the piece seen on toms site is actually mine ,i hadit done with a zira head and pose for display.i dont know if it was a prototype female gorilla costume or not.ive been told they thought of the ideal ,that's why the color to match the gorilla outfits.i have seen only one b/w costume test shot of it and a female chimp was wearing it in photo.the buckles also match the ones worn the gorilla boots in planet ,is another reason piece was supposed to be female gorilla.except for the color and buckles on chest ,it is exactly the same as the green female chimp costumes.i know this doesn't answer the question but has been told to me by several sources.i have shown it to brian also as he doubts it is a female gorilla he is not 100% sure.  goapebilly

Incorrect.
That is Zira in the Female Gorilla Costume.

The costume in question was supposed to be the female gorilla costume.
You may recall the actress being made-up as a female gorilla in the photo.
I don't know anyone who knows whether or not they used a female gorilla.
In the funeral scene - all the females I could see running (and I ran it frame
by frame) were Chimpettes.  They may have put the Widow in it and kept
her Chimpy to more easily identify her as female.  That would make the
scene more interesting from a sociological point of view as it would have
to account for a mixed marriage.  More likely they would have explained
it away by saying that purple was also a funereal color in Ape Society
as the other female Chimps were wearing purple scarves in the scene.
Therefor, if not a Female Gorilla Costume, then it's a Chimp Widow.

The b/w costume you speak of Billy, I have seen it too and the handwritten card on bottom corner states that it is a chimp.
Also has chimp hieroglyph, not gorilla hieroglyph.

thanks for info,i have heard different stories from numerous sources .until i ever hear exact story from costumer or someone who worked on film i really dont know.when i purchased top many years ago seller had thought it was widows costume from funeral.but if you look at frames ,it looks like a chimp face?go figure its a gorilla funeral?the person i purchased costume from ,got it from one of the couple people who bought out lots of costumes from fox and western costume.
ive compared it to the green chimp pieces, and everything is exactly the same, material, stitching, clasps etc, difference being color and metal buckles, which match the gorilla costumes.   goapebilly

Goldsmith score, J Lee Thompson directed.. I don't know if Jacobs

They just announced "The Chairman" for DVD on Nov. 7th. I believe that's the last Jacobs movie left to come out on DVD.
I saw it a millennium ago on cable. I remember it being kind of boring.

When you're right, you're right. "The Chairman" came out on DVD on Nov. 7th LAST year. I got it confused with "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (Peter O'Toole), which has been announced for January. That's the last Jacobs movie to debut on DVD.
"Dr. Dolittle", "What A Way To Go", "Play It Again, Sam", "The Chairman", "Tom and "Huck" the musicals and the "Apes" are out. I guess that covers it.

Jessica is right about that but the Lawgive is meant to represent all apes.  However Drhasslein is completely correct about Orangutan take over.
Another thing - the grieving widow in PLANET doesn't have to be a gorilla just because she wearing a mourning robe the same color as the Gorilla wear.  Remember it also the same color as the Orangutan Minister's frock.

Truthfully I'm more interested in that picture I've seen (and it's also one of the 1967 PLANET trading cards) of the Orangutan with a variant costume having leather coming down the front on only one side without hieroglyphs.  Truthfully, costume and or make-up tests aside that looks more like a female Orangutan to me.

I've seen it, have the DVD and the CD of Goldsmith's score.

Not a great movie, but not bad. Here's the comment I left for it on IMDB back in 2002:

8 out of 9 people found the following comment useful :-
Somewhat interesting spy thriller, 28 March 2002
Author: haristas from USA
This movie is a relic of its day, reflecting the cold war paranoia that was already rather quaint by 1969. This sort of undercuts the film as anything to be taken seriously, but fortunately it's=2 0reasonably well-acted and directed so it still holds up as mildly entertaining -- if there's nothing better on TV to watch. Of historic note is that this film was produced by the same guys who made the much more memorable "Planet of the Apes" a year earlier (both films were scored by the great Jerry Goldsmith), and one of the sets is left over from "Fantastic Voyage."

I read your amazon review of Robinson Crusoe on Mars and I'm glad you
pointed out everything didn't carry over from the laserdisc. Good to
know. I sold mine on ebay when it was still going for $250 (although
mine was autographed by the two leads & the writer) now that it goes
for significantly less I'm going to buy it again. Thanks for the info.

