Sad. How people can try and tell others that that thing was a prop in

I wonder if in some archive someplace is the original Emil Kosa matte

Oops... correction.
It's "Movieplex on Demand" and "Movieplex HD on Demand." Not StarzHD on Demand.

(in case anyone has Comcast Cable or any "On Demand" cable service out there).

The picture qualities are great in HD. StarzHD on Demand is showing them in HD TV format 16:9 (no widescreen black bars shown) but while the quality is great, of course, nothing beats 1080p on Bluray. It looks as good as your adverage HD movie on television. As far as sound, Planet's suround sound is no different than DVD suround sound. So no real improvement there.

Movieplex on Demand is showing them as well in widescreen but not HD. Although they have a neat little Movieplex trailer for Apes before each presentation of the films. I'll try to record it over the weekend and post it for you guy's to see.

If they are being shown in 16.9, filling the entire TV screen then they are cropping off the sides of the 2.35:1 frame in order to fill the 1.85:1 TV screen.  That sucks!
I knew TNT does it with the LORD OF THE RINGS FILMS, but I wasn't aware other stations were doing the same thing.
It's bad enough cable stations have commericals, and even edit films for time or content, now they're modifying aspect ratios which were mastered to show the original frame, especially for HD!
...and we're paying to have a service that does this?!
It as bad as having to pay for a service to watch the dreck of the Sci-fi channel.
APES on demand, well, it sounded good.

On Demand is commercial free and uncut. As for the cropping, it still looks great in HD.
And to have it on demand for two whole months it's pretty damn cool as well.

So no real improvement there..

Movieplex on Demand is showing them as well in widescreen but not HD. Although they have a neat little Movieplex trailer for Apes before each presentation of the films. I'll try to record it over the weekend and post it for you guy's to see.

For any of you who have a On Demand service on your cable TV service,
"Movieplex" and "StarzHD" are both providing all 5 Planet of the Apes
movies in both widescreen and widescreen HD for the next two months. I
persoanlly have Comcast Cable along with my Direct TV so I have Comcast
on Demand. Apes on Demand is awesome and best of all, FREE to watch at
anytime.

You've watched them then, Al? Are they the same transfers as the
Blu-rays?

Hmm, I've never thought of Kolp's character in BATTLE as the standard bad guy. There's moments when he's a little loopy, but then he also has these coldly sociopathic moments like when he tells Alma about the Bomb. That he so matter-of-factly would be willing to destroy the world rather than lose a battle to an ape society he **just** found out existed shows a certain depth of psychosis to the character. Willing to accept his current conditions, but also willing to instantly go back to the hate that brought about those same conditions in the first place.

characters in the sequels, (BATTLE, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, 2010: Odyssey

BENEATH. Both Zaius and Nova were more prominent to the story, whereas
Zira, Cornelius, and Taylor were all more supporting characters.
Admittedly, Zaius was a major player in both, but I think that Zira and
Cornelius were *slightly* more prominent characters in the first film.<<<.html

What you're saying about how the part is written is very true. I don't disagree. I just think that Severn Darden gives a generic bad guy performance. I also think that Don Murray is a better actor and would have given a better performance, one that would have better highlighed the aspects of the written character that you discussed below.

We finally bought a blu ray player this weekend, so I finally got to watch my Apes set.Wow! I love the animated Lawgiver---I want to see more of that guy. He's a real character. It also opens my eyes to how good a cartoon series could now be.The movies look beautiful--Planet is just stunning. The extras! Interviews with Lou, Austin, Don,Don Pedro, Linda,Bill et al.Wonderful to see folk like Noah---and they all seem so PROUD of Apes.Eric's bits are excellent--I've got a new appreciation of Battle now.The behind the scenes pics are wonderful--especially for the last three movies and, particularly, Battle. It's Apes Heaven (even if they gave the UK a really inferior package!).One thing--didn't I read somewhere that Booth Colman was intervewed for this set---I didn't see him in there? Oh yeah, this could be the year!
It says HD at the bottom of the description. :o)

I agree with you John. The reason I say I'm not worried about it is because obviously Fox is taking their time about it.
So I'm not about to bounce off the walls hoping for some news. Whenever it may be, it will be.

