That was the golden age of the soundtrack, before there was home video. Like taping movies off TV with a cassette recorder. I could see listening to soundtracks back then when that was all there was. They even used to have dialogue from the movies on them.

That's all very nice and informative but we were talking about the POTA soundtracks not various others.
Do you have the sales figures on the Apes soundtracks, especially the limited edition ones?

Yes, for many years that was the only way that I had the extended cut of "Battle" because I stayed up until 3:00 AM to tape it!  Then when I got the movie on VHS, I discarded the tape and wondered for years if I had imagined the whole bomb sequence, now with the miracle of DVDs I know that I did not!

I've been collecting and LISTENING to film soundtracks since 13 My first was my brother's LP of PLANET OF THE APES. I like it so much he gave it to me - I still have it, original issue from 67' My brother also had the soundtracks on LP to 633 SQUADRON, ZULU, DARK OF THE SUN, and THE BLUE MAX
My first actual LP soundtracks were gifts, 2001 and DR. ZHIVAGO

If I had to give a percentage I'd say soundtracks are 90% of what I listen to. Followed by Classical, New Age, and a small selection of "regular" pop/rock/country/western
The reason for this is that orchestral, to me, is has more ground over songs with lyrics. Hearing the same words sung over and over is boring while orchestral pieces have more complex layering that can been enjoyed concentrating on those different aspects.
I prefer the CD of a soundtrack over isolated score on DVDs/Blu-ray for quick choice listen options - who wants to wait for the next piece with spans of silence until the next cue is heard.
The reason why there are so many limited produced Soundtracks release has more to do with legal issues and percentages in terms of royalties rather than the questionable popularity of a given film. I spoke to a producer of some of these releases and he told when under a certain amount is in produced the rights and royalties come under the radar making it possible.
If soundtracks weren't a viable retail product there wouldn't be whole sections in stores. I think it has more to do with a certain class of people who are attracted to this medium - which would explain why Soundtrack section are smaller in a place like Best Buy over a place like Barnes & Noble.
But yes, Virgina, there are people who actually "listen" to Soundtracks.

Yeah I know you have Rory – how many others do the same is my question (and my confirmed suspicion is "not many").

I am not belittling you for this, or anyone, just asking a question.

The responses have been overall that MOST people would rarely listen to the soundtrack and – particularly now they have the Blu-Ray – they would much rather watch the movie.

The other relevant, interesting thing that's developed is that "a lot" (sic) of people also do POTA related creative stuff listening to the CDs.

Then of course there's one guy trying to make it all personal but I'm not even sure he's a real person so…you know….whatever!

I listen to the Apes scores a lot---whether in the car on long journeys or in the background as mood music in work. The Apes scores have a life all their own and the series, including the tv series, incidentally, was just blessed with the very, very best composers in the industry. There are bits in the scores that really repay being listened to in isolation and if you compare Apes 1968 to Apes 2001 you have, in a microcosm, an example of why society is declining.John, Scrolls.

No doubt it's the royalties and other fees induced by FOX that has inflated the price ESCAPE CD has to be.

Hello S,

I'm one of those that bought the BOYS FROM BRAZIL CD. I've also
recently bought Goldsmith's scores to IN HARM'S WAY, TWILIGHT ZONE --
THE MOVIE, and LONELY ARE THE BRAVE. DIDn't get INDIAN or BABY though.

Over at the Film Score Monthly website there's a blog where people are
complaining that the ESCAPE CD, with only about 30 minutes of music,
should be priced less than $19.95. I agree, but I've ordered it
anyway. I think Varese should have limited this to a 1000, but I'll
bet they figured it would only be bootlegged anyway.

I think this all comes down to a matter of personal taste. For the most part I don't care for Country or Rap music, but both have millions of fans who do. Just because I don't enjoy Country or Rap are the millions of fans who do enjoy those types of music wrong? No, of course not. They just have different taste than me.

I like Rock, Jazz, Classical and, yes, soundtracks. Just as I wouldn't tell a Country or Rap fans that they are wrong for liking Country or Rap; I wouldn't want anyone telling me that I was wrong for liking what I like, including soundtracks.

