I ordered this figure when they were announced and received it about a month ago. I think it looks fantastic overall. They even put a light coating of simulated dust on the boots. Only a couple of nitpicks - the eyes could have been painted a little better, and the doll is designed to fit in his right hand with the head pointing down(?) for some strange reason. You can get him to hold it with the head up, its just not as secure. I certainly would like to see Sideshow do more of these, for sure.

I agree with you, Tim. The gorillas are awesome. The intricate details are incredible, the painted shells in the rifle magazine and the jailor's key, for instance. Really great work. I was also not sure about the wire supports. The only photos I've seen show the wire bracing the inside of the legs, even though that looks a little odd!

Hollywood For Sale By Owner
North Hollywood, CA.
9/10/2009 04:02 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)
Its like
Hollywoods for sale exclaims auctioneer liquidator Melissa Storment, who has
been retained by 20th Century Props, one of the largest memorabilia
and prop houses in the world. The 195,000 sq. ft. location in North Hollywood is
closing their doors forever and everything must be sold. Need your own
throne, how about one from the Planet of The Apes or a chandelier; we
have hundreds and how about that Art Deco or Antique furniture youve been
looking for, there are thousands? Just about anything you might want, need or
cant live with out is among the 70,000 authentic items that are being
liquidated at up to 70% off.
Its like walking
into the Smithsonian, so much history, so many unique and real conversation
pieces we should charge admission says Robert Storment, who is CEO of Super
Auctions, the worlds largest entertainment auctioneers who is handling the
gigantic task of making sure every item goes to a new family or collector.
Harvey Schwartz CEO
of 20th Century Props has accumulated one of the worlds largest
inventories of memorabilia, and antiquities ever before offered at public
liquidation. Mr. Schwartz had another local firm conduct an auction on a
previous date. Unfortunately there was just too much inventory; it didnt even
make a dent. Add to the fact that literally thousands of rare items were inside
vaults and are now being offered for sale to the public for the first time makes
this an extremely important event.
Unlike most prop
houses that use artificial or make believe items, majority of these items are
authentic and date from the 1940s to the 1990s and were used in almost any of
your favorite Television or Film. If it was shot in Hollywood, most likely Mr.
Schwartz has an item for you. From antiquities, neon, jewelry, lighting, pallet
Racks there is something for every one in this gigantic treasure hunt. Mr.
Schwarz sadly states It breaks my heart, but it all has to go. A portion of
the proceeds will go to charity. Sale begins this Friday thru Monday
between 10 and 8 pm.
Where:
20th Century Props, 11651 Hart Street, North Hollywood,
CA.
When: Friday thru Monday 10am until

.htmlI received mine approx a month ago and the head sculpt is one of the best I have seen.I have all the Apes figures, and can find faults in most.Even the new hot toys Apes, from the front they look very good, but the side of them look real bad with the bridge of the nose going straight down instead of curving downward. That pisses me off big time. But I think you will like the Zaius a lot.The back of the clothing is not screen accurate, but it is minor to me.If the heads look great which is rare, then I can deal with any costume flaws. This head sculpt again is amazing.

I haven't seen any "official" photographs. The ones I've seen were on fan web site like Sideshow Collectors, and I've also seen the stand for sale on eBay and described as a "hook-on between the legs" style. And personally, I just don't see any other way for it to work. I'm with you, though, the waist wrap around style is definitely preferable to this. I'm not really complaining though, I'll take collectibles of this quality any time and just keep my mouth shut.

.html Hiya, all!
Here's a semi-unusual request (or maybe not)... I'm looking for some info on the "scarecrows" that the intrepid Icarus astronauts come across just before they find water in the Planet of the Apes. They look like logs erected in a narrow "x" shaped, wrapped with pelts / skins/ fur to look vaguely look like ape figures.
I'm curious if anyone has any ideas as to size, material, etc. I might even luck out with somebody having some nice behind the scenes shots.
I want to build some props for my 1/6 scale apes I have incoming... and figure the scarecrows would be a good start.
Thanx in advance!

An ending which he stole from the book!
8. Planet of the Apes (director) – the original belongs in a
Top 9 list of All-Time sci-fi movies, and while Burton doesn't come that close,
he's not a damn dirty ape for attempting this remake. It features great makeup
and a nice attempt at a twist ending of its own.

I heard from the person I know at Fox Movie Channel, and he told me that
they're planning on running another POTA marathon but this time it's going to be
on Halloween. Details are still being sorted out as far as the schedule goes, so
as soon as I get the specifics I'll pass them along. I did request that they try
and dig up the BENEATH NATO though, since of the five films that's the one that
the most in common with the theme of the Holiday.
Again, if anyone makes a Holiday related comment akin to "Well, I'm
pretty terrified whenever I watch BATTLE", you get either a pop in the
mouth or a bust in the chops. Your choice.

The APES marathon schedule is already up at the Fox Movie Channel website. Looks like it all starts at 6 AM Friday on Oct. 30th and goes for the whole weekend -- just like before! Now if only TFMC were in HD.

