Any hope they would get real and make an R rated movie. Real life for once, or at least a little closer to real life, than the run of the mill PG13 drivil...John M.
I'd be satisfied if it were just compelling, tense and unnerving. Forget overly violent or profane -- that's what gets you the R rating.

Sounds like Akon. I've never been into cosplay.
But even if I was, they last place I'd want to do
it would be in a convention center packed with
so many thousands of people that even their
huge A/C units can't keep up. It has to be
especially bad on guy dressed as transformers.
The only ones really dressed for it are the girls
dressed as super heroes. But in the theaters
they're so cold they're freezing to death.

Let's face it. POTA would never get a G Rating today.
You don't see G Rated films with bare-assed scenes,
forced mating and thermonuclear destruction. Not to
mention lobotomies, human taxidermy and throat shots.
How they got a G in an era when Midnight Cowboy and
M*A*S*H were rated X is beyond me. Never again.

.htmlYeah true, but to get that kind of film the studios tend to go for it by the inclusion of all you mentioned especially for sci-fi and fantasy, and crime dramas. Im not looking for graphic anything just truth, and truth these days require an R rating for the most part. John M.

.htmlAn an animal lover I wouldn't want to see too much abuse overly portrayed to make a point. It would lose any sense of entertainment. When the original APE films were made certain imposed restrictions but at the same time forced the filmmakers to be more creative in terms of getting the point across in a way that would satisfy a wide audience range. Our generation used out minds to fill in the blanks with imagination which is why these films are so personal and loved - like reading a book the film experience was more personal then unlike now.
We may have been labeled the "me" generation but at least we had insight, and imagination unlike today's "i" generation who is shallow, lacks insight, and needs to be medicated to have patience, and deal with anything negative. I'd rather be apart of the "analog" generation over the "digital" any day. I feel films today reflect too much of the chemically treated misfits of humanity who can't operate within the daily grind without a trip to the pharmacy in order to be human. Ultra violent, insensitive, stories with crude characters devoid of intelligent dialog propagate movies digitally patched together with more technical savvy than written intellect populate today's theaters as the norm. Add to that "actors" who aren't that but rather heads and bodies that are manufactured to sell more magazine covers than tickets don't exactly inspire me to pay $15 for a seat.
FOX's track record for remakes/reboots is too low for me to get excited, or look forward to anything even remotely passable. There is a higher percentage of finding a higher grade mentally challenged youth (retarded person to our generation) performing a satisfying job at MacDonalds than FOX exec green lighting, then overseeing a good project come into effect.
We may all live in hope but reality must sharpen the vision so clearly we should wait with less enthusiasm and anticipation, and more concern and apprehension - remember, in the end Caesar's statue did cry.

Even before the last one.
Doubt it will ever happen.

Has anyone here seen WOLVERINE? Watched it in HD on satellite over the weekend. Looked good, well shot, great production design, BUT about as memorable as the bowl movement you had three weeks ago. Know which one I'm talking about? Riiiiight.

Looks like the worst thing that ever happened to STAR WARS is George Lucas.
Have you been reading that a STAR WARS sitcom is in development that will star Seth Green?!!!
It almost sounds like an April fools joke, but it's for real.
Now, what would be the reaction here if we had news that Fox was developing a POTA sitcom with Seth Green as a wacky chimpanzee?
I don't think it would be too good. I feel sorry today for STAR WARS fans.

I've been away for awhile so now I will answer this paradox question. Depending upon which theory you listen to, it would appear that Cornelius and Zira returning to Earth's past to kick-start it's future would be a temporal paradox. Now if one believes in the "changing lanes" theory like Hasslein and Virgil (some other real scientists see it this way) then Hasslein shouldn't have had anything to worry about. He should have simply recognized that humans could now "switch lanes" by not enslaving apes in the first place. What the hell did he care anyway since it was centuries in the future when this was supposed to happen? Of course, we would not have had the small action/adventure element at the end if Hasslein wasn't so insistent on preventing this possible future. Obviously, all he did was speed
up the Ape-revolution by 500 years. Now, those of you who want to keep up this argument in trying to convince me that Escape is the best of the sequels, please stop. I am entitled to my opinion. As I said before, Escape is just not that much of an "escape" for me. I don't think it was that well written with some of the silly humor, continuity issues that have to be "corrected" by fans, and Hasslein's ridiculous "Infinite Regression" explanation. To me, this is barely Planet of the Apes; it's more like Planet of That 70's Show, starring two intelligent chimps...complete with bad music. Yes, Escape is still much better than a lot of today's movies that are full of ridiculous camp, and I still like it (b/c of Cornelius and Zira), but I just do not like it as well as the others.
Now, I know that Escape won this poll and that's fine. I do not think any less of you who voted for it. I'm just happy
that you are all POTA fans and we can have these debates. But just because I like Conquest the best of the sequels and even prefer Beneath and Battle (Virgil Rules!!) to watching Escape, doesn't make me any less of a fan than the rest of you. I am a rather educated person and a fairly nice guy who just happens to have a different opinion than the majority on this fan-site. This debate reminds me of the time I told a Trekkie that I actually prefer Star Trek 6 over Star Trek 2. He immediately started in on me about how "2" is the best b/c the majority Trek fans think so. Ever notice that a lot of Trekkies are like the Borg? You must "assimilate" or you're not a real fan. Let us not go down that path.