You know, it's kind of funny that no female gorillas or orangutans were ever shown in several of the movies, as well as the TV series.  Urko mentioned that he had a wife (Elta) but I don't recall her ever being shown.
In the Marvel comics series of the seventies ("Terror On The POTA") Brutus' wife (wasn't her name Zena, or something like that) was briefly shown...but she was the only one.

And Dr. Zaius mentioned in POTA that "his granddaughter played with human dolls", to Taylor.  Mainly, any females shown were all chimps (Zira, Lisa, and Ari...)

Hold on just a second... I made a mistake in that review, but Amazon won't let you correct your mistakes.

I can't remember everything, but I discovered that the trailer for RCOM on the Criterion DVD does in fact have the alternate audio from the poster collector on it, carried over from the laserdisc -- they just don't tell you that anywhere on the disc, but it's there, just switch the audio on your DVD player remote. However, the DVD doesn't have as many pages of text and images that where in the supplementals of the laserdisc(s).

The image (now anamorphic) is much better on the DVD, of course, and I made my own cover (from the original 1-sheet, one of which I own along with an insert poster) because I think the Criterion cover stinks.

Did you get Paul Mantee and Victor Lundin to autograph the LD in person, or did you send it to them? If I'd done that, I wouldn' t have sold it.

BTW, for those that don't know, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars," which if it had to have that title should have more correctly been "A Robinson Crusoe on Mars," is a 1964 film from Paramount about a stranded astronaut and his monkey trying to survive on the bleak Martian landscape, which back in 1964 most didn't know just how bleak it is! It's not a great movie, but it has a minor cult following.

You know, it's kind of funny that no female gorillas or orangutans were ever shown

Yes, she's still around.  Much older, of course.  I saw her a few months ago on TCM when they where showing films featuring Asian actors.  She was in a couple short featurettes.

No it isn't. If you read the final shooting script on Hunter's site (https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_conquest_finalshooting.pdf) and turn to page 12 the Orangutan in the bookstore is identified as a he.

I'm not quite sure what you meant by "who the human extras were in POTA": Do you mean the wild tribe? I think most of them were just local townsfolk, and if my memory is right, I think most of them were Native Americans... Being that most of them didn't look all that old, I'd guess a lot of those people could still be alive...

I'm continuing my foray into my collection that has been packed away
for a long time. Here's an item for you "Apesters" that was not
commercially produced but rather specially made for me by a friend's
sister's boyfriend. He was a jewelers apprentice and I gave him
instructions for this item. I don't remember what he made it out of,
but it did cost me a bit for the time.
I hope the image comes through I've never posted before with
                  photobucket.

Yes, I got the autographs in person as well as IB Melchor (however his
name is spelled) at a Starcon in Pasadena shortly after the disc was
released...The three of them were there together... It looked really
cool. I only saw one other guy with the laserdisc getting it
autographed as well. Funny thing, I sold it to a guy that could've
cared less about the autographs, he just was working on completing his
                  collection of criterion laserdiscs.

Did you know she was the original "Suzy Wong"? She starred in the play on Broadway in the late fifties. Her co-star was William Shatner, and later they would co-star in an episode of "Star Trek." I also recently found out she was once married to Robert Culp after they met when she guess-starred in an episode of "I Spy."

When I make apes or other creatures with longer muzzles, I try to incorporate the person into it.  For my Comic-Con apes, Julius had my sons teeth and Zira had Lacey's teeth.  Maybe you should have Dan and Tom incorporate YOUR teeth in the appliance.

I noticed the last time I watched the McDowall home movie of him being made up that not only does he have a wig that covers his head, but then he has a little hair piece that covers the front of the wig on his forehead, then they glue individual hairs in front of that!

There's a whole lotta hair going on in the original POTA!

