Nah all of it, most of it was filmed in the Peak
District which for me is 15 mins from my mums.
The stepping stones over the river are a real
attraction but not beause of the film, though haven't been in
years.
It's suposed to be in the Lake District I think if
memory serves me right, but is actually filmed in the Peak District in
Derbyshire, not Cumbria.

What's interesting is the POTA TV series was a big
hit in the UK in the '70s. Maybe because there was so much SF on TV there the
audience was more open to something like the POTA TV series than audiences in
the US.

New, old, it's still neat to see a series that in theory you would find at a pota comic book store, shocking for its portrayal of intelligent, clothed humans. Just good fun.

Thanks for that, must have been repeats I saw late
70's as I was too young to see the first broadcast. The thing is that Planet was
always around in the 70's in the UK and the series perhaps more than the films
for me in the UK.

This sucks. The Motion Picture Home and

ordeal of being moved out.
I have great memories of visiting John
Chambers here. This is where they filmed his birthday tribute. It was one of
Roddy's fave charities and where he donated his Caesar statue.
Although it's still not clear how far
they're going with this. Sounds like they're closing the hospital but
not the home or the gardens with the Caesar statue, but still, they're uprooting
100 + residents. Actress Diane Ladd is the spokesperson for a group to bring
attention to this.
Since 2005 they've been having a $ 10 million
shortfall each year. Considering how much some people rake in in Hollywood it
would seem like something could be done.

after The Hangover and Up, doing barely half of Up's business. How the rest of
the weekend shakes out remains to be seen but this has to be a bad sign for a
film that was meant to be a major tentpole for Universal this summer.
<<
Actually, I just saw it for the second time last night. A lot of
people seemed to have completely missed the point of the film. It's a send
up of the original series much the same way the old Batman TV series
with Adam West is a send up of the Batman comic books. In both instances,
tongue is planted firmly in cheek, and everyone involved is just having some fun
with it. Additionally, Sid and Marty Kroft- the producers of the original-
produced this film as well. If they thought it was "disrespectful to the source
material" (which is the comment/complaint I've seen most frequently), they
wouldn't have OK'd it in the first place.
AND LET'S NOT FORGET that the
original was a cheesy, low budget, live action 70's Saturday morning cartoon. I
watched it when it was on, I enjoyed it and in fact still think very highly of
it. There was both good story telling with each episode and an
ongoing narrative over the entire series (similar- in fact to what RETURN
TO THE PLANET OF THE APES did), but it's not exactly Shakespeare
either.
The new film draws it's humor from the way the different ways
each of the three main characters react to their new surroundings. The fact that
three years later, lost in another dimension, and missing the device to return
home, Rick Marshall's first reaction to his new environment is "Matt Lauer can
suck it!!" is funny, but in a very sublime sort of way. Ditto for the idea of
Grumpy having a personal vendetta against Marshall only and no one else. These
are just a few examples mind you, and if you haven't seen the film chances are
you're going to be thinking "Well, what's so funny about that?". All I can tell
you is that in context, it's both funny and entertaining. Unfortunately, it
seems as if a lot of people have forgotten how to go to a movie and
simply have fun with it. Every single summer movie doesn't have to be 'The Dark
Knight'.

Yeah, but commercially successful doesn't necessarily translate into good.
Vanilla Ice's debut album sold 11 million copies, and by the logic of success =

Batman teamed up with Kamandi (spelling?) to aid the tigers in their fight against supergorilla Grodd and his legions. Some nice quotes like "The only good ape is a dead ape" and "Get your filthy paws off of him" showed that the writer knew how to satisfy some true Sci Fi fans! <.html

Can you

I have
already told you privately that you were wrong to use a personal email reply as
an 'article' without informing me what it would be used for or even asking me if
you could use it as such.
I just want to
make it clear to anyone thinking of buying the magazine that I did not write an
'article' about this comic. I just replied to a question about it, asked by Mr.
Hoknes in a personal email, without any research or checking of facts on my
part. It was never intended to be an article and I certainly never gave my
permission for it to be used as such.

