I you went to buy a diamond and it had a little flaw
that look like a Pink Panther then it would be worth
something. That's the original with the 3 Monkeys joke.
But if the gem was cracked all to hell and discolored?
That's Burton's film. It's not an homage, it a parody.

That's the difference between a movie that's
just okay and a great film. If you had to cut
5 minutes, where would you cut. Personally
I'd cut the dessert trek stuff. But as Scheffner
said when asked why it was so long? "It sets
the tone for the whole film." In Burton's? I'd
be spoided for choice in what to cut. Only 5
minutes? How about 10? or 15? Sheesh!

The winner of the runoff poll is the July 14th date. Unfortunately, there is not enough lead time this year to do anything big but we can still celebrate it in the group.
One of the suggestions was to create a POTA day flag. An initial prototype was made up as an example but since then three candidate flags have been created for everyone to choose from. They are:
Flag 1: Based on the US flag

Flag 2: Based on European style flags

Flag 3: Based on the Gorilla Army flags in Beneath:

A new poll will be set up so everyone can vote for their favorite flag.

I changed my mind! I'm going to watch the Sunday afternoon event on the 15th of August. Just not in costume, since the next time I go under the goo I want it to be something I made.

Reshoot in a real outdoor location.
The

Lose the eyebrows and change the wig to something more Ziraesque

The ending made no sense whatsoever, in any kind of

I can't believe they sent out a card in the DVD to explain the

I understood it. It was a head scratchier though. It's not an

The winner of the runoff poll is the July 14th
date. Unfortunately, there is not enough lead time this year to do anything
big but we can still celebrate it in the group.
One of the suggestions was to create a POTA
day flag. An initial prototype was made up as an example but since then
three candidate flags have been created for everyone to choose from. They
are: Wait.... sorry, James, but I
don't care for any of yours (don't like the colors). Why not a contest
where group members submit their suggestions, or photoshop work and then we
vote on the winner? July 14th could be the day the winner is
revealed.

It is a sort of oxymoron that Hollywood does to the fans of big name
properties.
Let's make a movie of the TV show, Lost in Space. Then all the people
who loved Lost in Space will go see the movie. A built in audience.
Then, let's make a movie that has only the vaguest relationship to the
original.
So that built in audience shows up, and is usually disappointed. With
LIS, I wanted the same basic show, with modern special effects. What we
got was not even close to LIS and was not a very good movie either.
At least if the movie is good on it's own merits, it will win over a few
original fans. Usually the remakes are not very good and don't mesh well
with the original, so it gives the fans of the original two reasons to hate
it.
I think that's why POTA fans and LIS fans both dislike the new movies so
much.

That's a great idea. The current poll will be canceled (apologies to those who already voted) and anyone that wants to submit their work can do so. Let's say the deadline for submissions is June 30th and we'll start another poll with the winner revealed on July 14th.
To make it even more interesting, the winner will get a prize: the two "Alpha: and "Omega" posters from the upcoming Conspiracy novel (see below). Plus everyone that enters will get a POTA Blu Ray button.
13"x19" Glossy cardstock print entitled "ALPHA" by artist Joe Jusko
13"x19" Glossy cardstock print entitled "OMEGA" by artist Sanjulian

P.S. The colors on the flags were based on the species colors from the movies.

That's the difference between a movie that's
just okay and a great film. If you had to cut
5 minutes, where would you cut. Personally
I'd cut the dessert trek stuff. But as Scheffner
said when asked why it was so long? "It sets
the tone for the whole film." In Burton's? I'd
be spoided for choice in what to cut. Only 5
minutes? How about 10? or 15? Sheesh!

