Wow...that blows away the $30 I paid for the fourth TV series novelization!

.htmlThe novel Planet of the Apes #4: Lord of the Apes. I looked EVERYWHERE for this several years ago, but only found a few copies, and each for a lot of money. Eventually, I found a good copy for $30. I think that might be the most I've ever paid for a novel.

.htmlOh, I see. I thought you got the RIGHTS to it for thirty bucks. I've routinely paid that much for some rare old books...many of my Doc Savage, Shadow and John Carter original editions have set me back more than fifty dollars a pop, and don't even ask what my Golden Age issues of Captain America and Batman cost me, you won't be happy. I remember a friend of mine paid a hundred dollars for a first official copy of ASTOUNDING Science Fiction (I think it's the August '33 copy that's considered the first official issue, but I might be wrong.) back in the seventies and I thought he'd lost his mind.
Most I ever paid for a single comic was a few hundred dollars for Avengers #1, some time in the late seventies. The same issue is currently worth about six thousand in the condition mine is in. ty

.html I've been digging through back issues of the "New York Times" and "The
Los Angeles Times" and I think I've come up with the answer: June 12, 1973.
"Battle" premiered in NYC on Friday, July 13, 1973, but it opened in Los
Angeles one month earlier, on Wednesday, June 13! Who knew?
On Sunday, June 10 (see attached PDF), there was a big ad in the LA
Times explaining what was going to happen. On Tuesday, June 12, they
would show all four previous films, followed by "the newest and biggest
epic of them all" at 8:30 PM.
Seeing as how it wouldn't open in New York for another month (and hadn't
even officially opened in LA yet), I can't imagine an earlier "all five
films marathon" than June 12, 1973.

Terry as far as I know there were six different versions of the Play
Set...... ranging from the mail away set that came in a brown cardboard box
(first pic) that had just Zira and Cornelius, a couple of gorillas and
horses....
to the deluxe version in the blue box.....that had many
figures plus jeeps and mountains... . here's the six different
versions.... .
It
would be great to find out the specific contents of each one

I've always wanted to read the John Carter novels, but haven't had
the time to do so. Apparently, there's a John Carter film coming out:

Very cool! The LEAST I ever paid for a comic that is worth the MOST
is Gold Key's Star Trek #1. At the time that I bought it--the late
1980s--that issue was very hard to come by. It was in the
pre-widespread-Internet-use days, and way before eBay, so dealers
were routinely asking for anywhere from $600 to $1,000. That was 20
years ag0, so I have no idea what it's worth now. But I bought it
for...a dime. It was one of those situations every fan dreams of--it
was the last issue I needed to complete the set, and I found it in a
dime box at a yard sale.

Nice! I don't know the most I ever paid for a single comic, but I
did spend about $1,500 over a five-year period or so, tracking down
all 256 issues of the British Star Trek comic strip, published in Joe
90, TV21 and Valiant from 1969 to 1973, along with all associated
annuals. That was quite a feat, given that I'm in the United States,
these strips were never published outside the United Kingdom, and
this was also in the pre-Internet period. (That's why it took
several years. These days, it wouldn't take nearly as much time or
money to do it, I'm sure.) <.html

I happen to have the first few dozen Gold Key Treks, and 12 cents was what my eldest brother paid for them, but they've been in the family since they came out. I've also got the much harder to find Gold Key "Captain's Logs" collections, which I've never even seen other than the copies in my possession.
What's the difference in the British Trek strips? Are they unique to England? I'm not sure I know about them.... NOW I pimp myself a bit: Are you reading Star Trek Mission's End from IDW at the moment?

I've been digging through back issues of the "New York Times" and "The
Los Angeles Times" and I think I've come up with the answer: June 12, 1973.

The cards were released sometime in 1968. I remember because we collected them before seeing the film that summer. Don't know the exact date though.

Most of the later merchandising shows the 1967 copyright date since that copyright was still in effect even though most of the items were produced several years later. Unfortunately many of the sellers on Ebay don't know the differences between the films or TV series.

The production would boast a stellar team of effects contributors. On Staten Island, PARAMOUNT theater, that's were I saw all the films when they brought them back for the GO APE promotion but it was on June 22, my birthday. What a great "B" present that was.

However, my trading card collection which includes the original 1968 set, the 1974 TV series set, the 1998 Archives set (all with original wrappers) and the two Rittenhouse sets in the Archives binder is probably worth a few hundred dollars.

1973 in LA -- the first POTA marathon.
You know, I always think of the sequels as June movies. I rarely watch
them outside of June, and in fact, wish the Blu-ray were just coming
out now instead of last November.

