.html.html i think one of the benifits to ware im employed is that i have on hand 1400 art students there is a girl there who sculpted a female body and she said she would sculp me a mego size anitomicly correct figure so i can make bodies from if she comes threw for me (students are notorious slackers) then i will pass it along jessica no promises but shes done some favors and after all you dont want to piss your chef off right?

Mark, don't worry...I've got a plan churning in my head regarding the Mego female. My plan is someday to build her up from scratch with better articulation and be more anatomically correct. I just have to figure out where to find the ball joints...I saw Doc's new female body, which is great...but it would be even more spectacular if I can make it. And, crazy monkey me has that in the back of my head. I can do it...I just have to try!!

.html Hello Ape fans - I come in peace.
Last year I reproduced the four original Planet of the Apes
Megos for Diamond Select Toys. The plan was to mix up new
and vintage figures, but Fox did not allow DST to make any
figures outside of the first film.
Sales to retailers last year were not great but there were
no scarce vintage Mego Apes, like the Andorian and Romulan
to drive sales up.
Now that the actual figures are arriving in stores, it
will be interesting to see retailer's attitudes towards
the line. DST has a good relationship with Fox so I
am hopeful.
I think that the answer is to mix Apes with humans or
mutants so that we can get the most playability in the
line.
Let me know what you think. <.html

.htmlJess,
With your sculpting talent you could. I once owned a store where I sold candy-making/cake decorating materials and I know that although it look hard, it's easier that you may think. The basic foundation of the cake is a sheet cake. The mouth is probably half of a ball cake. The rest is "fondant" with is a ply-able mixture of a powder and corn syrup which makes an edible-like clay. You'd have no problem molding it into the shapes needed. The black color is made first by adding brown food "paste" coloring to the fondant then once brown used "black" coloring to the brown. If you add the black paste coloring only it will only reach an ugly shade of gray.
It is also possible that they made it all in brown/chocolate then used an air brush with black coloring on the whole cake.
Years ago when people would come to my house to watch a movie I would make a cake in theme to what we were viewing. I made a Jurassic Park cake - a grassy rectangular cake with a jeep driving up to the Jurassic Park Gates (made of chocolate). For a showing of episodes of SPACE:1999 I made a lunar landscape with Moonbase Alpha made from white chocolate.
This Ursus cake is excellent but often they use so much fondant it is sickeningly sweet to eat. It's easier to achieve visually what is needed with fondant, but I always stuck to icing instead and molding my own chocolate over the fondant - also because I'm allergic to corn and therefore the corn syrup in fondant. Most everyone enjoys chocolate and icing so in the end the cake just tastes better.

Perhaps to make these easy to market you might consider packaged groups.
Mutant High Council, from BENEATH.(5)
Mutant leaders, from BATTLE (Kolp, Mendez, Alma)
Heroes & Villains Set from ESCAPE (Drs Lewis & Dickson/Hasslein)
Hero/Villain Set from CONQUEST (Armando & McDonnell/Gov. Breck
Ape Family - Caesar, Lisa, Cornelius - BATTLE
Ape Slaves from CONQUEST - One of each Ape
Just few ideas.

This reminds me, there's a "Matte Shots" page on the group site....
Well, thanks to the clarity of Blu-ray I've discovered there's yet
another matte shot. (Maybe in future James can do a screen capture of
it and add it to that page?) Anyway, it's the shot of the spaceship
sinking under the waters of the dead sea. I've never been able to
figure the shot out before, but now I can see that the model was shot
in the Fox "Sersen Tank" that was used in so many Fox things from
"Tora! Tora! Tora!" to "Batman" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea."
The water and the painted sky background are actual photographed stuff,
but the desert and buttes on either side are Emil Kosa matte paintings
optically combined later. What I could never tell before is if they
hadn't been painted against the actual rear tank wall, but now I can
see they're mattes.

