.htmlHack. He's just building on something that already there. He wants us to feel for the chimp. Well, anyone with half a heart watching an animal being mis-treated for an hour and a half will - that easy. My God, people still weep over Bambi's mom and she's knocked off sooner.
The movie ANIMAL FARM, based on the Orwell book covers the same ground and did it extremely well especially for cable.
This is a half ass attempt to cash-in on the APES. FOX is going to screw it up yet again. Instead of just making a chapter withing what is accepted and loved they trying another "re-working" The man (Scott) has come right out and said it's NOT a re-make, it's NOT about talking apes. Plain and simple, it doesn't fit into what is accepted as the APE canon. It' a rip-off. It's PROJECT X mixed with the "element of CONQUEST.
RIP-OFF!!!

.htmlA few months ago I attended an SF convention in Montreal where I
picked up an Icarus lapel pin for $10. The dealer specialized in
Science Fiction related pins. I asked the guy if he had a website
where I could direct other interested POTA fans. He did but the Icarus
was not one of the pins listed on the site.
It's taken me a number of months to track down the guy to see if he
was still selling the pins. He no longer maintains the site, but
provided me with the information on how to order the pins and gave me
request forms and images of the pin to pass on.
I've put these online here: http://web.ncf.ca/ev001/icarus/Icarus.html"
Most of the required information is in the ads already, but if you
have any questions please direct them to him
( twowackypinguys@...), and not me. Just to be clear, I'm only
relaying the information, and I am not involved in any way with the
seller other than passing on the what I think may interest some people
here. The price and handling charges are not set by me.
Keep in mind the fact that it's all in Canadian dollars, so for US
buyers, it's cheaper (with the current currency valuations). I figure
paying with the cheaper Paypal option will ring in at just over $10 US.

Anybody want to go ape with me? It's closer than the San Francisco Wondercon in February 2010!!
My sister says she will take me. My husband says I am not allowed to spend the night, but my sister promises to drive me down there so I won't risk the chance of getting pulled over by a cop when in full costume. We'll have a girl's day out that day...and go out to a wonderful restaurant for dinner before heading home and make a big scene somewhere crowded.

As i'd joined this group nearly 2 years ago & had just came across this notice, i must say that this had gathered my interests, since i do also work as an artist/ cartoonist & illustrator , adding to the fact that i had been a Life-long fan of the APES phenomenom from childhood.
Looking forward in hearing from you & more details of this possible ongoing APES strip.

.htmlHey Terry,
I remember working on the strip with you, Dan and Glen. It was a shame that Dan's health forced him to pull out. Thankfully he recovered. It is also a shame that Neil is unable to complete the strip, he's the best POTA artist I've ever seen. And if I remember correctly, you came up with a really great story for the strip. I hope that you can find a good artist to complete it.

Happy Friday everyone! This week there are two very exciting new features to tell you all about.
First is the premiere of our new weekly feature APE CITY CHRONICLES, the first 75 years of Ape City's history as written by Virgil.
This totally original work tells the events from the end of Conquest, through Battle and beyond. Thanks again to Glen Scheetz, Dave Ballard and Chris Lawless for their contributions and advice (and proofing skills).
We hope everyone enjoys APE CITY CHRONICLES as much as our past weekly features.
To access click on the banner on the Yahoo Home page or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/ACC.htm
The second new feature is an addition to the Group Website's Videos section that has been literally 38 years in the making.
The shooting script for Escape begins with Taylor's ship being re-launched, the Ape-o-nauts witnessing Earth's destruction from orbit and then splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. Although the scenes inside the ship were filmed with Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter and Sal Mineo wearing spacesuits and helmets, they were scrapped and the film begins after the ship had already splashed down.
Using rare stills, stock footage and the talents of the wonderful people at BrokenSea, the opening sequence has been reconstructed as it might have appeared in the film and is now available in the Videos section for viewing.
Thanks to Mark Kalita, Jack Ward, Natasha Lathrop, Dave Sobkowiak & Glen Scheetz of BrokenSea for lending their vocal talents. Also thank you to Bill Hollweg,Tim Parati, Dave Ballard, Greg Plonowski, Hunter Goatley and Glen for their contributions and guidance.
To view the video go to the Videos section of the Group Website or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/EPTR.htm. For those who have problems accessing here, it is also available on the mirror site: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/EPTR.htm .