Personally, I think the release of Escape's soundtrack is a good thing for both POTA & Jerry Goldsmith fans. Plus Varese is a successful company that seems to know what it is doing. So instead of bickering about this, we should be celebrating it instead.

Have not decided yet. I was going to put that off until after getting
the TV, but these days some of the higher end TV have dispensed with
the tuner and sound capabilites entirely (think of it as a uber-TV
monitor) and are made for those who will have secondary video receiver
(be it cable or satellite) and also have home theater sound setup. So
if I end up selecting one one those, I have to have a sound setup
ready right away.

I play Apes scores every few months or so. I almost exclusively listen
to all my music as background when working at home or on the job. I'm
not the type of person who pulls up a chair and drink and then just
sits and listens to music. I do have a few other filmscores but not
many. The one score music I play quite often is the music of Ennio
Morricone.

I don't even listen to music in the car anymore. I got fed up of the
choice of local radio and am now a dedicated podcast listener for
daily commutes and long trips as well. (Almost exclusive "Comic Geek

James,

I think people are missing the point.  I’m not bickering, I’m discussing (and I’ve generated about 60 responses for the group – including drawing out 5 or 6 posts from people who usually sit back and let others do all the “discussing”).

It’s not just the soundtracks, it a whole variety of things.

I also buy the POTA dollies but I don’t play with them.

Jess does, Hunter does (well, he opens the box and poses them anyway) but I don’t – I just buy them and store them until I have a place for them.  I don’t say I’m better than them, I just say I don’t play with the dollies.

I buy the coloring books and pencils, but I don’t join the dots and use the pencils to color them in.

I’ll buy the ESCAPE soundtrack but it will get the original obligatory listening to, then it will be far too difficult for me to choose it over the Beatles or the Sex Pistols (or a soundtrack of Pink Floyd the Wall or The Who’s Tommy!).  Obviously there are those who will play POTA soundtracks over and over again and good for them.

Anyone claiming I am telling people they are wrong if they choose to listen to the soundtracks is putting words in my mouth – I have not said or suggested this.

Nevertheless, I am astounded at the number of people (other than Rory who we all know is a die hard Goldsmith fan) who have said they do listen to POTA soundtracks regularly.  More than I originally thought for sure.

I 100% agree the release of ESCAPE is to be celebrated – it also means all the movies are now officially represented on CD.

Michael

I used to have over 300 film soundtracks and listened to them often.....! To me they were a great escape and helped me relive the films.....and I usually go for music without lyrics anyway.....
These were all on LP ....over the years I have gotten rid of most of them....I don't even have a turn table anymore.....I've kept a handful of them....the Star Wars albums, SUperman, The Black Stallion......
I do listen to the Apes scores often while I'm working or driving.....

Followed by Classical, New Age, and a small selection of "regular" pop/rock/country/ western

James,

I think people are missing the point. I'm not bickering, I'm discussing (and I've generated about 60 responses for the group - including drawing out 5 or 6 posts from people who usually sit back and let others do all the "discussing").

It's not just the soundtracks, it a whole variety of things.

I also buy the POTA dollies but I don't play with them.

Jess does, Hunter does (well, he opens the box and poses them anyway) but I don't - I just buy them and store them until I have a place for them. I don't say I'm better than them, I just say I don't play with the dollies.

I buy the coloring books and pencils, but I don't join the dots and use the pencils to color them in.

I'll buy the ESCAPE soundtrack but it will get the original obligatory listening to, then it will be far too difficult for me to choose it over the Beatles or the Sex Pistols (or a soundtrack of Pink Floyd the Wall or The Who's Tommy!). Obviously there are those who will play POTA soundtracks over and over again and good for them.

Anyone claiming I am telling people they are wrong if they choose to listen to the soundtracks is putting words in my mouth - I have not said or suggested this.

Nevertheless, I am astounded at the number of people (other than Rory who we all know is a die hard Goldsmith fan) who have said they do listen to POTA soundtracks regularly. More than I originally thought for sure.

