray, while not as spectacular as the upgrade from VHS to DVD, is still very apparent. There's much greater depth and detail to Blu-ray. At a certain distance from the plasma I was watching last night, it almost looked as if I was watching projected film. THE SAND PEBBLES was shot in 1966 in 35mm Panavision. I expect PLANET to look like this transfer. The clarity is much greater than the standard DVD and I noticed details I've never before spotted. One thing though, you can see the inherent film grain much better, which at first is kind of annoying, but you soon get past it. Remember, the image on 35mm film is only slightly larger than a postage stamp -- so you're going to see grain. They have the digital technology to reduce grain, but from what I've read this makes old movies look too20much like CGI video games. The Blu-ray of PATTON is supposed to have this problem.
2001, which was shot on 65mm film, really looks fantastic on Blu-ray. Just great. I'm really glad I've upgraded, although I'm not about to go out now purchase again all my favorite movies that are currently on Blu-ray. It just doesn't make sense to me. Overall, I don't find the weaknesses of standard DVD that distracting, not even on a 50" plasma screen TV.
For my core favorite movies, the top ten or twenty, I'll get the Blu-rays, but for the vast majority, standard DVD is going to work for a long time.
One thing I don't like is the packaging for Blu-ray. It's cold and too plastic. I much prefer what's been done with some DVDs of late, the cardboard slip covers and such.
So anyway, I got a Panasonic BD30K Bu-ray player. I got it for only $250. I highly recommend it. Very simple to use, though it does take time to read the instructions and get into the menus.
