Yes we showed some of John Byrnes artwork way back in Ape Chronicles #20 I believe
That was in about 1995
Issues still available if anyone is interested
I think John Byrne DID do some Apes back in the 70s---he did some proposal sketches for Marvel.I think they're featured in an issue of Ape Chronicles.Rico Rival,Mike Ploog and Herb Trimpe are still alive and it would be cool to see them do a few pages. As for 'modern' artists, I'd kill to see somebody like Alex Nino or Tim Conrad do some Apes. And Bob Larkin has done painted strips before. For me, however, the dream artist would be John Bolton. John, Scrolls.

No news on the POTA reboot "Caesar" but this
is kind of a progress report. Scott Frank, the dude who was writing and
directing "Caesar", got pulled off that project to write a script for Tom Cruise
and Cameron Diaz called "Witchita" (about the dating life of a secret agent).
Fox hoped the two stars would choose this of the many projects they have going,
and it worked. Fox has announced that His Majesty and Her Royal Highness have
picked "Witchita" as their next project, to be released in 2010. Way to go,
Scott! The question is, will he be on that project for a while
fine-tuning or will he now go back to "Caesar" (a script I've heard is not
finished yet).
Meanwhile, on the heels of Fox's
announcement that "Predator" will be rebooted, the rumor is that "Alien" will
also be revisited (an origin story, like "Caesar"). Fox's process now seems to
be matching up a new director (like Scott Frank on "Caesar") with an old pro as
producer. "Predators" has Robert Rodriguez, and the word is original "Alien"
director Ridley Scott will produce the new "Alien" with Carl Rinsch directing
(he's done commercials and music videos and has worked with Ridley before). So
if Fox wants to match up Scott Frank with James Cameron on "Caesar", be my
guest. <.html <.html

James Mangold is directing and Laeta
Kalogridis is fine-tuning "Wichita". Scott Frank has a revolution of apes to
lead.

Flanigan, Helfer Guest on Warehouse 13
by Cynthia on May 28th, 2009
It's
going to be an all-star scifi summer on SCI FI Channel when some of
your favorite stars pop up on the new dramedy adventure Warehouse 13.
Top of the list, Stargate Atlantis' Joe Flanigan, Tricia Helfer from
Battlestar Galactica, and one of my personal faves, James Naughton who
starred in the Planet of the Apes TV series, but is more commonly known
for his role on Gossip Girl.
Warehouse 13 is the story of two Secret Service
agents who are assigned to guard a massive, top-secret storage facility
in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact,
mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever
collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse's caretaker Artie (Saul
Rubinek) charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanna Kelly) with
chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search
of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to
control the warehouse itself.
Guest Stars Include:
Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan, Charmed) is "Ross" an
EMT from Unionville, New York. Ross and some of the other townspeople
begin to display bizarre behavioral symptoms — involuntary (and
potentially dangerous) expressions of their subconscious desires.
Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice)
stars as FBI Agent "Bonnie Belski" who clashes with Pete and Myka when
they interfere with a case on her Chicago turf. But after the third
inexplicable bank takeover, she finds herself willing to make use of
their expertise.
Joe Flanigan (Stargate
Atlantis, First Monday) portrays the handsome, wealthy "Jeff Weaver"
whose charm captures Myka's interest, but he finds himself under Pete
and Myka's scrutiny when a sculpture on which he bid, vanishes in an
impossible heist.
James Naughton (Ally McBeal, Gossip Girl) is
"Gilbert Radburn," the well-tailored, Trump-esque high-profile
entrepreneur. When a competitor threatens his intended acquisition,
Radburn's suspicious behavior brings him under Pete and Myka's scrutiny.
Roger Rees
(Cheers, The West Wing) is "MacPherson" one of Artie's former Warehouse
colleagues, who has gone rogue and is now competing with the team to
gather dangerous and powerful objects for his own use.
Erica Cerra
(Eureka, The L Word) and Niall Matter (Eureka, The Best Years) portray
"Jillian and Gary Whitman," small-time thieves on the Las Vegas strip,
whose fortunes, twisted by the strange power of luck-inducing artifact,
take a fantastic turn.
Joe Morton (Eureka, Terminator 2) stars as "John Hill" a charismatic prison inmate and an extremist religious leader in a Florida prison.
Mark Sheppard (24, Battlestar Galactica) is "Mr.
Valda" the enigmatic representative of the Regents, the mysterious
organization that controls Warehouse 13. He disapproves of Artie's
methods as the team leader of the Warehouse, and isn't afraid to let
him know it.
Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica, The L Word)
portrays Myka's father "Warren Bering," who receives a dangerous object
anonymously in the mail which puts his life in jeopardy.
Warehouse 13 will premiere Tuesday, July 7 with the 2-hour pilot from 9 - 11PM ET/PT.