I 100% agree the release of ESCAPE is to be celebrated - it also means all the movies are now officially represented on CD.

LIke most artists who look back at their older work, I am sure that Apemania sees where they could have improved upon the mannequin whenever they see the photos. I don't think they've been commissioned to do a new Zira mannequin for awhile, but I know that what they will produce now will be a thousandfold better than what you see on their website.
My favorite Apemania bust is the Dr. Milo one.

I was speaking with Ty Templeton recently and he’s told me there’s something very exciting that people can look forward to in the next issue of SS.

I’m so excited about it I have decided if it’s the only thing in the magazine it’s going to be worth at least twice the cover price.

Can you tell us anything?

When can we expect the new issue?

And by the way – when I recently criticized SS by saying the latest issue was not showing the same value for money as previous issues – of course I should have mentioned that the issue I was referring to was only worth 1 ½ times the cover price….sorry if I came across as being greedy!

Anyone who ever says that "Man evolved from apes!" doesn't know what
they're talking about.

Man and the modern great apes share a common ancestor that goes back
millions of years. How many millions? No one knows for sure (and we
many never know because fossil remains may be rare or not exist), and
we may never know for sure exactly the path of our evolution, hence the
"theories." But it remains a scientific FACT, not something that is a
belief, that ape and man are closely related -- and what's so bad about
that?

No, it's not a fact, it's a theory. Natural selection is a fact, mutation and adaption are facts, but since we can't go back in time to see anything long-term, it should be treated as a THEORY. People should give respect to the fact that the scientific evidence can be interpreted multiple ways.

When I clarified my original statement I said I was talking about people who are sitting down having a brewskie or whatever having a listen to music and go looking for a POTA soundtrack.

Without judging, I was thinking such a person would be rare, and while there are more of these people than I thought – there still are not so many.

Even using it as background music is probably different to homing in on it to select….

It’s a shame some people wanted to make it personal but you do get that eh?

Oh boy, here we go!

Evolution is not a theory, it is a scientific fact. It's basic
biology. There are only theories as to HOW things evolved, but it's a
fact that all life on this planet evolved form simple forms of life to
more complex. Man is the most complex ape that has evolved on this
planet -- so far -- and yes, we are apes. You can't ague with the DNA,
and we're so close genetically to the chimpanzee that we're practically
a type of chimpanzee, or the chimpanzee is a type of human.

It all depends on how you want to look at it. Now, anyone here got
something against chimpanzees?

-- Rory

In biology, evolution is change in the genetic material of a population
of organisms from one generation to the next. Though changes produced
in any one generation are normally small, differences accumulate with
each generation and can, over time, cause substantial changes in the
population, a process that can result in the emergence of new species.
The similarities among species suggest that all known species are
descended from a common ancestor (or ancestral gene pool) through20this
process of gradual divergence.

Just like to say thanks to those who voted on my latest 2 polls.

But I am really disapointed that there was such a low turn out of voting.

Anyway thanks to those that took the time to vote.

I've been collecting soundtracks since around '75. The first I ever bought myself was Rozsa's 'Golden Voyage of Sinbad'. At first I bought them as mementos of the movies themselves but these days it's only the music that counts. Some of the crappiest movies ever made might feature some of the most evocative and memorable music.

Goldsmith's POTA has always been a tough one for me. If I judge the score for the reason it was originally intended - to accompany and punctuate images unfolding on the screen - it is easily one of the greatest scores ever written.

To judge it as a pure listening experience - divorced from the images - there are many moments to enjoy but it is not a disc I would choose to play over dinner.

I have all the APES scores and they are the only exceptions to my rule - they're souvenirs of the movies themselves. Beneath is interesting from a technical point of view but as music it does nothing for me. Escape is fun and probably the most accessible on it's own. Conquest and Battle are IMHO, damp squibs.

There are many scores I would choose to listen listen to over 'chart' music, by Goldsmith, Barry and Morricone et al, but sadly, the Apes aren't among them.

That said, I'm about to place my order for the 'Escape' soundtrack now.

