Thanks for that. Now I wonder: how likely is it that a spaceship that's submerged in water, like Icarus was, could be made functional using 38th Century Apes' technology, ancient manuals and spare parts, like the authors of Escape appear to have claimed that it was?
I should mention that this is relevant not just for the original 5 movies. As we recall, the 2001 reimagining concludes by suggesting that Thade perhaps recovered Leo's vessel from underwater and traveled back to Earth.
Of course, the executives at 20th Century Fox said the conclusion of the 2001 movie means whatever we want for it to. But the resurrection of the sunken vessel does seem like a reasonable inference, even if technologically unreasonable. Or is it?
In concluding, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Lake Powell, Utah (where the crash landing was filmed in 1967). Do feel free to visit http://www.LakePowell.com .

Admittedly, it's not possible. and as much as I love the third film, it has one of the biggest improbabilities of all five films (the least probable, in my opinion, being that the apes would acquire higher intelligence, speech and culture in under two decades). The ship (which, according to the short film on the Blu-Ray release, is called Liberty-1), should not have been able to be DISCOVERED, let alone brought back to the surface, dragged to shore, repaired, launched and taken to orbit. But since I love the film, the only thing to do is to stick my fingers in my ears and pretend that's not the case.

Actually, the film never suggests that--it leaves him in the desert, sitting trapped in the Oberon, and never reveals how he got to Earth. Some fans have suggested he managed to get one of the remaining pods on the station working...which also isn't that probable, but makes the most sense, in my opinion. Had the Dark Horse series not been canceled, it would have eventually explained that one. <.html

What's the Dark Horse series? Perhaps a comic book series?

.html I posted here a couple weeks ago about inadvertently finding an Easter Egg on the POTA and I couldn't find a way back to it.
I finally got the info I needed to get the Easter Egg from someone on the Home Theater Forum. Here is the way:
Click Special Features, then click The Archives of the Apes, and find
Vintage Planet of the Apes Featurette [1968]. Push the 'right' button
of your remote, and the banana picture will show. Select the Banana picture and you will see the Mego POTA commercial.

Just saw "The Robe" on Blu-ray.
Looks good but nowhere near the quality of the Planet of the Apes films
on blu-ray. Not even close.
Any word on when "The Ten Commandments" comes out on Blu-ray?
Now that I'm really looking forward to.

TC is pure poetry in motion. From the script to directing. Awesome.
Hopefully ABC will at least show it in HD this year (easter/passover week).

The film is so popular and continues to be a high ratings grabber on Network TV it calls for a new HD transfer.
It would also be nice if more can be found as bonus material.
I have the script and I know there are scenes that were filmed but cut from the final release. The script also has a fantastic prolog that was never film due to expense (the formation of the pillar of fire (God) which in turns creates the Earth).
That unfilmed beginning could easily be made now, digitally. It would be nice if they did it as a bonus piece with the option of viewing it with the film since it was planned but not done due to lack of budget. They could always get permission from the Demille family, and approval.

.htmlHi Dave:
To answer your question, although during my self-described POTA tour of Lake Powell back in August of 1992 I only interacted with employees of the tour companies there, I do think they were aware of their POTA heritage. However, they said at the time that expressions of POTA interest were rare. The Patrick Swayze movie Point Break (which had recently come out after being filmed there in part) was more the rage. And churchgoers were interested in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" heritage, as it was filmed there decades before, as well. I nevertheless had a delightful time. And believe it or not, a Linda Hamilton look-alike who worked there actually asked me out for the evening and during our fun date she said she was amused by my unique enthusiasm about the place's POTA heritage. Now, thanks to the Tim Burton movie (like it or not), my guess is that POTA inquiries are more common. Forbidden Zone scenes were filmed not too far from there, and it helped revive the
franchise too (like the overall DVD sales).
Have a great weekend :-)

I wasn't expecting it to look as good as APES, but sometimes it came
close to looking as good as PLANET, but if you've seen the original DVD
of THE ROBE, what they've released on Blu-ray is a miracle.
As for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (which is a Paramount Picture).... Even on
Blu-ray, I wouldn't expect anything that'll look much better than THE
ROBE now looks, but COMMANDMENTS was shot in VistaVision and so will
fill up the entire 16X9 screen and look pretty damn good. As for when
a Blu-ray will happen? Has Paramount released much of their older
titles on Blu-ray yet? With the recession, the studios are really
cutting down on their release schedules. Even on standard DVD, Fox has
hardly anything coming out this Spring. I was hoping we'd finally get
RIO CONCHOS on DVD, but no yet again.

