.html.html I never had a problem with DTS suround sound on any bluray movie (through my suround sound receiver system).
Planet's audio just wasn't done right in my opinion. Although I've never heard it through my Sony LCD TV before.
Maybe it'll sound better through there.
But bottom line, if Beneath sounds great and Planet doesn't, then no doubt it's the bluray movie and not the suround sound receiver system.

I need to do some revising of my impressions of the audio on the Blu-ray DVD for PLANET. Up until a few days ago I'd been listening to it in surround, but from a processor that was made before the introduction of DTS HD. So, even though the processor could decode DTS, I wasn't sure it was doing what it should, especially since I was hearing a soundtrack for PLANET that was basically mono. This wasn't the case with the sequel Blu-rays.
But I recently bought a new Panasonic plasma TV and it must have the circuitry to properly decode DTS HD from Blu-ray, because hooked up through the HDMI cable from the Blu-ray disc player, I'm hearing great stereo sound from PLANET -- and this is just from the speakers on the plasma.
I realize now that I'm going to have to get a new A/V receiver that has the DTS and Dolby Digital True HD logos on it to listen to these discs properly, however they sound so
great just through my plasma I'm not in any rush to spend more money.
Alex, I'm wondering now if your audio equipment is made to properly decode DTS and DD True HD Master Audio? Because you also thought the stereo surround on PLANET wasn't as good as that for the sequel Blu-ray discs. What the story is with the sequel discs I don't know.

.htmlOK, well, as I said, I don't currently have a 5.1 setup that I know is
properly decoding the DTS HD Master Audio, so I'll have to take your
word that it sucks, but what I was listening to this afternoon didn't
sound too bad to me -- but again it was only two channel stereo (with
those "virtual surround" processing settings added).
I agree that the Dolby Digital 5.1 that's on the 35th Anniversary DVD
was OK but could have been improved. The way Fox used to do their
4-track stereo surrounds in the '50s and '60s was that you had three
front channels (Left, Center, Right) and a mono surround channel. The
front channel "sound stage" was very dynamic in that they would "pot
pan" the sound effects and dialogue -- that being that if an object
creating noise, such as a horse drawn wagon, or a person talking, moved
across the screen from left to right, the sound effect or dialogue
would also move in the same direction. You can hear this on many Fox
DVDs of old Cinemascope and Panavision movies where the original 4 or
6-track masters have survived. You'll also notice on most of those old
soundtracks that except for the music, the surround tracks were used
VERY sparingly, not at all like the aggressive mixes we have today --
which aren't always a good thing.
One thing that bugged me about the stereo surround remix that Fox did
for the 35th Anniversary DVD was that they didn't "pot pan"
the
dialogue. I was hoping this would be rectified with the Blu-ray, but I
guess not. I was also hoping some of the sound effects -- such as the
wind you hear in the scene where the escape party met up with Cornelius
at the cornfield -- would be put into the rear surrounds too, and that
Goldsmith's score would be given more surround presence in the rears as
well (such as you get when you listen to the CD in stereo surround),
but I guess not. Why Fox doesn't do what it should is probably a
matter of them simply not waiting to go to the expense.
By the way, you don't have to listen to the French 5.1 on the Blu-ray
to hear what we're talking about, just go back and listen to the
English tracks of the 35th Anniversary edition audio.

Rory,
The sound for PLANET sucks. It's botched, plain and simple. I have a
new decoder, and Integra and it sound terrible. FOX screwed up and
used the wrong mix on the English soundtrack. Just listen to the
French in 5.1. The mix is completely different, and better. There is
more steering amongst the front 3 channels, and even surround. There
is no surround to speak of in the English mix. It's terrible. The
French mix
is more akin to sound the way it was mix in the 60's. The
original 4-track mix of PLANET was long lost by FOX. The new 5.1 is
re-worked mono. No company would actually go back to the original
stems of separate dialog, music and sound effects and make such a
boring 5.1 mix. FOX must have simply put it through a "box" that
spread out the soundtrack - which is why it is terrible. This has
become a common practice among the studios as with UNIVERSAL with
XANADU,
FLASH GORDON and even PARAMOUNT with STAR TREK II AND III. There's a
nasty frame of mind that is about causing original Dolby Surround (2.0)
mixes are good enough so they are pumping the sound into a fake
spreader that confirms it to 5.1, but in a fake way.
What you are hearing is better than 5.1 because it's negated to only 2
channels. Just listen to the French and you'll hear a bigger
difference. I don't know why FOX just didn't overlay the music and
effect track from the French mix to the English one - unless someone
just screwed up. ...which wouldn't surprise me.

