.html Another problem that I have is with the whole cycle theory - at some
point there had to be a time when the apes rose WITHOUT the intervention
of Ceasar - to me this would or should be the basis of this prequel - if
i remember rightly the future predicted at the end of the last Original
Apes sequel wasa not necessarily the one that would end in the fashion
of beneath.

In that case the Ingram with the Maxim Suppressor on it.
There will still be some muzzle climb, but less than a Thompson.

I think they should have used Battle for a promo episode/starting off place- for the TV series though. But that's just me- LOL

Yep. The makeup was incredible. Rick Baker is a genius-his specialty IS apes. I loved Thade and Attar.I loved the costumes and the design of the ape city. (The shot of them leaving the underground passage with the twin moons was beautiful) The Jungle set . Incredible. But watching the first apes the other night made me realize that the real problem with the 2001 film was just when they started something good (Thade's discussion with his father. The initial TimeWave effect. Thade's love of Ari. Thade's murder of his Lieutenants to keep the human's arrival secret. The discovery of the ship. Thade's Relationship of trust with Attar.) they would back off and do something completely silly and goofy. I mean Conquest was one of the lowest budgeted but I absolutely am obsessed with that movie and can't get enough of it! I love Tim Burton too-but it was just too much novelty and "Hey we're making fun of this wacky silly premise.
Ape Society = funny!" for the series. And...really thinking on it.. a lot was great, even fantastic-but in the end it had too much poking fun at the universe and they backed of of the serious, thoughtful plain good old acting and brain exercise the first films had. The mirror of human society in ape eyes. Gone. My problem was just the sheer amount of quirkiness and goofiness that killed the absolutely wonderful things the film had. I mean??? 1.) Mark Walberg. I'm sure he's a great actor to some people-but he's never won me over in any film I've seen him in-In Apes he consistently looked bored and constipated. Like he was passing through the world-not reacting to it 2.) Lot of silliness (Ape gang with boombox and mylar clothing? , little ape girl with human in cage???? 3.) child apes with "Team" clothing. 4.)Sure, Tim's then-girlfriend Lisa Marie is hot but the courtship dance on the bed was just way over the top. But I still love some things about
the film- Tim Roth did an incredible job (His spent rage against the bulletproof plexiglass-go to a zoo that has plexiglass and you'll see chimps do JUST that. Scary!) . And always love Michael Duncan Clarke. (BOW YOUR HEADS!! :) ) I loved the music, Loved the makeup and Thade and Attar. ESPECIALLY loved the cameo by Mr. Heston and Linda Harrison (BUT WHY was this still incredibly beautiful, amazing woman not given more than a literal four second cameo and hidden among extras???? We'll never get another chance to have these two amazingly wonderful people in an Apes Film-but I'm glad they were both "Home" with us to re-start the franchise and re-open the world we all share.) But I hope the new film brings apes back to the rest of the world-My Love for it will never give out...least not til' I do. ;)

My kids and most younger people think the originals are boring. So the studio opted for a summer blockbuster action film instead. Rise of the Apes no doubt will be the same.

Because even as kids-we all pick up our various regional dialects and carry them through our lives. Of course, Roddy's inflection is AMAZING. Can't get enough of watching the original films. I'd probably do it 24/7 if I could. I LOVE this group!

Or get an actual writer of merit and who might actually care about what he is writing for the screen plays if not. 1968 had Rod Serling doing treatments as we all know, but get someone to do the series reboot Justice. I love the old BSG, but Ron Moore took the concept and made an amazing new series with BSG that stood on it's own as almost something completely different and good <not every ep was perfect but there were a ton of eps that were brilliant in my opinion>. I still watch both and can appreciate both.
It seemd like Burton was in over his head, and didn't get "it".

