You should add hair and show us how it looks.
It was yucky weather here, too, but I was able to finish my green jacket for Zira (1:1 scale). yay!

Kevin,
I'll get the mold and cast going for Zira...I still have to fix her beard area, since the rotocast is not as detailed as the hair I added.
I'll let you know once it's painted up and I'll post a photo. If you're still interested, then you we can trade info off-group.

Kevin,
$20 for the cast
$30 to paint it up...
and probably $6 to mail it to you tracked via USPS priority mail...or I could use first class and save $3.

>Hey Rich,

Yep. I've done a couple of articles for Star Trek Magazine, and I
was a columnist/reporter for Star Trek Communicator magazine from the
mid-90s until it ceased publication a few years back. The
Communicator editor, Larry Nemecek, is planning to launch a Star
Trek-based blog site with the Roddenberry estate, and I'll be writing
for that project as well. In addition, I was slated to write a Trek
comic for DC/Wildstorm when they had the license, but a last-minute
budget cut curtailed that opportunity (damnit!). I've since lost the
two story outlines I created due to a computer crash, much to my
frustration. One was a spotlight on Mot the barber, and the other
was about Spock's involvement with the Romulan underground. (Okay,
I'll put my bio away now.)

Heh heh--yeah, that kind of sentiment can get you knifed in some
circles. As for me, I stopped watching it in season 4, when Seven of
Nine joined the show. After only a few episodes, I really disliked
what the Kes/Seven change said about the producers' belief regarding
what fans wanted from Star Trek. Since I was already very much not
enamored with the characters of Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, Kim,
B'elanna and Neelix, or the actors playing them, it wasn't difficult
to walk away. Kes, the Doctor and Tuvok were pretty much the only
characters that resonated with me, and even they weren't among Trek's
most interesting characters, so I figured I'd make a clean break when
I found myself looking at Seven's Patented Super Borg Boobs and
shaking my head.
It wasn't that I disliked Jeri Ryan, or her super boobs--I can
certainly appreciate both--it was just that even with someone who'd
been horribly mutilated into a monster, the producers STILL decided
to go for "drop-dead bombshell gorgeous" instead of daring to be
different and have an ugly or deformed female character in the
regular crew. And yet...
A few years ago, after selling off a large chunk of my collection and
having about a thousand dollars left after paying for a new bathroom
in my house, I decided to treat myself by picking up all 30 seasons
of Star Trek on DVD, something I never would have done otherwise, due
to the expense involved. With great reluctance, I rewatched
Voyager...and found, to my surprise, that I actually liked the
seasons with Seven MORE than the earlier ones, and she ended up
becoming my favorite character on the series. Jeri Ryan turned out
to be a much better actor than Mulgrew, Beltran and several others in
the cast, and Seven developed into more than just Borg Boobs. Who knew?
>I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the new film coming out?
>I'm looking forward to it, but I doubt there's going to be anything
>very different from what we've had in the past.
I have my fingers crossed for a great film--and I have a feeling it's
coming. I'm among the very few people in the world who thought
Insurrection was one of the best films in the series, and I think
Nemesis, despite some HUGE flaws and illogic problems (and a
completely wrong director choice) had potential.
But given the relative financial failure of those films, combined
with the negative rep Voyager has and the disappointing ratings and
early cancelation (not to mention truly horrid finale) that
Enterprise received, there's a LOT banking on this film. If it
tanks, that's pretty much the end of Trek for a while. But I'm
cautiously optimistic. I think Zachary Quinto is inspired casting,
and despite Chris Pine's eyebrows, he looks like he's going to work
out fine as well.
I'll admit I was a bit concerned with the "young hot people" casting
when I first saw who was in it, and I was particularly concerned
about Simon Pegg, who--despite being one of the best actors in the
cast--looks very little like Jimmy Doohan. I was also particularly
concerned about the time-travel/altered-universe motif (time travel
is probably the most overused plot in Star Trek), but the more I hear
about this story, and the more I see of it, the more excited about it
I've become. When the first full trailer was released, I found
myself grinning--especially with regard to Simon Pegg, who comes
across as very Scotty-like, much to my pleasant surprise. And McCoy,
I think, is going to be a hell of a lot of fun, too.
I'm not yet sold on poodle-curl Chekov...who, I notice, they've not
showcased at all in any of the trailers. And I think J.J. Abrams is
a great choice as director, but I find his "Star Trek should be more
like Star Wars" comments to be a bit redundant at times.
The fact that the film actually has Christopher Pike in it (something
I never imagined we'd see on screen), that Uhura's first name is
finally being officially set down on film as Nyota (until now, she's
been the only character without a canonized first name), that we're
meeting Kirk's parents for the first time, that Sarek and Amanda are
in it (and Ben Cross as Sarek--YES!), that Nimoy is in it, that
Doohn's son is in it, that Eric Bana is playing the villain...all of
this makes me think they're genuinely making an effort to make this a
good Star Trek movie in addition to it being a good movie--and both,
in my opinion, are important.

