But regardless, I like Rick Baker's career work and looking forward to the Wolfman. My personal favorite of the all the Universal Monsters.
Loved those glow in the dark model kits when I was a kid.

I agree--but only with regard to the male apes. The female apes looked like Michael Jackson, and extremely non-ape-like. That, in my opinion, was a big mistake. But the makeup for the male chimps and gorillas was fantastic.
I think there's a lot of mistakes with the makeup, but Baker is not to blame. He takes his orders from the director. Like everyone on that picture, Burton included, he was simply a hired hand. I'll bet if you were to ask Baker -- and he was honest -- he wouldn't defend his work on that movie much.
They've been showing POTA 2001 in HD on satellite the last few weeks and I've watched parts of it again -- only because I haven't seen it in years -- and I've come to hate the new makeup design. The appliances are so close to the face, and the ape faces so flat as a result, that for me the movie is more like the "Planet of the Ape-Men Mutant Simian Somethings."

.htmlGreetings, fellows. At the last convention I went to, I met Chris Santoro, the owner of Retro Outlaw. He is always looking for ideas for t-shirt images. I told him to make apes, definitely. If anybody has any ideas of what you would like to see produced and printed on t-shirts for sale at conventions and online, feel free to contact him here, and maybe I will see more apes products made. I purchased a brown t-shirt from him with Dr. Zaius's image.

I really hate the makeup for the 2001 film. To me, that's not the way I like my apes to look....I am old school and I prefer John Chamber's makeup. And I really hate the way the female apes look...makes me sick to my stomach. It's that damned Burton, who will never be forgiven in my book.
The only cool thing that I can remember from the 2001 regurgitation is the tent structure and the costumes...not the makeup. There's so much to hate about the film....I've pushed the horrible film way back in my memory and luckily can't remember much. I prefer it that way. And thank goodness, or I may hurl.

I think it would depend on how they approached it.
If they're going to abandon the Tim Burton reimagining
then they shouldn't even bother with a Caesar type film.
The only reason to bother with that would be to answer
the questions left by his train wreck of a film. I didn't
really
have any. I could fill in the blanks in my sleep. Another
reason not to make that film -- since it's direction is pre
ordained it would be very predictable, and boring as a
result. Thade lands, get experimented with. Super
Ape Soldiers are created, and take over, etc... blah blah blah...

I can't see it. To me, personally,
if you can't play Moses, or Ben Hur,
you can't play Taylor, period. Full stop.
And with today's actors, that's tough casting.
I can't think of one! No one has the stature for
it. You need a Gregory Peck and then, maybe!

I recently watched a Fox Movie Channel showing of CHE!, and I think a set from that movie was turned into the mutant's cell in BENEATH. I've got CHE! on my DVR right now but plan to make a DVD copy, and when I do I'll post screen captures. There's also a shot in the movie that shows an area at the Fox Ranch near where Ape City was. It's pretty cool.
I also have screen captures of that Turbo Tax commercial I was talking about and will post them soon.

Ah, so there was -- and still is -- going to be a showing of the PLANET Blu-ray. (That announcement was very badly written -- which was my point.) Well, even though Blu-ray hasn't the resolution of 35mm, the print (a 35mm one) that's been transferred is mostly certainly cleaner than what they would have gotten from whatever 35mm print they were going to show, and now we'll be able to read what the panalists have to say about the movie.
By the way, James, there is high-definition 35mm film -- it's called 70mm!

.htmlNot to start a disagreement but the only higher definition to 35mm is 65 mm Todd-Ao printed on 70mm stock to accomidate the soundtracks, and projected at 30 frames per second. Playing generic 70mm would hardly be an increase because most non roadshow films just blew up their 35mm originals to 70mm. The films originaly shot on 70mm stock were still projected at 24 frames per second and the flicker was more noticable(not very hi-rez) on a bigger screen since the frame was larger and the frame rate was the same. Todd-Ao was projected on 70mm because the extra 5mm of room was for stereophonic sound directly on the film next to the film itself and in some cases the soundtrack ran across the sprockets and had a ratio of I think 2.20-1, not 2.35-1 or 2.40-1 since 1970. Correct me , its been along time since film school, John M.

I worked with him. Or rather was pulled from the scene
by him. He's a hack!. Even with Heston in that flick
along with Pachino and Quaid, and Modine. It still
stunk. He's a hack. I'd pull him out of a scene!
but only if you want it better. Hasn't made a

Sorry to post again , but forgot I-max is the highest resolution of them all, but it really only suits action films with its odd dimensions and such. It belongs in Disney Land. John M.
IMAX is 70mm, only it's shot sideways and I forget how many frames per second, higher than 24 fps.
Yes, the old "70mm Roadshow" pictures were actually shot in 65mm then printed on 70mm with magnetic sound strips.
All of it higher resolution than 35mm, but a "high definition 35mm" could be possible with a super fine grain structure and photographed with really sharp lens -- I would think.

Hi Rory,
An old movie theater recently reopened and shows
mainly classic films. At my request, they showed the first 4 POTA
films in October. I emailed the owner who said he would love to have
another "apeathon" if there was enough interest. I was told this theater
relies on volunteers, hence profit is not the main impetus. I think I
could convince him to have an annual "Go Ape" day perhaps in the summer.
How can we proceed to spread the word and drive up interest?

