The current issue of Entertainment Weekly has a three-page story about
this very thing. Box office receipts are way down because everyone
knows the movies they've been releasing a total junk.

Yes, Ralph Winter. I read the casting notice and
Winter's company is on it. Produced a lot of stuff for Fox; all 4 "X-Men",
"Fantastic 4", POTA2001. And some of the original "Star Trek" films.
"Rise" isn't listed on his imdb. It's my
scoop.

I'm wondering if Hollywood
even knows how to pull off a truly good Summer/Tent Pole movie anymore.
Everything seems so trite now -- or is it just me getting old?
By the way, Veetus.... Did you say Ralph Winter is producing RISE? If
so, my good vibe is turning bad. I don't think Winter knows how to even
produce a good bowel movement much less a movie.

My wife and I saw POTA and Escape at the Egyptian theater this year and that is the only time we have been to the movies in 2010. Pretty sad considering how much we love movies and going to the movies. It has been a very disappointing year.
Being nearly a lifelong film buff, I think it's been a very disappointing last two decades!

I'm going to do something different with the screen capture this time, I'm going to ask members of the group if they can identify this image? Not only the location, which I assume you should easily recognize, but the movie it's from and the actor in it.
The winner gets a FREE Planet of the Apes Blu-ray box set on me!
Just kidding of course, but you will get.... to call yourself a true film buff! How's that?

Yes, it is THUNDERHEAD, SON OF FLICKA, but you're still wrong about the location. I'm surprised -- and disappointed -- you can't see it, and I guess no one else can either -- unless there are very few online in the past day.
OK, to make this easier why don't you watch the scene yourself and see if you can guess the location.

| Subject: Rise of the Apes synopsis feedback |
.htmlHi everybody,
I just found some information on IMDB.com about Rise of the Apes, which I heard was tied into the original five films. The synopsis does not fit at all with the original films, even when viewed from the perspective of Caesar's actions in the 4th and 5th films altering the timeline and breaking the time loop.
Links to Info
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/news#ni2561086
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/
I'm eager to hear others' views on this information and hope those involved with the film see it. I hope I'm not double-posting this info, as I looked for it and didn't locate it.
---IMDB info begins
James Franco has been cast in Rise of the Apes (opening in theaters June 24, 2011) as a scientist in present-day San Francisco who is carrying out experiments on primates in the search for an Alzheimer's cure. A test subject called Caesar develops high intelligence and eventually leads an ape rebellion against mankind.
---IMDB info ends
In Jack Kirby's Kamandi series, there was a chemical which got into the water supply that led to various species of animals evolving and acquiring the power of speech. If the makers of this film want to give the Apes a boost, beyond Caesar's presence, to flesh out their rise to power and fill in the gap between Conquest and Battle, which I thought was when the upcoming film took place, they could include some scientific elements/"Great Disaster" radiation, etc.
The comic book publisher Mr. Comics explained the devastation brilliantly by showing man blowing up the planet in a desperate response to the events in Conquest and subsequent events in the miniseries.
When it is necessary for a filmmaker to tweak certain elements of a story with its roots in another medium in order for their film to work on the screen, it is understandable. It is a responsible and very creative group of film professionals that can adapt a source work and retain its integrity really well. It is a brilliant team which can make the source material even better, which I feel was done with the original five films. I hope that the upcoming film at least reaches the first plateau cited in this paragraph and does justice to the incredible films that spawned it. <.html

As mentioned, it's been a bad summer and year at
the box office. Partly that's the economy but there's no denying an indifference
to the movies that have been coming out. This week the heads of studios are
having confabs with talent agencies to see what they've got that might interest
audiences. It's often asked why they keep doing reboots, sequels, formula
comedies, etc. ("Doesn't Hollywood have any original ideas anymore?"). But
there's no denying people go to those. The best movies often don't get the
biggest audiences. It's a complex thing figuring out what audiences want. But
there MIGHT be a sea change coming in what movies get made.
I think it can be argued some of the best movies
ever made have been remakes, sequels, even "formulas", just as there's no
guarantee of quality just because it's an "original idea". It's more the movie
itself and the creativity and passion involved. Maybe one of the producers
of last year's surprise hit "The Hangover" said it best: "People are feeling
marketed to, as opposed to catered to".
This might seem not relevant as a POTA post, but
since they are scheduled to start shooting a new POTA movie in a couple weeks,
maybe it is. Perhaps this Hollywood soul searching will benefit "Rise of the
Apes". Or maybe it will be just another Hollywood soul searching that
doesn't add up to much.