Yeah, I went there in '87 and then again in '91 or '92, can't remember.
One guy I talked to was puzzled that I'd be interested in the area
because parts of PLANET were shot there, but most people find
movie-geek obsession rather strange. Screw 'em. I took more than the
boat tour though, where they did mention as we passed the area were
"Charlton Heston's spaceship sank in POTA," i also rented a boat and
swam in the spot were the ship sinking was shot. The level of the lake
was much higher then than in 1967, so I couldn't find the spot were the
astronauts brought the rafy ashore, but I was able to hike to the spots
were they found the plant and such. Someday I'll scan the photos I
took -- if I can find them!
One of the bad things about going there though is that it kind of
destroyed the "mystique" of the entire setting in the film. When I was
a kid, I didn't know where these places were, and so they only existed
in the film and were "real," but not anymore sadly.

Actually, a time warp wasn't part wasn't part of POTA until Dehn
introduced it with ESCAPE, although he (or at least Brent) does seem
confused about the issue in BENEATH (another reason that movie is a
mess), but anyway, Taylor did not get to the future earth (AKA the
planet of the apes) via a time warp.

No seriously, I like Ten Commandments because it's truely an epic film in every sense of the word. Very few films are like it. While a lot of films are labeled as epic, they come nowhere near the epic scale of Ten Commandments. "It's Unreal. Over the Top" which makes it so grand and epic. That's the beauty of it. ;o)

I don't know of any rockets that use kerosene. He may have meant hydrazine.
the retros on the shuttle and satellites use hydrazine, which give you the most
bang for the buck weight wise. It's made from the same industrial chemistry
processes as ammonia. The smaller ones use solid fuel like the boosters on
the shuttle. The main engine is good ol' liquid hydrogen and oxygen.
The most improbable rocket fuel was that thing in the X Prize that used
some sort of nitrous from ground up tires. Anyone know anything about
that? Jet packs use really strong hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst,
but one man can only carry about 30 seconds worth.

.htmlWell, as I've said before, I find it best not to think about this
stuff. I guess some find it "fun" to try and make some implausibility
plausible, but I find that mostly just makes things even sillier. POTA
got sillier the more they tried to tie it in a loop. The original is
best because its backstory, and I'm talking before there were any
sequels, was ambiguous. I remember very much how much fun it was to
ponder how the planet of the apes came into being. The sequels after
BENEATH (which are also prequels if you except the time loop view) are
kind of spoilers.

Yes any number of factors could have affected Taylor's ship which made
it possible for Dr. Milo to find the ship.

Steven Colbert mentioned this on 'The Colbert Report' a week or so back in
his "When Animals Attack Our Morals" segment, but he also mentioned that could
understand wanting to throw rocks at Swedes- especially after seeing 'Mamma
Mia'.
(James will have to fix this link, undoubtedly)
Chris L.
>>From BBC News
Zoo chimp 'planned' stone attacks A
male chimpanzee in a Swedish zoo planned hundreds of stone-throwing attacks on
zoo visitors, according to researchers. Keepers at Furuvik Zoo found that
the chimp collected and stored stones that he would later use as
missiles. Further, the chimp learned to recognise how and when parts of
his concrete enclosure could be pulled apart to fashion further
projectiles. The findings are reported in the journal Current
Biology. There has been scant evidence in previous research that animals
can plan for future events. Crucial to the current study is the fact that
Santino, a chimpanzee at the zoo in the city north of Stockholm, collected the
stones in a calm state, prior to the zoo opening in the morning. The
launching of the stones occurred hours later - during dominance displays to zoo
visitors - with Santino in an "agitated" state. This suggests that
Santino was anticipating a future mental state - an ability that has been
difficult to definitively prove in animals, according to Mathias Osvath, a
cognitive scientist from Lund University in Sweden and author of the new
research. "We've done experimental studies, and the chimps in my mind
show very clearly that they do plan for future needs, but it has been argued
that perhaps this was an experimental artefact," Dr Osvath told BBC
News. "Now we have this spontaneous behaviour, which is always in some
sense better evidence." Dr Osvath embarked on the study after zoo staff
discovered caches of stones in the section of the enclosure facing the public
viewing area. Since the initial discovery in 1997, hundreds of the caches
have been removed to protect visitors, to whom the caching and the aggressive
displays seem strictly related; in the off season, Santino neither hoards the
projectiles nor hurls them. Most interestingly, Santino seems to have
learned how to spot weak parts of the concrete "boulders" in the centre of the
enclosure. When water seeps into cracks in the concrete and freezes,
portions become detached that make a hollow sound when tapped. Santino
was observed gently knocking on the "boulders", hitting harder to detach bits
that were loosened and adding those to his stashes of ammunition. There
are a number of examples of complex behaviour in apes that suggest forms of
consciousness. Planning behaviour like that of the current work is
connected to so-called autonoetic consciousness, where information due to memory
can be distinguished from that from the senses. "I'm personally convinced
that at least chimps do plan for future needs, that they do have this autonoetic
consciousness, " Dr Osvath said. "I hope that other zoos or those in
the wild will look more closely at what is happening," he added. "I bet
there must be a lot of these kinds of behaviours out there, and I wouldn't be
surprised if we find them in dolphins or other species."