I need to do some revising of my impressions of the audio on the
Blu-ray DVD for PLANET. Up unti
l a few days ago I'd been listening to
it in surround, but from a processor that was made before the
introduction of DTS HD. So, even though the processor could decode
DTS, I wasn't sure it was doing what it should, especially since I was
hearing a soundtrack for PLANET that was basically mono. This wasn't
the case with the sequel Blu-rays.
But I recently bought a new Panasonic plasma TV and it must have the
circuitry to properly decode DTS HD from Blu-ray, because hooked up
through the HDMI cable from the Blu-ray disc player, I'm hearing great
stereo sound from PLANET -- and this is just from the speakers on the
plasma.
I realize now that I'm going to have to get a new A/V receiver that has
the DTS and Dolby Digital True HD logos on it to listen to these discs
properly, however they sound so
great just through my plasma I'm not in
any rush to spend more money.
Alex, I'm wondering now if your audio equipment is made to properly
decode DTS and DD True HD Master Audio? Because you also thought the
stereo surround on PLANET wasn't as good as that for the sequel Blu-ray
discs. What the story is with the sequel discs I don't know.

I didn't take that very many photos, but a lot of photos were taken of me. It took 3 hours to glue everything down, two hours to remove almost everything. Went to bed exhausted at 1:30 AM. Have a cold now, and a b-day party later for my son. I'm sooo tired. I was a bit rushed puttingon the makeup/hair because I slept through my alarm. I got an honorable mention at the costume contest, though!

On the other hand some of Dehn's ideas border on amateurish
like a fan fic. For example the idea that Ursus would use a
talking human as a spy, let alone that Zira would consider
that as a possibility. I realize it's an early draft, but the
dialogue is pretty weak. I'm not a huge Beneath fan,
though I think there were some good ideas there. I
for one am glad some of this stuff didn't make the
final cut. I wish we could see the rest of it though.

When you think that it's an optical system and

used on magnetic tape would come off from
the film going though the sprockets, so a

Actually the audio for the films from the early fifties on was recorded
on magnetic tape, I believe 35mm magnetic tape, as were the scores.
When a movie was released in 4 or 6-track audio it was also very narrow
magnetic tape strips glued to the film. Now, mono films had optical
tracks, yes.

