The original LD of PLANET was notorious among collectors for the poor
transfer. Something about the balance of the greens and generally looking washed
out color-wise.
Chris L.
>>I believe PLANET's 1991 laserdisc, which of course had a terrible
transfer, was pressed in Japan and at least as far as I know never rotted.

I've had very little experience with laser rot. Maybe six out of approx
1000 titles... I had a lot of "dirty" pressings I had to exchange in the
day, but even now most of my discs are fine. The laserdisc data base keeps
track of rot reportings and which titles are most likely to, to this
day...
url please.
>>Yeah, I don't watch the four sided CAV movies anymore because
of the flipping, but my one disc movies I'll watch... <<
I have an auto reverse player, so the flipping was never a problem. Certain
films like THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN came out with the first disc in CLV and the
second in CAV so you could get a clear still screen if you wanted. I think
BATMAN FOREVER was the same way. The push was that the third act always
contained the most action, so the viewer would want to 'study' the scenes more
intently in either slow motion or by pausing.

For what it's worth, when I was communicating with Fox earlier in the year
I was really pushing that they should include the bonus material with the
appropriate movie i.e. 'A Look Behind the Planet of the Apes' should go on
CONQUEST because it was released in 1972, 'That's Hollywood' (which
unfortunately wasn't included) should go on BATTLE because they were closely
related in terms of when they were released (plus there's not a whole lot of
other bonus material for BATTLE), Don Taylor and J. Lee Thompson directing
should go on each respective movie, and so forth instead of the random
collection of extras that's been thrown on previously released
versions. Chance are someone else came up with the idea there, but at least
there's some logical thinking going on.

I'll double check this week when FXM runs the marathon. I'll be curious to
see if there's any difference with this scene between the two different cuts of
the film.

Cut in half by the force of the explosion, drifted to shore, and
partially buried in the sand. Rory's explanation of what happened to the
landscape makes a lot of sense too.
Chris L.
>>I've always thought that the Statue of Liberty was blown in half
and sunk beneath the waters just off Liberty Island. The cliff beside the
ruined staue two thousand years later is the eroded side of the island. I
also believe there was a lowering of the sea level and much interior erosion of
the landscape. Also notice that the ruins of Manhattan no longer have
water around them, and the ruins aren't buried, but are a rubble of decaying
concrete and steel. <<
>>Since everyone is caught in theories these days, I was
wondering. What does everyone here think? - Statue of Liberty
- "Cut in half" or "Buried under 2000 years of earth?"

From that photo, you can't tell whether or not that banner in the upper
right is part of the float or hanging from one of the buildings in the
background.
Did anyone here actually see the float in person? Or on TV for that
matter?

What he never acknowledges though is the fact that if it weren't for the

>>Opps - He mentioned that he was from the generation of Planet of
the Apes and 2001. And thanks to Star Trek, the conventions came to be which
latter lead to ComicCon (Being that it was a ComicCon Icon

him to mention POTA. <<

Naw, Fox didn't learn a thing from the
popularity of POTA (they're still scratching their heads about it to this day).
"Star Wars" got made because of the popularity of Lucas' "American Graffiti". He
was just an innovative filmmaker (back then) that made people take notice. They
had a long -running film franchise in POTA, and merchandising galore, but they
were so negative about the potential of "Star Wars" that they gave Lucas the
sequel and merchandising rights if he didn't lobby for the upfront money he
could've demanded after "Graffiti". This was the same year or the year
after POTA's long run came to an end and they didn't get it.
While we're on the topic, it'll be
interesting to see how Fox's reported $120 million "Australia" flick does this
week. Overblown flops led Fox into POTA's arms 40 years ago.

11PM. I've also seen both times advertised on Adult Swim, so I have no
idea what's going on.
Another segment that was pretty funny was a 'Take your daughter to work

one of those things you have to watch a couple times to appreciate.

I sold my Plasma and got LCD 120Hz. Not one regret yet.
Also what helps a great deal is buying the HDMI 1000 Monster cable. Yes, the most expensive cable out there.
Sharpens your HD picture even more and makes the picture shine like gold. I kid you not. Picture pefect.

