I'm a bit partial to July 14th myself. It is a signifigant date from the film and is in line with the summer event that Rory discussed.

So right now the dates we've discussed are:

  • February 8th
  • April 3rd
  • July 4th
  • July 14th
  • November 25th

Let me know if I missed any date. In a few days I'll create a poll and everyone can vote on it.

Well, at least Fox knows that APES movies are summer movies.

It's "Caesar", the "Conquest"esque prequel. Probably better thought of as a reboot; I don't think it will connect to the originals. A kind of "do over".  Reportedly shooting in Vancouver in 2 months so it's probably too late to stop this train. They've already got the studio reserved.

I hate it when PLANET is called a "camp classic."

Anyway, a nice looking theatre.  Don't think there's anyone here likely to go, so we won't know the print quality.

I hope they do look like the original,or it will most likely suck like the last attempt.
CGI looks horrible so I hope they do not go that route.
I will continue to hope until I see what they do.
Again if the studio has any brains they will be faithful to the original Apes look, and the only one that will ever matter.

All the posts on line from generic bloggers is also negative!

If they do not make a new movie done in the current modern style than a new movie will NEVER be made
and that is the end of the franchise!

I don't care if it is the end of the franchise if they make a new movie that I am not going to like.

The most recent version by Tim Burton was not enough of the franchise for me to get excited.  I saw it in the theater, but despite the fact that I have over a thousand VHS and DVDs, I have not purchased it.  It was not good enough for me to buy, and I don't see any particular advantages that have fallen to the rest of us as a result of that movie either.  I suspect that if it I see a really good buy on it, I might get it, but not because I feel that it is part of the POTA franchise, but rather because it is a marginal science fiction movie and a fair portion of my DVD collection is science fiction.

The recent King Kong and Star Trek were excellent movies and I both saw them in the theater and purchased the DVDs.  If I had confidence that the new movie would be like that, I would be more excited.  I don't have that confidence.  Several things bother me.  The CGI part bothers me.  The practical make up and Ape City were very interesting and exciting.  The setting of contemporary San Francisco strikes me as a cheap way to make a movie.  Film in San Francisco and edit in some Apes.  It seems a bit of a cheat to me.

A POTA movie that does not have any of the original characters does not seem like much of a POTA movie.  It's one of the reasons even some of the original movies were not that satisfying.  I hope the new movie will be good.  I just don't think it will be good.

your opinion is my opinion, too. Stop with POTA "experiences"!
I am a PLANET OF THE APES fan, so I want one INTELIGENT MOTION PICTURE, not a joke like the "new vision" (poor screenplay, ridiculous make-up, stupid characters...) like I saw in Burton's allegoric movie!

Have a nice weekend, Ape friends!

I'm happy a new POTA movie is being made. As far as the bloggers, they tend to be negative about everything. It's like their job.

I understand that many fans have their concerns about the new film. After the 2001 Tim "Hack Director" Burton fiasco, I can't blame anyone for being worried that they are screwing it up again. They have to get it right this time or there will be no new POTA movies for another 20 years.

I'm not bothered by the CGI apes, like the final film itself. I'll wait until I see the final product before passing judgement.

One minor concern I have is that the film is set in San Francisco. It makes me think that the screenwriters read Marvel's timeline and mistakenly believe that it was the setting for Conquest.

CGI may be good enough for overly tall smurfs but not for the APES.

Read between the lines here people.  FOX is giving excuses for non-talent.  First, by making it take place within our time period and present setting they would save money if done as a live action film.  However, by using that same setting in a CGI setting there is no reason to confine it.  They actually are openning options where they can do anything - as with any animated feature - so why retell what was already done!?  Why can't they build on it and expand the storyline, and the franchise.  They won't do that because they don't have the talent to figure it out.  Instead they are "re-booting".  It's always easy to re-write someting (even if it's bad) since there's already a draft to work off of.  Hacks.
Why don't they pull the drafts written by Serling and use material abandoned for film and series?
No doubt what Serling came up with, though abandoned is miles above what today's jerks can do.  He had talent and brains.  Today they all study the same films in college and then steal from them and call it homage.  Their egos are bigger than their imagination and they all think they can top what is alread classic by "rebooting".  It's been proven it doesn't work.

I hope they do look like the original,or it will most likely suck like the last attempt.
CGI looks horrible so I hope they do not go that route.
I will continue to hope until I see what they do.
Again if the studio has any brains they will be faithful to the original Apes look, and the only one that will ever matter.