.htmlStill suffering from the effects of Wondercon. I've succumbed to the cold my kids have been harboring the week before. If I had a cold I would not have been able to wear the appliance. My great downfall to the costume was rushing the makeup. The hair came out like crap. I should have used a photo for reference, which would have given me a better hairline. I hate that!!! I used the outline of the appliance for a guide, but now I know better. Next time I will do better. Live and learn, I suppose.
Next time I'll go by myself so that I get there when I'm good and ready, not try to meet a deadline. I'm definitely going back next year, hopefully with a better sleeve material that I will re-weave as soon as I find the right yarn. And I won't have to worry about entering the contest. I just entered for the hell of it, not really expecting anything..but a lot of people kept telling me I should win and that I had the best makeup on. I beg to differ. My hair just sucked!!
I didn't really sweat that much even with all the bodies there. It was warm, but I wasn't sweating profusely. I should have had more water to drink...I just did not want to travel with much, and whatever I dragged around all day gave me such a shoulder ache! Two bottles of 16oz shakes which were my food for the day...I drank the last one when I first sat down and never wanted to get up. I wasn't hungry but I was tired of dragging it around. So I lightened my load a bit by drinking it. I didn't want to get up anymore, but a lot of people still came up for photos. I couldn't really do anything without people photographing me.
I avoided eating because I did not want to have to touch up my teeth in case I accidentally "missed" while making a correction. I just didn't trust myself because even when looking in a mirror I still "missed" the straw. When I took a drink, I made sure to go in slow motion and went with memory to aim well. I was also a bit devastated to find out I didn't bring any extra straws, especially when I was so thirsty back stage. So...I went for it and took a sip from a cup and I was ok. I was surprised I was able to do it. I was just going to skip drinking anything.
I glued ears on, too, and that made it super difficult to hear the voice on the other end of the cell phone. I could barely talk on the phone, having so much difficulty hearing my conversation of exactly where my girlfriend was (we got separated)...and the din of the crowd...and everyone kept asking for photos.
I could have killed my girlfriend, too...she was helping me glue down bits of my hair...bloody cell phone made it more messed up...and she spilled glue down the front of my green outfit. I told her not to worry--it would dry clear. It did but there's a LONG accident of dried up glue all the way down the front. The family with a baby next to us did not have any baby wipes. What the hell? You come to a convention with a baby and no baby wipes? Grrr....Luckily we were near a curtain and I used that to wipe off whatever glue I could. The bathroom was MILES away!!! There's a long dark stain now...but I can easily replace that panel. My heart just sank because I had asked for the judges to review the craftsmanship of the costume beforehand.
Don Pedro Colley was the most huggable sweety pie. He was very very loveable and very friendly. He said he remembers the apes very well. He was telling my girlfriend that he could feel me shaking when I gave him a hug. I was so excited I could have cried...but made myself stop because how the heck was I going to blow my nose? We did not talk much about the movie...we talked about the economy and also what other celebrities charged for photos or autographs. In retrospect I should have asked him about the makeup process he had to undergo, what he remembered the most from being in the movie. Grrr...I did not expect him to be there either.
There were a lot of makeup people there, they introduced themselves to me as such when they came up almost to my eyeballs looking for where my skin ended and began. They were really in my face!! I think there were three or four who came in for close inspection. I passed. And luckily, nobody came up to poke my face. It was a zoo, definitely.

Just the fact that the Movietone system was perfected in 1925
and that any modern theater can still play any film from that
era without any modification blows me away. Just the fact
that it's lasted this long shows what a good system it was.
Promoting it was one of the things Fox actually got right.

.htmlI made up at my house, which is only 25 minutes away from San Francisco. I have decided I'm going to make my own wig and rework my costume. My hair was so fussy at the show. Yes, definitely next time I will use a photo reference for the hairline. The foam latex glued on the face was not hot at all. It was very comfortable and lightweight. I did get a lot of double takes. It takes a lot of grit you are right, but it's so fun. I loved it all. This was the first time ever for me being under the goo, but definitely not the last. Looking forward to the next ape outing.
As far as the costume goes, I need to move the shoulder seams up and shorten the sleeves, and reweave the inner sleeves with a finer yarn. I have to lower the edge of the collar so that you can see the darts, too.

Those Star Wars guys can take their

you don't see a lot of full makeups
at Cons. Takes a lot if grit to do it.

I got an honorable mention at the costume contest, though!
I met Don Pedro Colley. He was such a nice person. I gave him a big hug and didn't want to let go. He was as soft as a big fluffy pillow.

The costume has those darts. You can't tell because of the lighting, and the fabric is very dark. It has to have those darts for the collar to lay properly. It's got the same number as on the pictures.
My skin feels ok. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The costume was not claustrophobic. Next time I will buy those tatoo inks so I don't have to rework my hands. My hands still have grease paint in the creases...I've tried everything to remove them. It doesn't bother me--they just look dirty. No wonder Apemania people wear gloves. Removing grease makeup is tough.

If you're having to rework the costume because of the glue
I would put some more, not really sure of the sewing term,
but I think they're called darts, in the collar. See below.

"evolved" to the point where they talk, wear clothes and walk upright.
....
Shakesville - http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/
Is this article kidding, or what? POTA a conservative movie? Some
people are spinning in their graves right now.
And conservatives don't believe that evolution is a fact -- at this
point in history?!!!! Forget apes, these nuts are neanderthals!