I’d have to say I don’t think they
could make it shine any more than the DVD release.
It would be like one of the many releases
we seem to be getting where it is on Blu-Ray, but the quality is no better.
To justify a BR release, they have to come
up with a better looking master print, then transfer that to
BR.
I hope I’m wrong but I think the
POTA TV Show master is as good as you get and the DVD is as good a
representation of that as you can get.
Anyone else suffer from inferior BR
releases?

Typical of many episodic DVD release this is a cost prohibitive concern that simply isn't done. Movies are different since they are a single shot ordeal with a limited running time. The very nature of even a limited run series is still up there when you consider the total running time and work involved.
Here in the US this is very rare if it happens at all. In the UK there is more of a concern given to "library" releases for TV on DVD with restorations being conducted by companies like Granada who has put considerable effort into past shows like SPACE: 1999, and THE PRISONER.
In order to secure the effort they have made deals with various cable companies to partially pay for the rendering of HD masters. It is further funded by deals made with DVD companies for both standard DVD masters from the HD for home video release.
Now in the case of FOX even though it is owned by one company with umbrella companies (Cable, Home Video) each is still in control and must abide by budgets set up within their realm. I'm not say it can't be done, I'm just saying it would take someone with both the fore thought and savvy to relegate a deal that would both pay and exploit the POTA Series for restoration/remaster to spread out the cost and profit for this project to be done - both domestic and foreign - to make it work.
Going by the past I just don't see FOX doing this.
My only fear is that they could pull a fast one and simply up-convert the old mastered and burn them onto Blu-ray. This up-converting is something that goes on with some cable channels who aren't really broadcasting true HD masters of films. Worse it when TNT actually crops films and broadcasts them in HD like the LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy - which should be 2.35:1 but is broadcast in 1.85:1.
Simply up-converting a standard DVD master to 1080i is something a good DVD player can do. It would be criminal if FOX decided to do the same and release the POTA TV Series on Blu just to save money and take advantage of the fans.
If the TV Series was ever scheduled for a Blu release it would been a restoration and new master to fully take advantage of the HD format. --- On Tue, 9/15/09, Michael & Sally Whitty <mswhitty@...> wrote:

Watched the first episode on the 35th anniversary evening. You know

.htmlJeff,
You're not alone. I very much enjoy the series and have found I've gown fonder of it as the years have passed. Where I looked only for adventure and action, when younger, now I enjoy the purity of the performances and characters within each episode.
Having viewed each episode several times through the years I have especially noticed the wonderful rapport between McDowell and Naughton' characters which reverberate with rich interplay.
I always thought the series fell in-between the final and first films; filling a historical gap within the timeline. But upon recent viewing I considered it an alternate timeline into an Ape future altered by suggested variations as stated by Virgil. A different world yet with some familiar names and characters but panning out in a altered way. This future offers more of a hope that Apes and Humans have a chance at making it work. Then again if in deed it is still leading to PLANET and a complete downfall of humanity; and ultimately the Earth, each episode holds more than previously accepted having our astronauts and Galen seemingly trying to spread the hope of unity between the species yet ultimately meaning nothing.
By the final episodes I feel it was trying to reach something it was never allowed to achieve.. I think a second season would have opened up many possibilities with alternate storylines between Apes, Humans, our three heroes and perhaps a mutant society yet undealt with.
I remember as a kid thinking that the name Zaius was perhaps more of a title/name given to the one who held that position, perhaps cultivated from childhood with a kabal as keeper of the secrets/history of the Ape culture - like the mutants have Mendez.
On another point since the DVD release the added clarity of the picture has exposed how much McDowell isn't on camera - the use of a stand-in, who even speaks, is alarming.
As a child I was drawn to the APES not for the hunt, or the revolts or the battle, but for the sake of seeing and being amazed by the performances and emotion played out by characters who were so amazingly real in an unreal way. It was all about seeing talking animals who would finally express their feelings, thoughts and grievances. As an animal lover we impart so much of what 'we" think they feel or think but never really know exactly what is really being expressed. This was so perfectly expressed in the episode, THE GOOD SEEDS" when the farmer's wife corrects her daughter after seeing Virdon get emotional over being separated from his wife and child. She tells her daughter, "They have feelings too." With all the sociological and political mimicry presented in the films this I think touches deeper and more profound ground for me than anything previous. It is
still one of my favorite episodes, and even after 35 years resonates in an emotional way.

I didn't have your standards OR your insights when I was 9 Rory (actually I'm POSITIVE the TV show didn't get to Australia till 1976 so make that 11 years old!).
I very much enjoyed the first episode, and very much looked forward to the next.
POTA had earned my respect and taken me places no other film or TV show had and I wanted to entrust it to teach me more.
Sadly, when I try to watch it now the TV Show just puts me to sleep. But thanks for the memories….