I actually have a good vibe about this.  I don't think style matters much, it all depends on how good the script is as to whether it's a franchise killer.  Sounds like Fox has plans for further ones.  Anyway, it's hard to imagine it could be any worse than that Burton debacle -- if that didn't kill the franchise for Fox, it'll take some sort of deadly bacillus to stop those bastards.

Oh, come on!  You're too cynical.  That CGI Lawgiver on the Blu-rays is something cheap.  The CGI apes in the new movie will be done on the level of that creepy thing in the LORD OF THE RING movies.  Can't recall the name of it -- the thing that kept saying "My precious."
Anyway, if the CGI isn't as good as that, Fox might as well be dead.

I'm pretty confident that Caesar can conquer humanity. But can he conquer the box office in 2011, or at least put in a good enough showing that there are sequels? Obviously a lot of that has to do with the quality of the film (Fox!) and word of mouth. But let's face it, in the fast paced world of modern movie distribution hype and spectacle play their part. Maybe the most asked question about movies is: "Why do they keep remaking movies over and sequelize to death? Don't they have any original ideas anymore?" The answer is: Yes, there's plenty of original ideas, but the opening weekend is king and the safe bet is the presold. That used to mean movie stars but more it's become the franchise concept.
POTA2001 had a great opening weekend so it's a concept that works. The bad word of mouth kept it from reaching it's potential. The new one, currently called "Rise of the Apes", has been staked out for June 24 2011. That's prime summer real estate and as we know the summer movie schedules have become a bloodbath. The very weekend it opens will literally be a box-office race because the Pixar sequel "Cars 2" and the next (reportedly last) "Fast and Furious" movie open. OK...OK. Those films seem to have a different audience than the sci-fi "Apes" so it seems like good counterprogramming.
But in the summer season as a whole, there's going to be stiff competition to stand out. Summer 2011 will see "Transformers 3", the comic book movies "Green Lantern", "Capt. America" and "Thor" (luckily no already established superheroes), "Pirates of the Caribbean 4", Fox's own "X-Men" prequel, "Scream 4", "Kung-Fu Panda 2", and a Spielberg WW1 horse movie "Warhorse". And the one that will probably wipe the floor with all of them: the final "Harry Potter" (until the reboot).
It's anybody's guess how things will turn out. It's still anybody's guess how 2010 will turn out ("Iron Man 2" is reportedly not doing as good as expected, though it's still minting money). But for those hoping for a new "Ape" franchise it's a big part of the equation.

film, my friend despised it. (I took him years later to see Star Trek:
The Motion Picture and he despised that also.)I still have the program
they sold that night and had it signed by its stars, Keir Dullea and
Gary Lockwood, at a Chiller Theater several years ago. After we left
the theater and were walking to the subway at 42nd St., we saw many
police officers on duty and people exiting limos. It turned out that
the TONY awards were being given that night. I also saw Planet of the
Apes at the Capitol. I remember that the theater was so jammed, people
were sitting in the aisles. It is still one of my all-time favorites.
Other films I saw at the Capital were The Dirty Dozen and In the Heat
of the Night. It was another lavish and beautiful Loews theater.

I don't mind sequels and spin offs.  5 POTA ape movies, TV show, cartoon and books and comics, sure, works for me.

What bothers me is the concept of the sequel with nearly no relationship to the original.  I think of a sequel as a part in a series, same concepts, ideas and characters, but new stories for them.  Fill in the blank spaces, clear up the mysteries, give us some now characters and stories.

Lost in Space was a fun campy TV show and they gave us a movie that was awful with only the most tenuous relationship to the original.

The Tim Burton Planet of the Apes.  Nothing like I think of when I hear POTA.

Use the name to draw us in then disappoint us with something totally different.

Subject: [pota] POTA vs. 2011

OK...OK. I like this date the best.

It directly relates to the first movie.

Since the first movie started it all, it would seem the best movie to choose from.

It does not conflict with other US holidays, Independence Day or Thanksgiving Day.

Picking the same date as an existing holiday simply means zero media coverage and conflicts with others who are celebrating the other holiday.

It is a summer date in the Northern Hemisphere, where the events in the movie take place.
The movie takes place in good weather, on bright sunny days.  It makes sense to celebrate in the same type of weather.  A November date means deep snow for many of us.

A big Happy Birthday to James Bacon, who (as noted below) is the only person to appear in all 5 of the original POTA films and is 96 years old today.

