Yup. And the fact that it's imported and packed with info is the ONLY reason I drop $10 for a magazine. I remember when I first discovered magazines like Cinefantastique and Cinefex and being shocked at the cover price. As I recall though, at least one of them didn't accept advertising and that was the reason for the high price.

The articles in that magazine are always a good read. Nothing new that I recall, but it's been a while since I looked at them so I'd have to double check.

The same way they get advertisers to buy now. Plus advertisers can produce single shot ads so when people fast forward through they still see the product prominently featured. They've been doing that in one for or another since the home video boom in the mid 80's.

>>Plus why would someone go to the trouble of recording a heavily

version of a movie with commercial interuptions when they can see it

Why do people watch it on AMC when it has commercials? Or the History Channel? Or any local channel that may run the film? There's a novelty to it, that's all. "Why would people do this when they..." or "Why would people do that when they...?" is kind of overthinking it with that "semantical minutia" you recently mentioned.

I would've been surprised if they aired the Telemovies because that would have gone against the grain of the whole 'Sci-Fi Series Collection' thing they were doing. And that was a cool little thing too, because you got to see loads of stuff that had been off the air for years. Automan, anyone?

It's for the same reason that Fox included the episodes individually in the Box Set. Not much logic in a 'Complete Series Box Set' when you don't have the complete series included.

And although there are certainly some who would argue *for* that, there's a lot of fans who appreciated the opportunity to see them again. Remember, the 80's was the dryest decade for apes fans. The only significant thing that happened was the five films getting released in Hi-Fi on Playhouse Video. Not much to hang your hat on. <<<.html

Advetisers buy now mainly based on the ratings of the audience watching a program live, not on those watching it later on DVR or Tivo. And single shot ads are more the exception instead of the rule, always have been. TV stations are very reluctant to accept such static ads because they are afraid the viewer might get bored with staring at a single shot for 30 seconds and will change the channel. Any way you slice it a TV station is not going to revive the 4:30 movie when the majority (of what is to begin with is a potential audience) will be watching it via Tivo or DVR. It is just not profitable for them.

AMC operates on a whole different pardigm than WABC.

  • They are national and have a far larger potential audience than a single local station. Thus a movie that say gets a 1 rating nationally on AMC will be seen my many more people that a movie that gets a 1 rating in the New York market on WABC. Advertising is sold on a Cost per Thousand viewers basis so the CPM for a 1 rating nationally is much lower than the CPM of a 1 rating locally. Since New York is about 6% of the U.S. a movie airing on WABC would have to get a 17 rating to match the number of viewers (and CPM) of a movie getting a 1 rating nationally on AMC.
  • AMC is in the business of running old movies and their cost stucture is based on that while WABC is local station has a different cost structure and is not going to pre-empt Orpah for a month for a novelty.
  • While AMC now insert commercials films are not highly edited to fit into a 90 minute time slot.

And it is not semantical minutia or overthinking as you contend, it is in fact how I have made my living for the past 20 years working in advertising; by analyzing what is the potential audience based on viewing trends, demographics of a daypart, etc. so I can make well thoughtout recommendations to clients.

But getting back to your original assertion that a revival of the 4:30 Movie would get a big rating, if that were true WABC would have done it long ago.

My guess would be both too.  Goldsmith is HUGE among film score CD collectors.  Remember the movie INNERSPACE?  Well, the complete score was released on CD only a few weeks ago.  3000 copies made.  I got one -- even though it not a really favorite Goldsmith score -- but it's already sold out.  PLANET OF THE APES, ever since it was first released on LP in '68, has never been out of print.  I'm going to try and email Varese Sarabande and ask how many copies they've sold.

Looks like there are a lot more trees on the whole property now. Of course is they were planted 38 years ago then it is not surprizing that they are so big now.

Yeah, it's pretty remarkable.
I'd say the UCI locations are more iconic than the Century City locations. Especially since everything is still original and unchanged.
Good thing they filmed it at a University. I'm sure that had a lot to do with it as far as everything remaining original.

When I came across these links I felt like Columbus discovering America. :o)

It was also shot at UCI as well.

