The Winter Olympics started this weekend and it really brought back some memories for me. The biggest memory is from 1980 and the USA hockey team. The "Miracle" team as they came to be called was already on their way to at least a bronze medal when they went up against the Soviet team. This was a long standing grudge match because the US team hadn't beaten the Soviet team in the past several Olympics. The game was scheduled on a Friday afternoon at 4:30. I remember sitting with my father who turned the TV on to ABC only to find out the network heads had decided to not show the game live but on tape delay later that night in prime time. Instead the local 4:30 movie came on. The movie that day was Escape from the Planet of the Apes. So I sat there enjoying Escape while my father just cursed and gripped under his breath for 90 minutes. <.html

The old Movie Star News store was great if you had all day to spend looking
through boxes of miscellaneous photos. I confess I did that more than once. He
had lots of original TV & movie photos for sale. You just had to have
patience.

I've always been amazed by that, too. And the Blu-ray credits say the
Mego commercial is courtesy of Film Archives, but I've wondered if
it's not from my Rarities DVD.... I have a hard time believing Film
Archives has the exact same warbly-sound commercial.. ..

Went to both NY places. The movie gallery was run by Marty and his wife, the were in Rockville Center then moved to Merrick. I got most of my posters and lobbys thru him they were all pristine. Jerry Ohlingers(the Batcave) I got most of my 35mm blowups and my 3sheet of Planet. The other place was the notorious Movie star News at 14st in Manhattan, then it moved to 18st in the 80s. Betty Paige was the notorius pinup girl of Irvin Claw who owned the place. John M.
Yeah, I went to The Movie Gallery when it was out in Merrick and met Marty. That guy sure could talk and talk. I got a couple rare PLANET posters from him (the ones that were like the door panels but had "Starts Wednesday, April 3rd" on them) paid only $15 dollars each. My father was with me and thought I was nuts, now those posters are worth hundreds each.
The only thing I ever remember ordering from Movie Star News was stills.

And, I know it'll be hard, but you're in Miami, so remember to get out and get some sun sometimes. Anyway, love that projector screen! Lookin' good!

The commercial is part of a set of commercials from Mego floating around since the 90's first traded among Mego collectors. All the copies I have seen have the same warbally sound for most of the Ape commercials (there are more than one). I was disappointed that an outfit like Fox couldn't or didn't try to find the film and make a good transfer of the commercial(s).
The length of the commercial on the DVD and blu ray points to the fact that it was a dealer commercial and if that particular commercial was aired on TV, it would definitely be a shorter version. But given the fact that the commercial used a lot of prototypes that looked a bit different from the final figures, they probably didn't use it.

I think she simply threw it in the water because she knew she was about to die holding her husband. Why would she also want to be holding an "animal" baby at that moment? Maybe a better question is why she just didn't leave it where it was, but when you've been shot and you know you're about to die I guess you're entitled to some bizarre thoughts and actions.

The government would have order their scientists to do an autopsy on the dead baby to check to see if it was the right baby, remember when Dr. Dixon ordered an autopsy on Dr. Milo when he killed by the gorilla at the zoo. Was the autopsy squelched by the government, did Dr. Dixon get the results from the autopsy on Milo?

This is a first for 20Th Century humans, with there being no criteria to base what the findings would or should show. This new breed of "incredible apes" might not show certain signs from birth. It might be wrong to assess them in the human way by comparison - just as sexual organs in humans aren't fully productive at birth. The capabilities for speech may not be as apparent either or as simple to detect.

The 8x10 or 11x14 lobby cards? All I ever bought in MSN were B/W photos. I got the 8x10 of the astronauts in the liferaft from APES in there.

Larry Edmunds Bookstore and Hollywood Book

8 x 10s in Hollywood. We'd have to wait for Comic Con to get stuff from

A lot of APES fans feel this way about ESCAPE, even though most serious critics will tell you it's the best of the sequels. But ESCAPE doesn't have that vital element that seems so essential to many APES fans, that being,,,, GORILLAS WITH RIFLES CHASING HUMANS.

Let's not forget Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee. That's where I got my first PLANET pressbook, which at the time was a fantastic find (mid-seventies).
There was an episode of "The Wonder Years" where they go to a drive-in to see PLANET. In the concession stand area are posters to APES films, these were got for the show at Eddie Brandt's.

Back in 1971 I went to Escape for the first time without my parents at the Brentwood theater. My friends were on line so I cut. As usual the line were around the corner. All the Apes films and the 73-74 festivals I atteneded at at no time was it not packed for atleast the first few weeks.. When I went to school to study film, I learned that it was common practice to keep figures close to the vest because simply, the Taxman! Years later with the Jaws and Star wars mass opinings and when films got very very expensive studios bragged what they made back moniterialy basically not to look foolish and to keep people coming and that continues to this day. I said this on another post a while back but a proffesor who had friends at some studios including Fox had told me in confidence that alot of films and this pertainded to "all the Apes films" made a hell of alot more than published figures. Fox said that the Apes im total made about 90-100 million
when in reality it was closer to a billion in '74 dollars.. Thats why ill always be a cynic..Love Taylor...John M.