If you watch BATTLE early on a Saturday morning, preferably right after watching "The Banana Splits" while having a bowl of Fruit Loops, you won't think it's opinion.
And, what's the "Giant Paradox"?

What you say isn't fact...it's all a matter of opinion. I can booooo if I wish. I can also disagree with you about it being the best script. There are still aspects of the movie that do not make sense (the giant paradox for instance).

OK, you humans out in LA -- be there or you're a bloody baboon! The two indisputably BEST of the APES films are back on the big screen!
Thursday, April 29 – 7:30 PM
Double Feature: PLANET OF THE APES, 1968, 20th Century Fox, 119 min. Dir. Franklin Schaffner. One of the greatest modern sci-fi films, a combination of apocalyptic action and evolutionary parable. Astronaut Charlton Heston finds himself stranded on a strangely familiar world dominated by a race of highly intelligent gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. Trailer
, 1971, 20th Century Fox, 98 min. Dir. Don Taylor. When chimpanzees Cornelius and Zira (Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter) mysteriously arrive on earth in a spaceship, they are greeted with wonder and quickly become a media sensation. But this initial excitement turns to suspicion, and the chimp couple find themselves victims of a high-level conspiracy. Art Director Bill Creber will appear for discussion between films.

I don't recall many revival showings of classic films back when I lived in South Florida. Just the big ones, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, SPARTACUS, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. I was lucky enough once in Ft. Lauderdale to see a restored print of THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. That's still not on Blu-ray.
Would have paid thousands -- if I had it -- to get some theatre there to show PLANET OF THE APES.

.html I received the Forbidden Zine on Friday, but had to wait until Saturday
to read it. And then I was able to read in all in one great sitting.
I had high expectations based on advance info, but the zine was all that
was promised.
I can see why the printing costs where so high. This is by far the
highest grade of paper and color I have ever seen for a 'zine'.
Newsstand magazines do not compare. This is "Thick" quality paper stock!
I'm not going to comment to much about the stuff already discussed by
others that have reviewed the zine, so I'll start of with the things
that caught me by surprise. Many here know that I'm a big fan of Ty's
"Revolution" comic series. So it was a special treat for me to find many
of the conceptual drawings that led to the final covers. It's cool to
see the tweaks and modifications made as it changes hands and gets
revised until it hits the printers. (Perhaps we'll see this for the
covers of the Forbidden Zine itself someday.)
Keeping with the "Art" theme, "Painting POTA" by Graham "Hilly" Hill is
up next. We've all enjoyed his work before and he's even shown a few of
his works before as they have progressed from one stage to another, but
his detailed description of the many phases of his "Councilor Zaius"
piece was great. If nothing else, it shows just how much work goes into
creating these POTA masterpieces.
The article on the upcoming "Conspiracy" graphic novel just makes the
wait all the more anxious. The best part of course was the fantastic
"Complications" artwork by E.M. Gist. Wow! To be honest, I think it is
the best piece coming out of this venture and even outdoes the art they
have already released. If this is the kind of art that will be in
"Conspiracy", we'll be in for a great novel. I do hope 'Blam!' finalize
the release details soon.
Another article that was a bit of an eye opener regarding the amount of
work needed to create POTA inspired creation is Jessica's Costuming
article. As she mentions, it looks a lot easier than it is. I admit that
a lot of the things she mentioned are over my head as my sewing
experience is limited to sewing back a few loose buttons. But we can now
appreciate the real work that goes on for both costumers like herself
and even the kind work that went into making the original movie
costumes. The difference being is that Jessica is doing ALL the work
herself.
Neil Moxham's POTApedia article was a reminder for me to get off my
tuckus and see if there is anything I can contribute myself. The wiki
will never answer the many things that are in dispute among fans, but it
is important that we at least have all the facts archived. This is
especially important for a franchise like POTA where we seem to lose
those few people every year who had personal experience of the original
prodution as it took place. Soon they will all be gone and then projects
like the wiki will be the only authoritative sources we have.
It was nice seeing "Begins" again, and its been so long since I've last
read it, it was nearly 'new' to me. Nice work Michael and Neil. Reminds
me that I should also revisit Gideon too.
But the best. The BEST, was the awesome 'Kirby' style GENESIS comic by
Neil. I thought I had seen it all with the many different illustrations
and styles that he's treated us over the years, but he really nailed the
vintage style aimed for here. I really felt just like I was back in the
70's. Can't say how much I'm looking to seeing this story continue, not
only for the art, but for the plot being presented as well.
Now if we can only be assured that we see another Forbidden Zine. I know
that the reception has been lackluster. The price point is high, but
understandable because of the print quality. As much as I like the
quality and would be willing to pay for another just like it, I would be
willing to compromise if it brings more readers. Time will tell.
A big thank you to all who contributed articles, art or helped out in
any other way. But and even bigger thanks to Michael and Neil, for
accomplishing what they set out to do.

