.html.html I highly disagree with "Special K" that the movies decline the further one goes down the franchise chain. "Conquest" is a great movie that most POTA fans love. Roddy McDowell gives his best ape-acting performance as the tormented Caesar. I personally believe it's second best next to the our beloved "Planet" (I'm still a big fan of "Beneath" as well...General Ursus and nasty-looking bomb-worshiping mutants=awesome).
Rich...love the Timeline book, but you're the first Apes fan I've ever heard/read who claims "Escape" is his/her favorite of the franchise. Personally, it's my least favorite to watch (even though I love 'em all) b/c there is just not enough going on. Yes, I'm in the minority now...I even enjoy "Battle" more than "Escape."

"Escape" is my favorite of the sequels. I can't
say it's better than "Planet" but I don't think the other sequels can hold a
candle to it in terms of writing and acting. I believe it was Arthur Jacob's
favorite of the sequels too. Now, somebody please hold a candle to me; I like
that.

"Planet" (I'm still a big fan of "Beneath" as well...General Ursus
and nasty-looking bomb-worshiping mutants=awesome) .
Rich...love the Timeline book, but you're the first Apes fan I've ever
heard/read who claims "Escape" is his/her favorite of the franchise.
Personally, it's my least favorite to watch (even though I love 'em all)
b/c there is just not enough going on. Yes, I'm in the minority now...I
even enjoy "Battle" more than "Escape."

I can see where people don't like the "modern
day" "Escape" as much as the more science-fictiony settings. They probably won't
be as happy with this new "Caesar" either being set in modern day. One of the
things I liked about "Escape" is that the setting was different and, maybe more
than any of the others, we were the villains, which is a strong statement. Even
"Conquest" let us off the hook a little.

The main problem, as I see it from the point of view that POTA is an adult thing that has something serious to say, is that to a lot of POTA fans, POTA is at its best when it's "gorillas on horseback chasing humans and firing guns." Now I love all of PLANET, but for me the most interesting stuff is what's said, NOT the action sequences, and what's really wrong with BENEATH was it doesn't have much interesting to say -- as compared to PLANET. ESCAPE is my favorite sequel because it's the most literate. CONQUEST would have been better if it only had a bit more intelligent dialogue. BATTLE tries to have something to say, but it gets silly, same with the TV show. In fact, I think one of the big problems with the TV show is "too many gorillas on horseback chasing humans and firing guns!"

PLANET was the perfect blend of what it had to say, both visually and literally. BENEATH was more visual, ESCAPE was more literal, CONQUEST offered less in meaning visually and only offered well written during the last 6 mins. BATTLE, had equal amounts both visual and literal, but in subdued and minimal amounts - which is odd since the couple who wrote it, especially the wife makes sure to always make it known how educated they were.
In terms of the TV Series, I believe it had more to say than most people admit. It was not only a product of its time but of TV. Under limited constraint I feel it did more than BATTLE in literally telling more and broaching the same material PLANET did. By that time the POTA genre had become entrenched into an odd "children's" form of entertainment that the studio felt embarrassed to admit it was for adults too. It had becomes distant and disconnected from its origin as less accepted as adult sci-fi. For this reason I think the animated cartoon series for all its faults is more daring in some of its material and visual representation - especially for a Saturday morning TV series meant only for kids. It is a misanthrope touching on heavy subjects like war, religion, mutations, brutality, race relations, and genocide. Subtracting the more child-cartoon-friendly "monsterbird", Ice Ape, and
"Ape-phrases" it holds a more compelling and more literal feel than even some of the film sequels. It certainly offers a wider and broader vistas to visit due to its layered frame work of apes, astronauts, humanoids, and mutant story-lines. It is the way I think the genre needs to be re-visited, but in live action and with some changes. It would be the perfect new TV series but with today's digital realm which can bring, visually, a stunning new re-birth. It holds the proper layered structure that is needed to keep a series going, and growing - evolving. Using traditional make-up but visual creating a world more detailed, and vast than ever before. The Eco-loving mutants of the animated series is a wonderful contrast to the bomb venerating ones of BENEATH make a wonderful contrast of those left after the holocaust. Having two polar opposite communities existing
within the same storyline would open and add another layer with the possibilities of conflict between the two for future story options.
With all this talk over a film reboot which is misplaced in simply changing and moving further away was what is already there I think there is enough stated that just needs to be fleshed out. There is a very common (and I mean common) train of thought in Hollywood today that tried and true film/comics/series of the past need to be completely re-tooled to be done right. This we can do it better now is mostly hewed from ego without talent. Its not like they are re-making silent films into sound, or B&W films into color. These people think the originals need to be improved - in the end most of these remakes fail.