Not sure if this with get through -- kind of big -- can't figure out yet how else to show stuff like this -- But (and some of you may already know of this and have freeze-framed it on video), here's the sequence in PLANET where an actor playing a gorilla flips the front forehead wig piece.  Follow the frames down and you'll see his head gets caught in the spray from the hose on Heston and that soaks him and the wig piece comes lose.  The last two frames shows they fixed it for the next shot.

<http://chud.com/articles/articles/22077/1/SCOTT-FRANK-ESCAPES-THE-PLANET-OF-THE-APES/Page1.html">

By Devin Faraci

A year ago we told you that Scott Frank was writing and directing a movie that would be essentially a ground-up reimagining of Conquest of the Planet Of the Apes; called Caesar it would be about a genetically altered simian that led an ape revolution. Click here to read that initial report.

And that was the last we heard of it.

Until now. It turns out that Frank has left the project and the future of Caesar remains up in the air at Fox; my guess is that the project goes back on the shelf for the time being. Or rather that it's been on the shelf; my sources indicate that Frank has been off the movie for a little while now.

So what killed Caesar? Exactly what you'd expect from Fox: it was too expensive and seen as too dark. I'm not sure what other tone they were expecting from a movie about the end of humanity; maybe something with more uplift. I haven't read Frank's draft, but I'm guessing the film might have been too cerebral for the studio as well; Frank's a smart writer, and Fox makes movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You can see how this wasn't always a good fit.

I'm kind of bummed. Frank's take on the material sounded unique and different enough that it wouldn't have been a shameless remake of what came before. I'm always for smart, thought-provoking scifi, and that's what this was shaping up to be. Here's hoping the Planet of the Apes IP manages to stay dormant for the rest of the current regime. Maybe whoever comes next will understand that the original series was dark and daring and smart and will be interested in going that way again.

As the writer of the CHUD article pointed out, we may have to wait until a new regime at FOX. I would rather wait and see a POTA film done right than get another piece of crap like the 2001 remake.

I'm not surprised by this at all!  It really is hopeless that the Fox of today would make an APES movie anywhere near as good as the original.  Times have changed and the mindset at the studio wouldn't even make the original today, they'd say the ending was a bummer and it needs more action.  BENEATH especially wouldn't get made today.

My advice -- just watch the stuff from your childhood and be glad you were born when you were born to enjoy it.  I'm always glad I was eight years old and in the right place to see PLANET when it first came out.

Today, shallow, simple-minded SciFi like AVATAR -- which I saw and enjoyed, but thought very predictable and hardly that great -- makes godzillian $$$ and will probably get a sequel.  APES is just too cerebral a concept.  Fox tried dumbing it down in 2001 and look how that turned out.  The Fox of today is a studio run by a bunch of Landons after the operation.

The problem is that Hollywood has been making these "movies for 14-year-old boys" for a long time now, and making money at it.  Look at all the adaptations of comic book super-hero movies there are.  This is what passes for Sci-Fi these days -- Ironman --, and it ain't over yet.  I think a new regime at Fox would be just like the old regime -- play it safe and make money by not challenging the intellect of the audience.  Also, Hollywood doesn't make huge budget Sci-fi movies for just the US market anymore, they have to be sold world-wide, so they inherently have to be simple-minded so people is god-knows-where can "get it."  It's depressing.

As far as sharpness, nothing beats an HD TV. But as far as that Big Screen Cinema Feel. Nothing beats a HD Projection. And for the price, you can't beat it either. No more than $300.00

Screen size is relative -- relative to how close you sit from the screen.  If you go to a movie theatre and sit in the back, you're not watching anything much bigger than you are if you're at home watching a 40" TV that you sit seven feet.

Anyway, let us know how your LCD projector looks.  Are you going to project it on a screen or just a white wall?

The only way I would even see a new Apes film is if they looked like the PLANET OF THE APES that we all know from the 70's. The look is the best thing about the films to me.The original makeup is Planet of the Apes.
So I am glad this director bailed because he was going to make Ceasar look a regular Monkey.
To me that is not Planet of the Apes.