"Planet" and "Escape" are considered "the best"
of the films, but for the general public who are not true believers I'd say
"Beneath" is the most popular. "Planet" might be but "Beneath" seems to get the
most play on TV. If "Planet" is the Beatles then "Beneath" is the Rolling
Stones. It has the "bad boy" factor. "Planet" has the Statue of Liberty and
Chuck's lines, but "Beneath" has the end of the world, the ape march in the
desert, the Lawgiver's bloodletting, Ursus, the mutants unmasking, the scary
mutant inquisitor, worshipping the bomb, the King Kong moment with Natalie
Trundy's hair, Nova's first words ...the producers wanted "shocks" and
folks remember these.
I'd say it's at least the most popular of the
sequels. I would submit "Escape" is the least popular, because it's present day
and there's few apes.

It was announced today that "Alice in Wonderland",
directed by our own Tim Burton, has become the 6th film ever to pass $ 1 billion
in worldwide box office. The others are : 1. "Avatar" (the only one to pass $ 2
billion); 2. "Titanic"; 3. "LOTR: Return of the King"; 4. "Pirates 2: Dead Man's
Chest"; 5. "The Dark Knight". Of those 6, 4 were directed by dudes who spent
time developing the POTA reboot.
I'm sure all Ape fans would like to congratulate
Mr. Burton on this achievement. (the sound of crickets is heard)

.htmlThanks man- appreciate your kind words!
Not concrete plans yet, as my original plan was to make Audio Dramas of all 5 movies, expand on the parts I always wanted to see, and just have fun with the movies that have so been a part of my life since I used to race home on my bicycle from elementary school for ape week in the 70's.
Thouhg the idea is there for the book as well as the TV series and some of the comics too, always loved the pirate one.
Though since this is a hobby- it'll be awhile as I spend anywhere from 35-60 hours a production on the mixes. Aboyutt 2 hours a day.
So bear with me my friend.
And again thank you for the kind words and from all here who have been so kind to me and my AD's and just groovy overall- love this POTA Yahoo!

There's something unsatisfying about all the sequels.
Escape isn't in the "Planet"
Beneath has a fake Cornelius
Conquest had the fight scenes edit
and Battle was just crap.

I've always said there was a decent movie in there, somewhere.
If you just edit out Limbo's quips and Heston entirely it plays
better.
But you're right. they'd start down the road to taking it seriously
and
ruin it with a reference joke, or something that should have ended up
on the editing room floor. I blame that 3 monkeys gag they left
in the
original court scene. Never ever should have made the final
release.

Yep. The makeup was incredible. Rick Baker is a genius-his specialty IS
apes. I loved Thade and Attar.I loved the costumes and the design of the ape
city. (The shot of them leaving the underground passage with the twin moons
was beautiful) The Jungle set . Incredible. But watching the first apes the
other night made me realize that the real problem with the 2001 film was just
when they started something good (Thade's discussion with his father. The
initial TimeWave effect. Thade's love of Ari. Thade's murder of his
Lieutenants to keep the human's arrival secret. The discovery of the ship.
Thade's Relationship of trust with Attar.) they would back off and do
something completely silly and goofy. I mean Conquest was one of the lowest
budgeted but I absolutely am obsessed with that movie and can't get enough of
it! I love Tim Burton too-but it was just too much novelty and "Hey we're
making fun of this wacky silly premise. Ape Society = funny!" for the serie s.
And...really thinking on it.. a lot was great, even fantastic-but in the end
it had too much poking fun at the universe and they backed of of the serious,
thoughtful plain good old acting and brain exercise the first films had. The
mirror of human society in ape eyes. Gone. My problem was just the sheer
amount of quirkiness and goofiness that killed the absolutely wonderful things
the film had. I mean??? 1.) Mark Walberg. I'm sure he's a great actor to some
people-but he's never won me over in any film I've seen him in-In Apes he
consistently looked bored and constipated. Like he was passing through the
world-not reacting to it 2.) Lot of silliness (Ape gang with boombox and mylar
clothing? , little ape girl with human in cage???? 3.) child apes with "Team"
clothing. 4.)Sure, Tim's then-girlfriend Lisa Marie is hot but the courtship
dance on the bed was just way over the top. But I still love some things about
the film- Tim Roth did an incredible job (His spent rage against the
bulletproof plexiglass-go to a zoo that has plexiglass and you'll see chimps
do JUST that. Scary!) . And always love Michael Duncan Clarke. (BOW YOUR
HEADS!! :) ) I loved the music, Loved the makeup and Thade and Attar.
ESPECIALLY loved the cameo by Mr. Heston and Linda Harrison (BUT WHY was this
still incredibly beautiful, amazing woman not given more than a literal four
second cameo and hidden among extras???? We'll never get another chance to
have these two amazingly wonderful people in an Apes Film-but I'm glad they
were both "Home" with us to re-start the franchise and re-open the world we
all share.) But I hope the new film brings apes back to the rest of the
world-My Love for it will never give out...least not til' I do. ;)