Peter, I am sorry I didn't participate in your vote because I skimmed the question, and I thought you were asking about the human guest stars, and I'm really bad with names--plus I am not that familiar with the TV series...so I immediately thought three strikes!! I'm out!! But now that I am really reading the question with my full attention, it was a real good poll!!

I found an interesting factoid by accident.
I had met William Windom once before,
he performed his Thurbur One-Man-Show
at my high school.  I mentioned meeting
him back then.  And he told me that the
guy who played Friar Tuck in Robin Hood,
Eugene Palette, had gone to school there.
I was looking the other day for some sort
of evidence of that and discovered that
Roddy McDowall had also gone to school
there, and like myself, was persona non
grata. Though unlike Roddy, I was not
expelled, after a couple of years I was
asked not to return.  Even back then I
guess I was a bit of a trouble maker.

Yes, I did, and I really like that show. I've even been renting the
DVDs from Netflix to see episodes I missed. There's a first season
episode where some of the boys go to a POTA marathon at a local theatre
-- though when they get there everyone is wearing chimp masks -- I've
never heard of that happening in POTAdom, and I guess they didn't want
to pay to license Goldsmith's music from PLANET because when the film
is playing (which they don't show), the music is from something else.

By the way, if you can, watch NOVA this week -- and I mean the PBS

It goes back to the time when we were all much younger and TV was a collective shared experience. As opposed to watching a DVD or videotape which is a "private" experience (so to speak), you know that there are other people out there watching the same program with the same interest as you- even if it's a station like TNT 10 years back when they used to do these overnight mini-marathons of BENEATH, CONQUEST, and BATTLE. You knew you weren't the only person watching it, and there's something comforting about that.

To give a different example, back in the 70's when CBS ran 'The Wizard of Oz' annually (can't remember which Holiday they did that at), something like 70% of American televisions were tuned in that night. So it was literally a shared experience. That's something we'll never see again save for a major television event like the Super Bowl.

and Battle are IMHO, damp squibs.

There are many scores I would choose to listen listen to over 'chart'
music, by Goldsmith, Barry and Morricone et al, but sadly, the Apes
aren't among them.

That said, I'm about to place my order for the 'Escape' soundtrack now.

Dave

Looks like it got deleted. It got pretty heated and R-rated. Was
funny though. Basically someone was bitching that the CD doesn't have
any bonus tracks (for which he took a great deal of flack), then
another person started listing some possible ones that included
recordings of Jerry Goldsmith bodily functions. Anyway.... history.

Here's a question that will bake your noodle.
If the Templars intended the U.S. to be the new

could the Earth also have been similar sort of
"New World" for interstellar or even inter-

have collapsed trapping them for eons?

No.  In the season opener Sheldon went
back to Texas after being betrayed by his
friends.  But he returned with them after
his mother his everyone was entitled to
their opinion as far as the theory of evolution.
Sheldon said it wasn't a theory, it was fact.
To which she said, "That's your opinion."
So it was more related to this discovery
that an hominid older than Lucy was more
human than ape.  I also heard an interesting
discussion on the radio that Neanderthals
were more ape than man.  And that we had
basically just appeared on Earth with no
direct connections to them at all.  And we
come full circle to the Divine Intervention /
Traveling Alien Intervention Theories.  Bam!

That radio show must have consisted of idiots. DNA says it all. Listen, we're nothing special like some people want to believe. We are animals from this planet!! We didn't come from outer space like Battle Star Galactica entails, nor were we sculpted from clay by a divine being. We Evolved!!!! We share DNA with all creatures on this planet!! The most with chimps and bonobos, gorillas not being too far behind!! Neanderthals were once thought to be so closely related that mixture was seen as possible with modern homo sapiens!! Though most do not belive that now, the jury is still technically out on the issue!!

Well, I still say we're all playing a video game.
The video game is "Earth" and the slogan to the game is, "Earth is What You Make It."

Only through ones death is the game over.
The game is then unplugged and we then have the option to play again or play other games available.
"Earth" is currently at the top of the charts with 6.8 billion players online and climbing.