I'm on tenterhooks.
Just watch as many
youtube vids as you can
on casting and molding
prosthetics. So it's like
second nature. You don't
want to stop too long in a place
you shouldn't. Mix slightly more
Ultracal than you need. The only
layer that should begin to cure before
you pour the next is the first one. Make
sure it's the consistance of a pancake batter.
not to thick or too thin. And beware of bubbles.
I would say probe inside the mouth with a stick or
straw, but you risk damage to the sculpt. Don't
worry too much if your dam leaks a little. Some
extra clean clay near by can be a real life saver!

You might consider a slight nose ridge.
It's not obvious in ever pic, but it does
strengthen a weaker area, especially
if you're not using the nylon backing.
I little trick used only for casting Zira.

You can't search what does not exist.
Hollywood makes most movies to do one of two things:
Make money, like any good company they cater to their perceived desires of
their customers and try and give them what they want. If Westerns make
money, we get Westerns. If Vampires and Werewolves make money we get
Vampires and Werewolves.
Second, they try and advance their political agenda, so we get Michael More
and Al Gore movies, if they make money or not.
We may be getting a POTA movie because someone in Hollywood things Sequels,
Prequels, Reboots, etc will make money. Marmaduke, The ATeam, Sex in the
City and all that.

Yes, if it's alright. Take your Plastic mask support from
Apemania, and if you haven't done so make a positive from
that by filling it with Ultracal 30. I wouldn't used foil.
Instead
use castor oil or Vaseline as a release agent if you can fine
something better. Some will just soak the entire thing in
a
5 gallon bucket. for my positive I took a wooden
sculpting
tool (once I'd finished the sculpt, of course) and using some
Ultracal 30 and cheesecloth molded it into the back of the
lifemask. This proved invaluable as a handle. I left
enough
of a hollow to get my fingers around the back of it so that I
could work it loose in a circular rotating motion. That and
a release agent for rubber masks help a lot as even my
crude edges are super thin. You can make some texture
pads by layering liquid latex on oranges, lemons and
grapefruit. It will help with the pores on the nose. I
would also cut the eyelids before the casting, again
putting on something to keep the plaster from sticking.
The will help keep the edges paper thin. But before
the first layer of plaster, if you're using clean clay,
smooth you deeper pores and wrinkles with a
soft brush in alcohol for a more natural look.
The hardest part for me was getting the
sculpt as good as I could since the
process of making the negative
will ruin it. The second hardest
part is getting a good cast that
will line up and not break when
used because the lips were too
close together for a sturdy mold.
This is especially important is the
foam ends up to hard or too soft
making removal more difficult. I
hope that helps & happy mold
casting! Send lots of pictures! : )

Agreed, they make movies to make money. But the
kinds of movies we get depends on what they think is commercial. If even the
studio execs think things are too dumbed down and is hurting business, we might
get some good movies for a change.
If the director of "Rise of the Apes" wants to do
something cool, and the studio says, "No, we'll lose the kids", the director can
say, "Ooooh, I didn't know you wanted another "Marmaduke" ". They'll go, "Ah!
OK, shoot it".
If the director of "Rise of the Apes" wants to
shoot an important scene and the studio says, "No, there's not enough action in
this scene", the director can say, "You mean "A" for action? Like "The
A-Team"?", and the studio will go, "Ah! OK, shoot it".
As for political agenda, at least we have
Fox News to keep things balanced. Plus they'll advertise "Rise of the
Apes". : )

Who created this map! I've never seen this before, but what a bunch of crap it is!
Are there actually people here who believe this is the area Cornelius' map shows? If so, can you please explain to me how the Statue of Liberty, which this map would indicate is inland, is on the ocean shore at the end of PLANET, and, this map would put the ruins of NYC right in the middle of everything.
Now just how in the hell did the apes live so close to the mutants -- for two thousand years!! -- and never discover them until the events of BENEATH? And don't tell me it's because NYC was in the Forbidden Zone -- which is the area right of the dotted line -- because it still places NYC right on the very edge of the boundery and it simply makes no sense that it would go undiscovered for two thousand years -- BUT THEN that's BENEATH -- a movie that makes no sense.

As for the teeth, I used denture repair kits.
A good way to do them is hot glue on a
nonstick surface. then insert each tooth
before it hardens. Just make sure you've
done a template to ensure a proper fit.
That way you can glue the uppers and
lowers in as a whole instead of indiviually.

Hi Jess,
Here's the best vids I could find on the mold process.
You can see how they make a clay dam to pour the molds.
Foam Latex seems to be taking a back seat to silicon lately.
But Burman has the kits. You can get them from the website,
but any good stage makeup and costume store should have it.
A good source for Ultracal 30 is pottery making stores or dental
supply stores if you don't want a big bag. Good Luck!