Jackie Earle Hailey, "Kraik" in the POTA TV
show, is on a roll. He got an Oscar nomination for "Little Children", he's a
major player in this weekend's "Watchmen" and now he's got a pilot on, ahem,
Fox. These days, when actors like Robert Downey, Jr. and Mickey Rourke are
being lauded for (terrific) comebacks, it's good to see someone who didn't
implode but just fell out of favor coming back. Hey, Jackie was the star of a
movie in which Tom Cruise was just a wannabe. He was also memorable in stuff
like "Bad News Bears" and "Breaking Away". Good job, Jackie!

this is your mask your selling?if so im just giving my opinion w/out seeing
it in person.but it resembles the copy i have. i also have a latex one that was
supposedly poured from original mold,it is dry and dark colored from age. but im
almost sure all the movie mutant pieces were silicone. to verify i would
contact brian at apemania if he knows of any latex pulls.ive seen 3 different
collectors pieces and all are silicone.
im not trying to start any problems or hurt you ,i wish you luck
with selling it.if i thought it was real i would be bidding myself.i dont own a
original mutant and im dying for one.
do you have better pix or of inside of mask?

.html I'm totally speaking out of turn here (I know NOTHING about the
collectability of original props), but couldn't the mutant mask that's
currently for sale have simply been one of the "less detailed" ones
created for the crowd scenes?
I mean, we know that the quality of the makeup for the ape extras in all
of the movies dropped dramatically the further you got from the camera
(just look at some of those chimps throwing fruit at Heston in the first
movie; horrible!). Why wouldn't it have been true for the mutants as
well? That is, the masks worn by Natalie Trundy and Victor Buono, etc.,
were all heavily-detailed silicone masks, but what about that guy
sitting in the very back row during the Mass? Surely they didn't bother
to make HIM a super-cool silicone mask, and therefore that's where the
cheaper latex versions were used.
Just a thought.

The custom made life-mask is still in the works but it's in the backburner. When the other half of the makeup crew is better, we'll walk that journey again.

.html I saw the film last night, and as someone who loves the comic miniseries, I thought it was fantastic. The ending was different, as a lot of people have discussed, but I actually think it worked better on film and made more sense based on what Alan Moore had set up regarding the characters of Ozymandias and Manhattan.
Haley was AMAZING as Rorschach--he absolutely nailed every nuance of the character as Moore wrote him, without fail. Honestly, I think he was the casting coup of the year--right up there with Ledger as the Joker, or Quinto as Spock, or...well...the entire cast of Lord of the Rings.
What's more, I disagree with most of the criticism I've seen online reviewers make concerning Laurie and Veidt--I thought both actors were a lot of fun in their respective roles, and very much captured their essences. The disadvantage they faced was that they were in the same film as the actors playing Rorschach, Manhattan and Dreiberg (who were all fantastic), so they were outmatched--but those characters have always been the more interesting ones to begin with, and so those actors had the upper hand since they had better material to work with.
I'd give this film an A+, right across the board, with one caveat: I think that in order to fully appreciate some aspects of this film, you pretty much have to have read the miniseries. A recent "motion-comic" DVD of The Watchmen, word for word and panel for panel from the miniseries, clocks in at almost six hours, whereas the film is half that. As such, some things, by necessity, had to be cut. For the most part, I think Snyder's cuts were smart ones--however, the one person in my group who hadn't read the comics was confused about a number of aspects, whereas the rest of us were all blown away, as we were able to follow it just fine, based on what we knew from reading it.
For fans familiar with the comics, it's easy to fill in the blanks because what they did include, they handled extremely well (except for Nixon's nose, which looked ridiculous). I have a feeling that the DVD version, which is going to be substantially longer--a la the Lord of the Rings Special Edition DVDs--is going to be even better, and a lot more approachable for those who didn't read the comics.
I urge everyone to go see this film--but to also read the comics, so that you can fully appreciate the brilliance that is Alan Moore. This is easily the most faithful adaptation of any comic book to the big screen, with panels and entire pages throughout the book recreated faithfully onscreen--including billboards, signs, graffiti, storefronts, you name it. And right across the board, every actor nailed their role. Simply amazing--I can't wait to see the extended version on DVD. <.html

