Yeah, that's something I tend to forget about, too.
My favorite author is Robert McCammon, and one of his most popular
books is SWAN SONG, a post-apolyptic novel set after a nuclear war.
I've actually seen blog reviews from twenty-somethings who loved the
book, but stated that the setting was unrealistic. They have no idea
that when it came out in 1987, nuclear war was not only a possibility,
it had seemed an inevitability for my entire life.

Agreed!

Ah, the old "Empty Box" promotion- absolutely brilliant marketing. And
for those of you wondering what I'm talking about:
"Back in 1977, Kenner celebrated the launch of the original Star Wars movie with a truly unique item: the "Empty Box"
promotion. With the runaway success of Star Wars and no
time to produce their now-famous figures in time for the holidays, Kenner
offered Star Wars fans an alternative: an Empty Box
that included no figures, but instead contained a mail-in certificate that fans
could redeem for four 3.75 Star Wars action figures by mail-- the very first Star Wars figures ever made. "
Chris L.
>>Same was true of Star Wars. There was little or no merchandising
in 1977, the year the film came out. Most of the agreements were made after
the film proved to be a big hit and the products didn't start to appear until
almost a year later. << <.html

It's too bad that there aren't any old U-matic tapes of that
broadcast. It'd be interesting to see them again with all the commercials from
the time, the bumps, and that great theme music CBS had for 'A CBS Special Movie
Presentation' with the French Horns.
Chris L.
>>I think it was the huge ratings the first three films got in their
network showing in the fall of 1973. I recently found a list of the
highest rated theatrical films shown that season (AIRPORT was #1 with
PLANET #2) and even ESCAPE had a 50% share of the entire national
audience the night it was shown. <<
>>One thing that Dr. Dolittle did was make merchandisers unwilling to
sign on to a film property that was unproven. Most likely that was why
most of the POTA merchandise did not happen until the TV series. By then
POTA was a proven quantity. << <.html

.htmlI think the old vs. new BSG debate could go on for quite some time, but
since this is a POTA group I'll let this one rest before it goes on too
long. :-) However- just to clarify- I'm not saying that the new BSG
is a bad show, poorly written/acted/directed or anything like that. My
problem with it is simply that it's not Battlestar Galactica. If you want
to tell a story, go for it. I maintain though that if this had been
called something else, it wouldn't have lost an iota of respect/positive
criticism that it's fan have for it. Nor would there have been the split
between the two fan groups, and in fact more of the old fans might have
been willing to give a new Sci-Fi series a look. Water under the bridge
now, but the next person thinking of dusting off an old series wanting to
update it might want to think of a better way to build a fan base as
opposed to doing something that divided it before the premiere even
aired.
Another thing to remember is that if the original didn't have such a
diehard following and people writing to Universal requesting something
new year in and year out, you'd have to wonder if the new version would
have happened in the first place. I remember seeing Glen Larson on a show
called Sci-Fi Vortex back in 1996/97, and he had mentioned a recent
meeting at Universal where they told him about the high interest in
Battlestar Galactica. Originally Bryan Singer was going to do the show
for Fox, but delays forced him to drop out to direct X2, and only then
did they take a different direction. That certainly helped upset the old
fans who were under the impression that the original series was going to
be continued. It would have been like us being told that Fox was going to
do a sixth POTA film in the established storylines we all know, and then
getting the Burton film. Again, not talking about the quality of the
finished product, but rather the radical departure from the original.

Well, it's not really a blooper, but you know what I'm talking about.
Just as the scene in the bookstore ends, Lisa goes outside and pauses
to look back at Caesar. In the background behind her is one of the
gorilla extras just leaning against a wall, seemingly watching the
scene being shot.

.htmlJessica, I think your success or failure as Zira will only in part depend upon how you look - looking authentic helps, no doubt about it, but a greater part of your success will be how you 'project' yourself. If YOU believe you are Zira, others will too, and they will love you for it. I've been lucky enough to come face-to-face with 'Zira' and even though her wig was slipping she completely won me over. Her looks didn't come into it, what enchanted me was her manner and personality. Much of your personality bleeds from between the lines of your posts and I believe you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Nerves can sometimes be a good thing, they keep you alert and on your toes, but otherwise just relax at Wondercon and enjoy yourself. Dave B

