Rory, where did you or are you living on Long Island. I lived in Bayshore from1960-1991 then moved to Holtsville.. John M.
My parents were from upstate New York. In '62 my father got a job in Garden City, Long Island and got an apartment in Hempstead. We lived there until 1970, when my parents were then planning on moving to a house in Levittown, but then they seperated and I moved back upstate with my mother. Didn't see PLANET in the city, but in several theatres on the island. By 1970 though I was old enough to figure out that my Great Aunt, who lived on Staten Island, could take me into the city to see BENEATH in Times Square, so that's how I did that. Only wish now I was that smart in '68.

I also looked for this yesterday and couldn't find it. I did see that
the excerpts from the Mego commercials are included in the
documentaries. Maybe that's what the Easter Egg-poster was thinking
of?

I didn't get home from work until twenty after eleven, but I still managed to watch POTA on Blu-ray for its anniversary and enjoyed it quite a lot. Turned down the contrast, brightness and color a bit and was very happy with the picture quality -- which was fantastic.
Couldn't care less about any Mego commercial easter egg. Don't believe the Blu-ray has one. Isn't it in the merchandising of Apes featurette?

OK I spent a couple of hours last nite searching for this Easter Egg on the Planet Blu-Ray disc and couldn't find it. I even went to some websites that review discs and will tell you where the Easter Eggs are and they say there are no Easter Eggs on the POTA Blu-Ray: http://bluray. highdefdigest. com/1804/ planetapes1968..html".
Has anyone else found this Easter Egg on the Blu-Ray and remember the path? <.html

I have no idea what the marquee was originally like. I'd also like to see photos of what the lobby display was like. Can't recall what picture played at the Capital before PLANET opened, but I know they shut the theatre down for a week to get ready for the APES engagement. Must have had something to set up.
Somewhere in the universe there has to be photos.

.htmlI never saw any of the POTA films in any of the big theaters in Manhattan until 2008 when the Ziegfeld showed Planet for the 40th Anniversary.
Though, I did see Marooned with James Francicus at the Loews State on Broadway.

dear group, found two different style movie posters on marooned--the film won an oscar for best cinematography in 1969- franciscus played astronaunt stone starring with james is gregory peck and in 69 starred in an arthur p jacobs production called the chairman directed by j lee thompson that later on directed battle in 73. from william burge |

Well, Rodriguez did direct Ricardo Montalban, so
he's got more "Conquest" experience than the others. : )

Don't think I'll like it if it's him, but I've read he's already turned it

.html
.html
Chris Nolan, director of the rebooted "Batman"
franchise, is said to be doing double duty as a "consultant" on what the f
Warner Bros. should do with their stalled "Superman" series. Supes is kind
of in the same boat as POTA; the last movie did well but not great and left a
lot of fans disappointed. Personally, I liked "Superman Returns". Well, most of
it. It was kind of like the "King Kong" remake by another filmmaker revisiting
his passion: a lot of good stuff but some over the top stuff that didn't
work as well, and too long. I think Bryan Singer is a good director with a
passion for telling relevant stories (now that he's back in the Fox stable I
wouldn't mind his taking POTA for a spin, though he's spoken for by "X-Men").
But his incorporating elements from the original Christopher Reeve flick was
confusing, and borrowing the original's silly plot was a killer.
In any case, the movie didn't do as well as an
expensive tentpole should and it was a poor return on what, like POTA, had been
in development a long time. Even Tim Burton was involved in 1998 and if it had
worked out he probably wouldn't have done POTA. But the plug was pulled on him
(according to the book "Superman vs. Hollywood", Burton was offered "Superman" a
second time after the "success" of his POTA but he declined). Despite their
misgivings, Warner Bros. wants a (drum roll please) new "Superman" movie anyway.
The idea of bringing in a "consultant"director who seems to know what he's doing
artistically as well as financially seems like a good one. Should Fox do that
with POTA? In a sense they've already done that by bringing in "godfathers" like
Ridley Scott for the "Alien" prequel and Robert Rodriguez for the "Predator"
reboot (the word on "Predators" is pretty good; it comes out this summer). Who
would make a good POTA consultant (this could be someone big since they wouldn't
actually direct)? Maybe it would be another avenue to Save
Our Apes.