I totally agree.  I don't care how far Digital Capture has become it still looks and is CGI.  I  don't find watching someone playing a video game entertaining.  If I want to play a game I like hold the control stick - especially hack like Cameron.  He's only using technology first used for the film THE MUMMY.  Luck him it's progressed, as it should, it's still something he DIDN'T invent.  The man can only made movies with a lot of money.  True talent doesn't flies on its own, not cheap gimmicks like 3D..  As bad as the Burton vision of APES was it certainly isn't a prospect for Cameron.  The concept requires only the make-up the rest is character driven stories with intelligent dialog - not techno babble Cameron is used to.
No, if another APE film were to be made a simpler director would be needed, one who has conquered dramas and even classic stories, even one based on a play or book - not a person dependent on digital or special effects.

I'm planning on buying a projection screen this weekend. Once I have the whole system set up, I'll let you and everyone here know if it's worth the buy.  I'll even do a short video with the HD projector playing Planet of the Apes so you all can see the quality yourselves.

I've thought about how I'd do just this thing -- if I wanted to spend the money on it (which I don't want to do right now) -- A good LCD projector (1080p and so on), and a good projection screen (properly set up) and with small perferations in it.  Why?!!!  Because one of the things that bothers me about home video set ups is that the speakers are outside the screen.  They really should be behind the screen, which is how I'd like to do it.  But I have my doubts about how much I'd like LCD projection in the long run.  A 12' plasma screen -- now that's the thing, but the energy to run it would be terrible.  I still don't care for LCD TVs either, but I fear plasma is on the way out, so I'm happy with my plasma TV for now.

Oh no!  We're not talking POTA.... better cut this off.

I totally agree.  I don't care how far Digital Capture has become it still looks and is CGI.

I agree about CGI.  AVATAR looks mostly like a cartoon to me, but if I were to do a new POTA film, I'd replicate the look of the original, and pretty much the same makeup, but I'd CGI the mouths, much like they did with the animals in the BABE pig movies.  I think CGI as an enhancement is fine,

hello and i returned to this forum with a new topic seeing how the other one crashed as did the ship in the initial film.i luv pota and ok im actually a huge fan of star wars and star trek too.alot more than apes.but dont rule me out just yet folks as ive a revelation to share.it may be met with opposition but let me say it.trust me im not at the wrong forum seeing since im a huge fan of the classic adventures.no one can take that away from me as ill safeguard that freedom of mine.but needless to say i was reading comments about something i said.i said there were millions of pota fans.i know thats a gross exxageration but theres more than 1000s.you guys arent the only apers as there everywhere.ok maybe many arent as into pota as star trek or bsg or buck rogers-more faves of mine but who cares.its got more than a simple cult following.ill encourage anyone to prove me wrong but if they do its trivial.if i like it and everyone i know seems to like it then do the math.10xs 10 is 100.but 100 xs 10 is 1k and 100 xs 100 is 10k but wheres this pyramiding going youll ask?well its a popular hit and whats not to like about simians ruling in the chain of commands evolutionary ladder.theyre equipped with rifles, speech, and ban together.if you go beyond the horizon youll see perhaps theres many fans but few to come forward as we do here.lastly as i can def talk i hope we all had a good new year.i honestly didnt but oh well it happens each year at my residence.

For sound, use a "Surround Soundbar". Mount it on the wall (behind the screen).

Wall Mount Projection Screens are cheap on ebay as well.

HD TV's? The next new wave will be 3D HD TV's coming out in the Spring of this year.
But I'll wait a couple of years until the prices go down.
All these things add up to one awesome thing. A whole new way to see Planet of the Apes! :o)
Who needs a new movie?

