Some of the jokey dialogue seems kind of creaky to me now:

"He never met an ape he didn't like."

"You know what they say, human see, human do."

GROAN. Okay, we get it, we get it!

Of course that crap is balanced out by some of the best dialogue ever
written for ANY movie:

"Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!"

"Beware the beast man, for he is the devil's pawn."

"What are you afraid of, Doctor Zaius?"

Etc., etc., etc.

So, I guess those bad jokes are a very small price to pay for the gems
that we did get.

I really love looking at the artwork from foreign versions
of the original novel and the movies.

Although I have to laugh at the cover of the Italian version
of the original novel - right on the cover they blow the
ending. It would be like publishing a novel of Citizen
Kane and putting on the cover a sled with the name
"Rosebud" written on it.

No worries, on my part, David.

The internet was built on people misunderstanding people and seeing sarcasm where it doesn't exist. I appreciate the apology, as I'm sure everyone does. Always glad to welcome another fan to the world of Damn Dirty Apes.

I echo David regarding the kissing scene. That really wasn't that necessary. It should not have been mouth to mouth. Who knows where Taylor's mouth had been?

Yuck.

Based on your personal experience, collecting or knowledge
what would you say are the rarest POTA items ever made?
Lets stick to regular release products for USA and UK
(we will avoid oddball foreign language items for now)

When I did the POTA Memorabilia Price Guide in 1996
out of over 1000 items I listed the POTA rings as the most valuable
they were considered quite rare before the internet came along

What do you think is really the rarest stuff out there?
How about a top 5 list !!

Subject: Re: Can you think of any goofs in the first POTA film or any cheesy
.html
Even though the original is my favorite film, it's far from perfect.
Besides the spaceship's hatch already being blown off in the first shot
you see of the exterior, I wish you didn't also see the windows of the
ship being blown off too when the hatch finally is exploded. There's
also a corrugated aluminum cover of the prop ship that's blown up and
then later, as the astronauts exit the ship, it's lying off it's cover
and you can see into the interior of the prop. I guess this was done
because it was so hot on location and the temperature inside was
unbearable, but it would have been nice if Schaffner had been more
careful with his camera and not shown it.

Besides that, a major bug with me now is that I think they should have
made the Ape Town (Which is what it was originally called during
filming. "Ape City" is from a line of dialogue in BENEATH.) set a
little larger, used more forced perspective with smaller structures in
the distance with midgets dressed as apes on them, and not used the
obviously flat panel ape houses up on the hillsides, but instead
three-dimensional models. Of course, I never noticed any of this as a
kid, so in the movie's time it all worked beautifully, but now in the
age of the freeze-frame, these things fall apart -- but that's not the
movie's fault.

Any other faults? Plenty, but I'm not going to say.

The first film is so perfect that I wouldn't change anything except
maybe the shot of the ship showing the hatch blown before they blew the
hatch. But onther than that nothing.

Yeah, this is what Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide calls one of
PLANET's "liabilities" -- it's "self-conscious humor." However, it's
also one of the things that made the film such fun back in its day and
helped it be as popular as it was, but I agree that the film probably
should be more "adult" and had dropped this kind of stuff, including
the three wise monkey visual pun.

What I would say is THE rarest of the rare POTA items is that which is
mentioned in the PLANET pressbook: the "Radio Open-End Interviews" that
were put on record discs to be distributed to radio stations. I've
never heard of one of these ever popping up anywhere, though I do
believe that somewhere in the universe a copy still exists.

Years ago on eBay someone sold one of the PLANET 1-sheet Light Box
Displays. The story was that it had been stored in a neighborhood
theater's basement for thirty-something years. I think the theater was
in Washington state or somewhere. I can't remember what it sold for,
but I wasn't going to pay that much and I contacted the winning bidder
about it and he sent me photos of it after he got it, but I've since
lost them.

I've never seen anyone with a standee, and over thirty years ago a
movie poster dealer on Long Island told me about a floor display he had
back in '68 or '69 from PLANET that he said had a motor in it attached
to a cutout of those two gorillas holding Taylor down that was in the
corner of the display and rocked back and forth, BUT I've never heard
of any such thing since.

I have about 12 apes (mostly chimps) and one gorilla. I don't really collect, I customize them. The fun is in the crafting. Once it's done and photographed, they kind of get tossed together in various boxes/bins.

