Wow! Never thought I'd ever see one of those. That would sure be
something to have -- if you have the wall big enough to display it.

Meanwhile, I notice someone's trying to sell what they say is an
original Icarus prop from the original.

Oh yeah, love that list.... BLADERUNNER is #1.

People.... BLADERUNNER is #2 -- BIG TIME!

Only LOGAN'S RUN is more #2 than BLADERUNNER. Even DAMNATION ALLEY
isn't as much #2 as BLADERUNNER.

I agree. Independance Day number 85, POTA should have been higher that number 8.

It's a shallow list, I'll bet written by someone in their early
twenties. Take this example:

23) The Thing (1982)
A much-improved remake of 1950s quickie The Thing From Outer Space,
John Carpenter's best movie is an unbearably tense story of a
shape-shifting alien at an Antarctic research station. A tight and
astonishingly bleak chiller, The Thing boasts well-drawn characters and
sick, sick effects from Rob Bottin.

OK, first off, the "1950s quickie" was titled "The Thing From Another
World." Any true fan of SF (yes, SF not "Sci-Fi") would know that.
Also, it wasn't a "quickie," if this person even knows what that means,
AND any truly intelligent film scholar, even one limited to just SF
film, would tell you that the original "The Thing (From Another World)
is far superior to Carpenter's over-the-top and far less suspenseful
remake, and I'm saying that as someone who likes both films equally.

A silly list. Now I have to get back to watching "The Big Bang Theory."

I agree. "Quatermass and the Pit" is an excellent SF film (have the
DVD of course), released in the states the same month PLANET came out
in 1968. "Quatermass 2" is an earlier, black and white film from the
late fifties, also very good.

Not a bad list, really. The top twenty was about right, though I'm not a big original Solaris fan, and Wrath of Khan should be higher than it was. I'd have put POTA in the top five, but that's me. I like POTA better than Blade Runner.

Overall, though...it shows the resilience of a great idea. Still in the top ten, after forty years! Amen, brother!

Independence Day, Starship Troopers, and Stargate shouldn't even be on the list. I hate mixing camp with serious moments. To me there's no such thing as 'B-movie with a budget' charm.

I like the top 10 but I believe that Apes, of course, should be higher and ET, though a good movie, should be lower (maybe twenty-something). The latter is more of a family movie that just doesn't have much of a 'social commentary' element to it.

Stargate, I take issue with.

It was a good sci fi film. However like a few films we know perhaps the series has diluted it's apeal ?

Independence Day, Starship Troopers, and Stargate shouldn't even be on the list. I hate mixing camp with serious moments. To me there's no such thing as 'B-movie with a budget' charm.

I like the top 10 but I believe that Apes, of course, should be higher and ET, though a good movie, should be lower (maybe twenty-something) . The latter is more of a family movie that just doesn't have much of a 'social commentary' element to it.

I agree that Stargate was the best out of the three I listed. I can at least watch that movie. We'll just have to leave it at that. This is all a matter of opinion anyway.

I'm a great fan of SG-1. The film...not as much, though I still like it. However, that is the only Emerich film I enjoy. Everything he's done since then has left me cold--he's one of the worst writer-directors in Hollywood, in my opinion. But Stargate did have its moments.

I agree. "Quatermass and the Pit" is an excellent SF film (have the
DVD of course), released in the states the same month PLANET came out
in 1968. "Quatermass 2" is an earlier, black and white film from the
late fifties, also very good.

Thanks William. Only familiar with the Loew's Oriental. I think the first film I ever saw there was Star Wars. But never went there when it was a single theater. They split it into two some time in the mid-70s. It was first theater in this area to do so.

The Hoyts Group is an Australian company consisting of Hoyts Exhibition, Hoyts Distribution and Val Morgan.

Hoyts Exhibition manages 450 screens across 40 Australian and 9  New Zealand cinema complexes; making it Australia 's second largest cinema chain. Val Morgan, the cinema advertising arm of the Hoyts group, dominates the cinema advertising market with over 95% market share. Finally, Hoyts Distribution is the largest independent film distributor in Australia ; a business centred on the purchase of rights to, and subsequent management of, distributing independent films in Australia through theatrical, television and home entertainment channels.

There’s a RegENT in Brisbane, which is very old and would win the hearts of any enthusiast (still has the organ the chappy played in the old B&W silent movies when Whitty would twirl his evil one-dimensional moustache after tying the blonde to the train tracks).

This is its exterior and I don’t think they match at all!  But it has a MAGNIFICENT inside………

    Regent Theatre, Brisbane by kencta.

    Regent Theatre, Brisbane by kencta.

    Regent Theatre, Brisbane by kencta.

However the cinema shown below is IMHO in SYDNEY – in George Street I believe.  Neil?  William – was there any more information?

    Strange name change.
I guess they thought it sounded cooler.
Also there was the Pit & The Pendulum.
Can't imagine any confusion there. More
so with 20 Million Miles to Earth.  Maybe
they didn't feel American audiences would
remember Quartermass & The Pit from a
decade earlier.  None of the Posters have
that title.  But it seems to me whenever it's
on television it's either called that or just
Quartermass, with no mention of the Pit.
    Hmmmm...???

I agree. "Quatermass and the Pit" is an excellent SF film (have the
DVD of course), released in the states the same month PLANET came out

    late fifties, also very good.

    Bill,

With all the PLANET ads you've been posting, thought you might like to
see the original image of Dr. Zaius.

Jillian dumps Brian to marry some other guy,
and Brian's dating Lauren Conrad of The Hills.
It cuts to Fallon, Ferguson and Leno in live action
doing jokes about them and then back to animated,
and Ziaus talking to some other starlet about leaving
everyone he knows and moving out to work in Hollywood
to be with her. Its only about a 10 second shot of him, but
he is wearing the jacket.  Maybe Jess can tell if it's acurate.