.html Mort Abrahams, the retired TV and movie producer, who produced the original "Planet of the Apes," (and, I think, two of the others) passed away in his Studio City home on May 28, 2009. I know this because I am his daughter-in-law, and his widow just telephoned me. He died early this morning, with his daughter and his wife at his bedside. He had been ill for some time, and his death was not unexpected.
As well--and more importantly, from my point of view--as being an accomplished producer and later a mentor to younger talent when he was at the American Film Institute, Mort was a warm, gentle, loving man. He was patient and giving with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would play countless card games with them, sometimes putting on funny accents. He had an endless supply of amazing anecdotes about life in the business. His wife, his daughter, and his son (my late husband) had all heard these stories, but my daughter and I were always enthralled. Above all, he had a sweetness to him, a vulnerability, that was to me his defining trait. I shall miss him so much!
Mr. Abrahams' body is to be cremated, and there will be no public memorial service, as per his wishes. He is survived by his wife and daughter, son- and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son just over a year ago. <.html

Mort was not interested in becoming Internet-savvy. His family bought him one of the early iMacs, but he just couldn't get into it. It frustrated his son and me, because we used email a lot.
He did get a chuckle when, several years ago, we printed up a slew of stuff about POTA and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. from the web to show to him. We in fact bought quite a bit of Tom Corbett, Space Cadet and Man from U.N.C.L.E. stuff via Ebay for ourselves.

Yeah, Mort really was the nuts and bolts of
the first two "Apes". Arthur couldn't travel to location because of his health,
and Mort deserves just as much credit for not taking no for an answer from Fox.

Yeah, Mort really was the nuts and bolts of
the first two "Apes". Arthur couldn't travel to location because of his health,
and Mort deserves just as much credit for not taking no for an answer from Fox.

I'm very sorry to hear that yet another "name" from the world of POTA
has passed away. There's getting to be very few left.
Mort Abrahams
also produced several episodes of "The Man from UNCLE,"
another part of my
childhood.

Mort Abrahams, the retired TV and movie producer, who
produced the
original "Planet of the Apes," (and, I think, two of the
others) passed
away in his Studio City home on May 28, 2009. I know this
because I am
his daughter-in- law, and his widow just telephoned me.
He died early
this morning, with his daughter and his wife at his bedside.
He had
been ill for some time, and his death was not unexpected.
As
well--and more importantly, from my point of view--as being an
accomplished producer and later a mentor to younger talent when he was
at the American Film Institute, Mort was a warm, gentle, loving man. He
was patient and giving with his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren .
He would play countless card games with them,
sometimes putting on
funny accents. He had an endless supply of amazing
anecdotes about life
in the business. His wife, his d
aughter, and his
son (my late husband)
had all heard these stories, but my daughter and I
were alw
ays
enthralled. Above all, he had a sweetness to him, a
vulnerability, that
was to me his defining trait. I shall miss him so
much!
Mr. Abrahams' body is to be cremated, and there will be no public
memorial service, as per his wishes. He is survived by his wife and
daughter, son- and daughter-in- law, two grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren . He was preceded in death by his son just over a
year ago.

I see you're using the

Here's one for everybody.
Which Makeup look do you like best, & why?
For me? Hair from Planet & Makeup from Escape.
I went to Baycon today and got my ape on. Here
is a photo someone took of me on an elevator with their cell phone. I
have put in about 40 hours or more into this wig I am wearing. I think
it's still too poufy, but it's way better than the last time.