Go to a place, like a craft store such as Michaels, or JoAnne's, or to Wilton online, the latter is a company I used to stock their entire line. They have food coloring "past", It's thicker and more concentrated. Remember, if you're trying to get back icing first make it chocolate the brown takes the black food past best. Be careful it's very strong. For the hair use a piping decorator's bag and use either a "grass" tip or a "basket" weave tip, it will give texture to the icing like hair. For the hieroglyph you can pipe it with buttercream, first the outline, then fill it in and use you finger, dipped in water, then smooth it out. Or, you can buy "melting" chocolate (Wilton sell it) and pour the melted chocolate into a plastic tray or zip-lock container (food safe) freeze it for about 5 - 6 mins., don't make to deep. Take it out of the freezer and turn it out and let it
sit at room temp for about
20mins. Then take a slightly heated knife and cut out what you need from the choc. You can also do Ganache glaze for a leather look on gorillas or Ursus/Urko helmet - it would taste great!

Sounds very cool, Scott. I'm going to have to try to make this one day. I really hate the taste of fondant. Butter icing is best...probably figure out a way to color that black...I do have a ball cake shell...two halves. But for the cake I'm going to make I will probably find something smaller...which I am sure I can find somewhere in my cupboards... The only item that would have to be in fondant is the hieroglyph. Everything else can be piped. I'll make one for my b-day, I think, if I am not consumed in costume-making for Halloween. I deserve it!! Jess.

With your sculpting talent you could. I once owned a store where I sold candy-making/ cake decorating materials and I know that although it look hard, it's easier that you may think.

It's being reported that Universal is
courting Glen Larson, producer of the original '70's series, to do a movie
version of "Battlestar Galactica" ( http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40192 ).
Of course there's been an acclaimed revamp series, which BG traditionalists
supposedly rejected. I know almost nothing about either series or BG fandom, but
apparently Universal is giving a nod to the old school fans by bringing in
Larson and bringing back characters like Adama for the movie.
The only thing this has to do with anything
is that many "Ape" fans seem upset by Fox's "Caesar" plans that stray once again
from the original movies. That just seems to be the way in Hollywood. Even this
new BG is described as a revamp but with a touch of the old. But it is a step in
the retro direction.
When I interviewed Brian (Apemania) Penikas
last weekend he said Fox does go to them for ideas of what the fans want in a
new movie. He said he told them we want the original characters we fell in love
with - - Cornelius, Zira, Zauis, etc. He said last summer they were considering
two ideas: a "prequel" to "Planet" and this "Caesar" idea. Though I've been as
open to the new "Caesar" revamp as anyone I think it would be cool if they could
do something in the original universe; maybe update it visually in some way but
keep the names and costumes, etc.
I think there's some resistance to doing a
straight "prequel" because there's too much baggage with the originals. Starting
over seems to be the safe choice. But they are starting to come out with
"hybrids" like "Superman Returns" and the new "Star Trek" where they take
certain elements from the originals and just go "bigger". Is that the way to go?
Or should they just let the originals rest in peace and start over
(again)?

.html It's interesting to note that BS was original planned as a way for SPACE:1999 to continue as a Network series. I remember discussing this with the NY attorney for ITC way back. It's seems that Space;1999 was sold in syndication and tied up. After its success the Networks decided to pick up the option with the original cast taking up the series in a new way after Series 2. It was going start up with the runaway moon on a collision course with a planet which was inhabited
and saw the moon coming in advance. The citizens of the planet made a giant space ark and approach the earth men of Moonbase Alpha to join them since both their planet and the moon would be destroyed from the collision. The ship ran on a jump drive that allowed it to jump from galaxy to galaxy and it was called The
Glactica. The idea fell through when members of the Space: 1999 cast went different ways (in the UK) and broke up the series. Later the idea was re-vamped and became what we know today. So, basically, BS is the bastard child of Space;1999

Leave the original alone in terms of trying to link both universes together.
Let each saga have it's own place, it's own world.
Much like Burton's POTA. It's own entity.

