This is very exciting. As most die-head POTA fans know, about half of what was shot for Taylor's escape was not used in the final film. While there are many stills of the missing scenes, the actual footage has been missing for over 40 years.
Well, now thanks to intrepid fan Alfred Hill who searched FOX's archives for the missing footage; Taylor's escape has been reconstructed and can now me scene as originally intended.
MARK WAHLBERG TO PLAY CAESAR IN PLANET

One more night until Wondercon. My gorillas are pretty ready...I only have the boot covers to sew for the older gorilla. I'm not putting that much effort into the boots, since I'm not wearing my chimp boots anyway...
I really hope I find someone else who is into costuming as much as me and who would love to just wear a costume and go out in public just because. It's really really fun...I also love the make up aspect of it, the transformation that slowly occurs.
I revamped my hairline and I have all the parts to the costumes in one handy heap. My makeup is also grouped together now. And I ordered a fresh batch of tooth black in case I did not have enough. I also remembered to buy my liquid nutrition for tomorrow, so I'm pretty set. I hope I do a good job tomorrow. I have a feeling we'll still be the only apes in town, but at least I'll be flanked by my gorillas. It will be fun, and I'm really looking forward to it. It's been six months since I last put my ape on, and to me that seems like forever.

Well, ESCAPE being the most popular sequel is no surprise -- it has the best script, and it shouldn't get booed simply because it doesn't have enough gorillas. It deserves respect for resurrecting the franchise from the ashes.
I've certainly booed BENEATH enough, though, but I do give it some respect by admitting that its popularity is the reason the rest of the series came about.
I can also think of one good thing to say about BATTLE... The last time I watched it, I actually enjoyed it. This was a couple years ago and I watched it early on a Saturday morning, the time when we all used to watch cartoons. Yeah, I think that's the best time of the week to watch BATTLE.

Each of the sequels has it's pros and cons.
You didn't say if it was the theatrical Conquest
or the un edited Conquest. I like Beneath because
it's still set in the future, but if Conquest had been
release as intended after the Watts Riots, it would
have been a more powerful film. That ties it for third
in my book. Fox just chickened out. How PC of them.

The Watts riots were in 1965 so how much closer to that date can you get being a sequel of a movie made in 1968. The riots were still very fresh in everybodies mind then. Anyway, I voted for Conquest, and I feel it is {remake included] finally getting the bravos it deserves especially on the 1.8 million budget it had to contend with. Any negative remarks about the movie should be blammed on Fox not the filmakers as is mostly the case. John M..

Cuz I couldn't make it to
Wondercon again this year, I went to Point Dume and Malibu State park. I
can't believe I've lived in Southern California since 1966 and never visted
these places. Standing on the beach, all I could think was, "these people
here have NO idea what happened here in '68." At the Rock Pool wher Taylor

filmed there. I should have some pics up soon. I only wish I had

It did look fantastic. I was too tired to watch it all when it aired,
so I popped in the DVD last night to finish it. The DVD version, which
would have looked awesome not long ago, paled in comparison to the ABC
HD broadcast.
Wasn't one of the spacesuits from Escape worn by one of the aliens in the bar scene in Star Wars.

That was by far one of the best 1080 HD transfers I've seen since POTA on Bluray.
Incredibly sharp and the colors just poped out of the screen. It was awesome.
I only hope that that broadcast stirs enough buzz so that Paramount finally releases it on Bluray.
So far nothing planned as far as I know.

Just come across this? Lucas re-used POTA costume in the Star Wars!

Planet of the Apes in Star Wars? Replica Movie Costumes. ... Check out the old Richard Pryor show's cantina skit on youtube too- you can see ...
Do you know of any other cases of apes costumes or make-up in other movies?

It did look fantastic. I was too tired to watch it all when it aired, so I popped in the DVD last night to finish it. The DVD version, which would have looked awesome not long ago, paled in comparison to the ABC HD broadcast.

