Recently, Clause Akins in Mission: Impossible as a speed dealer with a
daughter who's addicted to aforementioned speed (that episode airs
again this coming Tuesday morning at 1AM on American Life is anyone's
interested), and H.M. Wynant (again) as a criminal who has hidden $27
million dollars and has been captured by other criminals who offer safe passage
for people on the run but then try to brainwash them into revealing secrets
(where they've hidden money, etc). This episode will be shown again on
Thursday July 2nd at 1AM.
BTW James, I stayed awake for this one... :-)

Hopefully it's better than "Mongol". How you can make a boring movie about
Genghis Khan is beyond me, but man they sure found a way. One of four movies I
actually walked out on last year because they were either boring or simply
bad.
Chris L.
>>Talk about a comeback. Maybe there was something to all those
religious epics he did. Actually, the divine intervention is the folks who shot
the movie "Genghis Khan" with Charlton Heston in 1992 and then ran out of money.
Now they're looking to finish the movie and release it. Doesn't sound like the
recipe for a quality film but if it's any good it'll be one last "new"
performance in a movie theater with Chuck. The late Pat Morita is also in it.

I interned at a TV station back in 1990, and as I recall if you
purchased/licensed movies or television series for broadcast, you had the rights
to use their content for publicity. If not, every single station that created an
opening/closing for their movie broadcasts (Channel 9 and 11 from the NYC are
come to mind) would have had problems using all those different images.
Chris L.
>>Thanks Dave. I wonder if they got FOX's approval to do that.

This puts me in mind of that one website that has photos of a back
lot where all the old Fox props were (painfully) stored outside. Included
was the Spaceship used in PLANET, ESCAPE, and the TV series, the Doomsday Bomb,
and (according to the guy who wrote the comments) part of that infamous circular
tunnel that appeared in BENEATH, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, CONQUEST, and THE
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. That I always questioned because the tunnel seemed to be
one of those sets that was never taken down, however it's possible that those
photos were taken sometime in the 80's. I just don't remember right now.

True, but then none of those places were really concerned with exactly with
copyrights. Actually, there's a store up in Lake George, NY that sells
audio/video concert bootlegs to this day, and that's where I first came across
things of that nature.

I like the polo shirt too but they don't say if the logo is a real patch that is sewn on or just an iron-on.

'The Wauchula Woods Accord' stems from writer Charles Siebert's chance encounter with Roger, the chimpanzee
Scribner, 208 pp., $25 Back
in the 1980s, the U.S. government overbred captive chimpanzees in the
frenzied, but mistaken, expectation that these genetically close
primates would become lab surrogates to test a human vaccine against
HIV. Today, there are roughly 3,000 extraneous chimps in the United
States, often, as writer Charles Siebert describes them, as complete
evolutionary anomalies, "a chimpanzee with a name and yet no
recollection of a tree."
Moreover, those cute chimps cavorting in Super Bowl commercials or
lending verisimilitude to "Planet of the Apes" work only as juveniles.
That's because chimpanzees, who are five times stronger than humans
at maturity, can't be managed safely after age 5 or 6. Their remaining
50 or 60 years are spent languishing in cages, roadside attractions,
private homes or sanctuaries.
The consequences of misjudging their wildness can
be horrific -- witness the woman lying in the Cleveland Clinic now
after her face was torn apart in February by 14-year-old Travis, a pet
whose Connecticut owner served him wine in long-stemmed glasses.
Siebert, interested in the fate of these creatures, began knocking
about the country looking for old stars of film and screen. He tells us
what he found in "The Wauchula Woods Accord," a new book that makes
fascinating, thought-provoking and, at times, distressing reading.
In it, Siebert describes Roger, a castrated, hazel-eyed 28-year-old
chimp retired from the Ringling Bros. "Orchestra," in which he played
cello for 10 years.
"The moment Roger saw me .¤.¤. he seemed utterly convinced that we
already knew each other. Actually stood and applauded. Excited but not
overly fawning applause. Three loud, slow claps of his long leathery
hands. As though he'd somehow been expecting me all along. As though to
say, 'Oh you. Finally. Where have you been?' "
The caretakers noticed this vivid, peculiar reaction, too. Siebert
secured permission to stay a week on the grounds of the Center for
Great Apes, on the outskirts of Wauchula, Fla. His beautifully-written
book is framed by an hour-by-hour account of his final night in the
center, sitting up with Roger, staring across their private divide,
trying to puzzle out their meaning to each other.
In between these diarylike entries are ethical, scientific and
historical digressions limning the troubled boundary between humans and
sentient animals, mostly primates, but also elephants, dolphins, even a
giant Pacific octopus.
Siebert, 54, skates farther out than most people onto the ice of
nonverbal, interspecies empathy, but his book will thrill all those zoo
visitors made queasy by what the author calls "the inescapable,
multisided sadness" between captor and captive.
Not as exacting as philosopher Peter Singer, nor as comprehensive as
Jane Goodall, Siebert's book nevertheless belongs on a shelf near
theirs. He rewards us in the final pages with a satisfying insight into
what provoked Roger's reaction to him.
Siebert lets us see that Roger and "and all the other retirees have,
like us, minds enough to lose." Their potential for restoration rests
in the paradox of humans becoming, as Siebert puts it, better animals.