I totally agree with you on this Al. It is the acting, the
gestures, the lines and look of the film that make it so memorable and
makes it a pleasure to come back and see it again and again.
Unlike so many film done today with no talent actors, bad lines and
crude unprofessional color.
When films turn too gritty what they gain in being "real" they lose
in the magic that is movies. There is a mixed up way of thinking
now which prevails that "real" is movie making - not true. That's
documentary film-making. The suspension of belief is part of the
joy enjoying movies the craft in film-making is somehow convincing the
audience to over look the impossibilities and accept what they see as if
it were real. To be over taken by the grander, the possibility,
through lines that state more than the usual spoken word. Sights
filled with color beauty and carefully captured images that portray the
story. And finally, music that fills in the emotional aspect touch
us on a level the sights and words can't.
The Ten Commandments is art and the original magic that was the
movies. If I can still believe and accept talking ape with time
warps, sunken spaceships reused and sparkling teeth on Nova, I can
accept flowery lines of dialog, big stages scenes, and acting as
broad as the sights depicted. Like there are different ways to
paint a canvas, wet, dry, brush, and or knife - there is The Ten
Commandments.

No seriously, I like Ten Commandments because it's truely an
epic film in every sense of the word. Very few films are like
it. While a lot of films are labeled as epic, they
come nowhere near the epic scale of Ten Commandments. "It's

True, it's a case of failing to see the forest for the trees. Taylor's (and Brent's) ship are just devices to place the characters in the story, they are not the story. It's like analyzing the helicopter that brought Armando & Caesar to the city in Conquest.

The Forum guys are just getting started. The NEC was very much a trial run. I know they're hoping that some Orangutans and Chimps will join their ranks in the future. If anyone from the UK feels that way inclined I'm sure they'll be delighted to hear from you.

Produced by sculptor/mask creator-collector Eliot
Brodsky, MONSTERPALOOZA! runs for three days - May 29-31, at the
Marriott Hotel in Burbank, California, right across the street from the Bob
Hope/Burbank Airport!
But here's the best part that concerns YOU and your
Internet Apes: at 2:30 PM on
SATURDAY MAY 30 I'll be moderating a panel ("Planet Of The Apes and
Beyond"!) with my Apes buddies and fellow makeup artists Tom Burman and Dan
Striepeke, and actor Lou "Lucius" Wagner for an intimate audience at one of
the MONSTERPALOOZA! discussion panels. We'll be reminiscing with
magnificent mindfuls of marvelous monkey memories, and a brief Q&A
session will follow. Panel time: 1 Hour. Does that sound like something some of
your gang might be interested in attending?
MONSTERPALOOZA! will be nothing short of
SPOOKTACULAR, and I can't urge you strongly enough to try and join us for the
entire event!
I'll have a table full of mementos for sale, plus
lots of my new stuff too, as will so many other incredibly talented people in
the makeup, FX and acting professions!
Let's meet at MONSTERPALOOZA!
Stay in touch, okay?

Yes there is an Audio Drama Adaptation coming for Beneath. I am aiming for an initial release date for ep 1 in July. And then each ep will come out monthly after that. Have no fear more apes will be at the Sea to hear!

For any of you who have a On Demand service on your cable TV service, "Movieplex" and "StarzHD" are both providing all 5 Planet of the Apes movies in both widescreen and widescreen HD for the next two months. I persoanlly have Comcast Cable along with my Direct TV so I have Comcast on Demand. Apes on Demand is awesome and best of all, FREE to watch at anytime.

Well, Jackie Earle Hailey (Kraik from "The
Legacy" episode) is still on a roll. He was considered memorable in "Watchmen"
and now, hot off the press, he's been cast as the iconic horror villain Freddy
Krueger in the new "Nightmare on Elm Street" reboot. This role has haunted me a
long time because of my last name ("Are you related to Freddy Krueger"?) but I'm
willing to go through that again if Jackie's in the part. That's cool. - - -

.html.html The picture qualities are great in HD. StarzHD on Demand is showing them in HD TV format 16:9 (no widescreen black bars shown) but while the quality is great, of course, nothing beats 1080p on Bluray. It looks as good as your adverage HD movie on television. As far as sound, Planet's suround sound is no different than DVD suround sound. So no real improvement there.
Movieplex on Demand is showing them as well in widescreen but not HD. Although they have a neat little Movieplex trailer for Apes before each presentation of the films. I'll try to record it over the weekend and post it for you guy's to see.