And I dare anyone to prove me wrong. :o)

i always thought that conquest was the best. being only 12 when it was released and playing piano, oboe, and sax the theme esp, i loved. those instruments are used alot, along with brass. to me it perfectly fits in its time and ours and it was the most progressive and atonal but in a jazz chromatic way and i dont care for jazz. it employs the best elements from some of goldsmiths cues it keeps it part of the musical family of apes themes and it is to me the only one that does not sound dated. it was so cool to me at the time and i guess its just part of my dna now. its funny that musicians and audio engineers and such have always thought this theme the best while apes fans have problems with it. i mean just the start of the film with its intro and the 1991 sprawled across a big 40ft screen when i originaly saw it about 15 times in 72,and the red gorilla it always gave me the creeps in a cool way. say what you want its great. john m

There's just a lot of Bad Science floating
around out there.  This guy was saying that
they were trying to hide the fact that the DNA
results was really already in, and they found that
Neanderthals were more closely related to apes
than we are to them. Anyone care to research
this topic?  Right now I've got bigger fish to fry.

That was the missing piece of the puzzle.
And since it was the guy who took over for
Art Bell, George Nori, yes they may have
been idiots.  The Neanderthal genome
was supposed to have been cracked
over a year ago.  Them of course there's
a conspiracy to hide the fact that we
are in no way related to Neanderthals.
Seems like every time someone needs to
sell their book there's a conspiracy involved,
whether it's left, right, or alien.   ; )  Maybe
the Vatican is involved.  The Minister of
Science is also Chief Defender of the Faith!

Well, of course I'm only kidding. But what a great idea for a motion picture, huh?
Yes there is a place called "Heaven", yes there are things called "Angels."
The only catch is, we are the angels in heaven playing a video game called "Earth."

It falls along the lines of the "Matrix" and "Avatar" but on a more grander scale, an entire matrix universe.
Great idea for a movie script while at the same time it would definitely make people think, could it be possible? ;o)

I agree with you on many of those points..  I love the way the main title opens with discordant sound with a single gorilla appearing.  Then leading to a beat that grows in both structure as more apes are revealed.  The theme first seems playful then more structured and serious till it falls apart completely with the approaching the camera and eclipsing it.
A perfect opening with symbolizing the entire film's arch all accomplished within the main credits.

thanks scott, i remember you somehow back in the 70s or the laserdisc days because of you florida address or whatever and i think when we were all trying to find the stereo elements to planet i came across you. it might of been in laserreview or pond scum , or i forgot the name of the yellow paper rag that was sold here in new york at laserland[laserdisc review, mayby] . anyway you put what i was trying to get across much more fluently. this web site is good its getting me in touch with alot of old aquantinces, such as joe russo when i replied to his add in famous monsters to be his penpal[how lame]ha.ha. in 1973-74. also of note was bruce surtees work. a perfect match for conquest, his style was always very documenterian and his use of exsisting light was great and part of the reason why transfers of conquest were always alittle grainy on purpose.most of the complaints on conquest come from people that probably did not see it in the theaters when released and dont realize that the blu-ray esp is almost exactly the way it was.i saw it when released at the embasy at 46th street and it was so vibrant even though j.lee was going for a desaturated look. it sounded so great.that is a point of contention with this film and planet especially. at every new transfer planet seems to sound worse each time. i still believe fox is just lazy and will always feel that way.i was told by bart pierce that the original sountracks were at rca and they never used them. i asked why back in 1992 when hbo was playing the apes films they looked and sounded wonderfull he said they do their own mastering and i said you should hire them to do the laser transfers. after a while it became an acromonious relationship at we parted ways. im going on to much...take care john m

The first of Fox's revamped sci-fi classics (which will presumably include a new POTA) is at the starting gate. "Predators" has signed Adrien Brody to go where Ah-nuld didn't fear to tread.
What? No muscle man like Ah-nuld (or Marky Mark)? Could this be clearing the way for Woody Allen to face off against Dr. Zauis?
"Predators" is due to hit theaters next summer. The new POTA is still M.I.A.

“Just that this project is in WAY too early development to say ANYTHING!”