The problem with LIS was in the original it was a bit like
Gilligan's Island. They would have been off that rock a
dozen times over if Gilligan hadn't blown in nearly every
episode. In LIS you would have thought Dr. Smith was a
mincing pedophile, except instead of going after Will, he
usually sold him to Alien Gypsies show after show. But
I once saw a website that claimed that the subtext for
Gilligan's Island was the Seven Deadly Sins. The Howells
were Greed & Sloth, The Skipper was Gluttony, Ginger was
Vanity, Maryanne was Envy, The Professor was Pride, and
Gilligan was the Devil, keeping them all on the Island. Sort
of a comi-tragic version of LOST! Makes sense to me!

So. most of the POTA fans obviously hate POTA
'01. I look at it as an action film with apes. Why are most of you
sooo against letting it be? There have been numerous other movies that
have been remade and they just go on sitting quietly on the shelf. But
not POTA. Why? Sometimes the books are followed, sometimes
not. But POTA being "reimagined" ( with the ending being the only thing
remotely resembling the book) is BLASPHEMY! I don't understand.
Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, King Kong, Frankenstein, Dracula, The
Wolfman, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead---just to name a
few---don't get the sheer hatred that Burton's Planet gets.

LA has a lot of legal requirements to film in their city. If you are
filming outdoors you have to have at least one police officer on duty, at about
$40 per hour. If you are driving around or blocking streets, the number of
officers goes up. If you have even a small firecracker, you have to have a
fireman on duty too. And so on with many other permits and fees and
etc. Not just the high union payscale, but union benefits and work rules
are expensive in LA too. Not to mention crime and traffic and other
problems that are probably less in Canada.

LA has a lot of legal requirements to film in their city. If you are filming outdoors you have to have at least one police officer on duty, at about $40 per hour. If you are driving around or blocking streets, the number of officers goes up. If you have even a small firecracker, you have to have a fireman on duty too. And so on with many other permits and fees and etc. Not just the high union payscale, but union benefits and work rules are expensive in LA too. Not to mention crime and traffic and other problems that are probably less in Canada.

the US dollar.
It still may be cheaper for some productions as other costs may be
lower, but it would not be for lack of unions.

Burton said in the commentary that he left the
ending wide open so there'd be all kinds of opportunities for the sequel (though
he adds he doesn't think in terms of sequels). He said he talked to Tim Roth
about the sequel so I assume it would have followed Thade. How ape-propriate
that the ending was so devised for a sequel that it turned audiences off and
resulted in no sequel.

You have to assume those that leave earlier
arrive later. Pericles left first but arrived after Marky Mark. We assume Thade
left in the submerged pod way after Marky Mark left (he had to get out of the
ship, find the pod, etc. (perhaps Burton's take on the questionability of Dr.
Milo's exploits leading to "Escape"). Thade leaves waaaay after Marky Mark, I
mean Mr. Wahlberg, and so he arrives waaaay before him on the Earth. Either that
or it's an alternate timeline where the Thade who would've been in the ship
stayed on Earth and took over. Something like that.

You contradicted yourself, sir... You said you
always knew they'd never do another POTA2001 yet you're not sure if they're
doing one now. If it's true they'll never do a sequel to POTA2001 you have
nothing to worry about with "Rise of the Apes".
Yeah, I believed they'd do a sequel because POTA
is too good a franchise to let sit and Burton's did well from a financial
standpoint. The idea that they don't do sequels to bad movies just isn't true. I
think they've lost out on a cash cow the last 10 years by not doing one. They
could've easily done a better sequel and been on to the 4rth POTA film
already (they certainly have continued with the "X-Men" movies even though the
criticism of X3 was worse than POTA2001). So it was an educated guess that
didn't pan out.
But that's fine with me. POTA hid in a dark
corner for a decade and now they can start fresh with a different breed. I hope
a better one. I leave the 2000's with no regrets.
Oh, one more thing. If anybody's listening, that
is. But seen from out here, POTA seems different. Franchises bend, the POTA
storyline seems boundless. It squashes a fan's ego. I feel lonely.
Tell me something, though. Does Fox, that marvel
of a studio, that glorious paradox that sent Boulle's book to the movies, still
make war against integrity? Keep it's audience's children starving for
quality?