.htmlGreat post Jeff. I do have some thoughts.
First, regarding BSG it sounds like Universal is trying to squeeze some more money out of the franchise. From what I read the "new" Larson version won't be a continuation of the old series but yet another relaunch except this time in vein of the original. The question is will fans of the original truly accept this "new" version. Most seem to want a continuation of the old series with the original actors al a the early 'Star Trek' movies.
In regard to Apes, I've always felt that the original could be continued and up dated to current movie standards. A 'hybrid' as you put it. The FX, make-up and costumes could be updated while still retaining the general look of the originals. Imagine the original Ape City supplemented with CGI effects. Plus there are still centuries of ape history to tell from the original. I'm sure many, many great stories can be told from those centuries.
I do have to say that I'm a bit ambivalent to a prequel with Zaius, Cornelius and Zira "The Early Years" but I think the 'hybrid' approach is the way to go. It worked for Doctor Who and Superman. We'll see how it works for Star Trek. It seems to be the best way to bring in new fans while bringing back old fans as well.
--- In pota@yahoogroups.com, "Jeff K." <veetus@...> wrote: > > It's being reported that Universal is courting Glen Larson, producer of the original '70's series, to do a movie version of "Battlestar Galactica" ( http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40192 ). Of course there's been an acclaimed revamp series, which BG traditionalists supposedly rejected. I know almost nothing about either series or BG fandom, but apparently Universal is giving a nod to the old school fans by bringing in Larson and bringing back characters like Adama for the movie.
> The only thing this has to do with anything is that many "Ape" fans seem upset by Fox's "Caesar" plans that stray once again from the original movies. That just seems to be the way in Hollywood. Even this new BG is described as a revamp but with a touch of the old. But it is a step in the retro direction. > When I interviewed Brian (Apemania) Penikas last weekend he said Fox does go to them for ideas of what the fans want in a new movie. He said he told them we want the original characters we fell in love with - - Cornelius, Zira, Zauis, etc. He said last summer they were considering two ideas: a "prequel" to "Planet" and this "Caesar" idea. Though I've been as open to the new "Caesar" revamp as anyone I think it would be cool if they could do something in the original universe; maybe update it visually in some way but keep the names and costumes, etc.
> I think there's some resistance to doing a straight "prequel" because there's too much baggage with the originals. Starting over seems to be the safe choice. But they are starting to come out with "hybrids" like "Superman Returns" and the new "Star Trek" where they take certain elements from the originals and just go "bigger". Is that the way to go? Or should they just let the originals rest in peace and start over (again)? >

I'm not condemning "Caesar" but it just seems like a strange direction to go in. However, we should all remember that so far only the writing of a script has been approved. Whether that script goes forward is yet to be determined.

.htmlVery cool Tim!
And for those who had trouble with the link:
Tim Parati of North Carolina has invested thousands of dollars into his own POTA collection. Many of Parati's treasures, including the vinyl records Mollard seeks, are part of a bonus vignette, Impact of the Apes, that is featured on the Planet of the Apes 40th anniversary Blu-ray edition (November 2008).
"The people who were putting together the (Blu-ray) package heard about my stuff so they gave me a call," Parati says when reached at home in Charlotte. "The companies really went overboard back then, making all sorts of things that had nothing to do with the Apes movies." He lists things like belt buckles, bicycle flags, kites and slippers -- shaped like a chimp's paws -- as just some of the oddities he's tracked down through the years.
Parati's favourite Apes film is the initial one, based on Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel, La Planète des Singes. "It has the best message and it was the best-made one, too," he says. "Because of dwindling budgets, the films just got cheaper looking -- plus they didn't make any sense, timeline-wise. The directors were more or less making them up as they went along because they thought each one was going to be the last." (The next instalment, Caesar -- so-named for the ape who led the uprising against the humans in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes -- is rumoured to be hitting a multiplex near you in 2010.)
To view selections from Parati's collection, go to pota.goatley.com/collectibles.html" .

We've approved the proof for Amazon, which is slightly smaller than
the Lulu version and has shaded tabs along the outside edge, to make
it easier to locate individual sections. Amazon says it'll be about
two weeks before it's available for sale, which was a surprise to
us--we were led to believe it'd be available as as soon as we approved

Kevin,
I'll get the mold and cast going for Zira...I still have to fix her beard area, since the rotocast is not as detailed as the hair I added.
I'll let you know once it's painted up and I'll post a photo. If you're still interested, then you we can trade info off-group.

Kevin,
$20 for the cast
$30 to paint it up...
and probably $6 to mail it to you tracked via USPS priority mail...or I could use first class and save $3.

Sorry, what I meant was that it'd be interesting to see the entire
broadcast again today- commercials, bumpers and all. Heck, I'd probably even
watch the local news broadcast afterwards.