I think we have a better chance of seeing it again in HD next year than seeing it on bluray anytime soon.
Hopefully by then they'll have Bluray recorders in the market.
Or at least I'll have an HD DVR by then. My Tivo is standard. And it sucks. :o)

Latest on Caesar.
MTVs interview with character designer and special effects wiz Aaron Sims (video).
Yeah, but the FX guy is always the last to know.
Supposedly Rupert Wyatt is the director, not officially signed but developing it
(so Fox can give him the boot like Scott Frank). Why didn't they ask if it would
be CG or makeup? I sat through an "Army Wives" ad for that ? At least we
know who's doing the FX. Thanks Al.
The time had finally come again to don full ape regalia. I had waited 14 months for this to happen again at a big splurgy event. In the meantime I had satisfied my cravings to go under the goo at least four times inbetween the long awaited convention, but all minor in comparison to the magnitude of the crowds at Wondercon. I nervously paced myself to start on Dylan's costume two weeks prior to the event. It was a hidden blessing that I was at this point jobless, so I could concentrate my efforts into something meaningful, rather than just juggling the same damned balls at the dreaded slavemines. Two weeks prior to debut a costume that had to be a knockout was riding on the edge of disaster, and this added the necessary stress to really light the fire and jumpstart the monstrous project that I knew was coming. This meant recreating a stunning pullover hood for the other gorilla that would flank my side, including all the accoutrements that comes with the standard
gorilla soldier issue. This also meant recreating some of my baby gorilla's costume so that my gorilla soldiers should at least look like they were from the same army.
You see, the first Wondercon I attended was the first time I had ever glued on the appliances. I was meant to partner with my neighbor and go ape out at the 2009 event but health issues had forced him out of the running. Although it was a wonderful experience from all the commotion I created, it was still a psychologically taxing experience to be the only ape in town. Walking aimlessly about hoping to bump into another ape at the convention was something I had done during the whole convention. At the end of the 2009 convention, it was really heartbreaking to acknowledge that yes, we must be a dying breed.
It was only on Halloween that it dawned on me that I should bring my two boys to Wondercon in costume as gorilla soldiers, to alleviate the loneliness that I felt from my first Wondercon experience. The brave souls who have donned full ape regalia must feel this awkwardness I think when they find themselves in the same predicament. Brian from Apemania graciously offered to help me gorilla-fy my sons with child-sized gorilla appliances. I had been meaning to recreate the appliances myself, but the drudgery of work, the time sucking hobbies I dabble in and chasing other monkey dreams made it impossible for me to meet the deadline. Three strikes against me already, and I hadn't even counted the chimpchange necessary to fund such a fantasy.
Anyway, this is becoming too much of a novel. Enough with the chit chat and bring on the photos!!
I decided at the last minute to wear a lei since I felt that I had gone too dark with the makeup. At least this way I could explain that I had just gotten a much needed respite in Hawaii. This image was taken before we were registered. http://img405.imageshack.us/i/dsc03059a.jpg/
I had a funny experience at the registration. The person helping me out was quite flustered and wanted to know how old I was. I said, uh....43? He was trying to give me a child's pass, for children under the age of 11, if you can believe that. He said my height confused him, but I said to blame it on the makeup.
Ashton of course made the cutest of all gorillas. Marina Sirtis had to lift him up (all 35 pounds of him) so that we could take a photo together, since he is so short. A lot of people who were taking photos did not even realize he was part of the entourage, because he was easily lost underfoot.
It was unbelievably crowded and many times we were unable to move since it was all about critical mass. It was worse than last year as far as body count was concerned! I had to get a breather and go up for some fresh air as I felt a bit claustrophobic with so many people in one giant cave. It was there that Ashton saw and posed with a costumed Ranger. If you could see it, Ashton is all smiles here as he poses with his favorite one, the Red Power Ranger!
We chatted a bit with Don Pedro Colley, who remembered me from last year. He was happy to see the boys so splendid in their costumes. He made Ashton stand on a chair to be able to take this photo:
I was afraid to approach Lindsay Wagner for a photograph because I did not want to tarnish my image of her if she was all about dollar signs. Luckily for us, she was a very gracious lady. I promised to e-mail her this photograph so that she could post it on her Facebook page.
Looking back, it was quite a fun and freeing experience. I only wish now to be able to go to a bigger event, but who knows when that will be? Hopefully by then I will have become an expert at making my own foam latex appliances. When I first found the hidden pathway to the Ape Kingdom (thank God for the internet!), I only lived vicariously through the other members of this wonderful community of simians. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would someday be chimping it out in public.
My husband treated me to a power sized serving of macha green tea from Jamba Juice because I had been craving it all day. I offered to buy the Jamba Juice myself, to freak out the servers, but he told me to stay in the car. My tired little feet did not mind one bit. When I got home, I read the Monsters in Filmation magazine that my girlfriend surprised me with. I read the article about my most favorite of sequels while fully dressed in ape regalia. I read it slowly and with much pleasure, savoring every written morsel no matter how dated the article was. I secretly wrinkled my nose and chuckled to myself when I saw my hands in full makeup holding the magazine up. Oh, the simple joys of living life to the fullest! I had experienced geek nirvana and I did not want it to end.
Jess.