I think you're delusional, Veetus! A fourth film based on that turd?!!!! Fox would have by this time so driven a stake into the heart of POTA that it'd would be right up there with the other "great" film series of all time, like The Bowery Boys or Charlie Chan, or have you forgotten how those ended? Fox would have by now done to APES what Universal did to Frankenstein.
Thank the Lawgiver someone at Fox knew better than to do a follow-up to one of the studio's worst films.

Jonathan never knew that Dr Smith was percieved in this way - in fact
after a 'cameo' in THE SIMPSONs (his voice wasnt used but his likeness
was) he contacted Dick Tufeld (the voice of the Robot which was used)
and asked if fans thought that he was gay - he just did not see it -
Camp meant something different back then.

Ok, I'm going to add my two cents to this, not because I love "Lost in Space" (which I don't -- the show rather bores and annoys me now), but because it's another of those "Fox things" I grew up watching and like to think I know pretty well.
Dr. Smith was NOT a pedophile (of course not, just like Anthony Newley in DR. DOOLITTLE isn't one) -- but he sure was put in the position to be taken as one! What he was was a small-minded, self-centered, self-destructive fey (which doesn't mean gay) twit! No, if I were to amuse myself with wondering if Dr. Smith was gay, I'd look more toward his relationship with the robot than with any imagined encounters with Will Robinson.
Oh, the pain, the pain.
And by the way, Roddy McDowall was often VERY fey as Galen, but that doesn't mean Galen was gay -- McDowall, yes, the chimp, no.

I'm not a big fan of remakes, but this time someone got it right. In the remake of Fright Night, Peter Vincent (played by Roddy McDowall in the original) will be played by David Tennant. He is my first choice for ANY part played previously by Roddy.
Jeff B
He kind of annoyed me as Dr. Who. He's more than a little hyper. One would hope that the director of this new FRIGHT NIGHT (like we need a remake of this) can get him to underplay, underplay.

No Alex Young.
The interesting thing is that the producer is
Peter Chernin who used to run Fox and eventually became #2 for the entire News
Corp. Now he's started Chernin Entertainment and "Rise of the Apes" will be
their very first movie, though they have a big TV show that will start before,
"Terra Nova" starring Linda Harrison. OK, not starring Linda, it's dinosaurs and
Spielberg.
Since Chernin is a former Fox guy, one might
assume it's more of the same, but maybe he'll want to make something better as a
movie producer. He certainly has more clout at Fox than another producer might
have.
The producer on the Fox side is once again our
old friend Ralph Winter.

I worry for the franchise if we don't have a 'human' Ape lead, because the Apes are what makes it work.No CGI could replicate, or, more importantly, have the acting insight to instinctively give us, the look of mischievous glee Zira gives when Taylor finally speaks. We need human actors, full stop, not Gollum, not Jar Jar not Shrek. The only CGI character I've come close to suspending disbelief for was Scooby-Doo.It sounds like Rise of the Apes has a really serious premise and Apes deserves the best actors, being Apes, to do the job right.Rant over. I'll submit the tail end of this Karate Kid review as my reply.
And here are five (What! Only FIVE?!!!) stinkers that should
never have dared to compete with the genius of the original version:
- Psycho: Gus van Sant did a shot-by-shot homage to the
original and one has to wonder why. Anne Heche vs. Janet Leigh? Vince Vaughn
vs. Tony Perkins? Puh-leeze!
- Planet of the Apes: You know the look of horror that
crosses Charlton Heston's face at the end of the original when he realizes
he's traveled in time to Earth's future? No doubt that look was on the face of
every movie-goer who had to endure Marky Mark Walhberg in the remake.
- Godzilla: It would be hard to be worse than the extremely
campy original, but the 1998 remake manages to make one long for cheesy
special effects and out of sync dubbed dialogue.
- The Longest Yard: At first the pairing of Adam Sandler
and Chris Rock seems to be brilliant, but despite the pairing of two top comic
there isn't a single funny or fun moment in this updated version of the 1974
movie which starred Burt Reynolds.
- Poseidon: While the 2006 remake of 1972's The Poseidon
Adventure may have had the advantage of three decades of advances in film
special effects, it lacked the heart and ability to generate audience empathy
of the original.

