According to Joe Russo's book Star Trek had nothing to do with POTA. The original film was approved by Zanuck based on the box office of Fantastic Voyage four weeks after that film opened. Star Trek was only on the air two weeks at that point, not long enough to make any impact. Plus in those days movies studios didn't approve films based on what was popular on TV.
Also, Star Trek was never a hit on network TV. It barely escaped cancellation in 1967 and was only renewed in the spring of 1968 because of letter writing campaign (which occurred long after POTA has opened). And Gunsmoke had nothing to with Star Trek's cancellation. Gunsmoke was a CBS series. Star Trek aired on NBC.

.htmlQuite frankly, I just think STAR TREK is way too different from POTA for having influenced/affected it. I just think POTA could have virtually NO influences to begin with, apart all those seemingly-popular sci-fi books in the fifties. Nothing cinematic, even.
Since I had a surgery intervention in June (spinal herniation), and I spent my summer doing anything (LOL), I just purchased the STAR TREK ORIGINAL SERIES SEASON 1 and the DVD box-set of the first 5 movies. What can I say? Amazing, astonishing. I fully came to appreciate the real deal. But POTA is still millions of times ahead of it.

.htmlwhile I like Star Trek I find it strange that it is so often 'creditted'
as being the best and the most influential of SCI FI - I guess it is a
case of where you live - down here during the '60's and 70's Lost In
Space, Dr Who and a show called the Samurai were more influential on
kids than Star Trek.

.html.html Hey gang.
I did a little video test of Conquest running through my projector.
The video screen is about 6 feet wide from side to side. This is the projector that cost me $300 on ebay.
Now if you look closely at the screen during video close ups you can see lines on the screen. This is because the projector runs 800X600 resolution. Kinda of like Super VGA or TV resolution. Anything higher than this resolution would be HD. At least 720p HD. But from a distance the lines are hardly noticeable. Much like when you watch a boobtube TV. Lines are unnoticeable from a far.
Also the projector, I'm currently keeping in my bedroom because I have way too much furniture in my living room. Mostly wall units that will make it impossible for me to setup a decent home theater. My livingroom is quite small. But anyhow here it is....
www.potacollective.com/conquest_projection.mpg
Al
P.S. My LG Led Projector will soon be arriving by mail and that's the one I'll be mounting on the ceiling and aimed at the projector screen you'll see on the right side of this video. It's a long white rod near the ceiling you'll see as I pan around the room with the lights on. So once the LG projector is installed on the ceiling, it'll be aiming towards the right of this sceen (currently being used in this video) which by the way is a simple window shade. The LG is also 800X600 but much better quality because of the higher contrast and Led lighting. Once I have the LG completely setup, I'll make a better POTA projection test. Also forgive the quality of this video. Not the greatest camcorder on the planet. :o)

Everything on the 35th Anniversary 2-disc DVD from 2004 is on the 2008 Blu-ray plus more. The image is improved with truer color, less scratches and flaws and flicker, though I think the final shot is too bright. I also think the Blu-ray DTS-Master HD soundtrack has better fidelity, but not the greater left/right stereo separation of the Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio of the DVD.
I'd still keep the standard DVD though because you never know where or when you might want to play the movie and you might not have a Blu-ray player. Best thing is to put both discs in one case.

Quite frankly, I just think STAR TREK is way too different from POTA for having influenced/affected it.

So, Al, you get one projector and now you're getting another -- better one? Did you waste your money on the $300 one?

Subject: [pota] OT (I guess) :Conquest Projection
Hey gang.
Al

You're right! I was thinking of this . . .
Gunsmoke was TV's No. 1 ranked show from 1957 to 1961 before
slipping into a decline after expanding to an hour. In 1967, the show's 12th season, CBS planned to cancel the
series, but widespread viewer reaction (including a mention in Congress and
pressure from the wife of the head of programming at CBS) prevented its demise.
The show continued on in a different time slot: early evening on Mondays instead
of Saturday nights.
and this . . .
The threat of cancellation loomed during the show's second season.[8] The show's fanbase conducted an unprecedented letter-writing
campaign, petitioning NBC to keep the show on the air.[9] NBC renewed the
show, but moved it from primetime to the "Friday night death slot", and substantially reduced its
budget.[10] Roddenberry
reduced his direct involvement in Star Trek before the start of the
season to protest the changed timeslot, and was replaced by Fred
Freiberger.
The series was canceled in its third season, despite the protests of a
renewed letter writing campaign. Marketing personnel of the network complained
to management that the series' cancellation was premature. New techniques for
profiling demographics of the viewing audience later showed that Star Trek had
been highly profitable for advertisers. The revelation came too late to resume
production of the series.
In a message dated 2/6/2010 9:34:07 A.M. Central Standard Time,
JamesA1102@... writes:
Also, Star Trek was never a
hit on network TV. It barely escaped cancellation in 1967 and was only renewed
in the spring of 1968 because of letter writing campaign (which occurred long
after POTA has opened). And Gunsmoke had nothing to with Star Trek's
cancellation. Gunsmoke was a CBS series. Star Trek aired on NBC.