Yeah, that would be cool -- "Dr. Zaius' Condoms... Man is a nuisance, a
walking pestilence. Let him not breed in great numbers."
Of course, it's a little late in the history of the world for that.
What we need is "Dr. Zaius' nasty little plague germ! The sooner he is
exterminated, the better!"

Hey John, that sounds like a great

I think only beneficial things can come this way to
get better exposure for POTA
and it also gives extra promo to all the readers of

I'm up for anything that further promotes POTA
Plus I am always happy to plug all the various fanzines and latest news at

.htmlI like that last ad for BENEATH at the Loew's State 2 on Broadway &
45th St. (theatre now long gone). It says "Children under 12
accompanied by adult $1.00 at all times." Now I know that my great
aunt, who took me to see it on June 13, 1970 (and from the ad I see it
must have been the 1:45 pm showing) paid exactly a buck to get me in!
I wonder how much she had to pay for herself? I don't think she liked
the movie much and years later (she died in 1985) I reminded her she
took me and she had no memory of it.
How many others here of fond or even beloved memories of seeing these
films as kids, but find the adults that took us feel or remember
nothing about it?

David, once you are logged onto the group through Yahoo, why don't you create an album and plop your pictures in there? Sometimes it's as slow as molasses, but at least your photos will be in an album for
all of apedom to see.

It's funny but there's a rash of fake death stories.
Everyone from Rick Astley to George Clooney.
They seem to be coming from Asia. Someone
who actually is dead is Karl Malden. POTA

was rumored dead and Microsoft's stock there
plummeted until the hoax was finally resolved.
The latest on Michael Jackson . . . Still Dead!

Once again, it's interesting to see where
Fox's head is at with their sci-fi reboots ("Emasculation to begin with...").
"Caesar" is still in the ether but here's Robert Rodriguez talking about the
free hand Fox is giving him to start fresh with the "Predator" franchise.
Rodriguez is one of the more innovative movie talents around ("Sin
City", etc.). He says they want to get as far away from "Alien vs. Predator" as
they can, realizing that was a mistake. This plus bringing back Ridley Scott for
the new "Alien"...is Fox "getting it"? Have they really turned a