Once again, nothing to do with "Caesar" but
everything to do with it. There's confirmation that Fox is doing a prequel
reboot of "Alien". Tony Scott confirmed that he and his brother Ridley are
producing it. Ridley Scott, of course, directed the original. So it's kind of a
George Lucas thing. If it's going to be ruined at least it will be ruined by the
originator. Or has it already been ruined by previous sequels? Or will it
actually be OK?
Anyway, they seem to be taking the same
route with "Caesar", a prequel. And that was before "Star Trek" made it
mandatory.
Oh, and Phil Spector got 19

I saw it. A decent panel about the first POTA
with Verne Langdon as moderator (he worked on the first in the makeup lab);
Dan Striepeke, he ran the Fox makeup dept. during the movies, etc. Two Oscar
noms for "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Ryan's Privates", was Tom Hank's go -to
makeup guy; Lou Wagner, who played Lucius and returned as the busboy in
"Conquest"; and Tom Burman, who was an apprentice at the time and has since
earned his stripes.
No taping or pictures was allowed at the
panel, nah! nah! nah!
Anyway, they went over pretty common stuff
but did it with flair. I liked how they imitated John Chambers' grumpiness. They
talked about the challenge of the makeup task, Streipeke said it was the most
makeups ever at the time for one production. He was the head of the Fox makeup
dept. but he still had to roll up his sleeves; he worked on the hair and wigs.
They gave special props to the late
Josephine Turner, who worked on the wigs. And of course they praised Franklin
Schaffner for taking "the high road" and making a movie they knew was good but
didn't know would stay this accomplished. Wagner noted the social commentary,
touchy in the '60's. They remembered the first day of developing the makeup,
they found the original mask David Hedison wore in "The Fly" and Chambers said
to "throw it out." They needed all the makeup people they could find. Burman
said they used everyone on "the list" and Wagner replied, "They had to create a
new list". Wagner remembered having to eat with chopsticks and that the first
day on location, the real star, the makeup plane, hadn't arrived.
Wagner and Langdon were in a band together
in college yet he didn't recognize Wagner in the makeup (made a joke that
Shelley Winters could hide under the makeup but he knew Wagner wasn't Shelley
Winters because he was slightly smaller).
Someone asked about makeup they'd seen for a
female gorilla and Langdon said the female gorillas were just tests, they
weren't planned for the movie. Someone brought up Bill Blake and Streipeke
called him an "extraordinary makeup artist". Elaine Dietz from the TV show (the
older sis in "The Good Seeds") was at the show selling her "Exorcist" wares and
dropped in to say hi to the panel.
That's about all I recall, except they had a
slideshow going during the panel and there were some cool pictures I hadn't
seen. Don't know how to describe them, except like "Heston eating lunch",
"Zanuck on the publicity shot set", "an ape on Hollywood Blvd." , etc. Stuff I
hadn't seen but maybe the "photo fiends" have.
There were some other non-Ape, makeup
related presentations, and a terrific display of creature makeup (including an
awesome "Jaws"). They had Forry Ackerman's life mask when he was 26 and when he
was 90. The show was kind of geared to the budding makeup artists and horror
fans, with a section on makeup materials to buy. There were horror celebs (the
guy who played Jason, etc.)
The hard sell of cons is depressing, and
it's hard to even say hi to a celeb without feeling guilty for not buying
something. So after the panel I left, because there was no one to hold me there.
Though I did get Streipeke and Dietz to sign my Eric Greene book, which is ready
to be bronzed.

I just remembered something Tom Burman mentioned
about the look of the apes. As already known, the studios heads thought
that "realistic" apes were too ugly. They wanted something that "the
audience could relate to and have compassion for." Tom was working on a
sculpture in a back room. After the execs nixed John Chambers' sculpts,
they were leaving and saw Tom's sculpt. That was the look they
liked. He said he wasn't real good at sculpting, back then and it was way
too human. John was upset and banned him from the lab for a week.
But, they needed him badly, so he was allowed to come back. Dan, John, and
Tom decided that the fact that the apes had evolved was the answer to why they
looked the way they did.

Dietz was Jillia in "The Good Seeds". But I
guess best known for "The Exorcist" where she was Linda Blair's double, who they
tested the makeups on and who did the stunts and is the white face of the demon
Pazuzu. Her experience wearing makeup led to the POTA role.
I enjoyed talking to her, she's a character.
She reminds me of Margot Kidder (who was also at Monsterpalooza). For those
who want to see what "Jillia" is up to, she has a good website:
Meeting her inspired me to rewatch the
excellent "Exorcist" doc "Fear of God" on the old DVD. In it they talk about how
Lalo Schiffrin was hired to compose the music for the film but the director was
so offended by what he came up with, thought it was obvious, commercial crap,
that he literally fired him on the spot in front of everybody, including Lalo's
family. He took the music reels and threw them out the window to the parking lot
across the street! Then they used music that was already written, the
effective "Tubular Bells". Of course, soon after, maybe a year or so, Schiffrin
did the POTA TV show theme. The doc also has lots of footage of Eileen testing
the makeup, spitting pea soup, etc. She continues to work in horror, she's
in the upcoming sequel to the remake of "Halloween", "H2". When's the
remake of "The Exorcist"? <.html <.html