To access click on the banner on the Yahoo Home page or use this link: http://movies. groups.yahoo. com/group/ pota/files/ ACC.htm
To view the video go to the Videos section of the Group Website or use this link: http://movies. groups.yahoo. com/group/ pota/files/ Misc./Stuff/ EPTR.htm. For those who have problems accessing here, it is also available on the mirror site: http://www.potamedi aarchive. com/EPTR. htm .

.htmlThere's an interesting open letter from the screenwriter of Watchmen over on 'Ain't it cool'
In it, he asks that anyone thinking of seeing Watchmen to make sure they do - and anyone who's already seen it to go see it again!
If, like me, you are somewhat cynical about his about his interests, consider this comment... It certainly struck a chord with me.
"Demonstrate the power of the fans, because it'll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we'd like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again."
I'm not going to try and sell you Watchmen but it was a risky movie to make and is far, far better than I ever would have dreamed. Looking ahead I'd rather have a risky APES movie than a 'safe' one.

On Monday, March 16 (5 PM Pacific) Home
Theater Forum will have a live internet chat with Schawn Belston, a Fox
restorationist. The reason is because of the new Blu-Ray of "The Robe", but I'm
sure he can give details on how Fox does their movies in general. I'm not sure
if he worked on POTA specifically. But it might be informative to throw out a
question or just read the transcript the next day. HTF's chats are usually worth
it and they don't come along often anymore.

Schawn Belston absolutely worked on PLANET. I remember reading here in
the group of when he was working on it and showing a
"print-in-progress" at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY a few
years ago. I think he said then that a couple reels of original camera
negative were missing from near the end of the film.
Anyway, I won't be able to monitor this thing, but I hope someone asks
him why PLANET doesn't have the stereo mix on the Blu-ray it did on the
35th Anniversary DVD, and why the final shot on the Blu-ray is so
bright, because it really is too bright. It doesn't flicker like it
did on the DVD transfer for the 35th Ann. edition, but it's still got a
problem. Why does it look better in BENEATH than on PLANET?
By the way, I will be buying THE ROBE. The transfer on the old DVD is
terrible.

Entertainment's 35th Anniversary Edition of 'Planet Of The Apes' the studio has hidden some very cool, vintage footage.
Insert the second disc of the DVD set and from the Main Menu select the 'Ape Phenomenon' menu entry. Now, highlight the menu entry that reads 'Main Menu' and press the 'Right' arrow key on your remote control. This will highlight a figure on the right hand side and if you press 'Enter' now, you will get to see a vintage commercial for Planet Of The Apes action figures!

I was calling my friend (Sharry) who I got separated from. She was the only one who would come with me because my sister flaked out and refused to come a week before the event. Sharry was telling me to try to find Exit 18, because that's where she was, and that was also where Don Pedro Colley was...and I think I was around Exit 10 when she phoned...but it was REALLY hard to hear because it was so crowded and noisy.

To access click on the banner on the Yahoo Home page or use this link:
http://movies. groups.yahoo. com/group/ pota/files/ ACC.htm The second new feature is an addition to the Group Website's Videos section that has been literally 38 years in the making.
To view the video go to the Videos section of the Group Website or use this link: http://movies. groups.yahoo. com/group/ pota/files/ Misc./Stuff/ EPTR.htm. For those who have problems accessing here, it is also available on the mirror site: http://www.potamedi aarchive. com/EPTR. htm .