A BD release of the POTA TV series? Not very likely. Has anyone else noticed that the number of Fox classic movie releases has dropped to nothing? We just got a Blu-ray of the movie M*A*S*H and that's about it.
Scott is right, a BD release of the TV series would require a complete restoration. I doubt anyone at Fox would go for it.
Watched the first episode on the 35th anniversary evening. You know the day after it first aired back in 1974 I was depressed. I knew it was bad and I still think it is. About three years ago I tried to watch the entire series, an episode a day. I don't think I made it passed six episodes.
Oh, well... anyway some people like it.

If FOX really decided to do a Blu release of the POTA TV Series they would have to go back to the original negatives, clean them up, and do a scene by shot for shot color timing correction.

Back when the recent "Indiana Jones" movie
was being made, there was a rumor that the early '80's TV show "Tales of the
Gold Monkey" might be released on DVD. This show came on around the time of
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" fever and was an adventure series in that vein. The
DVDs didn't materialize but now there's word that they are being prepared for
release in the U.K. and Australia (no word on a North American release).
So? Well, one of the regular cast was a
certain Roddy McDowall, plus it has an ape/monkey title (though I'm sure Roddy
told them, "Please, do not use the word MONKEY!", but they did). It was produced
by Don Bellisario ("Magnum P.I.", "Quantum Leap", "NCIS") and it was only one
season, so it's not a big commitment.
Roddy fans rejoice!

This man's work is incredible. These were posters that MADE you want to see the movie and captured the thrill and excitement films offered. I really miss this way of promoting a film and I'm totally board with today's uninspired pieces of photoshop.

DARK OF THE SUN has always been a fav of mind along with THE TEN
COMMANDMENTS.
This man's work is incredible. These were posters that MADE you want
to see the movie and captured the thrill and excitement films offered.
I really miss this way of promoting a film and I'm totally board with
today's uninspired pieces of photoshop.
Another reason I'm glad I was born when I was.
Thanks very much for posted the link to talented man's work.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but does anyone know the name of
the artist who painted the artwork for the BATTLE... one sheet?
I'm the webmaster of a fansite dedicated to movie poster artist Frank
C. McCarthy (http://www.conancom pletist.com/ darkofthesun/
Frank_C_McCarthy .html, and the artwork done for BATTLE seems to share
=0
Asome similarities with his style (for example, the rocks on the ground,
the sided red light on the main character, the multitude - men
fighting, horses charging - in the background, the Aldo pose that seems
reminiscent of the Moses one from the TEN COMMANDMENTS one sheet,
etc.). On the other hand, McCarthy was supposedly not active anymore in
the movie poster business when BATTLE was released, and I'm inclined to
think that this artwork was rather done by some McCarthy copycat...
Any
idea? <.html

generally pleased with it, but I do wish I could change the pose. I'm
not going to be checking out his butt, so I don't care if the jacket
isn't right in the back, but I definitely don't like how the hair looks
in the back, so I'll just never look at the back. I also think the
clothing isn't as orange as it should be. I'm also not sure the glyph
on the boots is right, but I'll have to check the movie or something.
Overall, though, it's pretty nice.
What isn't so nice is the nearly $300 (that includes shipping) that's
now added to my Visa. I almost think I'd have prefered a frontal
lobotomy.

I have a French Kim Hunter in The Seventh Victim
poster like that. It's probably bigger than any wall
in the place. She was like, "Where did you get this!?!"
Ah, the wonders of the Internet. It's literally unframeable.
I cant even remember if it's ever been completely unfolded.
If I did it was on the bed and it would have hung over the edges.

You should be making your own appliances, Jess.
If you can sculpt that small it'll be a walk in the park.

.htmlI will have to treat myself and watch the movie again, Rory. I haven't seen it for a few months.
It would be cool to sculpt my own appliances...just don't have the time at the moment...so Apemania's Zira (thank goodness it fits my face so nicely!) will have to do...I am threatening to sleep in the makeup because Halloween falls on a Saturday...I won't have the energy to go ape out on Friday and then Saturday, too...so I'm confused as to what to do. I'm sure I will be relegated to the couch...or maybe I'll relegate my husband to the couch! That's a thought!!
I still have to work on my boys' gorilla pullovers. At least I bought the hair and a cheap wig....and Apemania provided me with the foam latex kid-sized gorilla appliances, so 25% of the work is done. I will really have to get cracking on this. Every time I think about the project, I get butterflies in my stomach simply because I have not started it yet and Halloween is looming. My boys have to look spectacular that day because they have to represent!!
I have been busy with other personal projects. Here is one I am currently highly involved in, non-Planet of the Apes. I have been a member at this particular forum since April 2009, but never posted. It's mostly a boy's club, full of military stuff. I was flushed out of lurking because of some ape projects recently posted there.

.htmlThat photo of the plaque in Kanab, Utah is wrong. POTA wasn't shot in
1968, it was shot in 1967, and it wasn't in Kanab, close but not in
Kanab. I know. I have been there. (You visited Kanab?!!!) Yes.
