Been there. It turned out to be a birthday party for Michelle Penn of G4, so it wasn't really an Apemania party. Brian Penikas was Ursus (his first time as an ape in 6 years), Cornelius (Duke) and Zauis (Laird) were there, but the birthday people set it up, including the backdrop (Statue of Liberty and the ship cardboard cutouts).
There was an Ursus cake which was delish. The story is she's a huge POTA fan and loves Ursus but when she was a kid she got a Zira cake because she's a girl. So she finally got her Ursus cake.
There was a raffle for a box set of the blu-rays, plus individual blu-rays and box sets of the regular DVDs (I didn't win). There was a separate bar situation with the movie screening (I guess DVD). This was kind of a cool place. Kevin Smith throws parties there. If you want to have a movie party this is the place to go.
I invited Eric Greene, so I interviewed him and Penikas for "Ape Chronicles". Not much else to do there. So nothing big, some fun for a couple of hours.

I specifically asked Eric about the infamous school bus tonight in my interview and he said that was the hardest thing to include. But he felt it would have been irresponsible not to include it because of the times "Battle" came out in. But he's perfectly fine with people not agreeing with him about it.

It's been said before and worth repeating: Sometimes, a schoolbus driving across the desert is *just* a schoolbus driving across the desert.

I once posted about Greene's interpretations that "If you broke it down to a mathematical formula, you'd have: If (situation or incident from POTA book, film, or TV show) and (obscure socio/political/ historical fact), we must therefore surmise that (logic defying and head scratching interpretation of aforementioned incident)".

or

Fictional Element x Obscure History = BS squared.

Jeff, I just bought some kryolan translucent face powder off of Ebay for $20 including s/h.

Rory, I will darken the edges especially around the eyes a bit more.  Didn't want to go too dark on the appliance because you can always add more later, but it will be hell to try to lighten it.  I just want to make sure that my skin color will match/blend with what's on the appliance.

For those of you who have gone under the goo, do you also cover the palms of your hands with rubber mask grease?  Is it lighter in color than what's on the back of the hands or the same?

Also,  Ben Nye would be the least expensive.  Most powders work the same, as long as they're transluscent or no color like I said in my last message.  In a pinch, baby powder, lightly applied, will work.  But, it will lighten the make up twice as much as the transluscent kind.

Jess,  Get transluscent or no color powder.  If you think it looks too matte after powdering, you can always dab the make up with a damp cooton ball.

Rory I need to get matte powder for the makeup.  Can you recommend a specific brand?

That color is pretty good, Jessica, but I'd still add to it once you
apply the pieces to your face. I'm talking real stage makeup (I assume
you have a kit?). If you look at Hunter as Zira in PLANET, you'll
notice her eyes are are heavily shaded. Also, the teeth will need to
be darkened and yellowed.

A lot of work.

G4 is a cable station that focus on computers, video games, ninja warriors and Arrested Development reruns.

Don't know who Michelle Penn is but if Olivia Munn was there. (And if she was there was she dressed as Nova?)

Don't do your palms!  Pancake (water based make up) is better on your hands than any grease or creme make up.  Also, the adhesive wont stick to rubber mask grease, so make sure you glue your hair down on your hands first.

I dunno. There's a singer named Michelle Penn that kind of looks like her; Brian Penikas told me G4 interviewed Apemania during the blu-ray promos and that gave Michelle's pals the idea for the party. He said they were associated with E! Entertainment.

I also want to recreate some photos of my favorite scenes from the first movie.  I actually sculpted movie-accurate operating room tables for my Megos...and I also have started a sculpt of a Mego-scale Lawgiver.  Not sure if all of these are photographed in my album "Jessica's Stuff."  All of these ape projects are personal and don't really have a deadline.  I just like to putz and putter with apes, my first love.

Our own Glen Scheetz was at last night's POTA party in LA. He asked me to pass on his account along with some pics: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/photos/album/893453623/pic/list

The Ivar is a two-story night-club on Hollywood Boulevard.  The outside is stuccoed arches and tinted windows.  The entrance gives one the feel of medieval brickwork and iron fixtures, but as we ascend the stairs, we are quickly transported into British tenement-cum-bohemian disco.  It's a nice place, with secluded boothed-alcoves on the one hand and a spacious theatre/lounge (The Cinescape) on the other.

This was where, on the night of Sunday, February 15th, a group of people got together to throw the "Party of the Apes".