.html I finally sat down to watch the unrated version of Conquest (on the
blu-ray set) with the isolated score by Tom Scott. So much of Scott's
score went un-used that it is quite a revelation to see (or perhaps I
should say "hear") where music was supposed to play. I'm thankful that
Fox provided us with this isolated track, but I can't help but wish
that they had taken the next logical step and included a "rejected
mix" audio track. This "rejected mix" could have included all dialogue
plus as much of Scott's score as possible. It should be simple enough
to create such a thing. Perhaps a Tom Scott fan edit is needed. <.html

Yeah, that's actually when the show started getting better, with much
better scripts. I think the first season was the worst.
I really never got into DS9 much, though I watched every episode, but
with all the modern Star Treks, the episodes I like best are the ones
with the most latex, which I guess is the legacy of so being into POTA
as a kid. I also very much like the DS9's with James Darren, again
going back to my liking of something else when I was a kid.

Sounds very cool, Scott. I'm going to have to try to make this one day. I really hate the taste of fondant. Butter icing is best...probably figure out a way to color that black...I do have a ball cake shell...two halves. But for the cake I'm going to make I will probably find something smaller...which I am sure I can find somewhere in my cupboards... The only item that would have to be in fondant is the hieroglyph. Everything else can be piped. I'll make one for my b-day, I think, if I am not consumed in costume-making for Halloween.
I deserve it!! Jess.

Jess,
With your sculpting talent you could. I once owned a store where I sold candy-making/ cake decorating materials and I know that although it look hard, it's easier that you may think. The basic foundation of the cake is a sheet cake. The mouth is probably half of a ball cake. The rest is "fondant" with is a ply-able mixture of a powder and corn syrup which makes an edible-like clay. You'd have no problem molding it into the shapes needed. The black color is made first by adding brown food "paste" coloring to the fondant then once brown used "black" coloring to the brown. If you add the black paste coloring only it will only reach an ugly shade of gray.
It is also possible that they made it all in brown/chocolate then used an air brush with black coloring on the whole cake.
Years ago when people would come to my house to watch a movie I would make a cake in theme to what we were viewing. I made a Jurassic Park cake - a grassy rectangular cake with a jeep driving up to the Jurassic Park Gates (made of chocolate). For a showing of episodes of SPACE:1999 I made a lunar landscape with Moonbase Alpha made from white chocolate.
This Ursus cake is excellent but often they use so much fondant it is sickeningly sweet to eat. It's easier to achieve visually what is needed with fondant, but I always stuck to icing instead and molding my own chocolate over the fondant - also because I'm allergic to corn and therefore the corn syrup in fondant. Most everyone enjoys chocolate and icing so in the end the cake just tastes better.

Well back in the '80s there were some hardcore fans who didn't like the new uniforms or changes to the Enterprise or even the music. They wanted Star Trek back exactly as it had been done in the '60s.
> > >>I think the old vs. new BSG debate could go on for quite some time, but > since this is a POTA group I'll let this one rest before it goes on too > long. :-) However- just to clarify- I'm not saying that the new BSG > is a bad show, poorly written/acted/directed or anything like that. My > problem with it is simply that it's not Battlestar Galactica.
Well then you're getting into the question as to exactly what BSG is. Is it the concept or the execution? There are many concepts from Sherlock Holmes to Tarzan to Buck Rogers to Batman that have had various executions over the years. Fans of one particular execution may not like another verision of the same concept. (I know there are fans of the '60 Batman TV series who hate the recent movies.) But just because the recent execution of BSG is different from the '70s version doesn't mean it is not still BSG. If BSG had been done in the '60s rather than in the '70s, after Star Wars, the execution might have looked entirely different.
In the past there have been several dicussions here about what is POTA. (Is it just talking apes? If so then Lancalot Link is a version of POTA.) For most it is usually whatever version of POTA that first made them a fan. For some it is the movies, or even the first movie. For some it is the TV show or comics. I'm sure there are even some for which it is the novel who think the movie it not POTA.
> > Another thing to remember is that if the original didn't have such a > diehard following and people writing to Universal requesting something > new year in and year out, you'd have to wonder if the new version would > have happened in the first place.
The thing is Universal did not hire Ron Moore to revive BSG. He went to them because he was a fan of the original and had a vision to bring it back. Most likely any revival of the concept would have died after the Singer version was abandoned if it hadn't been for Moore.
I think this was the main problem with Burton's POTA. For years FOX had been trying to revive the franchise. Tim Burton was just a hired gun, not someone who was a fan and really wanted to do it. That's what POTA needs. Someone who is a fan of the original and has a vision for its revival.