Bacon had a regular column in the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner from 1966 until 1983. When the POTA films were being shot he would spend a few days on the set shooting his scenes and then write a column about the experience. Unfortunately, since the Herald-Examiner went out of business in 1989, its archives, including Bacon's columns, are not available.

I suppose it depends on the definition of media.

Even a Yahoo group counts as media.

My blogs get over two thousand hits a weeks, so someone is reading them.

I know there are many POTA specific websites and blogs I would think they too would reach thousands of people.

With a new movie coming out, we may get a bump of interest out of that.

I don't expect it to be on the CBS Evening News or David Letterman, but you have to start somewhere.

Even Mothers Day and Talk Like a Pirate Day started off small.

Jackie Earle Haley is still on a roll. The former Kraik ("The Legacy" POTA TV episode) starred in the # 1 movie at the box office about a week ago ("Nightmare on Elm St.") and now his TV show "Human Target" has been renewed for next season. I think it would be great if Jackie could find time to star in the new "Ape" movie (how cool would it be if the actor who played Kraik unwittingly unleashes Apeageddon?). That's not just fan talk, he's at a place in his career where that could happen. I think that would be a smart "nod" to fans instead of the stupid "Take your stinkin' paws off me" lines. Though with his series and his Freddy Krueger contract (he's signed for 3 movies) scheduling would be tough. Ah, who am I kidding? They're going to cast Ben Affleck.

I heard something on the news today that got me thinking
about the Inland Sea where they crashed.  We tend to think
in terms of saltwater when it comes to seas.  But when you
look at the so called Inland Seas of the Middle East and not
all are.  Sure, something like the Dead Sea is even saltier
than the oceans, like The Great Salt Lake.  Others like the
Sea Of Galilee are just large freshwater lakes.  And still
others like the Red Sea and the Black Sea are at least
brackish because of inlets to a sea or open ocean, the
amount of salinity depending their altitude in relation
to sea level and sources of other waterways.  The
real question is, if the water had tested drinkable,
would they have rehydrated and refilled their
canteens from it? my guess is if they can
test soil and they new they had to walk
out of the desert they would have.

A line cut from the film say the scarecrows were put up by the Hunt Club. The fur could be the fur of other animals that they hunted.

Another line in the script but cut from the final final, Dodge tests the water and says that it is close to 25% salinity.

The script is available on Hunter's site: https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_finalshoot1.pdf

I've been reading today how studios are 'risk averse' in the current financial climate, which is why they want a built in franchise fanbase and are dusting down old properties. So, we get an Apes re-boot.I'm excited about it, but a little scared too.If we're looking at a rebellion or 'rise' of the Apes, that will need violence on Conquest levels to be realistic. But would Conquest get a general certificate today--which the studio will definitely want? There's nothing worse than a family friendly 'violent' movie.I'd be very worried about a compromised script falling between two stools.Otherwise, I'm thrilled about new Apes! John, Scrolls.

There's nothing in PLANET to imply that apes do not kill other apes -- maybe not murder their brothers to possess their brother's things like Man done did do -- but the "Ape Shall Never Kill Ape" thing is another one of those wonder Paul Dehn contrivances that belongs exclusively to the world of the sequels, not the world of the original.

In Beneath when the lawgiver is frying Zaius says "bid your soldiers to shoot our poor people" and Ursus replies " I cant order them to do what our Lawgiver has forbidden.."Ape Shall not Kill Ape". If I remember right. The "Hang for high treason" could just be an expression, like " I'll kill you if you do that" and so on. I believe that the Ape shall not kill Ape was even implied in POTA, the gorillas could of simply been ordered to shoot everyone and be done with it. Its anyones guess...John M.

Your very "hard" on the Apes sequels arent you. Even for the fact that they were made changed cinema history and just for that they should be honnered. Without the sequels and the "Go Ape" festivals Planet of the Apes would of just been another great movie. A jem from the past but not a phenomenom and not something we would be talking about nearly as much as we do. Just my opinion..John M.

My take is the humans got some apes and put those up to scare off apes. Those scarecrows look specifically ape color.

But it's true, "Planet" was made before "Ape Shall Not Kill Ape" in "Beneath", but from what we know of Zauis it probably wasn't put up by apes. Hunt Club be damned!

I would think if the water was drinkable, they could stay in the raft and circumnavigate the lake looking for good places to stay.  Also there could be fish in there too.