i like the kiss between zira and taylor but really i like many other famous moments.the scarecrows were done primitively but worked.the costumes were ominously black with even more sinister forces behind them.the few apes who were compassionate to the plight of taylor and his crew now reduced to just him.he made it out after facing the tribunal and an accusing zaius.he befriended corneilius and his wife.they took a huge risk of aiding and abetting the astronaut.i guess at first glance the planet seemed to be ripe with fruit and subserviant dwellers at there disposal one might think.and soon that dark cloud comes rolling in with the horn.a paradise for some but not for others.i did like the revolt in the 3rd film battle for the pota and the conformity of these apes was astonishing.trained like domesticate dogs but acting as humans.ricardo or khan as i call him was very appealing in his role.a terriffic actor folks and a good man they say.luv his fantasy isle sidekick saying boss-the plane.hillarious was herve on the bonds calling bond a bully after he tried to bump him off.the fight was well deserved and provoking on the side of the apes.they were fed up with the fascist dictatorship regime of the govt.its much the same today and please dear apers, dont reelect obama.he got here in a huge mess and has made it progressively worse and more worser day by day i think.the way theyd twitch there noses was cute il say in closing.uv those appliances too and booth coleman was awesome in his role, eddy

I liked the film as its the best thing next to sliced bananas. Ok im wrong as maybe it isnt. But Tim aka,Im trying hard to be a better director but fell short in 2001 Burton is fuly capable of a better job i think. Maybe finish the series why dont he? Maybe a whole different POTA film with the theme in mind.

You don't have to look no further than YouTube.com
Just type in "TV Projector" in the search and you'll find plenty of people who own them and show them off on youtube.

Here's one Rory might be interested in. It's entitled "Plasma or Projector" :o)
In this video, the woman shows scenes from "King Kong" (close enough to apes). Although the quality of her camcorter video isn't that good.

I tend to agree. After the original annoucement last year there has been nothing but silence about the project.

I have to say that from what I had read I wasn't that happy with Scott Frank's approach. While interesting it just didn't sound like POTA to me.

When I read that the article said the movie was too dark, when I saw that it was the kiss of death. Fox wasn't going to do the movie in the first place and this was their
reason not to do it.  The original Conquest was way too dark, and the article said that Ceasar was too dark!  Are they kidding, this didn't stop them before.

I happen to know FOR A FACT that there are exactly three thousand, nine hundred, and seventy-eight die hard POTA fans within the borders of the US alone.

hello and i returned to this forum with a new topic seeing how the other one crashed as did the ship in the initial film.i luv pota and ok im actually a huge fan of star wars and star trek too.alot more than apes.but dont rule me out just yet folks as ive a revelation to share.it may be met with opposition but let me say it.trust me im not at the wrong forum seeing since im a huge fan of the classic adventures.no one can take that away from me as ill safeguard that freedom of mine.but needless to say i was reading comments about something i said.i said there were millions of pota fans.i know thats a gross exxageration but theres more than 1000s.you guys arent the only apers as there everywhere.ok maybe many arent as into pota as star trek or bsg or buck rogers-more faves of mine but who cares.its got more than a simple cult following.ill encourage anyone to prove me wrong but if they do its trivial.if i like it and everyone i know seems to like it then do the math.10xs 10 is 100.but 100 xs 10 is 1k and 100 xs 100 is 10k but wheres this pyramiding going youll ask?well its a popular hit and whats not to like about simians ruling in the chain of commands evolutionary ladder.theyre equipped with rifles, speech, and ban together.if you go beyond the horizon youll see perhaps theres many fans but few to come forward as we do here.lastly as i can def talk i hope we all had a good new year.i honestly didnt but oh well it happens each year at my residence.

oh yeah im new here and glad to be here.thanks you guys for this awesome and wonderful forum.well it could be made wonderful im saying.so far it seems in that direction.just wanted to introduce myself and you people have already taught me a great deal about pota related topics.thanks again and this is a fun place.anyways what would you do if you were in taylors place?i mean what would you do to survive and eat the minute you discovered you were stranded on the planet you once called earth?

I guess you mean, "What would you do if you were Taylor at the very end of PLANET -- forgetting what came next in BENEATH?"

Well, knowing I was at the edge of a vast wasteland, but on the shores of an ocean, I'd first see if there were any fish or other edible sea life left.  Then, I'd find a cave to live in along the shore, then I'd hope for rain and rig up a system to collect it so I'd have fresh water (that should probably be the first thing), then I'd make a comfortable place to lie down with Nova, then I'd do a lot of you-know-what, but that would probably get tired fast, as all things do, then I'd worry about things, then I'd.... Oh, I don't know!

