It's always interesting to see the early versions of stuff like this knowing what they eventually developed into. Thanks Tim!!

Greetings, everyone. Speaking of air holes, there is a very prominant
one in CONQUEST. If you watch the sequence closely where Caesar is
being tortured on the shock table, pay attention to his mouth. When
the camera is at his feet, looking up towards his face, you can see a
perfectly round air hole inside his muzzle. It is in the upper
appliance, in front of the front teeth (in other words, between the
front teet and the upper lip). I was really surprised the first time
I noticed this, as I felt they did such a good job on Roddy's makeup
for this film.

That's the air passage that John chambers came up with.  I noticed that in the super 8 b/w version of conquest back in '77.

It doesn't just happen in old films, if you look close on a lot of
films things like that become noticable, i have watched some films
more times than i want to count and if your the same things start to
pop out at you because you look more closely.
Although i had to watch the Burton P.O.T.A the other night with my
youngest ( who does like it? ) and tim roths charactor in a fight
with leo davidson , Thade's hand goes around Leo's neck and you see
the joints on the glove.
Not forgetting there are people out there who get of on finding
mistakes in films ( like a plane going overhead in a period drama ).
But in Planet of the Apes defence ( originals ) for the time and for
the quickness of them being rolled out to the general public ( and
four hours in make-up before the camera even starts to roll ) they
are masterpieces of modern Sci Fi and i wouldn't have it any other
way.
P.O.T.A till i die

I noticed one near the end of ESCAPE when Cornelius gets shot.  Right before he falls off the platform onto the ship's deck where Zira crawls over to him.

This is a perfect example of the sloppiness of the cinematography of
the sequels. Leon Shamroy and Franklin Schaffner made a conscious
effort to avoid this kind of shot, or a shot where your looking
right down the mouth of the apes, blackened teeth and all. On
everything after PLANET, it seems that there was less and less
thought put in to camera angles, just shoot it as if it were normal
human faces and move on. Once again showing that PLANET is the
classic, and everything else is just a sequel.

    Subject: Ted Post
    .html
This film directed by Ted Post will be playing at the Egyptian Theatre in LA on Feb. 13th....sounds like a big change from Beneath!!

THE BABY, 1973, 84 min. Dir. Ted Post (MAGNUM FORCE, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES). You can't get more cult than this original and odd film. The Wadsworths are a typical ordinary family: a strong-willed matriarchal mother (Ruth Roman, of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN), two lust-fueled daughters and a bouncing baby boy. Except the baby (David Mooney) is going on 30 years old, sits in a crib, wears diapers and sucks a bottle. When the family's new social worker (Anjanette Comer, of THE LOVED ONE) arrives, she takes notice of the baby and decides to do something about this dysfunctional household. The 1970s-era brightly colored sets evoke a "Brady Bunch" suburbia, but one that is slightly off-balance. The decaying Victorian Wadsworth mansion, a cross between something out of WILLARD and "The Munsters," adds to the neglected aura of the family relations. Cinematographer Michael Margulies uses skewed camera angles bolster the unsettling nature of this film, and
Gerald Fried's score creates an eerie atmosphere. Mooney is excellent as "Baby." One of the few films to present the subject of ABs (adult babies), Fetish Film Night's presentation is an experience that won't be replicated at your local multiplex and is essential for fans of fetish cinema. "…deliciously insane…the definition of cult, completely avoiding mainstream appeal and totally original." – Jason Cook, The Spinning Image

I've seen parts of it on cable over the years but it has never really captured my interest.

I did see a documentary on the making of the film once. Most of it was Anthony Newly telling stories of what a jerk Rex Harrison was to everyone else on the set.

I blame part of the problems in the sequels on FOX. They kept cutting the budgets which had to make it difficult to maintain the standard of quality in the films.

Greetings everyone.  I am patiently waiting for all of my orders to come in, and am busy doing mental gymnastics, trying to figure out how to successfully augment to the hairpieces I ordered for Zira's costume. At least I can start augmenting to the hair pieces, which may be a lot of work but well worth it in the end.  My plan for this weekend is to complete the hair augmentation to the hairpieces I already have in-house, and to start assembling all of the materials and bits to the costume in one general area of my bedroom.