It's still 35mm film, but it lays on it's side
and the image takes up what would be two 35mm
frames. I believe conventional 70mm is actually only
60mm. The other 10mm is soundtrack and sprocket holes.
Any A/V geeks out there that can clear this up? I'd Google
it, but it hasn't been long enough since film school. And without

Now you made me go and look it up. Yesh!
70 mm film (or 65 mm film) is a wide
high-resolution film gauge, with higher resolution than standard 35 mm motion picture film format. As used in camera, the film
is 65 mm (2.6 in) wide. For projection, the original 65 mm film is
printed on 70 mm (2.8 in) film. The additional 5 mm are for magnetic
strips holding four of the six tracks of sound. Although more recent 70 mm
prints now use digital sound encoding, the vast majority of 70 mm prints predate
this technology. Each frame is five perforations tall, with an aspect ratio of 2.20:1. The vast majority of movie
theaters are unable to handle 70 mm film, and so original 70 mm films are shown
with 35 mm prints at these venues, in the regular Cinemascope / Panavision aspect ratio of 2.35:1.

I've never heard of that practice. I can't imagine a studio would spend the money on 65mm negative stock only to release 35mm dupe prints no matter how good the image might look. Somewhere there'd be a 70mm release and then for the majority of theatres released to, which wouldn't have 70mm projectors, they'd reduce to 35mm, but the inherent grain of the film stock would pretty much yield something that looked as if it was shot on 35mm.
You might be thinking of something else. A good place to research this is:

I think I got involved with a person when I inquired about an entry and the Wiki staff told me to forget it and they will take care of it and apologized to me. John M. ----- To Rory: Ive been to the movie site and they forgot some things about different aspect ratios and such at one time. I explained their were two types of Todd_Ao filmed in 65mm and 55mm for opining nights and previews. Yes 55mm and their were so many variables, like paramount made their own widescreen format by flipping the film on its side and such. Todd-Ao had two speeds 24fps and 30fps which was perferred by Mike Todd because less flicker. South Pacific I think was filmed twice ,once at 24fps and once at 30fps. Its a very confoluted history and I go with my film books from college and what my russian professor had taught me. Dimension 150 was todd-Ao witha set of very different lenses with all types of depth of fields. Bye John M. <.html

I agree to a certain extent. But Wikipedia is
great for a general idea of a topic or a person, if you need it fast. It's right
up there with Ebay, youtube , amazon in terms of the great ideas of the

I went where? Oh, never mind. Anyway.....
Lens manufacturer Panavision was initially founded in late 1953 as a manufacturer of anamorphic lens adapters for movie projectors screening CinemaScope films, capitalizing on the success of the new anamorphic format and filling in the gap created by Bausch and Lomb's inability to mass produce the needed adapters for movie theaters fast enough. Looking to expand beyond projector lenses, Panavision founder Robert Gottschalk
soon improved upon the anamorphic camera lenses by creating a new lens set that included dual rotating anamorphic elements which were interlocked with the lens focus gearing. This innovation allowed the Panavision lenses to keep the plane of focus at a constant anamorphic ratio of 2x, thus avoiding the over-stretched "mumps" effect found in CinemaScope. After screening a demo reel comparing the two systems, many US studios adopted the Panavision anamorphic lenses. The Panavision technique was also considered more attractive to the industry because it was more affordable than CinemaScope and was not owned or licensed-out by a rival studio. By the mid-1960s even Fox had begun to abandon CinemaScope for Panavision (famously at the demand of Frank Sinatra for Von Ryan's Express
). Fox eventually capitulated completely to third-party lenses by 1967. In Like Flint, a spy spoof with James Coburn, was Fox's final film in CinemaScope.
Yes, I use Wiki -- AND I LIKE IT!
Doubt the story about PLANET going to be shot in CinemaScope is true. IN LIKE FLINT was released in March 1967, two months before PLANET started shooting.

Again it was going to be in cinemascope like Fantastic voyage. In fact in Marvel magazine Number 1 or an early issue, It talks about how at the last minute fox decided against this "inferior" process, And filmed it in Panavision. John M. <.html

Let's be real. Lucas did change sci-fi. Whatever
you think of "Star Wars" (I loved the first two), it created the FX
industry and sci-fi franchises as we know them today (with a little help
from POTA and "2001: A Space Odyssey"). And with "Jaws" it created the
blockbuster factory we enjoy every summer. If it wasn't for "Star Wars" we
wouldn't even have POTA2001 so bow your heads and show some
respect!!

Perhaps I should have clarified.
I meant changed it for the better.
Let's face it, Empire only gave us
a glimpse of what Star Wars COULD
have been. But they imaged of Ewoks
and the agonizing sound of Jar Jar Binks
were burnt into our respective senses and
it stinks to this day. I would take a dozen
steadily deteriorating Apes Sequels over one
or those Star Wars episodes that was the ruination
of the entire series. Let's face it! You can't kill enough
Jawas and Sandmen to come back from that. Ever!

I'm not talking about the quality, I'm talking
about, for better or worse, "Star Wars" made movie sci-fi what it is today. And
started the run to top each other with FX, which has led to the FX breakthroughs
we have today. There was "2001: A Space Odyssey' and then "Close
Encounters" came out the same year but "Star Wars" was such a success
FINANCIALLY that it led to "Blade Runner" and the Cameron flicks (Cameron said
he quit his job as a truck driver and became a movie maker after seeing "Star
Wars") and whatever else. It made sci-fi viable on a regular basis. "Star
Wars" gave sci-fi the mojo for the money men to pay for top fx as a commercial
selling point. Maybe that's a bad thing, maybe it's FX over story but it
happened because of "Star Wars". I think it's a good thing, because on the rare
occasion they want to tell a good story, the FX are up to snuff.