There is an interesting parallel to the POTA TV series. On of the chief complaints about that series was that the profiling demographics showed that the show did very poorly among viewers over 50. The POTA audience was mainly children, teenagers and young adults. At that time, that type of demographic profile was not wanted by advertisers.
However, over time things changed. Viewers over 50 became the group least wanted by advertisers while younger viewers became the most highly sought after. So the POTA series may well have lasted beyond 13 episodes had it been on several years later.

With the economy the way it is, directors (and
even movie stars) don't have the power they used to. And ultimately they're only
as good as their box office. A franchise like POTA can recharge the box office
batteries and give them the clout to make their projects. But Fox seems to be
the most controlling studio and their franchises are not as popular as those of
other studios.
In a way, I think it would be easier to step in,
because there's no where to go but up, like when they rebooted "Batman". They
won't be compared to a great "last one", like Del Toro, who signed up to do "The
Hobbit".
I think Fox will have to make a decision. Either
they back off and let the talent do it right, or they have another "Alien vs.
Predator" or "Fantastic 4" on their hands that go nowhere.

That's what I said, the George Clooney Batman
sucked so there was nowhere to go but up (hey, the director of "Up" can do
"Caesar"!).
Hollywood is doing well with the big FX pictures,
but indies and the riskier films the "A" list wants to do are suffering.
It's hard to get those greenlit (someone had to mortgage their house to get
"Hurt Locker" made, while Hollywood pats itself on the back).
The franchise flicks are a license to print money
and can help one's bankability to do a "Hurt Locker".

Yeah, that worked.
Well, all I can say is that this kind of thing would be a major investment for me, because I'd first want a projector that could display 1080p, then I'd want a good screen, one made of reflective materials. I'd have to have a room dedicated to it, including the right kind of chairs and such, surround sound with good speakers and so on. It would be a major undertaking. For now, I'm happy with my plasma.
But, if you have to have a hobby, Al, this is a good one, but you've got a long way to go.

So the POTA series may well have lasted beyond 13 episodes had it been on several years later.
I'm still trying to figure out what kept that awful "Logan's Run" TV show on as long as it did!

All of Planet seems to be brighter than the DVD version. On the other hand, Beneath seems to be a shade darker.
I'm confused. Are you saying PLANET is brighter on the standard DVD version? I'd say the Blu-ray is brighter. In fact, I have to turn down both brightness and contrast when I watch the PLANET Blu-ray, but Blu-ray (1080p) is generally brighter with everything.

I don't believe a big budgeted POTA movie is the way to go. Maybe a new TV series or an "indie" low budgeted author movie, featuring ingenuity and well crafted make up.
We need great and brilliant storytelling/ screenplaying, not a big budgeted mess. Hollywood is no more what it used to be in 1968.
Give me a low budget and a skilled director, and that's the POTA movie we want. Social commentary, not explosions. Intriguing ideas, not A-list actors.
T.C.
Hollywood is not the dream factory, but the factory of broken dreams. (OK, I got that out of my system.)
Anyway, let's all try to keep perspective here and remember that the studio is Fox and Fox is what it's produced in the last decade. The track record with APES is pretty bad. Fox has run the ALIEN and PREDATOR franchises into the ground. They're doing a bad job keeping X-MEN going.
Movies have pedigrees. The original POTA had a very good one, the remake far less. Today at Fox the studio seems populated by mongrels. We'll most likely get a bastard child here.