In the meantime they'll be plenty of sci-fi films to countdown. :o)

I'm excited by the prospect of the new movie and, henceforth, will shut my mouth about any reservations as to the approach mooted.I'm going to support the movie any way I can from now on and if anybody catches me bitching they can call me on it.The forfeit will be having to watch any Star Trek--I caught a bit of Enterprise last night and nearly vomited, so that's not a challenge I throw down lightly. Apes are back!!! Wah-hoo!!! as Nick Fury used to say.John, Scrolls.

No, I got Booth and Buck Kartalian involved with it. But they were so pushed for time Booth wasn't able to schedule it. They interviewed Buck but didn't use him at all. Bill got to talk about working in a hobby shop. So that was the big disappointment for me about the set, the waste of interviews. They have all these people and they talk about toys.

It doesn't mention anything about Caesar or did I miss something? And from the dates on the comments this was from last January so it is really not hot off the presses.

"Its that time once again when I feel I have the
time to concentrate on a new issue of AC

I've already got some stuff ready and
      planned
but here are some other topics etc that I would
like to see some contributions on

So if anyone knows anything about the following
      topics please contact me at
hoknescards@... so we can discuss you
writing a short article or giving some input
for the next issue due next month

Can you help with these topics?

1 Summary so far of all news relating
      to "CAESAR":
2 Summary and overview and purpose of Ape City
      Chronicles - James
3 Review of Timeline of the POTA books by
      Rich Handley
4 Collecting POTA Stuff - article about your
personal pota collection and interest over the years (Wayne
      Sylvester !!)
5 Review of Luiz book of POTA and makeup
      process
      apedami@...
6 anything else you feel like writing about,
      talking about, etc."

Cover Artwork - submitted by Graham amgrafcomics@...
Original Fan Fiction - submitted by Rob rhob1960@...
First comic strip of POTA: The Truth by Terry
      Hoknes and Robin Medford robinartwork60@...
POTA Cast Still Alive article by Terry
      Winnipeg POTA Collectibles
      Article"

I'd include something about the Blu-ray release (including the book!),
and instead of an article written by just one person (i.e. you'r
      e
standard "DVD Review" type thing) how about comments from everyone here
that's bought the thing, all collected together and organized into some
      sort of AC thingy?

It doesn't mention anything about Caesar or did I miss something? And from the dates on the comments this was from last January so it is really not hot off the presses.

I can't stand that Lawgiver stuff and don't plan to ever look at it

What Fox did was no different than what Disney did with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" bluray disc. They too also have a CGI Crossbones (scull) introducing the bluray menu. I guess it was the "In Thing" to do.

      Personally I like it.

I'm going to duck the bananas that will be thrown at me: I'm only a fan of the tv show.. I've never seen the original movie and I've never read a comic in my life.  I DID see the movie with Mark Wahlberg, and I enjoyed that okay... My best friend Rhonda was strangely attracted to Tim Roth in the movie... :)

Your loss that you have not seen the original movie or the follow up beneath ( my personal fav ) or the remaining three films.
What about the cartoon series either, i can understand you liking the t.v series that was also my intro to p.o.t.a's.
I will admit the burton film was good for special effects and make-up, but the acting was poor really for burton with some very good actors in the leading roles ( but the script was shocking ).
Please watch the originals this is where it all began.
Before anyone says trying to be a smart arse yes the book started it all but i mean the movies!

It is nice that you will be watching the original and now know that there is more beyond that.  This is the center of the universe for all sequel movies.  It was from these very movies that Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Terminator, and all other great sequel flicks had rose above the ashes to became pure icons.  Go forth and rot the very brain within you and become immortal like the rest of us, "you damn dirty ape"!!!!!

          Mark :)

This is a question I have wondered about for a while. Does anyone know how the 'broadcast rights' are determined for movies like Apes? Right now, the Encore networks are running the first film as part of the Sci Fi marathon and one of the other Encore networks is running Escape as just a regular listing. Some times, I believe that the Fox movie network will run the films at the same time the Encore network does and then you get networks like History and AMC that run them shortly afterwards. Any thoughts? It seems strange that a movie like 'Mission Impossible 2' is on TNT and TBS forever and now it shows up on Showtime with a lot of other movies that came out in 2000 and 2001. Are there cycles? Forgive me if I am not educated enought to know, but I am curious. Thanks!