All of PLANET is great -- not perfect -- but on a level of "magical" that none of the sequels were able to duplicate.  When you think about it in a certain way, PLANET was a freak among movies.  Nearly everything clicked just so, and I think PLANET is still a better SF film than AVATAR.

What makes PLANET great is that dispite all of it's failings, the overall film works and the proof is that it's SO FAR stood the test of time.

i like the kiss between zira and taylor but really i like many other famous moments.the scarecrows were done primitively but worked.the costumes were ominously black with even more sinister forces behind them.the few apes who were compassionate to the plight of taylor and his crew now reduced to just him.he made it out after facing the tribunal and an accusing zaius.he befriended corneilius and his wife.they took a huge risk of aiding and abetting the astronaut.i guess at first glance the planet seemed to be ripe with fruit and subserviant dwellers at there disposal one might think.and soon that dark cloud comes rolling in with the horn.a paradise for some but not for others.i did like the revolt in the 3rd film battle for the pota and the conformity of these apes was astonishing. trained like domesticate dogs but acting as humans.ricardo or khan as i call him was very appealing in his role.a terriffic actor folks and a good man they say.luv his fantasy isle sidekick saying boss-the plane.hillarious was herve on the bonds calling bond a bully after he tried to bump him off.the fight was well deserved and provoking on the side of the apes.they were fed up with the fascist dictatorship regime of the govt.its much the same today and please dear apers, dont reelect obama.he got here in a huge mess and has made it progressively worse and more worser day by day i think.the way theyd twitch there noses was cute il say in closing.uv those appliances too and booth coleman was awesome in his role, eddy

Yeah, that was a pretty cool video, AL.  I wasn't crazy about her room, or the wires around her equipment, but it was nice.  Was she showing KING KONG in it's proper aspect ratio?  Hard for me to tell because I can't get my 16X9 computer monitor to display 4:3.

Still, it's far easier to just set up a plsma TV then to have to rig what we've just seen here, and I still think speakers properly belong behind the screen, so the wall thing she did isn't anything I'd do.

ALSO... Al, did you listen to what she said about how much you'd have to spend of a "good" projector.  I really have to wonder about the quality of what you're going to get from eBay.  $300 for a project is pretty cheap and I didn't see any brand name on that item.  It screamed "Beware" at me.

Do those surround soundbars really work?  I've never heard one.

Also, I just measured my wall where -- if I wanted one -- I'd have a projection screen.  It would have to be 120" diagonally, then, being the perfectionist that I am when it comes to watching PLANET, the projector would have to be mounted so as there was no distortion of the image and the light in all areas was even.  I'd then have to sit in the perfect spot so as not to be driven nuts because this corner or that wasn't as bright as the center -- OH!  This would be a major pain in the ass!  I'm happy with my plasma.

I'm planning on buying a projection screen this weekend. Once I have the whole system set up, I'll let you and everyone here know if it's worth the buy.  I'll even do a short video with the HD projector playing Planet of the Apes so you all can see the quality yourselves.

Al

I know it's "controversial" for me to say this, but if you're an APES fan -- if you really love it -- you buy this.  Complain about what you have to spend if you must, but please buy it, because otherwise Fox might not care to provide it in the future in some kind of upgrade.

I've bought ever video incarnation of PLANET there's been, even foreign ones (well, not everyone of those), and most I don't watch anymore, but I don't complain about it.  PLANET is my favorite movie and that's that.

The original Conquest was way too dark, and the article said that Caesar was too dark!  Are they kidding, this didn't stop them before.

It's not 1972, it's not an Arthur P. Jacobs production, it's not the same Fox, and it wouldn't be the same APES.

But I have to say, that I thought it sounded interesting and if it turned out to be a very good SF film on its own terms I'd go see it, and if I liked it I'd say so.

If the 2001 debacle had turned out better I'd have had a different attitude about it -- BUT IT WAS A DISASTER!