Why do some of the Apes have an English
accent when others don't? Because some
of the actors were from England! That's why!
All except Kim. Her's was an affectation. She
slips back and forth. The reason for that is
after the war she went to England to shoot
A Matter Of Life And Death (Stairway To Heaven)
but shooting was delayed for months and by the
time they started she'd picked up the dreaded Limey
Lilt. This was not good, especially since they had
hired her and flown her in to play an American because
she was an American - a pivotal plot point in the
storyline.
In the end they had to bring in a Canadian voice coach
to talk her down so she could find her voice again. But
by the time she wrapped on the shoot she never quite
sounded the same. Just a bit of film history for you.

Doing a faithful adaptation of Boulle's novel was what I wanted Fox to do back in the nineties, but once they made that "egregious" (to quote J.C.) re-imagining, then that boat sailed away -- at least in my lifetime.

I think the statement is a personal one to begin with and really is kinda indefensible. The Idea of "lists" and "Most Popular" is kinda juvenille and self-defeating to begin with. Everyone claims that "ALL!!!!!" Star Wars fans love "The Empire Strikes Back" the most. Well, the first film "A New Hope" is my favorite. The people making the lists write their own personal favorites and don't speak for me. Empire doesn't come close to the feelings the first film gave me. Could care less what people say and I'm not gonna argue with them as it's kinda dumb considering it's all make believe worlds anyway. And as far as Apes, Heck, even Battle has those wonderful quiet scenes of Father and Son (Any Roddy in Apes is Damn Great!!!) and fantastic scenery of bombed out city (Yep. Take that Terminator,The Day After and countless other films much later. Course Twilight Zone did pretty darn good too)
Those ruins-It was a hint of the world beyond and awesome ..if even briefly. And in Ape Camp, Pretty cool treehouses.Paul Williams was also a pretty neat addition-not typical casting for any time period. I also loved the interplay between the humans and the apes in exploring the subterran facility and finding the control center. Tension in that scene decades later- still great. It's where the button that created the world of the apes and all the ruin started. Imagine yourself in a postapocalyptic world and realizing you're in the bunker where the ape revolt went down-where it all started with an ally who could possibly find you to be an enemy. I think you can find good in a lot of things if you try. Not saying you have to love it all unconditionally-but I think if the words "Sucks", "Crap", "Not as good as" and "Not what I was expecting" were removed from general lexicon of useage-it would create problems for a lot of people in writing
their reviews. It's a high standard to expect a lot from these films-most of which are over 30-40 years old and (still hard to believe) were designed as family films. It was a different world then-quick and low budget were (and still are) the rule. Get the product out as fast as possible before the kids stop liking the apes. Sell the figures and the playsets. I don't think the studio was on the same wavelength as the filmmakers even from the begining. Not much has changed. We've just gotten spoiled by big budgets. Course, I don't see any excuse at all nowdays with the resources studios have-Zero excuse to put out crap. But in the 60's and 70's Budget cuts and a shortsighted studio team had a Lot to do with the problems. Even "Beneath" has the terrible pullover masks and they hadn't even started the worst of the budget cuts the following sequels had. But holy crap, The good general is giving it his all in that speech and we're still quoting it
decades later and trying to snare the figures from Sideshow and Hot Toys. How many properties can claim that??? Star Trek and James Bond Maybe. And "Escape" and "Conquest" did fantastically for the budgets they were given. I love em all and still find them all superior to half the stuff out nowdays-even the TV series-which was amazing and great too.