Here's an un-edited article intended for Scrolls that I don't think we ever ran (reader feedback indicated zero interest in the Burton Movie).

A CHAT WITH AARON SIMS
Aaron, you have an extremely extensive and impressive resume - to say the least! I see that you originally worked with Rick Baker in 1988 before joining Stan Winston in 2000 and, going freelance in 2005. Both Rick & Stan were [at one time or another] involved with the 2001 `Re-Imagined version' of "Planet of the Apes" > can you put into words the difference between these two gentlemen?
Rick and Stan both are very different from each other in the way they approach projects and the type of projects they work on. Rick and Stan both have created mechanical puppets and make-ups, but Rick Baker is known for his wonderful make-up creations and Stan for his incredible animatronic dinosaurs.
As you are well aware, before Rick's involvement in the film - Stan was approached to undertake the make-up side of things. Did you manage to catch a glimpse any of Stan's early `ape' make-up tests and, if so, what were your impressions on these wonderful creations?
I thought Stan's Ape make-ups were great, and had a lot of character.
How did you get involved in preparing for the [2001] Re-Imagined version?
My involvement on the remake was very brief, and was merely a test make-up, where I helped in the painting of the appliances, that was sculpted by Jim McPherson.
It was a team effort, and a successful test. For me I just used all the reference I could find on orangutans, and painted them as close as I could to the real thing.
Can you re-call any 'difficulties' that you encountered during the `painting' of the early orangutan test ?
There really wasn't any difficulties in painting the skin to look like an orangutan. It was just a matter of doing it and seeing how it would all come together with the hair and make-up.
Was all the work undertaken in Rick Baker's shop or did you manage to create any maquettes in your own studio?
All the work I did was at Rick's shop, and painting the orangutan for the test was all I did for that show.
Were you responsible for any other 'ape' heads / test make-ups?
No, just the orangutan.
Can you re-call any grumblings over the look of the female chimpanzees?
At that time of the developing and creating of the make-ups I wasn't around Rick's - I had moved onto Stan's.
Did you consider / create any `other' species of Ape - apart the Chimps, Orangutans and Gorillas?
At the time of the test there wasn't much that was being considered. The film wasn't awarded at that time - so there wasn't any reason to experiment.
What are your overall thoughts on "Planet of the Apes [2001]"?
As a filmmaker, I'm really appreciative of Tim's ability to successfully create an entire universe out of his imagination and I think he hit his targets in that sense, the most important sense, I think it was very successful. It was also VERY fun to watch.
The film, although financially a big success, was not given a good reception by the critics > Rick Baker's makeup didn't even get a nomination at the Oscars. Do you have any explanation / thoughts at all for that?
I'm sure the Academy voters have their reasons and I'm sure it was not because of the actual effects - which were in my book outstanding.
How much of an influence was the original `Planet of the Apes' to you ?
This is a great question ! I have to admit the original `Planet of the Apes' had a larger impact and influence on me. I can remember doing drawings as well as painting as a child of the characters from that film.
How highly do you regard the original make-up[s] by John Chambers & Dan Striepeke?
I remember them very well and was really blown away with the make-ups. Even though today things have advanced and changed so much - the original make-ups are really something that will always be remembered.
Do get the feeling that there will, at some stage, be another film / TV series for Apes?
I'm sure that there will be some kind of continuation.
What was it like being involved with such films as "Gremlins 2", "Batman Forever" and one of my particular favourites "War of the Worlds"?
All of the films I've worked on are always a different experience.
Gremlins 2 being the longest of any film I've worked on and the first film at Rick Bakers. War of the Worlds was the second film I worked designing with Steven Spielberg, the first was AI, and both times was such a great experience. Steven always knows what he wants and as a creature designer this is so important. This allows me to create and focus on what they want, and not waste time guessing.
Do you think prosthetic make ups, like for example, those used on POTA have evolved about as far as they can - is digital make up [for example Pirates of the Carribean 2] about to take over?
It's hard to say. As the process gets cheaper and more automated there may be a day that it's all digital. I know it will be sometime before that is possible and many actors - as well as directors - like to see that on set.
Can you let us 'in' with regards to what you are currently involved / working on at this moment in time?
Well, I've been working designing for the new Hulk film as well as Mummy3, The Day the Earth Stood Still, the new X-men film.
Last but not least, when Aaron Sims finds the time - how does he relax ?
I really love what I do and find that relaxing for the most part. I also hike, swim and enjoy the California outdoors - which is some of the most beautiful countryside in the world.