Personaly, I'm getting tired of hearing about every minute detail about Jackson but I was wondering about this....
Jackson's chimp living the good life in SWFL Bubbles was once a celebrity himself
BY E.I. ROTTERSMAN news@...
| | GETTY IMAGES BY GAB ARCHIVE/REDFERNS Michael Jackson with Bubbles in 1984. |
|
Bubbles,
the chimpanzee who was Michael Jackson's constant companion for years,
has been living at the Center for Great Apes, a sanctuary for
chimpanzees and orangutans in Wauchula, about 70 miles north of Fort
Myers, since 2005.
"He's a wonderful chimpanzee," said Patti Ragan, founder and director of the ape center.
Ms. Ragan said the 26-year-old chimp spends his days playing with
fellow chimpanzees, running around the center's tunnel system and,
well, just being Bubbles.
"We have lots of celebrities here," Ragan said. "We treat them all the same. We try to keep their lives as rich as we can."
Bubbles was born at a biomedical research facility in Austin, Texas, in
1983. While still an infant, he was purchased for Mr. Jackson by animal
trainer Bob Dunn, center officials said.
The chimp reportedly lived with the pop star at his Neverland compound,
sat in on the recording of the "Bad" album and accompanied Mr. Jackson
on the "Bad" world tour in 1988.
| | COURTESY PHOTO Knuckles, 11, arrived at the center nine years ago from an entertainment compound in California. |
|
However,
the singer's relationship with Bubbles was mocked in the press and
became the first in a series of bizarre, eccentric behaviors that
followed the pop icon the rest of his career.
When Bubbles grew too large, he was removed to Mr. Dunn's California
compound. In 2005, Mr. Dunn retired from the business of working
chimpanzees and orangutans and sent all his apes, including Bubbles, to
the Center for Great Apes.
Mr. Jackson never visited Bubbles in Florida, center officials said.
There is also a question of whether Mr. Jackson's estate will provide
funds for Bubbles' care.
The only funds the Center receives is through private donations, Ms.
Ragan said. Anyone wishing to support Bubbles or any of the other
chimpanzees or apes can contribute through its Web site
www.greatapecenter.org.
"We're greatful for any support," she said.
The Center for Great Apes houses 42 chimpanzees and orangutans on 120
rural acres. They roam the grounds through an aboveground tunnel system
that links roomy enclosures.
Most of the apes, primates without tails, came to the 15-year-old
sanctuary with stories that are as rich as Bubbles'. There's Sammy, who
played the title role in "Dunston Checks In," a 1996 film starring
Jason Alexander and Faye Dunaway. The Career Builder chimps and Trunk
Monkey stars also call the center home, along with apes from circus
acts, roadside zoos and private homes.
There's even a chimp with disabilities. Knuckles, now 8 years old, was
born with cerebral palsy and came to the Wauchula sanctuary after being
deemed not useable in the entertainment business.
Most of the primates come to the Center for Great Apes with social
problems caused by being too "humanized" or swiped too early from their
mothers. Others are the product of misguided owners who thought it
would be fun to have a pet chimp, not figuring they would eventually
grow up.
Such is the plight of most of the primates at the Center For Great
Apes. And at the center of these apes' lives is Ms. Ragan, the director
and founder of the sanctuary.
Petite and soft-spoken, Ms. Ragan is as much a giant to her 42 primate
charges as they are to her. With a wide grin, she rattles off the names
and personalities of each of the apes.
Ms. Ragan has the blessing and continual support of world-renowned
primatologist Jane Goodall. And she has a dedicated staff of about 16
and a devoted corps of volunteers, including Sue DuPre, who plays a
recorder and blows bubbles for the apes, and her 80-yearold father,
Miller Ekas. The North Fort Myers man is a gentle soul who coos to the
apes as he fixes things around the sanctuary.
"I just love the animals," Mr. Ekas told
Florida Weekly in November. "They all have a sense of humor."
Ms. Ragan has her life savings and her heart invested in helping apes
that would have no other place to go but biomedical labs, where they
would be subjected to research, or roadside shows. She gives them what
she calls dignified retirement and lives.
Despite the fact that it costs $600,000 a year — $15,000 per ape — Ms.
Ragan pushes on, working to secure money for the sanctuary.
Though her main goal is to provide a permanent home to ape rescues and
retirees, she also hopes to make society aware of the need to not
support apes in the entertainment business or as pets.
As young apes, they might look cute and funny in shows and movies and
even in your living room, but they grow up to weigh more than 200
pounds.
Aside from the need for homes for displaced apes, many of the world's
primates are being lost to corrupt governments and loss of habitats,
Ms. Ragan says, adding, "We're all on this planet together."
Center for Great Apes >>The center is on 120 acres in Wauchula, north of Tampa. >>The sanctuary cares for 14 orangutans and 28 chimpanzees.
>>The outside habitats are three stories tall (about 35 feet) and all 12 enclosures are connected to each other, as well as to the vet
clinic, by a tunnel/chute system that is more than 4,000 feet long. >> As a private nonprofit sanctuary, the
Center for Great Apes' priority is maintaining a safe haven and peaceful habitat for the apes. Therefore, the sanctuary is not open to
the public as an attraction. >>For more information or to make a donation, go to

Yes Jeff is still alive. I loved it the other night when he showed up on The Colbert Report just as Steven was reporting on his death.
It is sad about Karl Malden. He had two other POTA connections. He was in Patton which was directed by Franklin Schaffner. He was also in the thriller 'Cat O'Nine Tails' with James
Franciscus.

I really don't think that we are dwindling in number. Back in 2001 at the height of mainstream interest there was only one POTA group around with only a few hundred members. Since then more have
sprung up, like Forum of the Apes, and this group alone has swelled to over 800 members. Here we have some original members still around like Rory and much newer members like you and William Burge who have come to share
with the rest of us. Sure there are some who have fallen away from being active on a regular basis but many still pop-up on occasion to check in. Still we are gaining new members all the time from all over the world
including countries like India. Most are middle aged who have been fans since they were kids and are just re-discovering POTA. But there are also many younger people who use to watch the films on TV with their Dad.
Also there are a lot of interesting things happening in the world of POTA. There's a new publication from Blam! that will be officially announced at the San Diego Comic Con later this month. There
is the new "Forbidden Zine" fanzine to look forward to as well as the return of "Ape Chronicles". And of course FOX is currently developing a new POTA film 'Caesar'.
On this group there are many exciting things that we'll be featuring in the coming months. Tomorrow we'll be unveiling the first of several new additions to the Group Website. We will continue
to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Marvel's Magazine thoughout the summer with mini-sites for issues 2 and 3. And in the fall we will be commemorating the 35th Anniversary of the TV series with a 13 week...well, I
think I'll leave that as a surprize.
There is really a lot to look forward to for POTA fans.
And as far as world domination, I've got two guys working on a big ass space laser;-)

Apemania will be baking foam latex appliances to fit my two sons who are 10 years and 4 years. I will sew them standard issue gorilla outfits including bandolier and perhaps fake a couple
of"wooden" clubs. They are going to look so bloody fabulous. I am one excited chimpette!