One of the purposes of this group is for fans to come together and discuss the various aspects of the world of POTA. If any member expresses and opinion or makes a statement that another disagrees with, they are free to argue the issue. But no statement is "indefensible" unless it is a personal insult or flame directed at other member. We welcome all opinions and points-of-view as long as they are expressed in a courteous manner that shows respect for other members. If anyone has a problem with that, then it is suggested that you go elsewhere.

.htmlYep. I do like the book a lot (have an original copy plus the 2001 version with what looks like Krull in Ape helmet on cover. (Gotta love Pierre's description of Nova-that would have probably been way too much sexuality for Hollywood in any period-but I like the "compromise" for the first film as we all know Linda Harrison is forever GAWGEOUS!) The Hunt is great and I still love the surprise ending on the ship with the identity reveal.

.html Got my copy of the new Simian Scrolls the other day. It may be my favorite issue so far, or at least a close second to issue 6.
Lots of great interviews in this issue, but my favorite two may be the ones with Jacqueline Scott done by Tim Parati and Eileen Dietz donw by Dean Preston. Both actresses appeared in my favorite episode of the TV series - The Good Seeds.
Another great interview this issue is the one with Drew Gaska by Dave Ballard. I think it's the most information I've seen in one place regarding the upcoming Conspiracy novel, with lots of things I hadn't read elsewhere. Dave also wrote great tributes for two recently departed Apes actors: Ricardo Montalban and James Whitmore. The one for Ricardo Montalban was especially well done.
And the unpublished comic story by Sam Argo - fantastic! So great to be able to see this.
Frankly, there isn't a dud article in the entire issue. Even the lone article devoted to PotA 2001 is a stand-out one. It almost (almost!) made me want to pop in the DVD and subject myself to watching the film again.
Well done everyone!

So. most of the POTA fans obviously hate POTA
'01. I look at it as an action film with apes. Why are most of you
sooo against letting it be? There have been numerous other movies that
have been remade and they just go on sitting quietly on the shelf. But not
POTA. Why? Sometimes the books are followed, sometimes not.
But POTA being "reimagined" ( with the ending being the only thing remotely
resembling the book) is BLASPHEMY! I don't understand. Wizard of Oz,
Alice in Wonderland, King Kong, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, Night of the
Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead---just to name a few---don't get the sheer hatred
that Burton's Planet gets.

But the story for the most part wasn't there for me. Even re-imagined, and I was wanting to like this movie, but I just think it fell short. Or in my opinion- something was missing to make me care about the characters. I just didn't for the most part- though dug the evil Chimp General, Maybe if there had been 15 more minutes of back story or something.... Maybe I just don't like Mark W.... Whatever the reason- for me, overall it couldn't hold a torch to the original or any of the sequels- and the story just didn't grip me though I wanted it too.
Just my opinion.

said that ALL (note NOT most) Lost in Space fans hated the Movie - I
guess it's a good indication of how much the originals meant to fan and
a bad indicator of how 'MOST' fans react.

Few and far between....
The entire movie feels like it was shot on a soundstage. The jungle
never for a second makes you believe it's outdoors.
The stupid jokes (mostly from Limbo) completely ruin everything else.
The makeup for Helena Bonham Carter was ridiculous.
The ending made no sense whatsoever, in any kind of way.

Flag 1: Based on the US flag

A new poll will be set up so everyone can vote for their favorite flag.