.html.html Having owned an LG 42" Plasma and Panasonic 42" Plasma. I would say that the only advantage to a Plasma is that a standard TV signal and standard DVD looks much better on a Plasma. But when it comes to HD, LCD is the better quality. Especially a Sony LCD 120Hz.
My first Plasma, the LG went bad after the first year and a half. And of course the Panasonic I just sold to buy the Sony LCD 40" 120Hz.
The Sony I just got was a great deal. $1300, marked down from $1700 at dell.com (now back up to $1700).
And only six months ago that same TV was well over $2000.
But in the end, it's like all things. To each his or her own taste.
Personally I have no regrets. And with POTA now on blu-ray, I certainly don't miss my Plasma. Plasmas run very hot and waste a lot of electricity. And can easily turn any room into a hot box.

this is john, i have the samsung 46650
with the monster 1000 i know what im talking about. the pioneer
plasma would have been better. look its all up to personal preference
i have my samsung calabraited and it looks very close to film not the
fish tank look. a movie screen puts out 16 fottlamberts of light the
average tv owner pushes their tv to put out almost 3000 footlamberts.

The Godfather has grain. Does
that make it a bad film?

*** Did you not read some of the other posts
regarding some of the possible ways the ship was raised?
Apparently not, because there were some ideas thrown out which
did not include an outlandish idea of a third ship... They may
not be something everyone agrees on, but at least they stuck
within the established facts of the first two
films...
Let me ask you, how could Milo know where this
alleged third ship was supposed to be? Did he talk with the crew
members? Did they say "We left an operational ship lying around
in what your people call 'The Forbidden Zone'... Sure, we could
use it to get the hell outta here, but we've decided to just
leave it around for you to use..."
And, you should be asking yourself the same
question you asked above: Whether it's Taylor's ship (as we all
know it is), or the pretend third ship, how would Milo have
known when to launch it? Asking a question like this in
questioning how it could be Taylor's ship is totally pointless
and is no defense to your POV. ***
Besides, this third ship is much smaller than Taylor's; it
even had a side hatch where Taylor's didn't. In addition
to this, there has been several stills from the deleted scenes
on ESCAPE that clearly showed three seats sitting side-by-side,
whereas in Taylor's, there were four...two in front and two in
the back.
*** I
am sick of hearing about the side hatch and smaller
size... You want to know why it was smaller: Because in ESCAPE,
they used the nose prop from PLANET... The different interior
was made up with three seats because it suited their needs for
the unused opening sequence and the side hatch was put on
there because it too was redressing for what they felt was
needed for their opening scene...
When
they were making that film, I'm sure they didn't sit there
thinking how this ship would be analyzed years from then. At the
time of ESCAPE's release, repeated viewings of the films weren't
as accessible as now so the general public probably wouldn't
have given any thought to it looking different, if they even
noticed it at all... They knew it was supposed to be
Taylor's ship because everyone in the film said it is...
Saying
there was a third ship makes about as much sense as
someone saying "That can't really be Zira, after all, she
doesn't look the same in this film as she did in PLANET... That
has to be a second female..." Or someone saying "There has to be
a different ape that was named Cornelius because in BENEATH not
only does that ape not look like he did in PLANET, he is also
taller, so that can't be the same character... " These two
examples hold about as much water as your redressed prop theory
hold... Visual differences aside, we all know that regardless of
the film, it was still Zira, BENEATH's Cornelius was supposed to
be the Cornelius from PLANET, and the ship in ESCAPE is still
Taylor's...
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~
Wait,
I just thought of an idea: The ship in ESCAPE really is a third
ship after all... It was the ship from the TV series...
Councillor Zaius really didn't have that ship blown up, he had
it preserved for study... And after 900 years, it managed to
work it's way across the continent perfectly intact, never
giving way to age or the elements... After 900 years, it ended
up on the east coast where Milo got his hands on it and used it
to get Zira and Cornelius back in time to give birth to their