France Nuyen and Robert Culp were married for only about four or five years in the late 60s/early 70s. As I told you, she met him when she signed to do an episode of "I Spy." I found this out listening to Culp's commentary on the Season One DVDs for "I Spy." He sounds to me like he's got or had a huge ego and was very full of himself. Anyway, he tells the story that his first "date" with Nuyen was to show her the beach location in Southern Cal. where the episode of "I Spy" was going to be filmed. This was in October 1965. He asked her to meet him at the beach at 8 A.M. the next morning. What he didn't know, and wouldn't find out until years later, was that Nuyen was unaware that the next morning was the first day of Daylight Savings Time. She didn't know to put her clock back an hour the night before, so she got to the beach an hour early and had to wait for him all alone. He said that she didn't say a thing about it at the time but was secretly furious over it, and years later when she divorced him, she cited this incident as one of the reasons why.

I also believe I read someplace that France Nuyen and Marlon Brando had an affair in the late fifties or early sixties, and that when he dumped her, she tried to kill herself or had a nervous breakdown at least.

Also, do you folks known that France Nuyen once played Charlton Heston's mistress in a 1962 movie called DIAMOND HEAD? In it, she dies giving birth to his baby.

I also asked about the third set that was initially supposed to be made, Ursus/Astronaut and he said they're not doing it (not now at least) because Diamond Select only wants to do the 4 apes right now.

Well, one thing it does prove, is that there is no "6th Disc" in the boxset. All features will be on their own discs. Beneath features "Alpha Omega", Escape features "Escape Secrets" and so on. Also case in point, Battle "Theatrical Version" and "Extended Version." Therefore Conquest should be the same. "Theatrical Version" and "Unrated Version." Also hinting toward the fact that the Unrated Version will also be in HD. Sweet. :o)

I remember someone  suggesting that perhaps the boxset will only bring the Conquest "Unrated Version."

Well, that may not be the case. But on the other hand I'm getting both boxset and single discs, so it really makes no difference to me. But just in case anyone was wondering about it.

She has eye shadow on.  I don't remember a single male
orangutan with eye shadow.  I think the script may have
called for a male orang, but there was a deliberate attempt
to have at least one female character in there who wasn't
a chimp.  Too bad no name was used, but I'm sure that
was because in the script the orang in question was male.

The script is only a starting point.  It do not make it positive proof.  Changes occur on the set all the time and something like this can happen.  It doesn't change the story or any lines since a name was not given to the character.  It's only a visual change and as long as it was done in one day without the need for retakes it need not be documented.  Only the continuity girl/person's note may reflect the change.

                    .html
I recently found this information in a book about LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Michael Wilson was one of the screenwriters on that film, but didn't receive on-screen credit for over thirty years because he was blacklisted.

Anyway, he's the primary screenwriter on PLANET OF THE APES, yet most here, I'll bet, don't know much about him. I learned a lot from this book and I've copied out most of what the book has to say about him below. It doesn't have anything to say about APES, but if you're familiar with most of PLANET's dialogue, you can sure tell from what's told below about Wilson that the film is very much a reflection of the man.

It's kind of long, but I hope most of you will read it. You're not going to get this kind of information from any Fox DVD extra.