.html.html Ahem...I FULLY understand that POTA is an "adult thing." It's sci-fi for social scientists (as has been discussed before) and I am indeed a social scientist. Yes, I get Planet of the Apes and I'm very attentive to what is being said. As far as the gorillas are concerned maybe it is you
who needs to come to grips with what they fully represent. The gorillas are the most intimidating, terrifying force the movies have to offer; more so than the SS-like police of Conquest or Mr. Soap-Opera (Dr. Hasslein) of Escape. Outright fear is what they represent and that says a lot. Without them, what would Planet of the Apes be? They amplify Zaius' ability to be the antagonist because they represent the consequences of what could happen if you oppose him. What would all of the
orangutans be without them? They're power-base would be severly weakened or even non-existant. I would even put them up agianst any other force-of-intimidation from any other movies including Stormtroopers or Nazgul. The gorillas could at least hit something and they sure as heck would have caught Lady Arwen (movie only).
Yes, when I was a kid who first watched Planet of the Apes with my dad when it came to television, I thought to myself "gorillas on horseback chasing humans and firing guns!! Cool!!" But, as I grew up, I came to understand that it was/is something more. I love what Planet of the Apes has to say, but everyone needs to remember that those action sequences and the brutality depicted are saying something as well. That goes for all of the movies.
May you have nightmares about gorillas with guns led by General Ursus!!

Beneath was allegory for the Vietnam War which had worn thin by that time (but I still like the movie).
I respectfully disagree with you about Conquest. I felt that it was Roddy's best acting performance. I love how he goes from being completely naive to the leader of a violent rebellion. He depicted this transformation in excellent fashion. It shows what can happen to anyone who is pushed too far. It's also allegory for the Watts riots and race relations in general. I believe that it says more than you think it does. Yes, the dialogue could have been better...some of Breck's lines were over-the-top. But MacDonald, Armando, and especially Caesar were good/great characters who were well acted.

There is a very common (and I mean common) train of thought in Hollywood today that tried and true film/comics/ series of the past need to be completely re-tooled to be done right. This we can do it better now is mostly hewed from ego without talent. Its not like they are re-making silent films into sound, or B&W films into color. These people think the originals need to be improved - in the end most of these remakes fail.

It teaches symbiosis. Apes grow corn.
Humans steal corn. Apes hunt Humans.
But then an Outside Influence is introduced.

Orang is forced to reveal secret. Chimps

.html Hi everybody,
I'm new to the POTA Yahoo group and was encouraged by a welcome message from the moderator to post a message and introduce myself.
I've been happily marooned on the Planet of the Apes since being transported through time via (the NY area ABC affiliate) channel 7's 4:30 Movie marathons of the 70's. In reading the introduction to Rich Handley's Timeline Of The Planet Of The Apes, I was glad to learn of someone else who had become hooked in the same way. It's a brilliantly executed labor of love that weaves together all the various media created for the franchise into a fascinating chronological tapestry. I highly recommend it to anyone that hasn't read it yet.
It was because of Bill Hollweg's expanded audio dramatization of the Simian Saga that I was introduced to the POTA Yahoo group, and had the flames of my Ape devotion fanned even higher than I thought possible, as I've been an avid fan for most of my life. Many thanks to Mr. Hollweg and the Broken Sea Audio folks for giving me something to experience over and over that I enjoy more each time. I look forward to the continued expanded dramatization of the series.
Recently, I searched out some great Facebook pages devoted to the Apes, which I also recommend to anyone that hasn't explored that area of The Forbidden Zone of man's world yet.
It's an honor to be a member of this group and I look forward to meeting all of you.

I think I remember answering that poll, which would account for PLANET being #1.
Don't recall what I thought of CONQUEST being #2, but it probably didn't surprise me. I can understand why ESCAPE wouldn't be that popular with the fan boy crowd, but critically I think it's the best sequel, it's certainly more inventive than all the others.

It's interesting to keep tabs on what Fox is
doing with their franchises and wonder how that will effect the POTA reboot.
Word is Fox has two terrific (terrific in Foxese) "X-Men" scripts and want a
movie for 2011. I guess that would mean no "Caesar" until 2012. 2011 would
make an even 10 years since Burton's effort but if "Caesar" came out
then it would probably take a backseat to Fox's favorite franchise.
Jamie Moss, who wrote the "X-Men: First Class"
script Fox flipped for, was/is also a "Caesar" writer.

Haven't heard of this Jamie Moss, but I'll bet by this stage he's more a script "tweaker" on CAESAR.
If I know Fox, they're probably trying to figure out how to do CAESAR as cheaply as possible, but I still think it'll be a $75M budget at least.

When I woke up this morning I caught the end of Battle on AMC's HD channel. I can't believe they didn't show the film in widescreen. They just took the old 4:3 cropped version and stretched it out to fill a 16:9 screen. I'm use to this kind of crap on TBS but am very disappointed in AMC for doing this.