Fox really should have included both in this Blu-ray package. Again,
here is Fox really not thinking right. How many people are going to
want to buy a Blu-ray release of DEMETRIUS & THE GALDIATORS? How many
people even remember this movie? THE ROBE as historical significance
as the first movie released in Cinemascope; DEMETRIUS is now just an
old camp Victor Mature movie. Fox should have included a restored
print of the sequel as a bonus, and then could have asked a few more
bucks for it -- and probably would sell a few more copies -- but I
guess they know what they're doing.... right?
Anyway, here's a trivia question for the group: How are THE ROBE and
it's sequel, DEMETRIUS & THE GALDIATORS, like PLANET and its immediate
sequel, BENEATH?
You should have a list of at least three answers.

Ok, that's one correct answer, but there's more.
By the way, I just noticed in the info about this online chat with

I agree that Breck back after a nuclear holocaust would've been interesting
(as marvel's adaptation shows). However, I've also found it interesting in
certain book and films when minor characters in one story (Kolp in CONQUEST,
Hannibal Lecter and Jack Crawford in the original RED DRAGON novel,
Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2001: A Space Odyssey) become major characters in the
sequels, (BATTLE, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, 2010: Odyssey Two, 2061: Odyssey Three).
One could say the same thing happened on BENEATH. Both Zaius and Nova were more
prominent to the story, whereas Zira, Cornelius, and Taylor were all more
supporting characters. Admittedly, Zaius was a major player in both, but I
think that Zira and Cornelius were *slightly* more prominent characters in
the first film.

I think the answer to that would differ depend on how long a property has
been around. Something like Batman that has gone through multiple different
comic, film, and television adaptations certainly would have a much more divided
crowd. At the same time though, once Batman was in the public eye there was
always a presence (often, in multiple formats) so that question becomes harder
to answer because it's consistent presence allows for different interpretations.
In the case of BSG, the original series came out and although it only
lasted one season those characters, stories, and concepts were kept alive by fans
for nearly 30 years before Moore came in and changed everything. So in that
case, I'd say that the original TV series- by default- defines what BSG
is.
In many cases, I'd be inclined to say that whatever brought the concept
mass popularity would (again by default) be the definitive version. The
original five films are what made Apes popular even though the first film
has little in common with the novel on which it's based. Best as I can recall,
I've never seen anyone complaining that it was different than the book, and in
fact I'll go as far as to say that the film improved vastly over the source
material. The two television series had different characters, but the
overall themes were the same. What they didn't do was go an radically
change something already established in the films (the source
material both TV series were spawned from) and say "Hey, let's
retell the stories of the films in television format, but how about if Taylor
and Brent were women, and it was a race of mutant apes underground that
sympathized with human beings and it should be Dr. Zaius who escapes in Taylor's
spaceship and becomes the first Lawgiver and blah blah blah".
Another thing to bear in mind that it was the popularity of the five films
that brought about the two TV series, the Marvel magazine, and so forth. So
again, I'd have to go with whatever brought the concept mass popularity is what
defines it. Variations on a theme are OK as long as you aren't changing things
for the sake of changing them and/or some of the other questionable reasons
things like that happen. Major changes should serve a purpose in terms of
telling the story, and that's something I never saw in the BSG reboot.
Chris L.
>>Well then you're getting into the question as to exactly what BSG
is. Is it the concept or the execution? There are many concepts from
Sherlock Holmes to Tarzan to Buck Rogers to Batman that have had
various executions over the years. Fans of one particular execution may not
like
another verision of the same concept. (I know there are fans of the
'60 Batman TV series who hate the recent movies.) But just because
the recent execution of BSG is different from the '70s version doesn't
mean it is not still BSG. If BSG had been done in the '60s rather than in
the '70s, after Star Wars, the execution might have looked entirely
different.
In the past there have been several dicussions here about what is
POTA. (Is it just talking apes? If so then Lancalot Link is a version
of POTA.) For most it is usually whatever version of POTA that first
made them a fan. For some it is the movies, or even the first movie. For
some it is the TV show or comics. I'm sure there are even some for which
it is the novel who think the movie it not POTA. >>

Well, the microcassette existed in 1972, but certainly not a microcassette
that could contain video images. Dehn (or the prop master) probably just
took the existing technology a step further and figured that eventually it'd be
able to contain images- much like the mini-videotapes you can get for hand held
camcorders now.