They gave special props to the late
Josephine Turner, who worked on the wigs. And of course they praised
Franklin
Schaffner for taking "the high road" and making a movie th
ey knew was
good but
didn't know would stay this accomplished. Wagner noted the social
commentary,
touchy in the '60's. They remembered the first day of developing the
makeup,
they found the original mask David Hedison wore in "The Fly" and
Chambers said
to "throw it out." They needed all the makeup people they could find.
Burman
said they used everyone on "the list" and Wagner replied, "They had to
create a
new list". Wagner remembered having to eat with chopsticks and that the
first
day on location, the real star, the makeup plane, hadn't arrived.
Wagner and Langdon were in a band together
in college yet he didn't recognize Wagner in the makeup (made a joke
that
Shelley Winters could hide under the makeup but he knew Wagner wasn't
Shelley
Winters because he was slightly smaller).
Someone asked about makeup they'd seen for a
female gorilla and Langdon said the female gorillas were just tests,
they
weren't planned for the movie. Someone brought up Bill Blake and
Streipeke
called him an "extraordinary makeup artist". Elaine Dietz from the TV
show (the
older sis in "The Good Seeds") was at the show selling her "Exorcist"
wares and
dropped in to say hi to the panel.
That's about all I recall, except they had a
slideshow going during the panel and there were some cool pictures I
hadn't
seen. Don't know how to describe them, except like "Heston eating
lunch",
"Zanuck on
the publicity shot set", "an ape on Hollywood Blvd." , etc.
Stuff I
hadn't seen but maybe the "photo fiends" have.
There were some other non-Ape, makeup
related presentations, and a terrific display of creature makeup
(including an
awesome "Jaws"). They had Forry Ackerman's life mask when he was 26 and
when he
was 90. The show was kind of geared to the budding makeup artists and
horror
fans, with a section on makeup materials to buy. There were horror
celebs (the
guy who played Jason, etc.)
The hard sell of cons is depressing, and
it's hard to even say hi to a celeb without feeling guilty for not
buying
something. So after the panel I left, because there was no one to hold
me there.
Though I did get Streipeke and Dietz to sign my Eric Greene book, which
is ready
to be bronzed.

I, too just got back from there. I spent
about 30 mins talking to Eileen Dietz about Pota andd Exorcist. She

very pleasant. Talked to Lou Wagner for a bit. Someone on here or

I saw it. A decent panel about the first
POTA with Verne Langdon as moderator (he worked on the first in the
makeup lab); Dan
Striepeke, he ran the Fox makeup dept. during the
movies,
etc. Two Oscar noms for "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Ryan's Privates",
was Tom
Hank's go -to makeup guy; Lou Wagner, who played Lucius and returned
as the
busboy in "Conquest"; and Tom Burman, who was an apprentice at the
time and
has since earned his stripes.
No taping or pictures was allowed at the
panel, nah! nah! nah!
Anyway, they went over pretty common stuff
but did it with flair. I liked how they imitated John Chambers'
grumpiness.
They talked about the challenge of the makeup task, Streipeke said it
was the
most makeups ever at the time for one production. He was the head of
the Fox
makeup dept. but he still had to roll up his sleeves; he worked on
the hair
and wigs.

What's shown in that pic is a bank. There was also a Dr. Zaius one
just like it. I have the Zaius one, but years ago I cut a hole in the
back so I could put a night lite size bulb from a Christmas decoration
making it into a lamp. It looks great lit-up. I still have it in my

.htmlThe movie was spectacular, it was great to see it again on the big screen. It was more clear than I remember it from 10 years ago for the 30th anniversary. There were some flickers and scratches, just what you get when watching an old movie. The audience was also great--no hecklers and everyone was there to see and enjoy the movie. The theater was an old theater that had been revamped. The screen was not that big, so even if you sat at the very front rows, you didn't get nauseated. We missed the first 15 minutes due to an accident and all the rubber-neckers, so we didn't have a chance to schmooze before the film began. I forgot to take a photo of the apes on screen. Darn! Next time...
I messed up on the makeup, but then again, I was just so tired of all the negative energy at home for my creativity. Kinda wears you down. But, I am a die hard fan, so no matter what, my ape projects will go on. I think my family is just shocked that I've taken it this far. This was just a minor skirmish at the front lines. I will retreat and recover but come back with a vengeance.