                    -- Rory

Michael Wilson (1914-1978) grew up in San Francisco, the son of a fairly prosperous businessman. Quite religious as a boy, he was inclined toward the priesthood and credits his deep faith in Catholic doctrine -- to-wit, that all people are created equal before God -- with his early feelings of indignity and outrage toward any form of racism. "I simply would not join in the racist slurs that many of my companions had about Neg roes or Filipinos or Japanese and the rest. . . . I can't say that I fought racism in any articulated way; I simply refused to join it." These attitudes alienated him from his often anti-Semitic father, a distance compounded by the sense that "I did not like the philistine life represented by [him], the Babbitry." Though he adds that "this was a world I wanted wanted to shun," Wilson was hardly a rebel, not for lack of courage so much as love of family combined with a deep sense of social tact.
Blessed with uncommon intelligence and more than average talent, he was by his own admission a "golden boy," a top student and a successful athlete -- a robust, handsome youth who was not only admired by but also popular with his classmates. Below the surface of a conventionally successful adolescent career, however, there smoldered an unarticulated discontent. As his faith in Catholicism began to wane in his senior year of high school, he was searching for a higher moral purpose in life, one that would replace religion.
In 1932, Wilson entered the University of California at Berkeley, without the blessing of his father, who never had a college education and did not see the point of one. He nevertheless recognized his son's scholarly aptitude and agreed to pay for school tuition and other expenses. In his first two years of college Wilson's reading of literature, which had never been slight, grew by leaps and bounds. "I used to spend hours [in the university library], by the day and by the night. And in no organized way, just kind of a feast of reading." In spite of his literary interests, which included editing a literary magazine, he decided to major in philosophy, a choice he interpreted retrospectively as a desire "to find out why we were on this earth and what man's role was in the universe, if the answers were not to be found in the Catholic faith." It is interesting, and not insignificant in light of the characterization of Lawrence he would help to forge, that Wilson continued to lead what he called a "double life," expressed this time by his joining a fraternity of which he became president in his senior year, at the same time that he began to show an interest in the larger political movements of his day. The mid-1930s saw a number of important labor strikes in California and the country at large, which, Wilson commented, "demonstrated to students like myself that . . . the working class, led by maritime workers, were ready to fight back against the bosses." The San Francisco longshoreman strike of 1936, for example, inspired Wilson to write a short story that was published in Esquire. But the call of political activism was still relatively faint.
In spite of the fact that he was an excellent student and was encouraged by his college professors to go into college teaching, Wilson had decided by his senior year that he wanted to become a writer. Following the example of one of his adolescent idols, Ernest Hemingway, he went to Europe and made his base in Paris in order to get a new perspective on his life and country and, he hoped, to find themes for his writing. He traveled widely, eventually making his way to Moscow, where he tried unsuccessfully to obtain a job as a newspaper correspondent. As was the case for so many of his generation who were disillusioned by capitalism and fearful of fascism's rise, the politics of the Soviet Union held a special fascination for him. On his return to Paris, he stopped briefly in Berlin, where he visited the Museum of Communism, which the fascists had defaced with anti-Communist and anti-Semitic slogans. He came across glass cases stuffed with insignia worn by former Party members, executed or left languishing in prison, and, when one of the guards were not looking, managed to open one and steal a memento. He clung to it like a fetish to ward off the growing threat of fascism. Back in Paris he read radical literature, chiefly Marxist. He tried enlisting in the Spanish brigade; he attended a few Communist rallies. Most of all, he wanted to write socially aware fiction without having it turn into political tracts.
C2 In regard to his growing sense of his own artistic "activism," it is significant that Wilson began to frequent the movies of Paris. To our expatriate it seemed that films had been taken seriously as works of art by the French critical and intellectual establishment long before they had been in the United States. Watching french cinema, the artistically ambitious Wilson may have had an inkling that writing for the movies could be not only a political act but a rewarding one as well. He was most impressed by Renoir's Grand Illusion (1937). Not coincidentally, the anti-war film would become one of Wilson's staples, first in his treatment of Friendly Persuasion (1956), a complex Civil War story about a farmer played by Gary Cooper who is torn between his Quaker religious conviction and secular loyalties of various kinds, but most spectacularly, of course, in Bridge On The River Kwai (1957).
When Wilson returned to the United States in 1938, his political radicalism, if anything, had deepened. He joined the Communist Party, with which he would remain affiliated until 1956. His commitments were once again ambivalent, however. It was not love of Communism or socialism that motivated him "so much as . . . a hated of Babbitry, chauvinism, racism, and economic exploitation in a capitalist society. I . . . felt that fascism had to be stopped." He played at first ed ucational role by taking a graduate post in Berkeley's Department of English. "I was teaching classes in Marxism, primarily to students, undergraduate or graduate, who, we felt, were close to the party, moving in that direction. And so I gave them some courses in basics."
Party work was time-consuming, however, and after attending rallies and meetings, Wilson did not have much energy left over for his fiction. Nor was college teaching an attractive option either. He tried some odd jobs -- working for a year in Alaska on the salmon run, for a brief time on a socialist or collective farm in Baja, California, where he got the idea of doing a series of short stories about minority workers -- and then decided to try his luck in Hollywood. He moved there in 1940.
Like many earlier writers with high aspirations, Wilson had a snobbish attitude toward the film mecca. He saw employment there purely as a way of making a living, so that he could then become financially independent in order to devote himself full-time to writing the great American novel. He changed his attitude soon enough. "Although I . . . after my arrival read Nathaniel West's book The Day of the Locusts, . . . I really didn't share his gloomy view of Hollywood or his hatred of it." He had no track record as a scriptwriter and somehow had to learn his craft. He solved this problem by going to the movies, even B movies, for he reasoned that he could learn by figuring out how to write better ones. He also volunteered to work for next to nothing on low-budget productions that were willing to take a chance on beginners. For his first movie he had to crank out the scenes one day before they were shot on the set, a nerve-racking experience from which he nevertheless acquired an iron discipline.
Wilson, meanwhile, got to meet some of Hollywood's political radicals like John Howard Lawson, author of a number of screenplays. Lawson had a profound influence on Wilson's developing understanding of himself as a writer for films, especially in connection with the problem of political expression in works of art intended for mass consumption:

He often spoke of the struggle for content in motion pictures, by which he meant that although it was extremely difficult to do a truly progressive and honest film in Hollywood, we, as radicals and Marxists, had an obligation to try our damnedest to do so; and that one could accomplish certain things, even in pictures which thematically seemed silly or vapid. And I don't mean by that the20 oversimplification which his enemies would say this is, the injection of Communist propaganda. That isn't what he meant at all. He meant the injection of honesty and humanism in the pictures which lacked it.

As an example of what Lawson meant, Wilson wrote for one of the Hopalong Cassidy pictures of 1942 a screenplay called "Border Patrol," in which he used stories he had heard years earlier in Texas about Mexican migrant workers who were exploited after crossing the border. Those episodes were some of the most popular in the entire series.
In the meantime, World War II intervened, and Wilson volunteered as a candidate in officer's school. Though he could stomach the rigors of training, the social attitudes of the soldiers sickened him. "What I was unprepared for was the racism and chauvinism and general ignorance both in my fellow candidates and in the instructors and officers. . . . there were certain officers or noncoms I wanted to kill, literally murder . . . because they were such dirty anti-semitic bastards." These experiences would deeply inform Wilson's biting satire of army mentality in both Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Stationed in the Pacific, he saw action as a marine lieutenant in the invasions of Kwajalein, Guam, and Saipan, experiences that proved invaluable when it came to writing about war in Burma.
After the war, he returned to Hollywood. Things went well for him at first. He wrote the script for Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1946) a year after his return. His screen adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy, which came to be called A Place in the Sun (1951), was a great success, starring Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor, and directed by George Stevens. Wilson was brought into the production specifically to preserve the spirit of Dreiser's social criticism. He received an Academy Award for his work on the film, a clear sign from the industry that he was now a top writer. But HUAC had already begun its investigations of Hollywood figures suspected of being Communist sympathizers, among whom were Wilson's closest friends and colleagues such as Dalton Trumbo and John Richard Lawson. They were part of the "Hollywood Ten" who were given prison sentences for refusing to testify to the committee and name names. By 1951 Wilson, too, had been called to testify before HUAC, a summons he courageously declined. His Academy Award for A Place in the Sun was deemed a "mistake." By now he was dropped by MGM and was considered anathema in the industry. When William Wyler, the director of Friendly Persuasion (1956), dropped Wilson's name f rom the film's credits, Wilson stubbornly fought back by seeking arbitration from the Guild of Writers in America. The guild ruled in his favor, but the studio decided to omit entirely the mention of a screenwriter rather than reinstate Wilson's name.
In protest of the McCarthy hearings, Wilson decided to go into independent production with another blacklisted artist, Paul Jerrico. The result of their collaboration, Salt of the Earth (1953), was to become a cult classic among the left. In his script Wilson told the story of a strike by badly exploited Mexican American laborers. He used some of the stories he had heard in Texas about the plight of migrant workers for his material. But he had learned from his friend Lawson, the point was not to propagandize for this or that creed but to show the struggles of people against inequalities and injustice in their human dimensions.
Because the film is such a clear indictment of international capital, not to mention a clear incitement of labor to resist it with the help of socialist or Communist organizations, it was blacklisted in the United States. Tremendous pressure was put on distributors not to carry it and on movie theatres not to show it. Wilson had achieved his goal of writing a film with a powerful political message having to do with the working class, ge nder, and race and ethnicity, and yet it would not be seen widely, if at all, in the United States. How, then, was he to script the political into films of mass circulation and appeal controlled by a conservative, even timid industry? It was clear that if he were to continue working in Hollywood, Wilson would have to throw in his lot with independent producers, some of whome operated within a complex international framework that transcended the borders of a chauvinistic America.
This was not altogether a bad proposition for Wilson artistically either. Independent producers were behind some of the best pictures released in the 1950s. Furthermore, a respected scriptwriter like Wilson could have considerably more input into an independently produced film than would be possible in a studio production. As he explained in an interview with the French journal Positif:

An evolution has occurred in the last fifty years in the situation for the American screenwriter with the decline of the major studios and the appearance of "independent" companies. . . . Those [screenwriters] who have been employed by the "independents" have profited from a somewhat elevated proposition. I don't say by that the screenwriters (at least being equa lly producers) had control over the production; but I am of the opinion that American screenwriters have more influence on the film than their European colleagues. It's very difficult for me to explain this to some Frenchmen. In France, with a few exceptions, the director engages one or several screenwriters to assist him in the preparation of his own ideas; in America the scripts are sometimes completely done before the director is chosen.

[Wilson went into "exile" for several years in the late 50s/early 60s in Paris, where he wrote his drafts of the scripts from Kwai and Lawrence, before returning to the California to contribute to several "Hollywood" films, most notably Planet of the Apes (1968). His last filmed screenplay was Che! (1969).]

That all depends on the angle that you look at it. From this angle it looks like the Orangutan has a beard.

True and I could be wrong but until I see some positive proof that there was an intent to change what was called for in the script, the evidence in the script is the only really evidence that exists. Everything else is sheer speculation.

The alignment in those shots is perfect. How did you know the exact
locations? I posted this before, but in 1990 I was delivering a package
there and stumbled across the bridge, unaware at the time until I saw
it that it was the location. The bridge is gone now, right?

The alignment in those shots is perfect. How did you know the exact
locations? I posted this before, but in 1990 I was delivering a package
there and stumbled across the bridge, unaware at the time until I saw
it that it was the location. The bridge is gone now, right?

the biggest change of course is that they have covered many of the stairs and cement slopes with grass! Most of the area is a large outdoor shopping mall but over by the bridge it's still pretty close.....where the office buildings are.

I didn't know she was married to Culp I met him at a convention once-he
was kind of crabby that day...maybe I would be, too if I had to sign
autographs and listen to fans all day.

                        Bruce

France Nuyen and Robert Culp were married for only about four or five
years in the late 60s/early 70s. As I told you, she met him when she
signed to do an episode of "I Spy." I found this out listening to
Culp's commentary on the Season One DVDs for "I Spy." He sounds to me
like he's got or had a huge ego and was very full of himself. Anyway,
he tells the story that his first "date" with Nuyen was to show her the
beach location in Southern Cal. where the episode of "I Spy" was going
to be filmed. This was in October 1965. He asked her to meet him at
the beach at 8 A.M. the next morning. What he didn't know, and
wouldn't find out until years later, was that Nuyen was unaware that
the next morning was the first day of Daylight Savings Time. She
didn't know to put her clock back an hour the night before, so she got
to the beach an hour early and had to wait for him all
                        alone. He said
that she didn't say a thing about it at the time but was secretly
furious over it, and years later when she divorced him, she cited this
incident as one of the reasons why.

I also believe I read someplace that France Nuyen and Marlon Brando had
an affair in the late fifties or early sixties, and that when he dumped
her, she tried to kill herself or had a nervous breakdown at least.

Also, do you folks known that France Nuyen once played Charlton
Heston's mistress in a 1962 movie called DIAMOND HEAD? In it, she dies
                        giving birth to his baby.

                        Thanks Rory.

That was a fascinating read on Wilson, a man who never really got the
credit he deserved because of the blacklisting. And his upbringing and
views on life sure do reflect in many instances on the POTA script.

PS: I would hardly label this as OT.

By that logic if the script had said Governor
Breck's assistant was a white guy then he's
white.  Anyone who has seen what scripts
become by the time they hit the screen
knows the script is not Law.  And that
eyeshadow wen over the ape makeup
Was this some Tranny Male Orang?

The script says the character is a he, so it is a he.