            Biggest Film Flops and Fiascoes

Planet of the Apes (2001) OK, so it made almost $363 million worldwide (and only cost $100 million), so by Hollywood standards it was technically a success. But to us personally it is one of the greatest mistakes in filmmaking history. We were genuinely excited when we heard our favorite childhood movie was going to be remade by one of our favorite directors, Tim Burton. Let's face it, the only thing better than a monkey movie is a TALKING monkey movie. We ordered our tickets in advance. We got in line for the best seats and excitedly devoured our popcorn before lights out. Then came Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes." It lacked not only the charm of the original but also the charm of every other Tim Burton movie ever made. 20th Century Fox clearly agreed. Despite the film's box-office success, the previously discussed sequel never saw the light of day.

Hayworth's Dress And Heston's Apes Gear Set For Auction

Rita Hayworth's signature Gilda gown, Charlton Heston's Planet Of The Apes costume and Star Wars villain Darth Maul's lightsaber are among the highlights going under the hammer at an upcoming Hollywood memorabilia auction.

Despite the recession, bosses at auction house Profiles in History hope to land $30,000 to $50,000 (£20,690 to £34,480) for Hayworth's iconic 1940s movie dress and up to $60,000 (£41,380) for Darth Maul's weapon from Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.

And the outfit Heston wore as Colonel George Taylor in Planet of the Apes is also expected to fetch $60,000 on the auction block at the end of the month.

The two-day sale features over 1,000 iconic pieces of Hollywood history, also including The Creature From The Black Lagoon's mask, Harrison Ford's blaster From Blade Runner, and items from the collection of revered sci-fi and horror pioneer Forrest J. Ackerman's estate.

Worldwide bidding begins at noon, local time, on 30 April.

I think Fox will license their films out to whoever wants to show them.

By the way, I DVR'ed the Encore HD showing of PLANET. It's the same
transfer as the Blu-ray, only it was in 5.1 Dolby Digital, but was the
same audio as the Blu-ray's DTS HD Master Audio -- AND IT IS IN STEREO
SURROUND. Not the same mix as the 35th Anniversary DVD's Dolby Digital
5.1, but not mono by any means. Someday I'll replace my current A/V
receiver with one that decodes the new HD audio formats on Blu-ray, but
until then just listening to the PCM downmixes will have to do because
I do hear them in pretty good stereo surround. When I first got the
PLANET Blu-ray I had to use a receiver/decoder at my sister's house and
it apparently will only play the PCM downmix in mono, though it had no
problem with the APES sequel discs. Now I haven't checked this out --
and can't right at the moment, but I eventually bought PLANET as a
single release. I'm beginning to wonder if the PLANET disc in the box
set isn't screwed up and has HD audio that's supposed to be 5.1 but is
actually 1.0? Noooo, that couldn't happen, right?

An HD satellite or cable signal isn't as HD as a Blu-ray though --
there's lots of digital compression artifacts -- so the Blu-ray is
still the best way to view it. One thing did piss me off. The final
shot looked better on the HD satellite showing than it does on the=2
            0
            Blu-ray, where's it's too bright. I can't understand this other than
to say that the company Fox hired to put PLANET on Blu-ray didn't do
            the best job.

Anyway, it's nice to now have an HD transfer of PLANET recorded on my
DVR satellite box. It's much easier to assess than having to put the
Blu-ray disc in the machine and waiting for it to load and all that --
though the DVR recording is only for non-serious viewings.

This is a question I have wondered about for a while. Does anyone know
how the 'broadcast rights' are determined for movies like Apes? Right
now, the Encore networks are running the first film as part of the Sci
Fi marathon and one of the other Encore networks is running Escape as
just a regular listing. Some times, I believe that the Fox movie
network will run the films at the same time the Encore network does and
then you get networks like History and AMC that run them shortly
afterwards. Any thoughts? It seems strange that a movie like 'Mission
Impossible 2' is on TNT and TBS forever and now it shows up on Showtime
with a lot of other movies that came out in 2000 and 2001. Are there
cycles? Forgive me if I am not educated enought to know, but I am=2
            0
            curious. Thanks!

Not too happy, Al. That ABC HD broadcast of one of your favorite
            movies was an HD joke!

By the way, I didn't like that Movieplex thingy. They made fun of
            POTA. Too much monkeying around.

            Greetings from London, England.
I was intrigued by the "Sideshow versus Hasbro" figures photos on Hunter's Planet of the Apes Archives. Strange that Hasbro went to the trouble of putting hair on the figures, yet appeared to make little effort with the likenesses. Sideshow's hard moulded head wasn't as natural looking, but they sure got the likeness right. Has anyone gotten their hands on the good looking (but rather expensive) Hot Toys figures?
            The future is simian!
            Steve   :-)
