.html In the article THE NIGHT STALKER is mentioned, but that's a UNIVERSAL release and it doesn't have a single bonus feature!?
None of what's in the article surpises me, since it was FOX (and DISNEY) who during the on set of DVD over 10yrs ago didn't want to support the new format and instead wanted DIVIX and pay/rental disc format that bombed.

Here's a question... what's the first thing you think of if you hear, 'Planet of the apes'
Try NOT to think about it, just say the 1st thing/word/image that pops into your head.
Me? It's that image of Urko that was used as the cover for one of the UK editions of 'Monkey Planet'.

Thanks Terry. I think this is a great idea. Sometimes discussions threads do go off the track and veer far away from POTA.
However, I don't want to discourage anyone from discussing political topics as they relate to POTA. Instead I would encourage it. Let's not forget that POTA was a political film and there are still many issues like war, torture, evolution, etc. that can be related back to the film. Over 40 years after it was made, POTA is still relevant.

Ok, fine. Limited film buff knowledge here, but anyway....
How are THE ROBE and its sequel, DEMETERIUS AND THE GLADIATORS, like
PLANET OF THE APES and its sequel, BENEATH THE....?
1.) Both sequels were made to cash in on the success of the original.
2.) Both sequels were made on budgets far less than the original.
3.) Both sequels used sets left over from the original.
4.) Leon Shamroy was Director of Photography on THE ROBE and PLANET OF
THE APES, and Milton Krasner was DP on DEMETERIUS and BENEATH.
Also of note: William Eckhardt was a Second Unit Director on
DEMETERIUS and Unit Production Manager on PLANET and CONQUEST. Emil
Kosa Jr. did matte paintings on THE ROBE, D&TG, and PLANET.

Really only one interior set was reused, the animal laboratory. And again this is not unusual for sequels. The James Bond films reused M's and Miss Moneypenny's offices many times. But there are a few exceptions to that rule star wars second three films more money pumped into it and of course more made.

Isn't that pretty much true of most sequels. They tend not to make
sequels to unsuccessful movies, unless they do really well on Home
Video like Austin Powers.

Again wasn't that pretty much the paradigm for sequels at that time.
Even today there are sequels that are made for less money than their
predecessors

Really only one interior set was reused, the animal laboratory. And
again this is not unusual for sequels. The James Bond films reused M's
and Miss Moneypenny's offices many times. The Star Wars films reused
the interior of Han Solo's ship. And the Star Trek movies reused the
Enterprise sets.

Scientists are like everybody else. There's
always someone ready to do something to make a buck. It doesn't sound like the
new "Apes" will take the slave aspect of "Conquest", but a slave force would be
reason to make them smarter, and then they open Pandora's Box. Or just planning
on making them smarter so they're attractive pets. That's a storyline that would
work in this economy. Money, money, money.
Though I don't know how much of a "whoops!"
factor there would be. They'd have to plan out how smart the ape would be. It'd
be hard for intelligence to be self-generating. But even the best science
fiction is suspension of disbelief.
For me, "Conquest" was the hardest to
swallow as a story (except the jump from "Beneath" to "Escape") so they have
their work cut out for them.

Saw it again last night, and I have to admit that it played better the
second time. However, the changes at the end annoyed me even more than the first
time I saw it, so I don't imagine that's going to change over the course of
time.
I enjoyed Malin Ackerman's performance as Silk Spectre II a little
more as well (and not for the obvious reasons she displayed in the Owl
Ship), but giving one of Dr. Manhattan's best lines to her at the end
really wasn't necessary. I'm also more and more convinced that Matthew
Goode was just too young for Ozymandias.
Definitely worth a second look for those of you considering it.

His recent interview in Starlog would seem to indicate the former. I think
it was more that he didn't want to do the character again as he felt it had
already been done as opposed to not wanting to do another POTA film per
se.

Considering Jurassic Park and Westworld, does anyone else think that Michael Crichton had a bad experience at a theme park as a child?

Regarding the jump from "Beneath" to "Escape", have you considered the theory that Brent traveled in a ship SEPARATE FROM the crashed one near which he buried his skipper? A pair of ships would be more likely to have at least one successful arrival in the rescue endeavor, while also having better capacity for hosting the return trip of the four astronauts they were pursuing.
It's been a while since I've seen "Escape" again, but I recently saw "Beneath" again and this possibility doesn't seem ruled out just because Brent's potentially intact ship wasn't featured. And in "Escape" I don't recall that Zira, Dr. Milo or Cornelius specifically stated that the spaceship in which they traveled had been SUBMERGED under water, did they?
Granted, at the beginning of "Escape" the ship looks like it may have spent quite a bit of time under water. Or it might simply appear like a ship that had already made two orbital re-entries. Monopolistic, bureaucratic NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia showed taxpayers how such an endeavor can be rough on a vessel (at least when its construction & maintenance are entrusted to anti-competitive government contractors that stifle competitive upstarts, as http://www.OrphansOfApollo.com helps document).

got a POTA star or two in their library. It's only about movies though, not TV
shows or their acclaimed cartoon collections.