According to Joe Russo's book Star Trek had nothing to do with POTA. The original film was approved by Zanuck based on the box office of Fantastic Voyage four weeks after that film opened. Star Trek was only on the air two weeks at that point, not long enough to make any impact. Plus in those days movies studios didn't approve films based on what was popular on TV.
Also, Star Trek was never a hit on network TV. It barely escaped cancellation in 1967 and was only renewed in the spring of 1968 because of letter writing campaign (which occurred long after POTA has opened). And Gunsmoke had nothing to with Star Trek's cancellation. Gunsmoke was a CBS series. Star Trek aired on NBC.

Though, I did see Marooned with James Francicus at the Loews State on Broadway.

I tell yaa, everytime I see Jerry Goldsmith I get very sad and happy. In New York, NY, which is Manhattan, my mother in the 1950s gave voice lessons and piano lessons and did studio work and played in soundtracks and orchestras for many known and unknown people. She came across J. Goldsmith at a voice lesson she was giving to Danny Kaye and subsquintly got to know him and see him occasionially. They talked about both being Jewish and having some same relatives and such and my mother became a fan and was using his piano teacher as her piano teacher(Jakob Gimbel) as long as she could before she moved out to the suburbs with my father. My mother had family (distant named Rapparport). That photo of Jerry you posted was the same picture my mother got of him in a scrapbook, though it was taken about 7 years after their meeting in N.Y. Anyway, my mother is gone and so is Jerry and it just makes me a bit meloncholy that so many many of the people we all knew are
gone and it makes one realise their own mortality. Be Good. John M.

It had a glass entrance on both sides before you entered the theater and it was loaded with photos and lobby cards , and all sizes of posters and cardboards standees. One photo was stolen cause you could see the paper ripped under where the photo should be. Then I was thinking of doing that, but my father stopped me. Once you entered their were tons on Black and white photos festuned all over the place. Because of this my father seeing I loved the movie and photos called 20th Century Fox in Manhatten and spoke to Jerry Andersen who was in charge of publicity and he sent to my home the complete set of black and white glossys in a manila envelope with a Conquest Postage stamp which I still have. Great memories..John M.

Funny what was thought of the Ziegfeld back then. I was unimpressed with it.

I believe Jakob Gimbel plays piano on the POTA soundtrack.

"Legacy" came out the same time as the Head (I remember it was around the time
the "King Kong" remake came out on DVD). I didn't get the "Legacy", I just got

.htmlSo true. When I watch a new movie now I almost always come away thinking just how plain and mundane the music is. Most scores today are horrible, with little musical depth. They are only driven beats or long winy strains of synths. There is no soul to the music. Goldsmith meshed with the visual and secured a heart into a film. He was able to reach in creating a 3D depth within the sonic realm. His music supported both the scene, and even dialog creating conviction and life to the characters and their plight; no matter how crafted or even lacking in craft the film was.
I never met him, but he imbuded a sound that played and spoke to me on an emotional level beyond words, beyond the visual. ...I miss his presence so much.
I remember reading that angels are beings of light and their ranking is measured in degrees of color with music being their source of communication, or language to the Most High.
Having experienced the talent that was and is Goldsmith with his well versed musical vocabulary - it is true.

It made me sad when Goldsmith dies because I' knew I'd never get to meet him. It makes me sad to go to the movies now and know they'll never be another movie with "Music by Jerry Goldsmith" on it. I've been listening to his music since I was eight years old -- even before that, though I didn't know it. Yeah, things just aren't the same now.
I believe Jakob Gimbel plays piano on the POTA soundtrack.