Nope. Dehn continued the story that had already been established.
Abrams dumbed down/rebooted an existing story for mass
consumption- similar to a layer cake being completely made up of
icing. Kind of like what Burton did in 2001 actually. So everything from
that movie and the related comic books/paperbacks can be said to take place in
the "Burtonverse". :-)

>>Using the "500 years from slavery to rebellion" always falls apart
for me. The audience never witnesses these events. The characters who
relate them, Cornelius & Zira, didn't witness them either. The source for
C&Z was the Sacred Scrolls written by the Lawgiver and since he
presumably didn't live for 500 years he didn't witness them either. He was
most likely recording a history that had been passed down and
possibly distorted through the centuries. So there no direct conclusive
evidence that the "500 years from slavery to rebellion" happened exactly
as related. It is hearsay of hearsay of hearsay of hearsay. <<
>>On top of that it contradicts what had been established in the
first two films <<
In what way?
>>as well as Cornelius' earlier statement in Escape that the
Apes had been speaking English for 2,000 years. <<
But we know that they were both lying to the Commission about certain
things, so fabricating the length of how long the apes were using English isn't
much of a stretch.
Truthfully, there's much more that's been established in the
film/television series that actually supports Zira's explanation of
events. Just because the audience doesn't witness them doesn't mean they didn't
happen. The audience didn't witness the nuclear war either but takes that as
fact. HOWEVER, if you start referring to things that were neither shown or
referred to in the films/TV series (i.e. "How do we know that there WASN'T
a mothership") and using the logic that just because we didn't see it we can't
be sure and it has to be considered as a possibility, then it devolves
very quickly into everyone rewriting the stories to support their version of
what happened.
Chris L.
who originally wrote:
>>I believe that Cornelius & Zira's arrival brought about
the alternate timeline. For example, instead of the 500 years from slavery to
rebellion that Zira mentions, it now takes place in (I think) seven.
CONQUEST was set in 1991, so subtract the year (1983? 1984?) on the cat
& dog statue that Armando shows Caesar and that's how long it took. He also
implies genetic engineering, which could have had something to do with Cornelius
& Zira as well. I'm sure that their physiology was thoroughly studied after
they were murdered. <<<.html

It was originally aired around 7-25 on Sunday evenings right after the religious slot ('Stars on Sunday' anyone?).
I'm not sure of the precise date but the UK wasn't too far behind the US transmissions. I believe we (UK) got the news it had been axed about mid way through the run.

No it was called the "Smiths Arms" in Staveley,
Chesterfield.
Sadly now boarded up ready for demolition for
housing I would imagine, which I must admit makes me quite sad.

Both Planet and Beneath present that Human civilization destroyed itself via nuclear war in the 20th Century, not the 25th. The Human remains in the cave and the doll are 2,000 years old, not 1,500. All the ruins seen in Beneath are from the 20th Century. Taylor even refers to the bomb as a souvenir from the 20th Century. > > > >>as well as Cornelius' earlier statement in Escape that the Apes > had been speaking English for 2,000 years. << > > But we know that they were both lying to the Commission about certain > things, so fabricating the length of how long the apes were using English > isn't much of a stretch.
All the lies they told were lies of omission so this doesn't really qualify. Some have contended that they were lying about the 500 year time frame thinking the government would think of them as less of a threat if the time frame was less immediate. Both are wrong.
The lies C&Z told were clearly identified for the audience. If either was said as a lie the characters would have delieved the lines a certain way. If it was an element of the story that they had lied in either case, there would have been some indication of it to let the audience know.
> > Truthfully, there's much more that's been established in the > film/television series that actually supports Zira's explanation of > events.
Really? What exactly in the film series supports it?
> Just because the audience doesn't witness them doesn't mean they > didn't happen.
Nor does it mean it happened exactly as related. My point is is that because the audience nor the characters who releated those events witnessed them, that leaves the door open for many other explainations to the continuity error and thus cannot be used to definitively establish that C&Z created an alternate timeline. Especially when there is much evidence to the contrary
> The audience didn't witness the nuclear war either but > takes that as fact.
Except that many of the characters who refer to it actually witnessed the event and the

Exactly my point. If something is an element of the story it is clearly stated and established. Just because something is not said to have not existed doesn't mean it does. Thus, since it is never clearly stated or established that C&Z created an alternate timeline in any of the films, it does not exist. While it is a clever way to explain C&Z's 500 year time frame, an altered timeline is still not an element of the story since it is never clearly stated that it is. A case can be made that Caesar's actions in Battle created an altered timeline (which is discussed in that film), but not that it was created before. So using the 500 time frame as the basis for establishing that C&Z created an alternate time line is just an extrapolation based on a continuity error that can have many other explanations.