I have both discs in one case for each film. Part of the reason for that was that the disc holders for the Blu-Ray collection really sucked. The other reason is that I have kept the DVD versions. I have a five disc DVD player which allows me to play all five films in succession without having to change discs.
OK, now when was the last time you had a GO APE marathon, and when is the next time you're planning on doing it?
And just out of curiosity, has anyone here ever had a GO APE 2.0 marathon? I mean has anyone ever watched all five movies, then watched all 14 TV episodes, then watched all 13 cartoon episodes -- IN ONE SITTING, only taking bathroom breaks? I've never even tried such a thing. I think I'd go nuts.

The Hughes Bros. were on the roll call last time
before Burton got the job. So was Robert Rodriguez, who is already rebooting
their "Predator". Neither would be a top choice for me.
Pierre Morel has a good first name for the job but
is already working to reboot "Dune". The other two they mentioned, I dunno. "V
For Vendetta" was OK, I guess.
Kathryn Bigelow might be good ("Near Dark",
"Strange Days") if she changes her mind. The guy who did "Let the Right One In"
is an inspired choice. I hear that's good. So they aren't totally without
imagination.
It's hard to tell whether it's a sucky script or
not, or if people are turning it down because of scheduling or other reasons.
There's plenty of other directors out there that haven't been mentioned yet so
we'll see how it goes. I'm actually surprised and pleased by some of the people
they tried to get. Maybe they'll try for some other good ones.
Let the right one in.

What is it with Fox. They were the studio to hate back in the Laserdisc days with their over pricing and poor quality. But to give them credit they were the first studio to sell movies on video back in 1977 with Magnetic Video. The reason they were forward thinking then was the personel at fox were probably alot of the oldtimers from the original Ape days, so their was some imagination and forward thinking going on. The 1980s came and the Apes were all but forgotten except for the playhouse video box set which introduced us to the Beneath debacle of poor or misplaced sound effects and that started some of the people on this web site and myself to start the complaining and meet the people at the video part of Fox ie: Bart P,Lewis L etc. What has been happining is that the glory days where writers and directors had more control in the way a movie got made with the exception of the money is gone. At Fox though it seems that the current game players and
money men are stooges to managment. Fox I finnaly realized is run by the stupidist f$$$s that were ever placed on earth. Yeah James Cameron gives them his " every decade saving the studio" picture and Fox acts like their the biggest guys on the block. Im a forever optimist when it comes to Apes but I finnaly admit that Fox are incredible morons that wouldnt know a great idea if it fell on their lap, and when they do get it they are compelled to destroy it. Im ashamed to be apart of it with the talking on phones, writing letters, buying the Apes pictures many times over, and generally caring about my favorite films. If they cant see that a smart film, not an exploitive film(in the worst sense of the word)should be green lighted we must all forget it and dream about the old days when men not jackoff children ran the studio. Screw it up now Fox and you will be the biggest laughing stock Hollywood has ever seen. John M <.html

While Cameron took lingo, terms, and mechanical weapons from the novel STARSHIP TROOPERS and applied it to ALIENS and AVATAR.
Combined two original OUTER LIMITS episodes and created TERMINATOR.
Watched CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and made an underwater version, ABYSS, even re-creating the events as to how the alien objects are first seen - first a fly-by, but w/a sub instead of a plane. There's even a small "sprite-like" one that flits about. Ending with huge "Motherships"
I knew someone who worked on TITANIC and he told me how Cameron fought with the cinematographer; how he insisted on certain camera angles over those suggested by the director of photography. Seems he was going home at night and studying camera angles from "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" on the Criterion Laserdisc.
Avatar is nothing more than, yet another original episode of the OUTER LIMITS with FERNGULLY THE LAST RAIN FORREST and THE BATTLE FOR TERRA
He clever enough to side step the obvious by using technology/effects to throw people off the scent and being exposed to most. Thing is the technology used for AVATAR is a simple advancement to what was first used on THE MUMMY about 10 years ago. Without it being first used there he'd still not have his way.

Why is it an "influence" on Roddenberry but a theft by Cameron? Even Cameron says the only reason that lawsuit happened was because he didn't have the money at the time to fight it and his studio didn't want to bother backing him. He calls Harlan Ellison "a parasite who can kiss my ass".
Maybe I'll watch those 2 "Outer Limits" in next few days and judge for myself. I've seen them, and it's Cameron who's the parasite. It's also obvious that he sold his soul to the devil a long time ago. Go ask Linda Hamilton if you don't believe me, Veetus.