10 years ago I had one of the best POTA dedicated websites on
the internet but overtime it "fell apart"
I really feel that POTA
deserves a nice Fan Club site I want it to be a great useful site for
dedicated fans but more importantly to non-POTA fans to draw them in with a
great variety of useful info on the series that will make them want to watch
these classic movies etc.
Hunter's site landed up being what I originally
wanted mine to be 10 yrs ago He now definitely has the best site for POTA
product for sure so no sense going that same route but I want something to
lure new fans in
I am still a bit short of time but it doesnt do us much
good having a website empty and useless
So if any fans would like to help
participate in helping upgrade the website I'd appreciate any help or
input
I'm open to ideas from you all - thanks Lets give POTA the

One thing that strikes me about all the sites that are up and running
at present , really only caterers for the american market.
This doesn't mean i have a problem with this but very little info or
events seem to happen here in the U.K if this could be incompused
then that could be of interest that none of the other sites seem to
do at present.
If i am wrong i'm sure another member will inform us and put me right

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by that, Mark? Hunter's downloads can
be downloaded the world over? The message boards and websites simply
reflect what is happening in the world of POTA. Thought's, opinions

Ah, the old "Empty Box" promotion- absolutely brilliant marketing. And for those of you wondering what I'm talking about:
"Back in 1977, Kenner celebrated the launch of the original Star Wars movie with a truly unique item: the "Empty Box" promotion. With the runaway success of Star Wars and no time to produce their now-famous figures in time for the holidays, Kenner offered Star Wars fans an alternative: an "Empty Box" that included no figures, but instead contained a mail-in certificate that fans could redeem for four 3.75" Star Wars action figures by mail-- the very first Star Wars figures ever made. "
Chris L.
>>Same was true of Star Wars. There was little or no merchandising in 1977, the year the film came out. Most of the agreements were made after the film proved to be a big hit and the products didn't start to appear until almost a year later. <<

There are plenty of "behind-the- scenes" photos, but very few that I
would consider "blooper" photos. I have a lobby card from BENEATH in
which one of the caged humans in the background is wearing a bathrobe
in the cage; a CONQUEST photo in which a gorilla is wearing eyeglasses;
and another BENEATH photo in which a gorilla is wearing a hair ribbon.
I would consider the first two as "bloopers", and the third as probably
a "behind-the- scenes" shot.

.htmlTerry,
There are a lot of great groups and websites there with a lot of great resourses. Hunter's is probably the premier site on the web at the moment. But Alex also has a great site. Roger Alford's Forbidden Zone website is still very good. And of course the group website here and it's mirror site. All have huge resourses with very little overlap.
The one thing that is missing is a directory or database of all these resources. You could make your site into that database to make it easier for fans and even non-fans to find and access these resources.
Often we get members asking where they could find a script or scan of the lobby cards or comic or a video or something else. Your site can list of of these things with links to where they could be found. This would help unify the resources of all sites and groups in one place making your site the ultimate web catalog of all things POTA.

.htmlYes, I love breakfast best! I love to eat, but yes, I can definitely cook. Don't like to admit it though otherwise I'd have to spend more time in the kitchen. But the natives in the household never complain unless it's something too freaky for them to eat. What makes my cooking special is I always add my secret ingredient. Want to know what that is? When nobody's looking, I always sprinkle it with love. My sister in law when she came to visit was pleasantly surprised. She wanted to know what kind of juju I added, but really it was nothing.
First outfit was UFO Moonbase personnel. A lot of people in the office didn't get that. But we always dress up for Halloween at work. Person in second photo is the other ape fan of the household, Ashton, the youngest of my three boys. He is only four years old, but he loves Planet of the Apes. One time, when my hair was in a pony tail, he took the tail end of it, put it on the back of his hands for fur and said, Mommy, look! Do I look like an ape? He is always trying to tie together a gorilla bandolier from the karate belts we have laying around. He's my very clever little ape and I am so proud of him.
I was thinking that even if I don't look exactly like Zira, I can definitely look like her younger sister!!! I want to do something really crazy and fun. Maybe I'll shoot some hoops and post that on YouTube. We'll see if I have time. Maybe not. But it would be fun to see that.
Some of the makeup glues and whatnot finally arrived today. I will need to test them out on my skin and make sure I am not allergic. I will paint the foam latex with more detail before I glue it down so I will only have to worry about blending the edges. Two more weekends left. I still have to sew the fake leather onto the green jacket and finish the edges of my boots. It's 80% done.

I'd like to add a little something...When we did
Comic Con, Lacey memorized lines from the first 3 films. She was able to
incorporate the lines in every encounter we had. POTA fans really enjoyed
that. Some of the people interviewing us (even the Mexican stations) were
reciting lines alomg with us. And, NONE of it sounded
rehearsed.