Sounds like you had a really good time. Dylan and Ashton looked great in their gorilla costumes. And you got to see Don Pedro again. Did you talk to him much about Beneath?
Nice pics with Marina Sirtis and Lindsey Wagner, although I wouldn't have known that was Sirtis in the pic of you hadn't pointed it out.
Thanks for sharing the pics and such a detailed account of the con.

James, it was so cool to meet up with Don Pedro again. He already knew we were in the convention because my girlfriend had chatted with him briefly before we got to his table. He was glad to see us there, and very surprised at my ape family. He thought that Ashton was the cutest. If you could have seen his gigantic hands engulf Ashton's tiny paws when they shook hands good bye. I should have taken a photograph of that moment but we were rushing to meet my husband who said to meet him at the drop off point at a specific time.
Don Pedro was gracious enough to share with me his memories of working in Beneath. He said that of the two months that they took to film his parts in the movie, he only had to wear the full makeup five or six times. He was glad about that because being in full makeup for 12 hours was not very pleasant. He said that they woke him up at 4:30 AM to start the makeup process, and the makeup artists would finish by 9:00 AM or so. That included all of the minor detail painting that had to occur to give the mutants the effect they were looking for. At the end of a very long day of shooting the film, he said it took another hour for them to slowly work off the makeup that was glued down by peeling it and working in baby oil between his face and the makeup. He said that he fell asleep while they made a lifemask of him, because he was so comfortable in his chair. I guess at that time they would stick in straws through the nostrils and glop on the mold material, which he said
felt so very cool and relaxing. He did not feel claustrophobic one bit, though they had warned him about that before they started the process.

Nice pics with Marina Sirtis and Lindsey Wagner, although I wouldn't have known that was Sirtis in the pic of you hadn't pointed it out.
Thanks for sharing the pics and such a detailed account of the con.

According to Sim's imdb, he's mostly a character
designer, so he's not doing FX or makeup (probably). I think right now they're
still trying to figure out what it's going to be. To makeup or not to makeup is
probably the question right now. Could be CG.