I totally agree. I was never a Burton fan in the first place. I even hate his Batmen movies that many others like. His style just doesn't do anything for me. I enjoy dark humor, but when it is mixed with camp...I just can't stand it. As a matter-of-fact, I just hate camp in movies, period. Keep that stuff out of POTA movies. "Our" franchise is supposed to be, despite some humor, quite serious. Burton throws in far too much stupidity for any of his movies to be taken seriously. Where were the social and political messages/critiques/metaphors? If he wants to take a dump on Batman...fine. There was already a precedent set with the 60's TV series. But Planet of the Apes is supposed to make you walk out of a theater thinking about the issues presented...not moronically laughing and saying aloud "Dang
ya'll, them thar monkey's suuure was funny!!" Barf.

Not saying I prefer it -- wish they were sticking with makeups --, but I'm not worried that it won't work. There will be shots that won't look as good as the real thing, but I think for the most part it'll be fine.

Instead of deep, adult issues, we could have a comic cuts Chimp screaming 'Okay Dokeez Meester SEEEZZARRR, meeza help you wit dose bombad humans!!!'.That' s the beauty of CGI, you can eliminate things like actor's nuances, improvisation and character development and just get cartooning straight away, to a deadline. You don't have to worry about suprises with the acting performance, nor input from the artists and the software is ready made for the video game.If there's one thing FIVE legendary, fantastically successful movies teaches us, it must be that prosthetics and real actors just don't work.CGI? I would let it be if they took it off cable, destroyed all the DVDs and burned every copy & negative of the film. It is a terrible film that tarnishes the entire POTA franchise.
As far as Burton, I was never a fan of his and other than a handful of his films, mainly the early ones, I've found most of his work pointless and unwatchable crap.
I haven't seen it -- Why would I? -- but supposedly he's done to the classic ALICE IN WONDERLAND what he done did to POTA. Burton's got a plastic, one-note imagination, which would be fine if he'd just stick to re-imagining plastic.

The winner of the runoff poll is the July 14th date. Unfortunately, there is not enough lead time this year to do anything big but we can still celebrate it in the group.
One of the suggestions was to create a POTA day flag. An initial prototype was made up as an example but since then three candidate flags have been created for everyone to choose from. They are:
Wait.... sorry, James, but I don't care for any of yours (don't like the colors). Why not a contest where group members submit their suggestions, or photoshop work and then we vote on the winner? July 14th could be the day the winner is revealed.

So. most of the POTA fans obviously hate POTA '01. I look at it as an action film with apes. Why are most of you sooo against letting it be? There have been numerous other movies that have been remade and they just go on sitting quietly on the shelf. But not POTA. Why? Sometimes the books are followed, sometimes not. But POTA being "reimagined" ( with the ending being the only thing remotely resembling the book) is BLASPHEMY! I don't understand. Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, King Kong, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead---just to name a few---don't get the sheer hatred that Burton's Planet gets.

Dude, I've seen "alot" of movies in my lifetime -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- Burton's POTA '01 is just simply a bad movie. I don't unstand not seeing that. Even if there had never been a POTA '68, Burton's movie would still suck. The script stinks, the direction is phoned in -- really, I don't think Burton gave much of a shit about it, the acting is either deadpan or over-the-top, and the production design is like a bad acid trip in a cheap Tokyo motel. And let's not forget the incredible sight of apes that can leap through the air! I'm mean really, dude!

.htmlThat's a great idea. The current poll will be canceled (apologies to those who already voted) and anyone that wants to submit their work can do so. Let's say the deadline for submissions is June 30th and we'll start another poll with the winner revealed on July 14th.
To make it even more interesting, the winner will get a prize: the two "Alpha: and "Omega" posters from the upcoming Conspiracy novel (see below). Plus everyone that enters will get a POTA Blu Ray button.
13"x19" Glossy cardstock print entitled "ALPHA" by artist Joe Jusko

13"x19" Glossy cardstock print entitled "OMEGA" by artist Sanjulian

P.S. The colors on the flags were based on the species colors from the movies.

Where is the reference for this on the site? I can’t
find it. I’d like to check it out. Thanks.