Jessica,
I think your success or failure as Zira will only in part
depend upon how you look - looking authentic helps, no doubt about it, but a
greater part of your success will be how you 'project' yourself. If YOU
believe you are Zira, others will too, and they will love you for
it.
I've been lucky enough to come face-to-face with 'Zira' and even
though her wig was slipping she completely won me over. Her looks didn't come
into it, what enchanted me was her manner and personality.
Much of
your personality bleeds from between the lines of your posts and I
believe you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Nerves can sometimes be a
good thing, they keep you alert and on your toes, but otherwise just relax at
Wondercon and enjoy yourself.

Yeah. Oliver Stone's people wanted Rick
Baker in the beginning but eventually Arnold Schwarzenegger got involved. He,
James Cameron and Stan Winston were real tight so as long as Arnold was
involved, Winston was the man. Arnold was on it forever, from Stone, Columbus,
and Cameron told me Arnold and Winston were the reason he got involved. By the
time Cameron left Arnold's box office was mud so Fox wasn't as eager to have him
in it. Tim Burton brought back Rick Baker.
I don't know when that art was done but
Stone's was the only version set in the past (until Burton's, kinda) and that's
when Winston started, so that's my assumption. He did his makeup test during the
Columbus era. Pictures of that also in the book. It's a pretty cool
book, also a picture of him from the POTA TV show.
He really wanted to do POTA and was
disappointed it went to Baker. He used to dress up his son for Halloween as
POTA. It's a touchstone for makeup artists.

I would consider the first two as "bloopers", and the third as probably
a "behind-the- scenes" shot.

By the
time Cameron left Arnold's box office was mud so Fox wasn't as eager to have
him in it. Tim Burton brought back Rick Baker.
I don't know when that art was done
but Stone's was the only version set in the past (until Burton's, kinda) and
that's when Winston started, so that's my assumption. He did his makeup test
during the Columbus era. Pictures of that also in the book. It's a
pretty cool book, also a picture of him from the POTA TV show.
He really wanted to do POTA and was
disappointed it went to Baker. He used to dress up his son for Halloween as
POTA. It's a touchstone for makeup artists.

I then ironed out the coarseness of the hair, made it as smooth as possible. I put a large curl on it with a hot curler....and then proceeded to augment the lace with fake dark brown hair two strands at a time, until you could not see the beard anymore. The human hair beard is just there for "volume & body". It took bloody forever, but you can't tell that it's a beard. That's the part that goes on Zira's forehead...an upside down human hair lace beard augmented with fake hair. Can you tell that it's a beard?

A lot of the old, old commercials that are popping up on You Tube are taken
from U-matic tape recordings of an *entire* television broadcast. That probably
the only way some of that stuff still even exists.

That was Rick Baker again.

The dinos may tie in with a comment I remember hearing about Fox
wanting 'The Terminator' but getting 'The Flintstones'.

The Thing with Two Heads--Rick Baker, King
Kong--Rick Baker, Kentucky Fried Movie--Rick Baker, Greystoke--Rick Baker,
Gorillas in the Mist--Rick Baker, Baby's Day Out--Rick Baker, Mighty Joe
Young--Rick Baker, Planet of the Apes--Rick Baker. Stan
Winston (actually guys that worked for Stan) did Congo and Instinct. I
think they also did the gorilla for the Cadbury commercial in the
UK

There was also someone who made great steps in the special effects
department in the way gorilla's looked . Does anyone remember Tarzan
legand of Greystoke , all i remember is when this came out they looked so
real ( who was responsible ? ). Mark --- In pota@yahoogroups. com, "Jeff"

Rick Baker in the beginning but eventually Arnold Schwarzenegger got
involved. He, James Cameron and Stan Winston were real tight so as long as
Arnold was involved, Winston was the man. Arnold was on it forever, from
Stone, Columbus, and Cameron told me Arnold and Winston were the reason he
got involved. By the time Cameron left Arnold's box office was mud so Fox
wasn't as eager to have him in it. Tim Burton brought back Rick
Baker. > I don't know when that art was done but Stone's was the only
version set in the past (until Burton's, kinda) and that's when
Winston started, so that's my assumption. He did his makeup test
during the Columbus era. Pictures of that also in the book. It's a
pretty cool book, also a picture of him from the POTA TV show. > He
really wanted to do POTA and was disappointed it went to Baker. He used to

Greetings. Here is a photo of Rick Baker's work for "The
Thing With Two Heads". He was definitely ahead of the curve in apes
makeup.

A lot of the old, old commercials that are popping up on You Tube are taken
from U-matic tape recordings of an *entire* television broadcast. That probably
the only way some of that stuff still even exists.

from the time, the bumps, and that great theme music CBS had for 'A CBS
Special Movie Presentation' with the French Horns.
