At least they had the sense to show a projected video (Wonder if it was
the Blu-ray?). In the late eighties (or early nineties) I went to such
a thing on a beach in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. It was a 16mm print on a
projector run by a gasoline powered generator. I have to say it was
cool when it came to the end of the movie and you could hear the real
surf behind you, but it wasn't so cool when the generator ran out of
gas before the end.

The statue was too big to blow up. Easy to seal up a cave and leave it inaccessible. To blow up a 150 foot statute would leave thousands of pieces of all size, the gorillas would have taken home souvenir chunks, etc. and way too many witnesses. Remember the Taliban and the difficulty they had in years of trying to destroy those old Buddhist statutes carved into the rock, even with modern weapons.

Ok, I'm done.

"When Brent and Nova are hiding in the back room of Cornelius and Zira's house, Franciscus is mouthing part of Cornelius's speech"

"An alternate ending was written where Taylor, Brent and Nova escape the underground city prior to the detonation of the bomb, which was not a doomsday device as it is in the finished film. They return to Ape City and, along with Zira and Cornelius, release the humans from the cages and a new order is begun. The script ends hundreds of years later with the Lawgiver teaching a group of ape and human children, who sit in harmony together. The final shot of the script shows a mutated gorilla emerging from the underground and fatally shooting a flying dove."

But the Buddhist statues were made of solid rock. The statue of Liberty is far more fragile. It's just a thin layer of copper over a metal frame. You wouldn't need more Gorillas to blow it up, just a lot more explosives.

Subject: OT: Ridley Scott to direct "Alien" prequel
.html
.html
Sounds like Fox got their wish. According to "Variety", Sir Ridley Scott is "attached" to direct a prequel to his 1979 "Alien", the movie that spawned a franchise. This is big news in the world of sci-fi (if it happens). Scott has directed two sci-fi movies, "Alien" and "Blade Runner", both considered classics. This is certainly a feather in Fox's cap, and with James Cameron's "Avatar" coming out in December Fox MIGHT be the place to look again for quality science fiction, as they were once upon a time.
The down side is they've just hired a writer and we know how that goes. Scott's involvement probably depends on the script that develops. The "Apes" prequel has had a writer for a while and there hasn't been much movement. But this suggests Fox is getting serious about it's franchises (and attracting top talent). How that will effect POTA remains to be seen.

That came from the original post but as far as I'm concerned that's something that develops.

You will recall I sent a draft of BEGINS to you and others and I received valuable comments from everyone (Greg P said I didn't name anyone, others demonstrated confusion about some plot points) and I re-wrote it and we got something that everyone was happy with (except I couldn't work out how else to re-write the final page, and I think it should be cool with the back story).

Now, I will be individually naming people and thanking them when BEGINS is published.  However it's still MY story, so I won't be attributing people as co-writers.

I think things change when it's no longer your story because of the contributions of others and that's when I think people can say "if this makes money I want some!".

Now that's all about people communicating - in a group like the one I've assembled, if someone came up with a story I'd be inclined to say "go ahead and write it then" and it would be their story, that I would pay them for.  Or if they significantly changed MY story I'd say "OK then what percentage of this story do you think is yours?" and reach an agreement.  If no agreement is reached, one cannot go forward.  If agreement is reached then it goes to the next step.

It's only a problem if you allow it to be.

Michael

Actually, it's officially a House of Horror but there's many POTA items. I don't remember if I've brought this up before. Daniel Roebuck is an actor with one of those recognizable faces, he's done a lot of TV shows, was a regular on "Matlock", "Lost". He might be best known for playing Jay Leno in the TV movie "The Late Show" and got a lot of attention as the killer in the movie "River's Edge".
He's a big monster and POTA fan. He produced and directed a show called "Monsterama" which included episodes about POTA Collectibles and about Apemania. He grew up watching Bill Blake's POTA characters on "The Gene London Show".

Planet of the apes (2001). Movie posters are art and, unfortunately, the forgotten one. In the early years of cinema history, they were used just like advertising material. Displayed in theatres only, movie posters had the same function ...

Anyway, here's pictures of his collection for those who are interested:

Here's his imdb, including the "Monsterama" episodes:

One Million Years BC is one of my earliest cinema memories! I was too young to notice Raquel and Martine at the time but I did notice the music. It would be about another 25 years until I would eventually get around to buying the score.

The 80's definitely had a lot of interesting points of pop culture, including the start of things that are now commonplace. Take the Atari 2600 for example. Back then, a home gaming console was revolutionary, and Atari dominated the market for quite a few years despite competition from Coleco and Mattel. The 80's also featured the last true creative explosion in music, mainly because off all the new technology that influenced how songs were composed, performed, produced, and engineered. Everything since then has been variations of "stripping things out", "getting back to the basics", etc. Not that there hasn't been a lot of interesting stuff released in the past 20 years, but there hasn't been another event that's had that kind of impact. Funny you should say that . . .