dear group, to see the greatness of jerry goldsmith on the inside of the gatefold of the lp of planet of the apes charlton heston makes a great comment on goldsmith music to the film is nothing more than brillant. when my parents divorce in aug 1966 my father took me and my brother to memorial theatre to see the blue max and when watching that film the music took you places along the films dogfight scenes with the german byplanes with greatness. the man that coducted the soundtrack was jerry goldsmith what a genius he was a true gentleman of the cinema . jerry made planet of the apes a true timeless classic that it is. when i was 12 i loved planet so much i went down to globe shopping city and bought the lp for four dollars and 44 cents- wow what a bargain. all i can say god bless jerry goldsmith heaven has a great conductor for the ages . from william

I also met Rod Serling's widow, who wasn't very respectful of POTA. She didn't seem to think much of it.
Probably because she knows what so many don't -- that Serling's script wasn't the one that was filmed.

I met Jerry (and his hot wife) about 10 years ago with the guy who formed the band Ape Has Killed Ape. Jerry was going to autograph my Eric Greene book but somehow he cut his finger trying so he signed it with his other hand and it's not the greatest signature. He said he didn't want to get blood on the book. I said, "Go ahead!". But he didn't seem to have the best sense of humor and didn't do it. It was after a Museum of Broadcasting event out in the parking lot and there wasn't a crowd, just me and my friend. A cool little moment. I also met Rod Serling's widow, who wasn't very respectful of POTA. She didn't seem to think much of it.

I was their at the premiere for Conquest, It was the Embassy at 46th street that was a large great sounding theater, if thats the one your talking about.

Most of the LPs out there don't actually date from 1968. Most are repressings from the early to mid-seventies. You can tell an original 1968 PLANET LP because it'll have slightly thicker cardboard, the LP itself will also be thicker, and the thing that absolutely tells you it's from '68 is a note on the disc's label telling you the original recordings were made on "35mm magnetic film."
The Project 3 label was meant to supply quad stereo to the original quad systems back in the sixties, so there was something unique about the PLANET soundtrack. Project 3 also released the soundtrack to BANDOLERO!

Theatre managers always told me too that they couldn't give me a poster, because they had to be returned to the NSS.
It wasn't until I was around 13 that I finally found mail-order places to get them. I remember one of the greatest was "The Cinema Attic" in Philadelphia. Later I discovered Jerry Orlinger's in NYC and a place called "The Movie Gallery" out on Long Island. These posters were alway "screen used" and I guess they were things that the NSS was going to throw out.

Couldn't care less about any Mego commercial easter egg. Don't believe the Blu-ray has one. Isn't it in the merchandising of Apes featurette?

Agreed. POTA should always be makeup.
I would have made an exception when Kim
was still alive. I wouldn't minded if they put
her in stick on blue appliances and then used
computers to erase the edges or give it more
flexibility, as long as it didn't look like they
had. Just so she could have taken them
off between takes. If she would have done it.

The theatre managers LIED to you lol! The next manager at that same theatre a few years later gave me all the posters I needed (no APES alas) and told me the last owner was probably saving the ESCAPE poster for someone else who asked first.
BTW I did finally get all the APES posters from Jerry Ohlinger's as well. They're a LOT more pricey these days.

Yeah, I went to The Movie Gallery when it was out in Merrick and met Marty. That guy sure could talk and talk. I got a couple rare PLANET posters from him (the ones that were like the door panels but had "Starts Wednesday, April 3rd" on them) paid only $15 dollars each. My father was with me and thought I was nuts, now those posters are worth hundreds each.
The only thing I ever remember ordering from Movie Star News was stills.

All the copies I have seen have the same warbally sound for most of the Ape commercials (there are more than one). I was disappointed that an outfit like Fox couldn't or didn't try to find the film and make a good transfer of the commercial(s).
The length of the commercial on the DVD and blu ray points to the fact that it was a dealer commercial and if that particular commercial was aired on TV, it would definitely be a shorter version. But given the fact that the commercial used a lot of prototypes that looked a bit different from the final figures, they probably didn't use it.