Actually, a couple of the photos from that article are
strange. I don't recall that particular scene of Brent choking
Nova, and the one where Ursus is staring right at the camera (when Zaius is
receiving a blessing from the Minister) is kind of strange considering
the fact that at one point the scene was (presumably) supposed to be in the
film.
Chris L.
>>That is so funny ! I have never noaticed that but probably because
the photo in the American lobby was taken just before or after
that....Zira' s hand is on Nova's chin. Bathrobe Guy is there but you can't
tell what it is! see attached Thanks for sharing that

Last night, Mark Lenard was one of those cruel general types who the IMF
team has to distract while they perpetrated a rescue. What was interesting about
his scenes was the fact that Paris (Leonard Nimoy) was the one doing the
distracting, so of course you had to make the Spock/Sarek connection. Plus both
shows were produced by Paramount. One has to wonder if when the director
said "Leonard", both men responded...
And for a complete stretch, Leigh Taylor-Young (Heston's love interest from
Soylent Green) was a regular in Mission: Impossible at the point in the series
when this episode aired.

You mean that you still have the actual "Empty Box" and advertisements that
came with it? I'd love to see a picture of everything- including the original
four figures- if you're able to do that.
BTW, what were the original four figures?
Chris L.

runaway success of Star Wars and no time to produce their now-famous figures in
time for the holidays, Kenner offered Star Wars fans an alternative: an Empty
Box that included no figures, but instead contained a mail-in certificate that
fans could redeem for four 3.75 Star Wars action figures by mail-- the very
first Star Wars figures ever made. " from ( http://www.rebelscum.com/SW05earlybirdkit.asp)

PS...I'm going to re-do the Sideshow Cornelius from both the first movie and Escape...since he looks so very different in both. And, you can never have too many apes. (At least I can never have too many).

I remember the debate between TOS and TNG, but I wasn't aware of fan of TOS
not accepting the movies. That's just plain stupid.
The only thing that's different about the example you gave was that
TNG was never supposed to be a continuation of the original series, whereas BSG
was at one point. I think that's where a lot of the problems started. Hell, even
if they had done BSG: TNG there wouldn't have been *as bad* of a old vs.
new debate. Setting it in the future would explain the difference in the gender
of the characters (they could be descendents), the Cylons (continually evolving
technology), even the subplot about the humans using the "retro" technology
so the Cylons couldn't control it. So a lot of the myopia would have been
avoided before it even started, and the story they wanted to tell- not to
mention the characters they wanted to tell it with- wouldn't have changed
one bit.
Chris L.
PS- as I HATED the original 'Lost in Space (sorry Bruce), I'm probably one
of the few who actually enjoyed the 1998 movie.
>>I think you are always going to have a divide between new fans and
old fans. I remember when Star Trek: The Next Generation started. There
were fans of the old show that refused to accept it. There were fans of
the original Star Trek series who never accepted the movies, even the
good ones. I know most fans of the original BSG wanted a straight
continuation but so do hardcore fans of the original Lost in Space. But in
the end that is just myopia. <<
I wrote:
>>I think the old vs. new BSG debate could go on for quite some time,
but since this is a POTA group I'll let this one rest before it goes on
too long. :-) However- just to clarify- I'm not saying that the new BSG is
a bad show, poorly written/acted/ directed or anything like that.
My problem with it is simply that it's not Battlestar Galactica. If you
want to tell a story, go for it. I maintain though that if this had
been called something else, it wouldn't have lost an iota of
respect/positive criticism that it's fan have for it. Nor would there have
been the split between the two fan groups, and in fact more of the old fans
might have been willing to give a new Sci-Fi series a look. Water under the
bridge now, but the next person thinking of dusting off an old series wanting
to update it might want to think of a better way to build a fan base
as opposed to doing something that divided it before the premiere
even aired. Another thing to remember is that if the original didn't
have such a diehard following and people writing to Universal requesting
something new year in and year out, you'd have to wonder if the new version
would have happened in the first place. I remember seeing Glen Larson on a
show called Sci-Fi Vortex back in 1996/97, and he had mentioned a
recent meeting at Universal where they told him about the high interest
in Battlestar Galactica. Originally Bryan Singer was going to do the
show for Fox, but delays forced him to drop out to direct X2, and only
then did they take a different direction. That certainly helped upset the
old fans who were under the impression that the original series was going
to be continued. It would have been like us being told that Fox was going
to do a sixth POTA film in the established storylines we all know, and
then getting the Burton film. Again, not talking about the quality of
the finished product, but rather the radical departure from the
original. A bit more info here: http://en.battlesta rwiki.org/ wiki/Bryan_ Singer <<<.html