.htmlLooking at the film from a narrative basis only, Conquest is the one sequel that most stands on its own. All the other sequels seem more reliant on the audience knowing what had happened in the previous films. In Conquest there is just a little bit of exposition to explain who Caesar is but from there the rest of the story stands on its own. <.html

After Scott Frank was shown the door, Jamie Moss
was announced as the main writer who would reshape "Caesar" more to Fox's
liking. The original writers before Scott Frank, Jaffe and Silver ("The Hand
That Rocks the Cradle") were going to "polish the dialogue". When the new
director Rupert Wyatt was announced the only writers mentioned were Jaffe and
Silver.
Jamie Moss had also been working on "X-Men: First
Class", based on Bryan Singer's ideas. My "theory" is that Fox put Moss on
"Caesar" to keep him employed while they waited for Singer to be available.
Based on that new item, that Fox doesn't want to wait for Singer, I think they
put Moss back on "First Class" to get it ready for filming, and are just
going to let Jaffe and Silver bring "Caesar" to completion. That sounds good to
me that the original writers are getting to finish what they started instead of
bringing in the infamous "too many cooks".
The word is that Fox is hot to make movies with
all their "Avatar" cash, so "Caesar" might happen quickly. A rolling "Caesar"
gathers no Moss.

Haven't heard of this Jamie Moss, but I'll bet by this stage he's more a
script "tweaker" on CAESAR.
If I know Fox, they're probably trying to figure out how to do CAESAR as
cheaply as possible, but I still think it'll be a $75M budget at
least.

As far as too many cooks, Wilson overhauled Serling's script,
and that didn't turn out too bad. On the other hand they
brought
in a couple of hacks to do the same thing last time, and that didn't

.htmlHi James,
Sure. Thanks for the interest. The comic book is called Witch Hunter. It's not about hunting witches. The hero was burned at the stake as a boy in 1692 for being a witch and resurrected 300 years later to fight the powers that be who lurk in the shadows when he grew to adulthood in modern day. This nefarious group of old races, like Dark Elves, Goblins, etc., led by an evil man with a great deal of magical power, is called The Scarlet Circle. They get the finger of blame pointed at everyone but themselves for the world's ills while they steal all the magic for themselves for some, as yet, undisclosed endgame. They are the actual ones who stage witch hunts, metaphorical and literal, and Witch Hunter hunts the hunters while trying to wake the world up to its shortcomings and its potential. People like Witch Hunter because he has a trademark smirk, literally, and he doesn't take himself too seriously while doing his best to infuriate The Scarlet Circle in his attempts to
thwart their plans.
Planet of the Apes theme of humanity's inhumanity to itself as it rushes headlong to doomsday impacted me greatly early on, as well as the question of whether we can avert disaster if we know it's coming. I wanted to take a different turn from the dark, brooding hero who takes himself too seriously or the too lighthearted hero who just makes jokes to anger and trip up his foes. As a result, Witch Hunter reasons as he reaches adulthood that if getting burned at the stake was the worst thing that could happen to him, nothing else could be all that bad, so he resolves to do his best to inspire others to take stock of themselves and what humanity can become through his example, and hopefully make them realize their potential along the way. While he'll do his best to turn the tide in its favor, humanity will have to save itself. My other major influences are Dark Shadows, the novels A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr., Strands of Starlight by Gael Baudino, the
works of Zenna Henderson, The Dark is Rising Cycle by Susan Cooper, and the comic books Kamandi and Tomb of Dracula. Ultimately, I hope to just tell a good adventure story that entertains people and touches them in one way or another. We steer our own fate but there are always many who try to alter our course, and often it gets pretty bad before it gets better, which is where it will really get fun.
I've laid the basics out in the first few issues released and on the MySpace, Facebook, and company (www.monarchcomicslair.com) sites, and been honored at the initial response from fans, some industry folks, and the press, especially at the NY Comic Con where we exhibit every year. Thanks again for asking and I hope my response wasn't too long. I love Witch Hunter. He's my oldest friend and it's a labor of love that continues to attract new people to help me chart his course. Planet of the Apes and the other influences have given me so much, and I hope that I can give other people the enjoyment I've experienced.

Stone's POTA was going to be produced by Don
Murphy and Jane Hamsher, who produced his "Natural Born Killers" (Murphy was the
one who was a big "Apes" fan and convinced Stone to do it). Hamsher told that
story and others in her book "Killer Instinct". It wasn't Fox that wanted the
"Flintstones" touch as much as the executive assigned to the movie. That was in
1994 when that live-action "Flintstones" movie was a hit. You know studio
executives, they get paid the big bucks to copy whatever is at the top of the
box office list. With "Alice in Wonderland" a big hit, they'll probably say of
"Caesar", "this should be like a Tim Burton movie!".

*sigh* How did I ever get to this predicament. ..I am SOOOOOOO
under the gun....
Waiting for the clear latex to dry up around the hairline so that I can
add more rubber latex and eventually smooth out the sewn portion of the hair
weft. I love how the hair lays nicely around the neck. I used
three packages of fake wefts of hair to fluff up the hair. Too bad my
boys are not hard core ape fans...they won't let me grease up their eyes and
hands...I guess more rubber mask grease for me! Oh well. I
should just be glad they are willing to go to Wondercon in ape
costumes. :)

Sam Hamm's screenplay was actually pretty good.
That's the one they should have made, but . . .

Just sounds like a plot for "As the Planet of the Apes Turns," or "The Edge of the Forbidden Zone," or "All My Hairy Ape Children," or "The Young and the Restless Gorillas"... ..

.html.html Good point Scott (though I still love those soap titles). Others claiming thrones has led to considerable drama throughout human history.