They all look awesome and incredibly entertaining on the big screen. It is a huge difference.

I got to admit Harastas, that you came to musics(weather mine or Jerrys) defence because you know to insult music to some people is like insulting some guys favorite football team. Its all like I said subjective and I and the rest of you are Apes fans so are usaully granted alittle slack. I bought up Kiss (because most people tend to pick on Kiss proponents on many web sites and its silly). To insult others tastes in music is really neanderthal and infantile. Though I really dont mind some early Kiss. Im a typical Beethoven, Beatles, Beach Boys(Smile,Pet Sounds), King Crimson, Herb Alpert and TJB and Gershwin lover. Goldsmith and Rosenman are great, and Tom Scotts music for Conquest I thought was genius esp. when he only had a small brass section 15 or less to do it. Im a musician and trained in music and its a shame if you cant tell the irony and compositional style Goldsmith was using in Escape. Its the reverse of Planet and he did it wonderfully. You want me to get in to Aeloian, dORIAN CADANCES AND ALL THE TECHNICAL JARGON THAT GOLDSMITH USES JUST TO BACK UP A POINT OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF HIS STYLE FOR ESCAPE. Its just a matter of taste. But I guess you think Kiss(the group) is great.{ The cap. lock got stuck and I didnt feel like correcting it}. As a musician you really should not question a piece of music it is an art and very very subjective, except for Kiss..HaHa.

However, the same can be said of many movies from that era. This was the pre-Star Wars period and studios made many films with modest budgets. It wasn't all tent pole films and blockbusters back then like it is today.

A matter of taste...my point exactly. Just like with the POTA sequels...I prefer Conquest while others like Escape or Beneath. Also, if we never questioned one another in terms of taste, then we wouldn't really be expressing our opinions then would we? It's part of what makes us human. BTW, neanderthals are thought to have been rather intelligent...that's the modern opinion anyway. So why is insulting others tastes in music infantile? Why not other categories? Oh, maybe it's b/c your a musician. I'm sure that there are styles of music that you do not like. Henry Rollins, who has a strong musical background, has insulted Edie Brickell quite a bit over the years by saying what she composes isn't really music. I guess he must be infantile. Either that or your point is just ridiculous. I'll go with the
latter. You do notice that you're insulting me for insulting music, right? That's a little bit hypocritical. FYI, my favorite football team is the Indianapolis Colts so insult away if you feel the need. We all have our preferences and I'm just not as big on the sounds of the 70's. So you can have your ABBA and your Bee Gees, just don't try to force it on me. We are allowed to express our opinions. It does not make us "infantile" to do so...even when it comes to your precious music.

The set in DOLLY that became BENEATH's mutant cathedral was called the Harmonia Gardens and was a very elaborate set. Here's a link to a clip of it on You Tube:

But even if wikipedia is wrong and the film is set 10 years later at the turn of the century, the use of the stairs is historically inaccurate since they didn't start building the current terminal building until 1903 and it wasn't completed until 1913.