I just got my 16 track out of the shop after over a year.  They could only get maybe only half the tracks up to spec, but it's worth it.  My takeup reel is MIA along with the Kim Hunter pics and I have to buy a spare until it turns up. Again, worth it!  I have to use a hybrid Vox amp until the Marshall is out of the shop, and then get a tube mic pre-amp to go with my glass tube U-47 clone by Wunder.  Wonder why?  To warm all the music up before it gets turned into bits by a bunch of microchips in the computer.  Progress is not always forward.  Non-Linier Editing is so convenient almost everyone is willing to compromise the music to use it. If not for guys like Steve Albini you wouldn't even be able to record on a 24 track on tape anymore.  Reel to Reel Recorders may be as extinct as dinosaurs these days, but Dinosaurs Kicked Ass!

Yes, that was Martine, not Martin.

What CD of the score do you have, Dave? I have the Legend label one
that includes cues from "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" and "Creatures

Yes, I believe it was Lanzorotte in the Canary Islands. A '70s Western

The best thing that came out of the '70s was the start of the home
video era (though don't tell that to Bob Crane).

When I think back at how awful it was to have to wait years to see a
movie again, or to have to watch it with commercials and all cut up --
    it makes me shudder.

Many things today suck -- and getting old sucks --, but at least I can

that's pretty damn good for the most part.

Thanks William. The Walker was a beautiful theater but is was starting to fall apart in the 60' & 70's. In the '80s they declared it a lankmark as restored the place but it eventually they turned it into a multi-plex. Unfortunately that didn't help and in the '90s it was turned into a Mandee's. I think the last movie I saw there was Alien 3.

I saw Planet there with One Million BC sometime in the summer of '68. I'm not really sure of the exact date since I was 6 at the time.

Here are some facts about Liberty's structure and durability.......
I wonder if she would have still been in such shape in 3955.......

The statue is of a robed woman holding a torch, and is made of a sheathing of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf (originally made of copper and later altered to hold glass panes).

in 1916, the Black Tom explosion caused $100,000 worth of damage ($1.98 million in 2008 dollars[23] ) to the statue, embedding fragmentation and eventually leading to the closing of the torch to visitors. The same year, Gutzon Borglum, sculptor of Mount Rushmore, modified the original copper torch by cutting away most of the copper in the flame, retrofitting glass panes and installing an internal light.[24] After these modifications, the torch severely leaked rainwater and snowmelt, accelerating corrosion inside the statue. President Franklin D. Roosevelt rededicated the Statue of Liberty on its 50th anniversary (October 28, 1936).

Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repoussé technique, where a malleable metal is hammered on the reverse side.

As a biostatic surface in hospitals, and to line parts of ships to protect against barnacles and mussels, originally used pure, but superseded by Muntz metal. Bacteria will not grow on a copper surface because it is biostatic.

The Statue of Liberty was engineered to withstand heavy winds. Winds of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) cause the Statue to sway 3 inches (76 mm) and the torch to sway 5 inches (130 mm). This allows the Statue to move rather than break in high wind load conditions.

In 1984, Each of the 1,350 shaped iron ribs backing the skin had to be removed and replaced. The iron had experienced galvanic corrosion wherever it contacted the copper skin, losing up to 50% of its thickness. Bartholdi had anticipated the problem and used an asbestos/pitch combination to separate the metals, but the insulation had worn away decades before. New bars of stainless steel bent into matching shapes replaced the iron bars, with Teflon film separating them from the skin for further insulation and friction reduction.

The internal structure of the upraised right arm was reworked. The statue was erected with the arm offset 18" (0.46 m) to the right and forward of Eiffel's central frame, while the head was offset 24" (0.61 m) to the left, which had been compromising the framework. Theory held that Bartholdi made the modification without Eiffel's involvement after seeing the arm and head were too close. Engineers considered reinforcements made in 1932 insufficient and added diagonal bracing in 1984 and 1986 to make the arm structurally sound.

Besides the replacement of much of the internal iron with stainless steel and the structural reinforcement of the statue itself, the restoration of the mid-1980s also included the replacement of the original torch with a replica, replacing the original iron stairs with new stairs, installing a newer elevator within the pedestal, and upgrading climate control systems. The Statue of Liberty was reopened to the public on July 5, 1986.

Yup that's the Walker and the Marboro as they looked in the '70s. I believe the marquee and the lobby of the Walker were re-done around 1970 or 1971.

I saw Planet and Battle for the first time at the Walker in '68 and '73, respectively. And saw Beneath in '70 and Escape in '71 at the Marboro. I did see both Escape and Conquest for a second time each at the Walker when they were playing there as second features to other films, I think one of those other films was The Hot Rock but can't be sure.

My first "real" apartment  living on my own was around the corner from the Walker theatre in 1984. Ah, memories!