peoples new savior... It was all part of Councillor Zaius'
master plan... He knew there would come a time when a three
seated prop ship with a side-hatch door would come in handy...
Good thing he talked to those astronauts, they knew the
score... |
No, I did not have to firmware upgrade my Panasonic BD30 player after I got it. A label on the back tells me it was manufactured in May 2008, and when I learned on Panasonic's website how to check what level of firmware is in the player I found it was version 2.0.
one of their bad ape heads. Could be from last years auction. I
remember seeing a lot of heads. I don't recall any apes going on the
It only airs the one time so be sure to fire up your DVRs. I think the Fox Movie Channel has already been showing it. I could be wrong but "A Look Behind the POTA" is the featurette they showed after the first CBS showing of BENEATH and is made up of bits from the PLANET NATO film and clips from BENEATH and the featurettes on the making of ESCAPE and CONQUEST, nothing on BATTLE.
By the way, on Thanksgiving day, the channel will be showing all those ridiculously title TV show "movie" compilations. I know there's some here that want those. I wonder if the print quality will be worse than how good the episodes look on DVD. I'll bet so.
wondering if anyone else has noticed that the Italian movie poster
for "Escape" has three large color photos superimposed over Zira &
Cornelius on the run. The photo in the center is a large color photo
of the three chimps in their space suits sitting in the cabin of the
Icarus. That is just more proof that the sequence was actually filmed.
Jeff (RedSpy)
In the "making of" featurette on the Blu-ray for ESCAPE, Joe Russo says that the sequence was filmed while they show behind-the-scenes stills of it being shot. Too bad they couldn't actually show what was shot!
TVGuide.com has this listed for Friday 11/28 as opposed to Saturday 11/29.
Strangely, the FMC doesn't list it for either Friday OR Saturday, and their
schedule on the 'Channel of the Apes' pages doesn't match up to TVGuide.com.
Neither "Impact of the POTA" or "A Look Behind the POTA" is listed at
all.
AFAICT, both "Impact of the POTA" and "A Look Behind the POTA" air
only once- Thursday 11/27 @ 7:30 PM and Friday 11/28 @ 7:30 PM,
respectively. "Evolution of the POTA" airs multiple times on Thursday,
Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Out of curiosity, I wonder if "A Look Behind the POTA" is the 1972 special?
Also worth noting is the fact that Fox Legacy: Planet of the Apes clocks in
at 150 minutes, which means that we have almost 40 minutes of Tom Rothman
(Chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment) commentary at the beginning/end of
the film.
>>What's this about them showing the uncut Conquest? <<
That's what the guy at FMC told me via e-mail, plus it's listed at http://www.foxmoviechannel.com/event/.
BATTLE is also listed as being the extended cut. As for
CONQUEST, we'll find out in a little over 24 hours as the first scheduled
airing is Thursday night at 2:30 AM (technically Friday morning). Remains to be
seen, but TVGuide.com has the running time at 105 minutes as opposed to the
usual 88 so that's *something*. But the regular version of PLANET (the non Fox
Legacy version), BENEATH and ESCAPE are clocking in at 120 minutes, and
BATTLE at 105. As I mentioned in my other message, Fox Legacy: Planet of the
Apes clocks in at 150 minutes.
As for the TV Movies, the first three clock in at 120 minutes, and the last
two at 105. Not sure what- if anything- to make of that.
>>Also the 29th is Saturday. Escape is on as a Triple Feature.
<<
That's an odd choice, as it's the weakest of the five. Why burn up six
hours like that, unless they're figuring that the 8PM-2AM time slot on a
Saturday will have the fewest viewers. Coincidentally, they're doing the same
thing Friday night with Fox Legacy: Planet of the Apes- three times in a row,
starting at 8PM. Which means that I'll probably miss the 4AM showing of
BENEATH...
FMC has been doing Friday and Saturday night triple plays for some time now. It ensures that all time zones get the same movie in primetime when viewing is highest. Planet is an obvious choice for Friday night. Why Escape was choosen for Saturday night is a mystery. It could be the luck of the draw or maybe the programmers as FMC felt it was the strongest entry in the series after Planet.
Chris L.
The Fox Movie Channel pretty much burns up all their movies. They don't have the number of titles that Turner Classic Movies have, so they have plenty of repeat viewings. I never worry about missing anything on the Fox Movie Channel. They repeat everything over and over and I'll bet they'll be showing the APES for months!