While I agree that Greene takes things a step too far sometimes, he is correct that there was social commentary and allegory in the film. Mort Abrams stated in the Behind documentary that when they were making Planet the filmmakers knew they were making a political film.

The Battle pages are three pages edited out from the original
story. The art is NOT Herb Trimpe, it's by two very obscure Filipino
school artists, Sonny Trinidad and Virgil Redondo. The other page is
the third of three put up recently, art possibly by Sonny Trinidad
(I'm not totally sure--it could be him or him with another guy, Dino
Castrillo). This is from an unpublished story we've been calling
the 'Viraga Story' after a page that appeared some years ago now.I'm
flabbergasted at the price bid for these pages, unpublished, by
obscure artists, and I'm hoping no-one in here has felt duty bound to
bid, because these are $50-$70 pages in my opinion, but it's great to
see them, at least, and bodes well for more.John, Scrolls.

PLANET OF THE APES (1968) Sat.-Mon., Feb. 7-9
        SHOWTIMES:
        Sat-Sun, 2/7-8 @ Noon
        Monday, 2/9 @ 7:00

In this, the first in the APES saga, Heston's stone-chiseled features and bare chest bring us the movie that was to create an empire. After an accident in space, astronaut George Taylor (Heston) finds that he has crash-landed on a strange planet where humans are subservient to the Ape-Lords of the world. Finding himself less than welcomed, Taylor endures trials and tortures from the highly intelligent simians, forcing him to utter the first words ever spoken by a human to the apes, "Keep your hands off me you damn dirty apes!" Taylor desperately tries to regain his freedom and get off of the God-forsaken planet, only to discover that this foreign land may not be as distant as he suspected. Dir. Franklin J. Schaffer, 1959, USA, 112 min. New 35mm print courtesy of Criterion Pictures.

This looks like it is from Battle, not from an original story.

Dir. Franklin J. Yes, John.  Matt does do Cornelius masks in latex, too.  If you google "finkbuilt Cornelius," you will see my friend Steve's Cornelius mask made by Matt.

James, I do full scale as well (usually just for me).  So far I have dressed up as Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and a Balinese dancer.  I love to get dressed up!

Here are photos of my wig before and after styling.  I had to give it a little haircut.  It is sitting on a latex mask that I purchased from Matt Sotis.  The latex mask helps keep the wig from falling off the mannequin head because I don't have any toupee tape at the moment, and helps me imagine how Zira will look.  She is getting there!!

There are plenty of "behind-the-scenes" photos, but very few that I
would consider "blooper" photos. I have a lobby card from BENEATH in
which one of the caged humans in the background is wearing a bathrobe
        in the cage; a CONQUEST photo in which a gorilla is wearing eyeglasses;
and another BENEATH photo in which a gorilla is wearing a hair ribbon.
I would consider the first two as "bloopers", and the third as probably
        a "behind-the-scenes" shot.

I went to the Belcourt today to see "Planet of the Apes." There were
fewer than 20 people in attendance.

The print was a "new" 35mm print, but it wasn't brand-new. It was
clearly not an old print, but it had specks and scratches throughout
(most noticeably, of course, at reel changes). I loved seeing it on
the big screen, but the Blu-ray transfer on a 96" projection TV screen
was actually a much better viewing experience.

        .html
I will explain the fanzine situation for those who havent heard it before.
Ape Chronicles was printed bi-montly from 1991-1999

The fan club started being promoted on the internet in 1998 and my personal touring schedule as a performer
made the production of new issues vary sporadic and very few issues were put simply put because I didnt have time

However some people paid for memberships of 3 to 6 issues between 1999-2004 and yes was a gap of 5 years
in between issues.   I have always kept good records of all payments made directly to the website for new issues.
I know who paid for what issues and I know who are still owed issues.
Of course I could not mail new issues until they were actually released and this meant a real long wait for a few people unfortunately

Ironically I never planned to stop making new issues - but they just never happened.
Looking back it seems that Ape Chronicles had its original regular printing schedule of issues #1-36 from 1991-1999
Anybody who happened to pay after issue #36 did not receive anything in the mail for there were no new issues for years

Here is the release date of all issues in the past 10 years!
I always have the intention of keeping it going more regularly but as I really don't make any money off it its easy to get sidetracked
with other personal and business reasons

        #36 Feb 1999
        #37-39 2004
        #40-44 2008
        #45-47 (tentatively planned for 2009)

Everyone on the yahoogroups knows that in the past few years I have posted lists of people that paid for issues from 1999-2004 that I still owe issues to - but unfortunately as years went by I do not have any current email or mailing address info for them.