For some reason, there are always a few groups of
apes at Comic-Con. I always happen to miss them, but thay always run into
each other. I started going to conventions in '76. My first time
dressing up was '08. I have never seen large numbers of apes.
The funny thing is that apes are ALWAYS popular with people. Like I
said last year, even kids under 10 recognize Planet of the Apes
characters. I was hoping to go to WonderCon this year, but that was not to
be. Maybe someday soon Jess will get to see another ape in
public. I know that I enjoy it when people recognize my make up and
yell out, "Get your stinkin' paws off me!" But then again, I've
always been known locally as "The Ape Guy"

Since the passing of Robert Culp I've been meaning to post this. It's a link to a movie on You Tube, a Made-for-TV movie from 1973 that's never been on video. It has chimps in it and, with the impending CAESAR, if you've never seen it, and can watch it in this form (divided into seven parts), I highly recommend it. Some of you older folks may remember it.
I remember it very well. All the primates had names of ancient generals. It was with Eli Wallach and it was an ABC movie made just before the Night Stalker. Great made for TV movies then. Do you remember The Love War starring Lloyd Bridges and Angie Dickerson..great Sci-Fi...John M.

Mmm, with all the chatting about how CGI apes might be used in the "reworking" for a new APES films, it makes me wonder if they can even come as close in gettting the exppression obtained with the real chimp in the final moments of this film, "A COLD NIGHT'S DEATH". I remember watching it when it first aired on ABC as a kid and how it stayed with me.

July seems very soon. I hope they are not rushing it like they did ten years ago.

Well, it looks to me like it's going to be a AVP type caliber of production -- in British Columbia yet?!!!
Guess maybe we will see this in 2011.

Looks like the worst thing that ever happened to STAR WARS is George Lucas.
Have you been reading that a STAR WARS sitcom is in development that will star Seth Green?!!!
It almost sounds like an April fools joke, but it's for real.
Now, what would be the reaction here if we had news that Fox was developing a POTA sitcom with Seth Green as a wacky chimpanzee?
I don't think it would be too good. I feel sorry today for STAR WARS fans.

Yeah, it's a sign that George Lucas has completely lost his frakkin' mind.

I cant believe that Fox would waste its time on another Ape movie unless it was going to be special..They dont need the money, the last apes movie was not what it should be and their is no dying need.. Just optimistic I guess but we will all know soon enough. John M.

Ha! 2011, I called it. A
very ape-propriate end marker to the Burton decade.
Fox has filmed a lot of movies in British Columbia: "I,
Robot", "X-Men 3", "Fantastic 4"; you know, the classics.
"Caesar" is set in modern day so it probably
doesn't need a lot of time. Just film it and then CG in some apes. If it's
successful hopefully the next ones will be more elaborate.

Forgot to say that there were times when my allergies were acting up, and I would have killed to be able to blow my nose after the makeup had been fully applied. I remembered to take my allergy pill that morning and even used a nasal spray to alleviate most of my allergy symptoms. Blowing your nose is an impossibility though once the appliances are glued down onto your face. At least I did not experience a nosebleed, as sometimes is wont to happen when your allergies are bad., and the unexpectedly large amount of rainfall that has fallen on the Bay Area the previous months did not help us allergy sufferers.
I accidentally sneezed twice while the appliances were glued on, while on the convention floor, something I was dreading and fighting not to happen. Most of the time I can usually just stifle the sneeze, but the two times I accidentally sneezed were impossible to stop. If you vent the appliance and have access to your nose underneath the muzzle, you can use a Q-tip, but it's not as satisfying as being able to blow your nose. It's just one of those things that you pray you will not need to do.

Jess, now imagine that times 10! That's
Comic-Con. And then as a costumed character, you can only walk 2 or 3
steps before getting stopped for pictures. And sometimes that would last
over 5 mins. But, like I said before, it's great that people acknowledge
POTA with good memories. Most of us here, I think, view Planet of the Apes
as OUR film. We take pride in ownership. It's a different thing for
Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, etc... I feel like a proud parent when
strangers come up to me and tell me their favorite parts. I enjoy being
recognized as one of the characters from the film.