These people got together to celebrate Michelle's (no last names, please) 29th birthday, by giving her a surprise party of family, friends, Apes fans -- and some of the "Planet of the Apes'" cast from Apemania (http://www.apemania.com/GREETING2.htm ).  From many of her friends I learned that she has wanted a "Planet of the Apes" themed party since she turned eight, and wanted a "Marcus" figure atop her birthday cake.  She, and we, were not disappointed Sunday night.

As we ascended the stairs from the street, the first thing we saw, as we reached the second level, was the coat-concession stand, seeming to rise out of the midst of a jungle.  Reaching the second floor, we saw faux "scarecrows" (pics #1, #2), based on the Forbidden Zone scarecrows mounted amongst the jungle ferns.  Passing the bar, and coming to the small dance floor, we arrived at the raffle table, where we received an "Apes" button (pic #3).  Turning about, we were facing the photo op backdrop (pic #4).  To the right of the photo op backdrop was the cake table.  One cake was a standard birthday "sheet" cake, but the other was a work of art -- a bust of General Ursus (pic #5).

Suddenly, a familiar British accent could be heard, and turning we were faced by a blustering Dr. Zaius, stamping his cane and spouting familiar invective quotes from the "Apes" movies.  Behind him swaggered General Ursus (pic #6), and close behind him scampered Dr. Cornelius (pic #7).  It was a thrill, to say the least.  These characterizations from the Apemania actors are right on.  They are professional to a fault, yet manage to interject some lightly-risqué good humor.

In the theatre, "Planet of the Apes" ran all night.  On the dance floor, Dr. Zaius, General Ursus and Dr. Cornelius enacted and posed for photos, with birthday-girl Michelle (pics # 8, #9), and guests (pics #10, #11) all night.  They even found time to read a little (pics #12, #13, #14).  As the night wore on, they even danced and "rough-housed" some (pics #15, #16, #17).

All in all, everyone had a wonderful night, at the "Party of the Apes".  My thanks to all involved.

Escaped chimpanzee Travis is coaxed into a waiting sport utility vehicle in downtown Stamford, Conn. in 2003.

A teenage ape raised like a human went berserk in Connecticut Monday, badly mauling a friend of his owner before cops shot and killed him.
Sandy Herold tried to stop the rampage by stabbing her beloved pet chimp, Travis, with a butcher knife, cops said.
"In an effort to stop him, she had to go after her pet of many years," said Stamford, Conn., police Capt. Rich Conklin.
But Travis, a normally docile 200-pound chimp that starred in a TV commercial for Old Navy cargo shorts and enjoyed human activities like drinking wine and surfing the Internet, could not be stopped.
When cops drove up around 4 p.m., the burly ape tore off a cruiser's side mirror and opened the door.
The officers had "nowhere to retreat," Conklin said, and shot him several times.
Bleeding from stab wounds and gunshots, 15-year-old Travis staggered down the driveway and into Herold's house, where he collapsed and died in a zoolike cage the size of a room.
Conklin said it wasn't clear what set him off, but theorized Travis' bout with Lyme disease - which can cause panic attacks, paranoia, personality changes and mood swings in people - could be connected. Travis was taking medication for the disease, Conklin said.
"These actions have not been seen in the chimpanzee before. This animal had been raised as a member of the family," Conklin said.
Conklin said Travis pounced on the victim, 55-year-old Charla Nash, as soon as she got out of her car to try to help Herold get the ape back in his cage.
He said Travis had been roaming in the yard after getting his hands on the house keys and freeing himself.
Herold, 70, had given the pyscho simian tea with Xanax to calm him down just before Nash arrived, cops said, and called 911 as the chimp mauled her friend.
A 911 dispatcher could hear the animal screaming in the background as he ripped into the victim.
Nash was in very critical condition at Stamford Hospital Monday night. She suffered serious facial injuries and may not survive, Conklin said. Her brother Steve Nash was rushing up from Virginia.
Herold told cops that Travis may not have recognized Charla Nash because she wore her normally long, flowing hair up Monday.
Herold and her husband, Jerome, who treated Travis almost like a child after the death of their daughter more than a decade ago, were distraught.
Conklin said the couple had owned Travis for close to 14 years.
Sandy Herold was taken to the hospital and treated for shock. Two cops were treated for minor injuries.
Neighbor Anthony Macary, 49, was flabbergasted that Travis had turned violent.

Thanks for the blessings--I will need it!

Class was canceled today so I was able to go to the local costume shop and get pancake makeup, too!!  I am so ready.  Wondercon, bring it on!!