Anyway, on Friday and Saturday nights they have what they call their "Triple Plays," they show the same movie three times in a row. They do this EVERY Friday and Saturday night. Again, it's because they don't really have enough movies to show and don't license other titles from other studios. The Fox Movie Channel is basically a promotional vehicle for Fox product (20th Century Fox movies, DVDs, TV Shows, and the Fox Network and FX cable channel). Fox is now probably THE most commercial of all the studios, thanks to a certain Aussie dude. Fox isn't quite the Rat (i.
e. Disney), but they're on their way.
That's the 'A Look Behind the POTA', right? The one with David Chow?It's
already been on (at least) two times today). Ditto for IMPACT, which was run
after the first TV movie.
Didn't someone here just write that it was originally aired by CBS after
their first airing of BENEATH? Interesting how BATTLE isn't even alluded to
in that documentary. You'd figure you have a built in audience and that would
have been the right time to announce the fifth film.
Chris L.
>>The Fox Legacy commentary is only scheduled for 15 minutes prior
to Planet. However, there might be more after the film. More likely
the extra time will be taken up by filler and promos. This morning
they already ran the original trailer for Planet as well as the the
POTA Featurette with David Chow being made-up as an Chimp.
.htmlWell, Al was right. Fox head of production Tom Rothman, after they showed PLANET, announced that indeed a new APES script is ready and that a new APES movie is in the works, BUT it hasn't exactly been greenlit yet, so he showed a clip from PLANET with Lucius saying, "Dr. Zaius, what about the future?" We'll have to wait and see.
By the way, the transfer of PLANET they showed was the same one they showed years before on the channel (I think back in 2002), the 30th Anniversary THX VHS, LD and non-anamorphic DVD transfer, which is OK, but it makes me really wonder if they are actually going to show the Preview Version of CONQUEST in a few hours. I won't be staying up to see, but I have the DVD recorder programed.
BENEATH was first shown on CBS after BATTLE had come out. "A Look Behind the POTA" was indeed shown after that broadcast and didn't contain anything on BATTLE probably because BATTLE was still circulating theatrically or they didn't have access to footage, I don't know! Anyway, the summer of '73 BATTLE comes out and the unofficial "Go Ape!" marathons start. In September, CBS has the broadcast premiere of PLANET and the ratings are huge. They quickly follow with showings of BENEATH in October, then ESCAPE in November. On Christmas Eve 1973 my brother and I went to a double feature of CONQUEST and BATTLE at a local theatre. Boy, that was sure a season of the Apes.
Rothman is infamous. He reportedly had a
"Wolverine" set repainted while the director was away because he didn't think
the movie would appeal to kids. "X-Men" is the only franchise Fox has left. The
only way they're going to do a new "Apes" is if they remake "Beneath" and the
mutants sprout claws. "We don't kill our enemies...hell, yes we do!"
Probably flogging a dead horse here, but anyway . . .
I was looking at Conquest to see if it was the new version
and got to the bookshop scene, and here's my evidence
that the Orangette in question is in fact, female.
When she looks up on the shelf for the book,
no hairpiece on the chin. Just like a Chimpette.
Show me a male Orang without one.
Random odds and ends here. Feel free to discuss or ignore at your
leisure.
TV MOVIES
* During the scene where Virdon and Burke break up the fight between Kraik
and his father, I realized that's the same location where the cage was in the
first two films. You see that 'V' shape in the mountains in the background that
you also see when Cornelius and Zira kiss in PLANET and also when Zira and
Lucius are leaving with Taylor and Nova in the wagon. I believe there are images
of the V shape in the 'Filming Location' section of the group.
* In the brainwashing episode, the actress who played Wanda was SERIOUSLY
channeling Kim Hunter's Zira.
* In the scene where the grain shipment is hijacked by Virdon, Burke et al,
a section of Goldsmith's score from PLANET is, well, aped. Ditto for when the
barn is burned down and the aftermath. I heard some of Rosenman's BATTLE score.
There was also some PLANET sounding cues when the trio was trying to escape from
the hospital in the brainwashing episode. Just before the time you see all
those gorillas with their legs in traction.