In Beneath The Planet we witnessed alot of surprising stuff. in my opinion.
We had a chance to see a few sides to the apes and humans. now looking back if you had to make connections between the apes chimps. gorillas. orangs.
and humans to todays political atmosphere how could you make connections .
I'll throw out an example: i look at the gorillas and i think of the G.O.P... simplistic in the way they govern by rank and strength. strong in thier faith in the law giver. willing to wage war in order to keep ape city fed and growing
I would then have to say that the way the chimps protest for peace strive to advance under an oppressive orangutan leadership.
libertarian in thier beliefs of science social dissatisfaction and leadership
orangutans are liberal in thier philosaphy they understand and know a truth that they willingly lie cheat and kill in order to keep safe and hidden as taylor soon found out.
the writers of batman 2 explained why they modeled bat 2 to the bush administration whare the hero turned villian in order to be a hero scenerio was derived.
what or how could you bring about connections
ps. this shouldnt be a right against left idea but more geo political. can you do it?

OK need some more help from all you knowledgeable collectors

I want to compile a list of all known POTA products from the promotion of the original film
So I only want items from 1967 1968 1969 on this list
This will be a complete list of all original 1960s items relating to POTA

Here are some obvious places to start

Magazines with articles or reviews of POTA (1968)
    Movie Posters
Promotional posters, lobby cards from 20th Century Fox

Are all the movie posters promotional only?  Or were there any marketed to the public to buy?

Does anyone know what year was the first printing of Boulle's book that actually referred to the Film ? or had a film picture on cover?

There is a trading card set - 44 cards - anyone know the actual release date of this set

POTA Soundtrack album with gatefold cover by Jerry Goldsmith

Were there any cups or anything early ?   or those are just later items with 1967 copyright on them??

Does "several thousand dollars" count for when I bought the license?

All kidding aside, I think I paid fifty dollars for the one-sheet movie poster for Beneath, when I was in my twenties, though I paid more to have it backed and framed (this was in the early eighties, though, when fifty bucks meant something!). I still have it, but the frame got broken when I moved, and it's currently stored in a closet...the spot on the wall has been replaced with an eight foot Fritz Lang Metropolis poster from the twenties that set me back five hundred bucks....and it's not even the metropolis poster you think it is! (Not the famous one with the robot, but an authentic German release poster, with a HUGE portrait of the scientist's daughter.)

      Ty

I paid about $400.00 for a binder of promo materials for the 2001 movie - it was pretty cool but later sold it at a loss
I bought most of the 2001 new products at wholesale prices - but still propably paid about $50.00 for some of the statues
I have owned approx 1000 of the marvel magazines - but dont think i ever paid more than $20.00 for any individually

2001 CINEFEX #87 / Oct-Nov-Dec / Inside the Planet of the apes: Visionary director Tim Burton put his own singular spin of Planet of the apes,, a remake of the 1968 classic, depicting evolution turned on its ear in a world where humans are subjugated by a superior race of apes. The production would boast a stellar team of effects contributors. Cementing his reputation as the undisputed master of simian simulation was makeup maestro Rick Baker, whose Cinovation Studio team would create fourteen principal ape characters, all distinct and different, plus hundreds of secondary and background players. Spearheading the postproduction visual effects, a blend of models, paintings and digital work, were visual effects supervisors Bill George and George Murphy of Industrial Light & Magic. A 6-sheet is 81"x81" It looks the same as the PLANET window card. I'm
actually not that crazy about it, and now think I was a little crazy to
      buy it.

      I also paid $900 for a linen-backed 3-sheet from PLANET. That poster
      is 41"x81"

I have the PLANET banner. I seem to recall I got that for $500.

OK, I have a mission for everyone here. Answer this poll question:
Which of these films do you think was the best to come out of 20th
      Century Fox?

      The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
      The Hustler (1961)
      The Longest Day (1962)
      The Sound of Music (1965)
      Planet of the Apes (1968)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
      M.A.S.H. (1970)
      The French Connection (1971)
      Star Wars (1977)
      Alien (1979)

To answer go to this link: http://cinematreasures.org/polls/312/

You'll probably have to create an account to vote in the poll, but
      please do AND VOTE PLANET!!!!

I only ask because "Star Wars" is the winner right now -- and that
      sucks!

And you could bring food in the movies in those days-I brought lunch, dinner and snacks to tide me over!

Wow...that blows away the $30 I paid for the fourth TV series novelization!

The rarest set I have ever seen was a TreeHouse GIFT SET with the 5 figures pictured on the box outside and included inside plastic mego baggies. I sold it 10 years ago for $1500.00. I almost wish I had not sold it for so cheap.

      2) I have a near mint sealed Village that I am happy about along with a MINT sealed Burke.

      3) I have Palitoy custom cards & bubbles that I have carded my Virdon & Burke on.

I am gearing toward 1/6 scale custom Ape TV show stuff.

      Thanks for the memories