Yes MSN was on 14th street-you had to trudge up a flight of dingy stairs to get up there.
As for the 8th Ave shop, did the owner look hairy enough to be a werewolf? If so that was Jeff's store. He reprinted APES and STAR TREK photos on cardboard paper stock and sold 'em for a buck. I still have a few in my collection.

That was in 1980, she passed away I think and her bruiser sons took over. The guys over at Ohlingers(Batcave) used to call her "The Claw". I remember Jerry Ohlinger always with a cigar and a donut I think and the place smelled like a locker but he had great stuff at one time. Out in Bayshore was a smaller version of his store, and I think they owned or was involved with a small theater called the Encore on Main st. I saw Planet their ,bad print, and The Kids are alright with a missing reel. Auy vey.. John M.

The original POTA made the list of the 50 most racist
movies. In fact it clocked in at # 2 ("Breakfast at Tiffany's" was numero uno).
The way they are written up it seems like a lark (I didn't check to see if any
other "Ape" movies made the list). Make of it what you will. Eric Greene called
the "Ape" films the most perceptive movies about race ever, so there's all kinds
of opinions.

| Subject: Colonel (????) Taylor |
.html
I was reading another POTA site recently and noticed a tribute to Charlton Heston which included this line, "But he will always be Col. George Taylor to us". Also, a few years ago I saw a fan made replacement DVD wrap for Planet that also listed the character Heston played as Colonel George Taylor.
I know many will say that in Escape the character was referred to as Colonel Taylor, but the character did not appear in that film. The character that was created by Rod Serling & Michael Wilson and performed by Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes was George Taylor, not Colonel Taylor. He is listed in the film's credits as George Taylor. Some promotional materials issued at the time refer to the character as Astronaut Taylor. In neither of the two films the character actually appears is he ever called or referred to as Colonel Taylor.
More importantly, Heston does not play the character as a military man. Just the opposite, Heston plays him as a man who disdains war. Thus, to me, the reference to him as Colonel Taylor in Escape is more of a continuity error along the lines of 3978 vs. 3955.
I think this is important because the reference to the character as a military officer redefines the character from the way he is written and performed in the two films he appears. Many would argue that the astronauts in the '60s were military officers, but there were many civilian astronauts such as Neil Armstrong. When Planet was produced in 1968 opposition to the Vietnam war was high. As a consequence, military officers were not very popular figures at the time. So it seems that the filmmakers made a conscience effort not to make Taylor a military man to the point that he is called the more generic term of 'skipper' by Landon & Dodge.
What I wonder is why so many POTA fans feel the need to assign military ranks to Taylor and the other astronauts. Star Wars fans don't do this despite there being several characters who were actually given military ranks in that series. But Obi-Wan Kenobi is usually referred to just as Obi-Wan (sometimes Old Ben), not as General Kenobi. Same is true of Han Solo.
Now we know that Stewart was a Lieutenant because she is referred to in the film as such. But Landon and Dodge have also been assigned various ranks by fans. For Landon is makes more sense but Dodge is portrayed as a scientist, and rather than giving him the title of Dr. more times than not he is given a military rank.
Same is true of the TV series characters. On several TV series sites they are referred to as Colonel Alan Virdon and Major Peter Burke. Now I could be wrong but I don't recall either ever being referred to or called by these ranks in any episode of the TV series. (And if I'm wrong about this, please let me know.) In the series guide and all promo materials issued at the time, they are both referred to as simply Astronauts Virdon & Burke, never by any military rank.
The reason I find this disturbing is because assigning a character a military rank really redefines that character versus how they were originally written by the writers who created them and portrayed by the actors who played them. It goes to the core of who that character is and in most cases it seems to be revisionism. <.html

So now I find out you're against revisionism in the POTA series, James? Has the world turn upside down? Haven't I been railing against this very same thing for years when it comes to PLANET vs. the rest of the series, but always found you to be one of the biggest purveyors of it? It's never bothered me to refer to Taylor as "Colonel" before, but it sure bugs the hell out of me to say Ape City has to be somewhere unrealistically close to New York City so as to make sense out of the sloppiness of BENEATH's topographical nonsense, BUT THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO BOTHER YOU or that you insist we wouldn't have PLANET if there wasn't ESCAPE first! That PLANET requires accepting a time loop revisionism that doesn't even allow a classic motion picture its own dignity.
Madness! Madness!