Maybe a Predator was responsible for the loss of some of Ursus'

Predator's ship self-destructing?

Cast = $20
Paint = $30
shipping = $6 or $3 (depending on how you want him to get to you via USPS). Overseas folks, just $6 for first class air mail.
If you want to wait and buy several heads to save on shipping costs, let me know. So far in 1:6 scale, I only have Carsia and Dr. Milo available. I am slowly trying to make molds and casts of the other sculpts I have. I think I have 18 so far but four of them I am still tweaking.

Strange today I've heard POTA referred to twice! On NPR a movie critic mentioned it in his report about New Yorker
Films demise and just now a character on "ER" was coming out of a vacuum tube and he said "it's like one of those things in Planet of the Apes...the original one." (talking about the ship beds)
Not to mention many Google alerts mentioning it unfortunately in reference to the chimp killed last week and the New York Post cartoon....

Trek. Everyone, their brothers, and their second cousins were doing
quickie albums of TV themes back in the seventies, but this is the first time

Okay, it's not 3978 but it's much easier to swallow.
Speaking of which... in that same treatment Brent's ship lands INTACT

Again, that would have made the whole Milo/ship thing make more sense.
Maybe Dehn was paying more attention than we give him credit for?

Actually, I'm convinced that the main reason BENEATH is such a mess is
that Mort Abrahams monkeying around with it too much.
You want to blame anyone for BENEATH, blame Mort. Is it only

.html I need to do some revising of my impressions of the audio on the
Blu-ray DVD for PLANET. Up until a few days ago I'd been listening to
it in surround, but from a processor that was made before the
introduction of DTS HD. So, even though the processor could decode
DTS, I wasn't sure it was doing what it should, especially since I was
hearing a soundtrack for PLANET that was basically mono. This wasn't
the case with the sequel Blu-rays.
But I recently bought a new Panasonic plasma TV and it must have the
circuitry to properly decode DTS HD from Blu-ray, because hooked up
through the HDMI cable from the Blu-ray disc player, I'm hearing great
stereo sound from PLANET -- and this is just from the speakers on the
plasma.
I realize now that I'm going to have to get a new A/V receiver that has
the DTS and Dolby Digital True HD logos on it to listen to these discs
properly, however they sound so great just through my plasma I'm not in
any rush to spend more money.
Alex, I'm wondering now if your audio equipment is made to properly
decode DTS and DD True HD Master Audio? Because you also thought the
stereo surround on PLANET wasn't as good as that for the sequel Blu-ray
discs. What the story is with the sequel discs I don't know.

Which brings up the question why was it changed to 3955 in the later versions of the script. Someone had to change it for a reason.
> > Speaking of which... in that same treatment Brent's ship lands INTACT > allowing him the possibility to escape at the climax (which he doesn't > take).

I have always felt that Taylor's ship had the capability of being relaunched. When it sinks he says "OK We're here to stay" which infers that if the ship had not sunk they would have the option of leaving.
> > Maybe Dehn was paying more attention than we give him credit for? > > Dave >
I've always felt that Dehn has not gotten enough credit or respect from fans. Sure there are discrepencies but there are in all series. But back then they didn't have people assigned to check continuity like they do today. And even with those people there are still big discrepencies in franchised like Star Wars and Star Trek. And remember Dehn was writing each film as if it would be the last in an age before home video. I don't think he envisioned fans being able to run the films back over and over again checking over every detail.
I also think Dehn suffers in comparison to Serling & Wilson. The screenplay for Planet is a masterpiece. But it took them years of revisions to get to that while Dehn had to churn out his screenplays fairly quickly for each sequel.

Humans were looking more ape-like and apes with mutant telepathic abilities. This would have created both a unity and higher reason for both living together - becoming one race. One that could destroy each other with thought forcing both to live together.
It would have been very ironic that both species would evolve into one initiated by mutation via the bombs that destroyed the world.
After all, it's pure sci-fi.

Which brings up the question why was it changed to 3955 in the later versions of the script. Someone had to change it for a reason.

I have always felt that Taylor's ship had the capability of being relaunched. When it sinks he says "OK We're here to stay" which infers that if the ship had not sunk they would have the option of leaving.