The good news is I think that the latest issues have been much better quality and quantity material than the earlier issues
For those who were original members from 1991-1999 they appreciated the dedication to POTA when there was nothing else there before the internet came along.    Simian Scrolls has done an amazing job of keeping the POTA fanzine idea going when Ape Chronicles stopped publishing regularly.

I am always happy to discuss this issue with anyone
For those who have known me promote POTA for the last 19 years I do everything I can to keep interest in our favorite series.

I was one of those 20 people and I would like to publicly apologize to
Hunter for not following up on our emails to meet at the screening. I
had every intention but between my email service acting up (delaying
several important messages), work being very intrusive this week, an
odd family occurance and my 11 year old's broken tooth (!) I was lucky
        my head didn't fly off.

Hunter- I am sorry we somehow did not connect today. I'm always glad
to meet fellow Ape fans and now wish I'd accosted everyone else in the
theater to find you. Hopefully at some future date- hopefully not 3974!

But I was there! And the loose toothed 11 year old was as well. My
desire to start him off with POTA correctly was a big success. His
only complaint was the ending. He had two problems- one I should have
foreseen but the other was... odd.

He didn't like the ending because he wanted to know what happened to
Taylor NEXT. I understood this concern (I remember a similar thought
when I was younger) and told him there were four sequels made. This
brightened his outlook quite a lot and he has requested a viewing of
the BENEATH soon. I have no problem with this!

But his other problem was something I should have considered- he
didn't get the idea of nuclear annihilation. He just doesn't have the
common reference of that fear as a Damocles sword hanging over him as
I did as a kid. He has not lived with the threat of imminent
destruction that makes that final revelation such a body blow. After I
explained this to him he got it but I suspect it's similar to getting
a joke and having it explained after everyone else is done laughing.
He understands but it didn't hit him like it might have. I would like
to call this a shame but I can't. I'm glad this kid doesn't think
about mushroom clouds sprouting over his schoolyard the way I often
did at his age. I'm glad he doesn't fear his mother and himself being
atomized in an instant because two nations can't agree on how to run
an economy. It's a shame he couldn't have the same response to POTA
that I and millions of others of our generation had- but I'm happy his
biggest worry right now is a messed up tooth and report on Abraham
        Lincoln.

Plus- he wants to see the sequel movies anyway. What does that say
about the qualities of a 41 year old movie?

I worked all day to hand tie two strands of hair at a time for Zira's hairline.  It was actually a human hair lace beard, but there was no way it could have been combed and blended into the main wig without the augmentation of the additional hair.  Thanks very much to Tom Trubalcava's explanations, I was able to forge ahead.

        Here are some photos.

The beard around her bottom jawline is just temporary.  It will still need to be cut and trimmed.

Now that you mention it I've never seen any bloopers from the POTA films either. There is some raw footage from Planet on the special edition "Behind" DVD but no bloopers. I'm sure FOX must have them down in the salt mine. They just have to send someone down there to find the stuff.

Surprised that there were so few people. I went to 3 different theaters last year that were showing POTA and all had fairly big crowds. Maybe the 12 Noon time was not convenient for most people.

Rory, I have no clue what I will do that day.  I'll see how long it takes me, since this will be the first time ever I will be under the glue.  I have liquid latex enroute to help blend the edges, but then again, until I get it in my damn dirty paws and do some hands on "practice" it's all just theory.

Well, if you have that Roddy McDowall home movie of him being made up
on the set of the original, just watch that a few dozen times, also
study every color photo you can view to get ideas.

Seems to me you'll do OK, at least as good as Apemania, though I
honestly feel they could do better. The makeup looked best in the
original film, that's the only reference I'd use as to how the makeup
        should look.