* Being that the TV series first came to The 4:30 Movie back in November of
1979, a marathon of the five telemovies seems apropos. Oddly enough, I don't
recall the five separate film titles. It's almost like they just ran them all
together, played what fit in the slot, and then picked it up the next day. I'll
have to see if I can find a TV Guide from back then.
* Stating the obvious: loads of familiar scenery from the Fox Ranch in the
TV Series. I had forgotten how much.
* The sound on the first telemovie was pretty bad- almost like it was in
Mono. But the other four seemed to have a Hi-Fi mix.
PLANET
* Did we really need the statues from the Burton film in the background of
the Fox Legacy intro? Or Rothman's repeated defense of the movie?
* Major factual error: the success of POTA brought about such films as
2001: A Space Odyssey. Such an incorrect statement for so many different
reasons. Much like PLANET, 2001 had been in the works for several years before
finally coming out in 1968.
* In the scene where Zaius is tied up at the end, you see a barrel (with a
metal lattice around it) in the upper left section of the screen. Someone
has posted here once asking about the items lying around the beach thinking they
were all artifacts, but in this case you see those same barrels in the
wagon when Taylor and Nova are in it. Look at the scene where Taylor is nodding
off- the barrels are right behind him.
* Has anyone visited where that scene was filmed? I always
wondered if that cave was real or dug into the face of the cliff for the
movie.
BENEATH
* For the first time, I noticed there was a collar was lying on the
ground near where Nova was sleeping just before Brent does his short soliloquy.
I always wondered what happened to both their collars because when Brent first
makes the discovery they both have them on. The next time you see them, they're
both off.
* Unfortunately, they didn't broadcast the version with the corrected
audio. So much for owning a proper version of BENEATH on DVD without buying the
Blu-ray set.
ESCAPE
* Well, I'm here writing this instead of watching the movie, so that says a
lot right there. However, ESCAPE does contain one of my favorite scenes from the
POTA series. Specifically, where Hasslein and the President are debating what to
do about Zira and Cornelius and if they have the right to alter the future. As
Greg once pointed out to me, it really does humanize Hasslein's character
instead of making him just a standard bad guy. When I see Braden's
performance, it reminds me of how much I hated the way he was portrayed in the
Marvel adaptation always sneering and shouting with a frenzied look on his
face.
IMPACT OF THE POTA
* On a few occasions, I was channeling Dave from Code Monkeys. And no, I'm
not explaining what that means. :-) Just a few moments of
self-entertainment is all.
GENERAL
* Did we REALLY need that NATO presentation shown over and over? I mean, it
is interesting to hear the different dialog takes (ditto for the conspicuously
absent NATO presentation for BENEATH), but man did that get annoying.
* Upon seeing both this and the PLANET trailer, I was put in mind of how
the original intent was for the audience to be shocked/surprised the first time
they saw the Apes during the hunt scene (I believe I first heard this in
the BEHIND documentary). Remember that initially you only see the legs of the
horses, or the corn stalks being whipped down, etc. Yet, you fully see the
apes in the trailer and (presumably) the TV spots. Wouldn't that ruin the
surprise?
* The surprise factor was also used as an excuse to cut out the original
opening of ESCAPE and have the audience be shocked when the apes remove their
helmets. So then why was that scene also included in the trailer?
* Contrary to what I thought, I'm actually getting a kick out of the
bumpers. "Yeah everything's fine. Well, because most of the humans are dead."
Also, the bit with Ursus and a gorilla solider looking at a FLAMMABLE sign and
shrugging their shoulders is pretty funny too. Not sure if that's supposed to be
an reference to the fact that he almost activated the Doomsday Bomb in
BENEATH, but either way it works.
BTW, ESCAPE just ended and the 'Coming Next' bumper said that CONQUEST was
the Extended Cut. So since the differences are seen in the third act, I should
know for sure in about 75 minutes. I'll try to post once more before calling it
a night and let everyone know.
Dear Kevin,
If it is a re-make of Conquest, who would you cast
?
Anthony Hopkins as Breck?
How about Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Meryl Streep
as Cornelius and Zira for the flashbacks?
Nick Nolte as Armando?
Who would play Caesar though?