I'm glad you are
happy with your copies of Chronicles John, out of interest though does issue #46
still contain the 'article' on the Chanoc comic attributed to
me?

.html
.html
I have been away for the weekend and wanted to
publicly address some questions and issues from Neil Foster
I wrote Neil earlier this year for some information
on a POTA Mexican magazine which he had. He
gave me the information about it in an email
I used his information and put it in a one page
article in Ape Chronicles #46
Since all the information came from I gave him
credit for writing the article
I made mistakes and bad judgement though
because
a) I did not clearly tell Neil I was going to use
his information for an article
b) I did not tell him he was getting credit for the
article
c) I never showed him the article so he was unaware
of it before it was actually printed
Neil asked me to entirely remove the article from
the issue and any references to it.
Meanwhile Graham Hill was not happy with the
presentation of his cover artwork for #46 so we revised the cover.
I had recieved a few advance orders of #46 - and
they had already shipped over a week ago. So there are a few copies
out there with Neil's article and Graham's original cover.
I have revised the cover artwork with Graham and
totally removed Neil's article
I am apologing for this mistake and bad assumption
on my part that it was ok to go ahead and print the article.
I am sorry and want to reassure everyone here that
I only mean the best in promoting POTA and I appreciate everything Neil and
Graham have done for POTA fandom and for Ape Chronicles in the
past!
I"ve been putting out Ape Chronicles for 18 years
now and have never had a problem before so it came as a surprise. I
am quite embarrased about it and have been quite stressed for a few days now as
the last thing I would ever want to do is take advantage of Neil as I admire his
work and his help over the years
So I will do my best in the future to make sure
nothing like this happens again and that I don't presume anything without
confirming with others first.
I will make one quick statement that if I ask
anyone for information or for opinions please presume I am going to repeat what
you say in print ! I ask questions because I want to share
this information with other POTA fans ! If you specifically do not want to
be quoted on anything ever please let me know - thanks
On that note I would like to mention that I have
made some big changes to Ape Chronicles this year. We have
gone to a more proffesional format with a wonderful glossy book-style cover and
I have increased the page count of each issue from 40 to
100. I'm excited about how great the issues look and I
appreciate all the input and help from others. Ape
Chronicles is now a labor of love only as I am now officially going in the hole
just by continuing - the printing costs with the new page count and the fancy
cover means that when I ship them for $9.99 including shipping that I am not
covering my costs. Ape Chronicles is purely a non-profit magazine.
So anyone who has thought I am just trying to make a quick buck can rest that
case now. If we want to keep POTA Fandom alive we must
do whatever it takes - none of us have been in this for the money . We love it
and I hope we can all continue to support each other and keep it alive.
Thanks

I'm curious about that last part, pasted below. Aren't you printing through Lulu? If so, why are you paying the postage costs on your end? Lulu uses a print-on-demand model, which means that those ordering copies from Lulu pay the postage since they place their orders directly.

I doubt
that you make "mistakes" and "minor snafu's" like this use of a reply from a private email as an article, without the originator of the email being
asked if it was okay and not being told that it would be used as one, when
you put Simian Scrolls together John.
But if you
do I think a lot of people may have to think twice about anything they say
in a private email to you from now on.

released later on in the year. In fact here's the working cover for the first
issue:
Keep a look
out for more info in the near future.