Sounds to me like you have great taste in music.
Early KISS Rocks! Though I am confused as to
why they were chosen to be a Kid's Show Band
for Nickelodeon, since all their songs seem to be
about sex. What are they going to sing? Lick It
Up? Cold Gin? Meet You In The Ladies Room?
I understand the appeal of the theatrics. At least
I understood that before I understood the lyrics. I
just wonder if "The Kids" will think Baby Driver is
about a youngster with getting a Learners Permit.

I was just thinking about that the
other day. They say never meet
your heroes, because you'll only
be disappointed. When you stop
to think about it, it's not the person
but the persona of a larger than life
character, or a carefully manufactured
public image that gets worshiped, and
not the person themselves. Maybe it's
because I'm not a star struck type that
I don't feel like it's a big deal to meet a
celebrity. Kim was really the only one
who had that effect on me. And she did
not disappoint. She was just as nice in
person as she seemed to be on camera.
Maybe if you got to know someone well
enough to be disappointed in them, they
would start to seem more like a person.
John Lydon comes to mind. Now that
Malcolm is dead, he has nothing but nice
things to say about him. That's not the
John I know. He and Henry should
be great friends . . . if they had any. ; )

I know Henry "Hank Garfield" Rollins.
And I know Edie ButterBrickle-Simon.,
aka Toe Jam. And to be honest neither
has the right to insult the other about
music. Henry is a dick, so I expect that.
But Greg was the real genius of Black
Flag. What he invented was way over all
our heads. It's jazz but it's not. It's rock
but it's not. He came up with something
original. Henry just happened to be last
of the four singers Black Flag had. And his
band is just a poor imitation of Black Flag.
Edie just took Ricky Lee Jones' vocals and
put it over a Jerry Garcia guitar line, because
all of the New Bohemians are hardcore Dead
Heads who worship the Grateful Dead and
collect cassettes of board mixes from shows
like Red Rocks ' 78. She's probably still just
be just that if I hadn't told her to stop wearing
that stupid beret, 'cause that's what she
looked like, and it was a little too obvious.

.htmlHave you tried the Heritage Auctions site (www.ha.com)? Everthing seems to turn up there sooner or later.

The masks are bad, but the flip over the horse was good.
When did Apemania go to Spain? Ursus' Spanish is really good.

I didn't realize that POTA's home studio is 75
years young in 2010. And to sellabrate, er, I mean celebrate, they are gearing
up for a big year long promotion, including a new website: www.fox75th.com . The link below has a list of
some of the DVDs that will be coming out this year. "Rocky Horror" on blu-ray?
I'm there! Nothing Apes-wise so far (well, except for filming a new movie) but
we don't want to bite the hand that feeds Cornelius. Happy Anniversary, Fox! We
wouldn't be here without you.

.html.html Is there any value to old POTA books? I work at a library and grabbed myself a movie edition of the Bouille novel that somebody donated with a bunch of old books. It has the ape head on the cover, and somewhere there's the raft. Back cover has the cage scene with Taylor and Nova. It's not in perfect condition by any means, but it's not falling apart or anything. Just shows the unavoidable age signs when a book hasn't been kept in immaculate condition. I didn't see any tears or stains or missing pages or anything like that.
I already have a copy of the original book, but I couldn't pass up this one, even if it's not worth much. :)
Mel (who might donate or sell the newer copy or something, not sure yet)

There are 18 PLANET French Lobby cards?!!!! I'd like to know what the other eight are. You wouldn't happen to have a flatbed scanner, would you?

.htmlNO scanner, but going through them I noticed that 2 of them were my German cards. I kept the foreign cards together because they were the last Apes stuff I ever bought in 1980 and I never filed them like the rest of my stuff(just put them in my closet). Ill find a way soon because I have alot of cool stuff that I talk about and Im getting sick of telling everyone and not proving it. My kids will be getting me a "great" scanner soon. John M.

Does anyone know anything about the two publications, Apronas Planet and Comics Unlimited. CU looks like it was from the UK.

.htmlLooking at the FOX site, I'm annoyed that they didn't feature POTA on one of the posters. It's one of the most iconic films in their history yet the did a poster for 'Independence Day'. Strange.
BTW There is a great article from yesterday's LA Times that cites POTA as one of the films that save the studio in the '60s.