Yeah, I agree with that. "A -list" directors want
certain concessions, that's usually why they're on top, their movies stand out
because the studio stooges have to play nice. It does look like studios are
going for new directors and new stars (such as the new "Spiderman" and I just
heard today Fox is going to reboot "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" from way back in 2005)
to save money and headache. The franchises are the stars these days. So I think
the "A"s will have to compromise more to stay in the game.

studio going in a seemingly wrong direction with a certain sci-fi
movie we kinda like, here's some good news from the world of classic film
science-fiction. Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" is considered a cornerstone of the
genre and has had a checkered history in it's distribution. Chop, chop here,
chop, chop there, here a chop, there a chop; I don't think it's been shown in
it's original version since 1927 in Germany. But recently tons of footage has
been found, and I think there's enough to restore it to it's original length
(210 minutes?).
In any case, it is premiering and streaming online
this Friday and Roger Ebert is mighty pleased. Here's the details:

Roddenberry was probably inspired by FORBIDDEN PLANET'S
federation of exploratory spaceships, and standing in forced field tubs as
a ship reduces from light speed and was inspired to create STAR
TREK.
While Cameron took lingo, terms, and mechanical weapons from the
novel STARSHIP TROOPERS and applied it to ALIENS and AVATAR.
Combined two original OUTER LIMITS episodes and created
TERMINATOR.
Watched CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and made an underwater version, ABYSS, even
re-creating the events as to how the alien objects are first seen - first
a fly-by, but w/a sub instead of a plane. There's even a small
"sprite-like" one that flits about. Ending with huge
"Motherships"
I knew someone who worked on TITANIC and he told me how Cameron
fought with the cinematographer; how he insisted on certain camera angles
over those suggested by the director of photography. Seems he was
going home at night and studying camera angles from "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER"
on the Criterion Laserdisc.
Avatar is nothing more than, yet another original episode of the
OUTER LIMITS with FERNGULLY THE LAST RAIN FORREST and THE BATTLE FOR
TERRA
He clever enough to side step the obvious by using technology/effects
to throw people off the scent and being exposed to most. Thing is
the technology used for AVATAR is a simple advancement to what was first
used on THE MUMMY about 10 years ago. Without it being first used
there he'd still not have his way.

The posters were all in the five dollar range now half of my posters sell for over $900 each. Inflation? The original Planet gets the big bucks...I was offered $1500 for the three sheet two years ago and he was selling it for $2500, I kept it. The original Planet and the Go Ape posters of all sizes is where you can make a killing. Suprisingly Battle seems to get some of the most dollars of the sequels, cant figure? Also color contact sheets from Planet(68) get about 20-50 bucks a piece. In general they all can get alot of money..John M.

THE ODD COUPLE played at Radio City Music Hall while 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY was at the Capital. 2001 was the last film to play there. ODD COUPLE opened in June 1968 and played for like three months at Radio City, one of longest runs in the theatre's history (King Kong only played there for two weeks in '33!)

Agreed. POTA should always be makeup.
I would have made an exception when Kim

her in stick on blue appliances and then used
computers to erase the edges or give it more
flexibility, as long as it didn't look like they
had. Just so she could have taken them
off between takes. If she would have done it.

I think the main problem with this one would be that
Jupiter has no surface. Being a Gas Giant it
wouldn't.
And even it's core would he covered in an ocean of
liquid metallic hydrogen, with such extremes of
heat,
pressure and electro magnetize, I doubt even an
artificial body could survive. Anyone remember
that probe built like a tank that the Russians sent
to Venus? At least they got a couple of
pictures.
Call Me Joe (1957) is a science fiction story by
Poul Anderson about an attempt to explore the surface
of the planet Jupiter using remotely controlled artificial life-forms. It focuses on the feelings of
the disabled man who operates the artificial body.

Just because these things exist doesn't mean Cameron knew about them
or had read them/seen them/whatever.
Cameron is a target because of the movie's success. As he has been
for every one of his movies.

Simple advancement? I think not. Have you even seen AVATAR?
And the work in THE MUMMY wouldn't have existed with Cameron's T2
advances in CGI....

.htmlOK I spent a couple of hours last nite searching for this Easter Egg on the Planet Blu-Ray disc and couldn't find it. I even went to some websites that review discs and will tell you where the Easter Eggs are and they say there are no Easter Eggs on the POTA Blu-Ray: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1804/planetapes1968.html".
Has anyone else found this Easter Egg on the Blu-Ray and remember the path?