Subject: [pota] Colonel (????) Taylor

First, in regard to your personal and inaccurate attack on me (which would have caused this post to have been deleted had it been an attack on anyone else), I have always been an advocate on respecting the canon of the film series. And a very vocal advocate.
Second, I think you misunderstand my point about revisionism, I was not referring to Taylor but to the other astronauts, such as Burke & Virdon, being assigned military ranks by fans. My point about Taylor was that it was a continuity error and thus inaccurate to say that Heston played Colonel Taylor on a DVD wrap for Planet.
As far as your other points, placing Ape City near NYC has nothing to do with Beneath. In Planet, Taylor finds the Statue after only a short ride. Cornelius' map resembles the NYC area. To say that a character is holding the map sideways and ignoring that the Forbidden Zone is repeatedly referred to as 'our eastern desert' is revisionism, not the other way around.
Also, both the time loop and the two timelines theory can both be considered 'revisionism' since neither was part of the plot of Planet. So to say that one is because you disagree with it and the other is not is just not fair.
Now if you want to have a respectful discussion about these issues, great I look forward to it. But if you want continue to indulge in personal attacks, any further posts will be deleted.

Whether it is close to NYC or Boston or Washington or Chicago or Dallas does not intrinsically change the story in any way.

In Planet, Taylor finds the Statue after only a short ride. Cornelius' map resembles the NYC area. To say that a character is holding the map sideways and ignoring that the Forbidden Zone is repeatedly referred to as 'our eastern desert' is revisionism, not the other way around.
Dr. Zaius says in PLANET, referring to Taylor's statement, that "a ship from outer space sank in an inland sea of our eastern desert," therefore the "inland sea," which Cornelius later calls "dead lake" (so let's not get into an argument over what constitutes a lake or a sea but simply acknowledge it as the body of water we see at the beginning of PLANET), is also part of this eastern desert.
Ok, fine... then the ocean that the fugitive party reaches at the end of PLANET is even further east. In Cornelius' office, Taylor clearly points to this inland sea as where his spaceship sunk, and which is separated from the ocean seen on the bottom of the map by another body of land. Therefore what you see on Cornelius' map, where Cornelius points to where Ape Town -- which it should be called, "Ape City" being another BENEATH revision -- is in relationship to everything else is WEST of the eastern desert! (Also, in BENEATH, Cornelius says that the last place they saw Taylor was "riding north" along the section of land between the lake and the sea.)
Are you still going to argue with this, James? I mean, come on? This clearly tells you how to orientate Cornelius' map, and this clearly shows you HE'S HOLDING IT SIDEWAYS! Where is the "revisionism"? I know the map looks like the New York City area, but it's simply not. It can't be! I know this means it doesn't jibe with what's in BENEATH, but too bad. They made mistakes in BENEATH.
At the end of PLANET, Taylor rides north along what was the eastern coast of the US to find the Statue of Liberty, therefore the cave is south of that. How far south the cave is, or how long Taylor rides north is debatable. I don't tie myself to a quick session of shots as meaning the length of the ride is therefore also short. I contend that it MUST be longer than shown because -- going back to Cornelius' map -- Taylor points to where his spaceship sank and to where he was captured. Ok, he and his fellow astronauts trekked between those two spots for "many days and nights," therefore the distance must be long, and since Cornelius doesn't know anything of the Statue of Liberty, but does know where his cave is, and must be somewhere on his map, then the Statue is someplace NOT on his map, which means you'd have to travel some distance from the cave to where the Statue is.
I know you think the "inland sea" is what was Long Island Sound, but that's northeast of the Statue of Liberty, so it can't be that and the map can't show the New York City area. If Taylor travels north after he leaves the cave, then the desert between the ocean and the inland sea, the inland sea itself, the desert beyond that, the green belts beyond that, and Ape Town (and whatever else made up the ape civilization) is all WEST of the Atlantic Ocean, deep inland in what was the eastern part of the US, and very much southwest of the New York City area.
If you don't acknowledge this as being so, James, then I "respectfully" contend you simply can't see the obvious.

James, James, James.... I don't understand what your problem is in this area. Have you gone south?!!!
Many of the early astronauts were US Air Force pilots with military rank. I don't believe they lost that ranking when they went into NASA. PLANET, being made when it was made, could easily lead one to assume that Taylor then, too, had been an Air Force pilot before becoming an astronaut, and clearly Paul Dehn made that assumption.
What's wrong with that? I don't get the problem here?

.html Just a few quick points:
* Burke's rank of major was given in the script to "The Interrogation."
* Virdon's Burke was given in Rod Serling's TV pilot script.
* Obi-Wan Kenobi was called "General Kenobi" in the very first Star Wars film, and has since been called that quite frequently by the clones. :) <.html