On the heels of last week's poor showing for
"Marmaduke", Fox's "The A-Team" is having to settle for the B-list, with an
expected $27 million for the weekend. The other '80's reboot of the week, "The
Karate Kid", is expecting $ 52 + million. Fox's Tom Cruise movie "Knight
and Day" (co-written by former "Caesar" director Scott Frank) is showing a lack
of interest in prerelease polls and is expected not to do so well (and the
title won't help). That might leave Fox's sci-fi "Predators" to save the summer
for them next month. How all this effects "Rise of the Apes", shooting this
summer, remains to be seen. More pressure? Maybe inspiring them to do something
different, riskier? Sci-fi was Fox's bread and butter this year with
"Avatar".
So far the summer has been considered a
disappointment at the box office, with audiences seeming to give it a big yawn.
The movie that is expected to be a smash (and has been getting great reviews) is
Pixar's "Toy Story 3". As it turns out, Pixar's movie for next year, "Cars
2", goes head to head with "Rise of the Apes". I'm just saying.

I watched HANG 'EM HIGH, starring Clint Eastwood, last night. When
it started, I thought that it felt a whole lot like BENEATH THE PLANET
OF THE APES in the way it was shot. I was not too surprised to see a
few minutes later that it was directed by Ted Post (I'd never seen the
movie before and didn't know that Post directed it).
I thought it was interesting to see that Post's directorial style was
similar enough in both that I could tell it without knowing ahead of
time that he directed HANG 'EM HIGH.

Good god, I thought this post was going to say Ted Post had died! Phew!
Anyway, I'm shocked, Hunter. At your age not to know this! Have you been living in a bubble!
Seriously, the POTA movies are what made me a film buff because I became interested in what the other credits of the cast and crew were, and then it just grew and grew from there. Used to have to hunt for film reference books (I've got a collection), but now it's so easy just going to IMDB.
Just look up Ted Post at IMDB, Hunter, and check out his credits -- AND EDUCATED YOURSELF!!! Have you no intellectual curiosity!

I'm wondering if Hollywood even knows how to pull off a truly good Summer/Tent Pole movie anymore. Everything seems so trite now -- or is it just me getting old?
By the way, Veetus.... Did you say Ralph Winter is producing RISE? If so, my good vibe is turning bad. I don't think Winter knows how to even produce a good bowel movement much less a movie.

On the heels of last week's poor showing for "Marmaduke", Fox's "The A-Team" is having to settle for the B-list, with an expected $27 million for the weekend. The other '80's reboot of the week, "The Karate Kid", is expecting $ 52 + million. Fox's Tom Cruise movie "Knight and Day" (co-written by former "Caesar" director Scott Frank) is showing a lack of interest in prerelease polls and is expected not to do so well (and the title won't help). That might leave Fox's sci-fi "Predators" to save the summer for them next month. How all this effects "Rise of the Apes", shooting this summer, remains to be seen. More pressure? My wife and I saw POTA and Escape at the Egyptian theater this year and
that is the only time we have been to the movies in 2010. Pretty sad
considering how much we love movies and going to the movies. It has been a
very disappointing year.

What can I say? I was raised in a house with my mom and two sisters.
I never saw any of the Clint Eastwood movies until I was in college,
and then I only saw a couple. I've been remedying that the past few
weeks, with lots of great movies: the Dirty Harry movies, PALE RIDER,
UNFORGIVEN, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, HANG 'EM
HIGH, and GRAN TORINO. More on the horizon....

Plenty, but for some reason, it never has really extended to the Apes
directors. Not sure why....