Yeah, the red and white label with "Master Recorded on 35mm Magnetic Film" in the upper right is an original pressing from 1968. I would assume this same master is what was used for the Intrada and Varese Sarabande CDs. What's on the film's soundtrack, and on the DVD and Blu-ray is a stereo remix from the mono downmix from the original stereo masters (in fact, how many tracks are one the original masters I don't know), but PLANET could be lovingly restored to full multi-track stereo surround IF that company known as Fox wanted to spend the money on it.

I never got that BANDOLERO! LP, but I have bought it a couple times on CD, the last being the full score from Intrada. Surprisingly, this minor film was apparently released in stereo someplace in 1968, for the stereo soundtrack is preserved and presented as 2.0 Dolby on DVD -- and it sounds wonderful.

My mother told me(in 69 ) that most soundtracks after the film soundtrack is made and edited to the film, the official sountrack is made and recorded and released on whatever medium(Lp, CD,Tape). My point is that the Lp has two different recorded themes, its true I have both. John M.

.htmlI notice on some posts my phrasing is off. I appologize. The 4 tracks apply to all Apes but Conquest which was recorded(Music) on two track. On the field during principle photography it was also 2 track stereo, as seen by the many multiple mikes on photos I have. Almost all films at that time with any budget had the audio live recorded in stereo then it was up to the studio weather to apply the stereo to movie house venues it owned or rented or if the film warrented it or if the studio was in good fiscal shape..John M.

.html I just got finishing a lower budget movie I bet some of you know, its called "The Jacket". It has alot of great stars from Adrien Brody, To Daniel Craig and all I ever think is how this movie contains all the elements of sci-fi, horror, love, mystery, drama in one package. Whenever talk of a new Apes movie I think of The Jacket. To me it shows how great writing and good direction and cast can make a wonderfull tale. The songs by Hal David and Brian Eno sung by Iggy Pop and others add to this , a heart wrenching tale, with a happy not contrived ending and it reminds me of Escape. Writing and Direction and casting are so important and I can hope that a new Apes film could be in this vain not the big budget bull that it probably will be. John M. <.html

do it to stop the authorities from such a check that would confirm that
the child was not hers. I also doubt that an autopsy would have been
able to establish or repudiate any family link.
I suppose if she knew that the child in her arms was still alive and
that it surely would be killed, in her last dying moments she did what
little she could to try to save it's life, despite the imaginable odds
against any hope of it surviving being dumped like that.
It sure made for a great dramatic ending.

But my personal explanation has always been that it wasn't her baby and she threw it away because she had not really bonded with it. After it died, there was no reason for her to carry it around.
I always thought it was silly that Cornelius was looking for a better/cleaner place for her to breastfeed, which caused them to be separated. That doesn't make any sense. It's not like the baby cares, and when your milk is ready, especially after giving birth, it's coming out no matter where you are. OK, so maybe they wanted someplace that wasn't so smelly but the whole area was supposed to smell like oil and dead fish...so it's not like they could get away from the stench.

I always thought it was because Zira was afraid that scientific
analysis would prove that the baby was too old to be her newborn, and that's
what she was trying to avoid. When the baby was first delivered in the
circus, it had a normal chimpanzee nose/muzzle. The baby in the circus
cage at the end had the John Chambers "nose job" to resemble the adult ape
appliances. If the baby that Zira held during the ship scenes had the
"nose job", it would have been more obvious that it was really she and
Cornelius' offspring, and not a primitive chimp. Maybe Zira knew that this
would be a dead give-away when the baby's body was eventually
examined. In any event, the dead baby was very buoyant, floating in
the water, so it was obviously available for examination. I'm sure the
baby and Dr. Hasslein would have both been recovered from the water rather
quickly and subjected to normal crime scene forensics. Anyway, sorry to
ramble. LOL Just giving my humble opinion.

I think she simply threw it in the water because she knew she was about to die holding her husband. Why would she also want to be holding an "animal" baby at that moment? Maybe a better question is why she just didn't leave it where it was, but when you've been shot and you know you're about to die I guess you're entitled to some bizarre thoughts and actions.

The best part other than the films themselves when they were fresh(films get beat up fast) were the long lines.... constantly! The drive ins were always the funiest with pilling in people and the playgrounds and greasy food.