But it took them years of revisions to get to that while Dehn had to churn out his screenplays fairly quickly for each sequel. |

.htmlThe script for 'Planet of the Apes Revisted' (Dehn's first draft which is on Hunter's site: https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_revisited_first_01.pdf) is far superior to the final shooting script. From every account that I've read about the filming of Beneath, Mort Abrahams was the problem. I think it was Ted Post who said that Mort had some of the worst most hackneyed ideas he had ever heard.

.htmlRory,
The sound for PLANET sucks. It's botched, plain and simple. I have a new decoder, and Integra and it sound terrible. FOX screwed up and used the wrong mix on the English soundtrack. Just listen to the French in 5.1. The mix is completely different, and better. There is more steering amongst the front 3 channels, and even surround. There is no surround to speak of in the English mix. It's terrible. The French mix is more akin to sound the way it was mix in the 60's. The original 4-track mix of PLANET was long lost by FOX. The new 5.1 is re-worked mono. No company would actually go back to the original stems of separate dialog, music and sound effects and make such a boring 5.1 mix. FOX must have simply put it through a "box" that spread out the soundtrack - which is why it is terrible. This has become a common practice among the studios as with UNIVERSAL with XANADU,
FLASH GORDON and even PARAMOUNT with STAR TREK II AND III. There's a nasty frame of mind that is about causing original Dolby Surround (2.0) mixes are good enough so they are pumping the sound into a fake spreader that confirms it to 5.1, but in a fake way.
What you are hearing is better than 5.1 because it's negated to only 2 channels. Just listen to the French and you'll hear a bigger difference. I don't know why FOX just didn't overlay the music and effect track from the French mix to the English one - unless someone just screwed up. ...which wouldn't surprise me.

I need to do some revising of my impressions of the audio on the Blu-ray DVD for PLANET. Up until a few days ago I'd been listening to it in surround, but from a processor that was made before the introduction of DTS HD. So, even though the processor could decode DTS, I wasn't sure it was doing what it should, especially since I was hearing a soundtrack for PLANET that was basically mono. This wasn't the case with the sequel Blu-rays.
But I recently bought a new Panasonic plasma TV and it must have the circuitry to properly decode DTS HD from Blu-ray, because hooked up through the HDMI cable from the Blu-ray disc player, I'm hearing great stereo sound from PLANET -- and this is just from the speakers on the plasma.
I realize now that I'm going to have to get a new A/V receiver that has the DTS and Dolby Digital True HD logos on it to listen to these discs properly, however they sound so
great just through my plasma I'm not in any rush to spend more money.
Alex, I'm wondering now if your audio equipment is made to properly decode DTS and DD True HD Master Audio? Because you also thought the stereo surround on PLANET wasn't as good as that for the sequel Blu-ray discs. What the story is with the sequel discs I don't know.

.htmlTreatments and early versions of some of the scripts are on Hunter's site: https://pota.goatley.com/scripts.html". Very interesting to read how the some of the ideas for the films started out.
I believe the half ape/half human child was for the Beneath's original ending which took place about 100 years after the events of the rest of the films. And since all the mutants were killed I don't think the child was supposed to have telepathic powers, so I would tend to think the whole Caeser thing is unrelated.
One interesting thing about the first draft of Beneath's script is that there a little more background to Brent's character such as his full name being John Christopher Brent. And that he was orphaned as a child to be raised by his maternal Grandmother.
It also says that he grew-up in New York City. That gives more resonance to his statement in the subway station, "This use to be my home. I lived here, worked here". So he is not making some general statement about Earth, he is literally talking about New York.

That was probably just a cue from the script, however whoever set up
the archive section could have decided on Reel-to Reel because they don't
take up as much space as a U-matic tape.
And isn't the cassette in Conquest a microcassette that has video images?
Seems to me that would have been seen as futuristic as that technology wasn't
available back in 1972. Of course, REVOLUTION retconned the whole thing and
worked the internet and cells phones into the story. That always bothered me,
because neither were widely available back in 1991.

>>One thing that always bothered me about Battle is that they used
reel to reel tapes instead of U-matic. Even in Conquest they are using
cassette tapes. Seems like a backward step in technology.

One thing I neglected to mention when I was writing my lengthy posts about
the Thanksgiving weekend marathon (and the CONQUEST director's cut in
particular) was that I loved how Breck didn't cower at the end when he was
staring up at the gorillas with their rifles upraised. His facial expression
said "Go ahead. Do it.". Almost challenging them in a way to go through with
it.
A true antagonist, right until the end.