And isn't the cassette in Conquest a microcassette that has video
images? Seems to me that would have been seen as futuristic as that
technology wasn't available back in 1972. <<

However, I don't want to discourage anyone from discussing political topics as they relate to POTA. Instead I would encourage it. Let's not forget that POTA was a political film and there are still many issues like war, torture, evolution, etc. that can be related back to the film. Over 40 years after it was made, POTA is still relevant.

.htmlWhat you are saying is true but most of the cases you bring up were creative decisions to further develop a interesting minor charater. In the case of Breck, it was because Don Murray did not want to come back so they went to Kolp who was not particularly interesting in Conquest. So instead of exploring another aspect of Breck's character, we get Kolp who played it as kind of a generic crazy bad guy.

Very cool Tim. I never went to any of these events as a kid. I was wondering if anyone did go and could tell us about them.

But there were times when Batman or Sherlock Holmes or Tarzan had not been around for a long time. When the Batman TV series was done in the 60's the concept was only about 30 years old. When the original Batman movie and radio serials were done in the 40s, it was even younger. The reason many of these properties have lasted as long as they have is because they are periodically updated and, dare I say, re-imagined for a new generation.

Other than within a small cadre of devoted fans, BSG was dead for years until Moore resurrected it. Most under the age of 30 or 35 were and still are unfamiliar with the original. Unlike Star Trek, BSG wasn't rerun constantly for new fans to discover it.
Also, it is not for the fans to decide what BSG or any concept is. They maybe fans but they don't owe the property. I think it was Moore who once said, 'Fans assume a right of ownership that they don't merit either creatively or legally'.

Not necessarily. If you asked most people what they thought of when asked about MASH or The Odd Couple, most would answer the TV series. But both were based on highly successful movies which were based on a bestselling novel and a hit play, respectively. Most people who are not hardcore fans tend to remember only the last successful version of a property or the version they were first exposed to, but that doesn't make it the definative version. I would doubt that Neil Simon would agree that the Odd Couple TV series was the definitive version.
It's like asking people who is their favorite James Bond. Among hardcore Bond fans it is most likely the actor who played the role when they first became a fan. For the general public it is probably the actor who played Bond in the last film they liked.

I would bet that even when PLANET premiered there were fans of the novel shaking their heads feeling that the film ruined the concept.

I think that there are hardcore fans of the POTA TV series or Marvel comics who would dispute you on that. I do agree that when you ask most people who are not hardcore fans what they think of when asked about POTA most would say the original movies series. But that is mainly because the original movie was the most successful version of the concept to date, at least in the US. If the TV series had been a big hit and lasted 10 years or in the UK where the TV series was a big hit, most non-hardcore fans would say the TV series was the definitive version.
As far as BSG, most of the changes brought what was a cartoony & silly action action-adverture concept up to the level of something more thoughtful, adult and serious.

.htmlThanks, there was supposed to be a decision at FOX last month if the script was being given the go ahead. Haven't read or heard anything yet on if the decision has been made.

.htmlFOX does love to profiteer. Next the rental copies will delete the last 5 minutes of a film so you'll be forced to buy it to find out how it ends.

.htmlThe one I went to was at a MASTERS Department store. It was very simple. There was a guy in a Corneilus suit giving out pictures with a printed signature.
At some stores they had General Urko as well. I have newpaper ads of different stores where this was in in the NYC area.
I'm currently selling an outfit on ebay that Mego made for me.