This isn’t about mistakes, or errors in peoples’ date
of passing, or spelling errors and you are being quite foolish to dismiss it
as such.
This is about integrity, or lack of it. This is
about making a passing comment to someone, then waking up to find it in print
with no consultation at all.
This is about finding someone has used your art in a
tasteless and tactless way.
This is about not communicating with people and
essentially STEALING from people.
This is about finding out too late that this person
has already sold and sent some of said magazines.
Much like when we found a CD of Neil’s and my comics
on eBay recently, sold by a person who changes his eBay ID all the time (just
like Terry does – I wonder why?). Any idea who that was
Terry?
This is about betraying the people who give POTA
fandom their all and who don’t charge people to find out the latest news, but
you would know a fair bit about that anyway so I am sure I’m not telling you a
thing you don’t know.
So yes, it’s time for POTA fans to actually get VALUE
for money from a fanzine…. Looks like me and Neil will take up the offer to be
the third fanzine. And we won’t be stealing things from fans or lifting pages
straight off the net like those other 2 fanzines do – we’ll be NON profit,
value for money, and will not print it if it isn’t
POTA.
Some of the give-aways will be worth more than the
magazine.
You heard it here first POTA
fans….

Simian Scrolls described Frank Aletter as 'the late' years before he sadly passed away.We all make mistakes, as the Dalek said climbing off the dustbin.Teething problems and minor snafu's are part of the fanzine experience-- until you've tried doing a fanzine yourself, you can't really know just how big a task it is to get it done and distributed. When I read this
message back, I realised I'd spelled 'teething' as 'teeting',so we're all mere, puny, humans. It's great to have Chronicles out there again---we're a two fanzine fandom!Anybody else fancy making it more? John, Scrolls. |

2009 - mistakes and apology
I have been away for the weekend
and wanted to publicly address some questions and issues from Neil
Foster
I wrote Neil earlier this year for
some information on a POTA Mexican magazine which he had. He gave me the
information about it in an email
I used his information and put it
in a one page article in Ape Chronicles #46
Since all the information came
from I gave him credit for writing the article
I made mistakes and bad
judgement though because
a) I did not clearly tell Neil I
was going to use his information for an article
b) I did not tell him he was
getting credit for the article
c) I never showed him the article
so he was unaware of it before it was actually
printed
Neil asked me to entirely remove
the article from the issue and any references to
it.
Meanwhile Graham Hill was not
happy with the presentation of his cover artwork for #46 so we revised the
cover.
I had recieved a few advance
orders of #46 - and they had already shipped over a week ago. So
there are a few copies out there with Neil's article and Graham's original
cover.
I have revised the cover artwork
with Graham and totally removed Neil's article
I am apologing for this mistake
and bad assumption on my part that it was ok to go ahead and print the
article.
I am sorry and want to reassure
everyone here that I only mean the best in promoting POTA and I appreciate
everything Neil and Graham have done for POTA fandom and for Ape Chronicles in
the past!
I"ve been putting out Ape
Chronicles for 18 years now and have never had a problem before so it came as
a surprise. I am quite embarrased about it and have been quite
stressed for a few days now as the last thing I would ever want to do is take
advantage of Neil as I admire his work and his help over the
years
So I will do my best in the future
to make sure nothing like this happens again and that I don't presume anything
without confirming with others first.
I will make one quick statement
that if I ask anyone for information or for opinions please presume I am going
to repeat what you say in print ! I ask questions because I
want to share this information with other POTA fans ! If you
specifically do not want to be quoted on anything ever please let me know -
thanks
On that note I would like to
mention that I have made some big changes to Ape Chronicles this
year. We have gone to a more proffesional format with a
wonderful glossy book-style cover and I have increased the page count of
each issue from 40 to 100. I'm excited about how great the
issues look and I appreciate all the input and help from
others. Ape Chronicles is now a labor of love
only as I am now officially going in the hole just by continuing - the
printing costs with the new page count and the fancy cover means that when I
ship them for $9.99 including shipping that I am not covering my costs.
Ape Chronicles is purely a non-profit magazine. So anyone who has
thought I am just trying to make a quick buck can rest that case
now. If we want to keep POTA Fandom alive we must do
whatever it takes - none of us have been in this for the money . We love it
and I hope we can all continue to support each other and keep it alive.
Thanks