[Attachment(s) from Scott Raile included below]
I've been digging through back issues of the "New York Times" and "The
Los Angeles Times" and I think I've come up with the answer: June 12,
1973.
"Battle" premiered in NYC on Friday, July 13, 1973, but it opened in
Los
Angeles one month earlier, on Wednesday, June 13! Who knew?
On Sunday, June 10 (see attached PDF), there was a big ad in the LA
Times explaining what was going to happen. On Tuesday, June 12, they
would show all four previous films, followed by "the newest and biggest
epic of them all" at 8:30 PM.
Seeing as how it wouldn't open in New York for another month (and
hadn't
even officially opened in LA yet), I can't imagine an earlier "all five
films marathon" than June 12, 1973.

I was going through a box of stuff today. In
it was a stack of posters, 1 sheets, 1/2 sheets and other stuff. My
friend, in high school, used to bug 1 theater owner for posters. He
was a
crabby old man who owned 3 theaters. He gave Greg a bunch of stuff one
day. Greg took what he wanted and gave me the leftovers. I started
to go through them and found Mary Poppins, Nashville, and others. I
never
finished going through them. That was back in 1978. I just found a
few treasures in it, 30 years later. 2 "Future News" newspapers with
the
headline "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes-Governor seized in Revolt
of the
Apes." A 20th Century Fox Pressbook for Conquest, and a pressbook for
GO APE! (Something was cut out of the back of the Go Ape
pressbook) AND a 1 sheet Double bill20poster for Planet and Beneath
from
1971. OH MY GOD!!!! I'm so excited! They are
all very brittle on the folds.

I saw the PLANET/BENEATH "Two Apes For The Price Of One" Double-Feature
in October of 1971 in a theatre in upstate New York.
There was a poster created for it and a pressbook (might be on Hunter's
site), though I seem to be the only person here who went to this.

I always lived vicariously through people and their ape costumes, but I decided life is too short and why not? Now I can't wait to get my ape on again. Hoping to find some locals to go ape with...but usually I am the only ape in town which is kind of sad.

.html Hi, folks,
Is anyone here from San Francisco? I was hoping someone who knows
that city might be able to help me. In the episode "The Trap," Burke
and Urko end up in a Bay Area Rapid Transit station. On the wall is
a sign reading "Exit to Sutter St." Does this correspond to any
actual BART subway system? Is there a Sutter St. stop? I read
online that someone thought it was the Embarcadero station, but if
that's the case, why does the wall say "Exit to Sutter St.?" If
anyone has an explanation for this, I'd be most grateful. Thanks in advance!

Some dorky questions:
* Has anyone ever managed to read the paperwork sitting on Prefect
Barlow's desk in "The Gladiators?" If so, what does it say?
* In "The Trap," can anyone decipher what the organ-replacement
poster says on the bottom line? The second word is "Clinic." Can
anyone figure out what the first word is? Is it "Elrad?"
* Also in "The Trap," can anyone make out the name of the company at
the bottom of the disposable clothing poster? There are three words,
the second and third of which are "Stores" and "Inc." Can anyone
read the first word? Is it "Stanley?"
Thanks!

you can share with us right away. And represent!!! I always lived

The Closest BART station to Sutter is the Montgomery station downtown.
It is only a short block away from Sutter and is really the only
plausible one that can be called "Sutter" station as none of the other
stations go anywhere near it.
You can see a map of Montgomery station and clearly see Sutter right
on the map:
http://www.bart.gov/stations/mont/index.aspx
As it so happens, both times I was down I was only blocks away from
the Montgomery. I took pictures the first time I was down of the
exterior of the station, which of course looks nothing like the
exterior shots in the episode. The last time I was down, just 6 weeks
ago, I even got on the BART right at Montgomery. I took pictures of
the station and train.

Michael, there was a gay-owned bakery in San Francisco years ago. Don't know if they exist..but it used to make me smile. They were called Sticky Buns Bakery. :)

It is only a short block away from Sutter and is really the only plausible one that can be called "Sutter" station as none of the other stations go anywhere near it. You can see a map of Montgomery station and clearly see Sutter right

.htmlInteresting. Do you know what paper that is from? It looks like either the Daily News or the Post.
Also, it seems to be in very few theaters. I guess the term wide release had a different meaning in those days. I did read that the reason for 'roadshow' releases was because the studios would only make a limited number of prints so they would have to rotate them between theaters and markets.

Yes we showed some of John Byrnes artwork way
back in Ape Chronicles #20 I believe
That was in about 1995
Issues still available if anyone is
interested
I think John Byrne DID do some Apes back in the 70s---he did some
proposal sketches for Marvel.I think they're featured in an issue of Ape
Chronicles.Rico Rival,Mike Ploog and Herb Trimpe are still alive and it
would be cool to see them do a few pages. As for 'modern' artists, I'd kill
to see somebody like Alex Nino or Tim Conrad do some Apes. And Bob Larkin has
done painted strips before. For me, however, the dream artist would be John
Bolton. John, Scrolls. > > Yeah, Steve Ditko APES! >