.htmlThe third ship theory falls apart based on dialogue in both Beneath and Escape.
In Beneath Brent says to the Skipper, 'our computer's shot'. If he had a seperate ship it would have its own computer. By saying 'our' it is a clear indication that they arrived in the same ship.
Later, after hearing Ursus' speach Brent says, "I've got to get back up there. I don't know how or what with". If he had his own seperate ship, he would have known how and with what.
In Escape, the President clearly states that two not three ships were missing and that the Ape-o-nauts ship was 'the one commanded by Colonel Taylor'.
Cornelius also states that Dr. Milo had salvaged the ship which would indicate it was something more involved than just finding it intact.

Yeah, I got it last Saturday. Fox has done a really good job here.
The Lowery Group (whoever they are -- I believe they've done miracles
with the Bond films) worked on this. I wonder if they worked on
PLANET? From what I see, I doubt it, but I'm hopeful that in the
future PLANET will get further attention. Of course that means me

It's been announced that the cult Saturday
morning show from 1976, "Monster Squad", is coming to DVD. Buck Kartalian played
the wolfman character (that's kind of like an ape). Buck of course played Julius
in "Planet" and Frank in "Conquest" (though you wouldn't know it from the
Blu-ray extras). He's rather proud of "Monster Squad" and it's one of the things
fans thank him for. Anyway, for those of you who know what I'm talking about,
it's coming soon.

.htmlThanks for the link, Zach, but I can't seem to find contents at:
http://www.ansanaut.com
and even Archive.org doesn't have anything.
Meanwhile James, your points make a good deal of sense. I think I can offer some POTENTIAL rebuttals though:
1) What if the dual rescue ships had computers that were interdependent in some way, to avoid losing contact or synchronicity. Or more realistically still for that era: to maximize scarce computer memory space in an era that made Pentium processors look ultra-futuristic? They DID want to avoid the confusing fate suffered by the Icarus ship, after all. Thus, if the computer was malfunctioning in one ship, it could have been down in the other? Didn't we see something akin to that happen to the invaders in the movie Independence Day? Next:
2) Brent understandably didn't know how to get back with computer problems holding his ship back, so he made such comments when hearing Ursus' speech... The desperate nature of Brent's comments was likely intended to maximize audience's feelings of desperation and desire to make do with what they had. After all, in the seminal book Monkey Planet, the suspense was diluted by the presence of a ship on orbit (which I vaguely recall from reading that book a couple of decades ago, literally unable to put it down until the very end). Stress is the mother of innovation, and audiences needed stimulating. 5 centuries ago Hernan Cortez figured he could conquer Mexico if he burned his own ships, thereby forcing his crew members (many of whom had been in prison) to make do with what they had. It may be that Dr. Milo was able to "salvage" the ship's network using his supply of trinkets and salvaged computer parts (some of which were advanced, relative to what
Brent had depended upon).
So that seems to leave just the U.S. president's remarks to try and deal with, in attempting to defend the potentially face-saving dual rescue ship theory. Without seeing his exact wording, I'm intellectually cornered. Perhaps part of what the president said didn't get transmitted, just as Neil Armstrong's famous words got cut off midway, leaving us with merely:
"That's one small step for [SIC] man; one giant leap for mankind."
Maybe the president said that the Apes in Escape used a ship [like that] used by Colonel George Taylor?
To paraphrase the Lawgiver at the end of Battle: who knows? :-)

To: pota@yahoogroups.com Subject: [pota] Re: Is the logical leap from "Beneath" to "Escape" explainable by Brent's DUAL ship? Thanks for the link, Zach, but I can't seem to find contents at:
http://www.ansanaut .com
and even Archive.org doesn't have anything.
Milo was able to "salvage" the ship's network using his supply of trinkets and salvaged computer parts (some of which were advanced, relative to what Brent
had depended upon).

This link should work: http://www.goingfaster.com/icarus/tableofcontents.html" > > Meanwhile James, your points make a good deal of sense. Except that the line in the script is "Our computer is shot", singular. Not "Our computers are shot", plural. (https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_beneath_final.pdf Page 13)
So if there is only one computer, there can only be one ship, not two.
> > 2) Brent understandably didn't know how to get back with computer problems holding his ship back, so he made such comments when hearing Ursus' speech... The desperate nature of Brent's comments was likely intended to maximize audience's feelings of desperation and desire to make do with what they had.
Since this arguement was predicated on the previous arguement that there were two computers, now that it has been proven there was only one computer; it is also invalid. > > So that seems to leave just the U.S. president's remarks to try and deal with, in attempting to defend the potentially face-saving dual rescue ship theory. You can see the exact wording here: https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_escape_final_1.pdf on page 27. Note the President says the ship is one of two missing ships, not one of three.
> > Maybe the president said that the Apes in Escape used a ship [like that] used by Colonel George Taylor? > No he says "To be exact, the one commanded by Colonel Taylor". So he is being pretty specific that the ship the Apes used was Taylor's.

.html.html Just saw "The Robe" on Blu-ray.
Looks good but nowhere near the quality of the Planet of the Apes films on blu-ray. Not even close.
Any word on when "The Ten Commandments" comes out on Blu-ray?
Now that I'm really looking forward to.