The costume masquerade is February 28, 8:30 PM not March 1 as I originally thought.  So....I'll try to get there before 2PM to register, and just hang out and have fun, I guess.  For the effort I will put into the makeup I may as well wear it all day.  Was hoping to get some professional photos taken, but it doesn't look like it will be possible.  I'll see how it goes.

        Jessica.

I saw the news this morning on the Today Show. They showed a 3 minute segment on it. It was pretty sad.
Looked like something out from the new Caesar film (synopsis).

        weird.

I didn't see any mini posters except on the tables. Are those the post cards you sent out? I got a couple buttons. It says, "This election, 20th Century Fox wants you to go blu-ray" and has the "Go Ape" gorilla.
Didn't see Glen. Or Jeff. Just Eric and "drhasslein".

Yes, I have remover!  So once you're all made up, and glued up...as long as I don't sweat like a pig it should stay stuck, right?  So do I need to remember to bring glues and stuff for "touchup"??

And...I also got some pancake makeup today (since class was cancelled).

        You will probably sweat.
In fact you can sweat through it.
Which is a good thing and a bad thing.
I'd say the toughest part is keeping the
makeup off the hair.  That and sweating.
Kim got through it by keeping movement
to a minimum.  That and energy shakes.

It's been said makeup is a process
        not an effect.  Remember, actors
        have touch ups between takes
        and after lunch.  You probably
have to re-glue your jaw at
        some point during the day.

After wearing our apes all day at comic con, we had no need for touch ups (except on our lips).  But then again, I'm used to applying make ups to last for hours, for our haunted house.

I've sewn deep pockets in my brown underdress for keys, my ID, cash (and my plastic nemesis--I will try not to use that while at the con)...

Unfortunately, I have to carry a purse for the extra stuff I need for touch-ups and for my liquid nutrition.

So, in a nutshell, Jessica's gone to the Forbidden Zone.  Family is dismayed at the level of effort I put into my obsessions, but whatever.  I am here to have fun.

Wow!!  My translucent Kryolan anti-shine powder came today.  That was fast!!  And...I can also use it to deaden the shine when I paint up my action figures.  BONUS!!

I will definitely bring a digital camera.  I only have to sew the chest pocket behind the hieroglyph for a notepad, and MacGuyver a pen with some Apoxie...and I think that's it as far as tweaking my costume.  The moment of truth comes on February 28.  It's been a long 35 years of waiting to get my ape on.

David did you see my unfinished diorama using my mego-scale operating tables?  I'm reposting here for those who are not members of the Mego Museum.  I just had to photograph my Dr. Galen, but seeing him now I'm going to re-do him.  All my stuff is a work in progress.  When I see a previous project that I have not seen in awhile there is always something that I want to tweak.

At Joanne's on closeout.  I keep looking to see if they make more of it, but nothing yet.  It's the same fake leather (100% polyester) that I sewed up for Zira's outfit for me...so it's totally washable.  It photographs real well and is a very yummy chocolate color.  The greatest part of it is that it sews well, too.  For instance, I was able to sew this tiny outfit (Mego-scale) for somebody based on a photograph I found in the newspaper.  Which reminds me...I better add this to the thread, too.  I forgot all about it.

I should have taken a photo of that jacket on my hands.  I have tiny hands and that jacket fit on the palm of my hands perfectly.  :(

What made it extremely difficult is that the Mego female body is so very OFF in every possible way from your average female body...it totally threw me in a loop when trying to recreate the jacket.   The hips of the Mego female are ginormous and the shoulders so very nonexistent.  If you think Sideshow figures are hard to sew for...try sewing for a Mego female figure.  It could drive you ape.

Yes, I supplied the mini-posters and Glen supplied the copies of "The Ape" that were prizes in the raffle. Surprized that you and Glen didn't run into each other. Maybe you saw him and didn't know that was him.

Mark, don't worry...I've got a plan churning in my head regarding the Mego female.  My plan is someday to build her up from scratch with better articulation and be more anatomically correct.  I just have to figure out where to find the ball joints...I saw Doc's new female body, which is great...but it would be even more spectacular if I can make it.  And, crazy monkey me has that in the back of my head.  I can do it...I just have to try!!

          Jess.

Yeah, the owner of this chimp was a nut case. She's to blame for
everything that happened. I don't think she had a clue what the animal
was capable of, but I hope she gets prosecuted.

Boulle was wrong: you can't just bring an ape into the home and expect
it to turn into something it's not.