.html Not going to go into a long review here, but to paint in broad strokes
I'd have to say that although it was a faithful adaptation, it was also
pretty lifeless. The action scenes were well done, but all the character
stuff just fell flat. I am glad to say though that contrary to my earlier
concerns, most of the casting worked except for Silk Spectre II (who was
very one dimensional) and Ozymandias (who was just to young looking for
the part).
Most of you have undoubtedly read that there's a significant change at
the ending, and this significantly detracts from the story and really
doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering what Ozymandias was trying
to accomplish. In fact, if anything it'd already heighten the political
tensions he was trying to relieve. Also, there's a bit tacked on after
the final conversation between Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach that's SO
heavy handed it ruins what just proceeded it. In fact, everything that
happened in Antarctica after the "event" was significantly changed from
the comic, and not for the better. Other changes to the comic script-
like having Lee Iacocca shot right between the eyes when the assassin was
gunning for Veidt- was a little too clever for it's own good.
I'm glad I saw it, and I don't feel it was a waste of my time. But I do
feel the criticisms that have been made about it are justified- $56
million dollar opening weekend or no.

As there were no rare Apes figures in the original line, I'd say the best
thing to do would be to introduce characters from other films to expand the
line's playability like you said. I mean, we have General Ursus from BENEATH
(who I still feel is the figure with the helmet, but I digress) but no
one else. If Mego kept with their waves of five, it should have been Ursus,
Nova, Brent, underground Taylor, and Zaius with his different outfit. They could
have even done the Mutant Council as the third set.
Any thoughts to reproducing the playsets/accessories?
Chris L.
>>Hello Ape fans - I come in peace.
Last year I reproduced the
four original Planet of the Apes Megos for Diamond Select Toys. The plan was
to mix up new and vintage figures, but Fox did not allow DST to make
any figures outside of the first film. Sales to retailers last year
were not great but there were no scarce vintage Mego Apes, like the Andorian
and Romulan to drive sales up. Now that the actual figures are
arriving in stores, it will be interesting to see retailer's attitudes
towards the line. DST has a good relationship with Fox so I am
hopeful. I think that the answer is to mix Apes with humans or mutants
so that we can get the most playability in the line. Let me know what
you think. <<<.html

.html From BBC News
Zoo chimp 'planned' stone attacks
A male chimpanzee in a Swedish zoo planned hundreds of stone-throwing attacks on zoo visitors, according to researchers.
Keepers at Furuvik Zoo found that the chimp collected and stored stones that he would later use as missiles.
Further, the chimp learned to recognise how and when parts of his concrete enclosure could be pulled apart to fashion further projectiles.
The findings are reported in the journal Current Biology.
There has been scant evidence in previous research that animals can plan for future events.
Crucial to the current study is the fact that Santino, a chimpanzee at the zoo in the city north of Stockholm, collected the stones in a calm state, prior to the zoo opening in the morning.
The launching of the stones occurred hours later - during dominance displays to zoo visitors - with Santino in an "agitated" state.
This suggests that Santino was anticipating a future mental state - an ability that has been difficult to definitively prove in animals, according to Mathias Osvath, a cognitive scientist from Lund University in Sweden and author of the new research.
"We've done experimental studies, and the chimps in my mind show very clearly that they do plan for future needs, but it has been argued that perhaps this was an experimental artefact," Dr Osvath told BBC News.
"Now we have this spontaneous behaviour, which is always in some sense better evidence."
Dr Osvath embarked on the study after zoo staff discovered caches of stones in the section of the enclosure facing the public viewing area.
Since the initial discovery in 1997, hundreds of the caches have been removed to protect visitors, to whom the caching and the aggressive displays seem strictly related; in the off season, Santino neither hoards the projectiles nor hurls them.
Most interestingly, Santino seems to have learned how to spot weak parts of the concrete "boulders" in the centre of the enclosure.
When water seeps into cracks in the concrete and freezes, portions become detached that make a hollow sound when tapped.
Santino was observed gently knocking on the "boulders", hitting harder to detach bits that were loosened and adding those to his stashes of ammunition.
There are a number of examples of complex behaviour in apes that suggest forms of consciousness.
Planning behaviour like that of the current work is connected to so-called autonoetic consciousness, where information due to memory can be distinguished from that from the senses.
"I'm personally convinced that at least chimps do plan for future needs, that they do have this autonoetic consciousness," Dr Osvath said.
"I hope that other zoos or those in the wild will look more closely at what is happening," he added.
"I bet there must be a lot of these kinds of behaviours out there, and I wouldn't be surprised if we find them in dolphins or other species." <.html