.htmlT, those videos on Youtube were great! I actually met Dan Morgan and Tom Rubalcava a few years ago. They kickstarted my dream into a reality and too bad their lifecast of my face didn't take. I must be a vampire. That's my explanation. Someday soon it will be to be able to make my own Zira foam latex, and that is just one crazy idea that never really entered my mind except through these apes groups. I mean, why not, right? Why can't anybody just go ahead and make their own ape foam latex? Oh yeah. Price. Oy.
Regarding the destruction of the sculpt when creating the negative mold...I was actually afraid of that, so that's why I decided to sculpt it with Super Sculpey and cure it. If I need to add the texture with latex stamps, no biggie--I can always add a thin layer of kleen klay in spots. I will need to sculpt in the edges to my positive, and those are no biggie anyway.
I did find a pottery place in my neighborhood that is listed as a distributor of Ultracal30. I called around this morning and came to a few dead ends, but after your post and Jeff B's idea about checking building supply shops I found someplace pretty close by. I am sure the pottery store will have the appropriate tools I can hook up to my drill so that I can mix the Ultracal30.
I found a place to buy foam latex kits online (a quart is only $22 right now). I'm so tempted to buy it but don't know if I should go order a gallon's worth or what...
I guess I need a gram scale. Any ideas on what will do for my needs?
I'm going to read up again on my special effects makeup and see if anything new will sink in.
Jess.

Why

latex?
I did. And yes, all it takes is money. Money and Time.
Oh, and patience. Money, Time and Patience. And skills. Skills
that usually come with practice. Which requires time. And an
oven...mixer, mixing bowls, lots of clay. The willingness to cook and
eat with ovens and bowls and mixers that have been used to make foam
rubber. Well, you can sort of see why everyone doesn't goo it. I
mean do it. Though I once used a colorant that breaks down foam
rubber. Bad idea! I spent a month cleaning that mold. But
I digress.
Before I knew there was going to be an Apemania, and I thought I had corner
the market on Ape appliances by paying Brian a ridiculous amount of money for
his rejects. There's a man who knows how to make lemonade from
lemons! And then drink it, and use that lemonade to piss all over
your parade, but I digress.
When he sent them to me, I too made life masks by supporting the vacform
face with a damp hand towel or something and filling it with ultra cal.
Except for Heston's. I should do that someday, but I digress.
Anyway... I, thinking these were originals, insisted they be
supported and protected to protect my "investment". They not only came
with vacuform faces under them, but those were encased in a sort of paper
chicken bucket thingy with no bottom, and wrapped in plastic. I
had bought a few bricks of green florist's clay for dam building. But
instead I rolled it out in a slab around the lifemask and drove the bottom of
the bottomless chicken bucket into it to make the form for the mold. This
worked a treat! You can also used posterboard or plastic. I
recommend getting some anyway. My gal's daughter uses it for painting and
playing with playdough on. You will want to protect your surfaces from
leaks of plaster, rubber, etc . . . Also, even if you don't invest in
spare mixing bowls, measuring spoons, baking sheets, etc.. Get yourself a good
resperator. $30 bucks at the local home improvement store will go a long
way. And you may want to bake while the kids are spending the day at
grandma & grandpa's house. Or if they're really nice use their oven
and leave the kids at home. Unless you're a real neat freak and
addicted to huffing ammonia fumes. If you're still not discouraged . . .
Atta Girl! Full Steam Ahead! Er uh . . . it's fumes not steam.
But I digress.
As for scales... You can either get a small mail scale sometimes used
for cooking as well, or the Internet is full of great deals on pocket digital
scales. Some that look like CD cases. Just the thing for the drug
dealer on the run. Or any jeweler's or reloader's supply store or
website. Anywhere they have to weigh in grains, grams or karats, troy
ozs. and the like. They even have scales that will convert between one and
another.
Your biggest enemy though is humidity. You'll want to fight it
at all costs. Rainy and or hot & humid days will have an effect, even
with the A/C on. So remember, it's like making a souffle . . . some
will fall. Oh, and best thing for cleaning a mold of that? Dental
tools. They work wonders. You'll discover solutions as you go
and road block present themselves. You might keep a log, to figure
why some batches are denser than others. I never did. Maybe over
baked or not long enough. Who knows? Just strive for
consistency.
Good Luck! ^.~

Not sure how that will work.
As far as release vs precise
molding. Depends on what
it's coated in and if it's flexible
or ridged. Something to ponder
on. I have, on occasion, forgot to
put Vaseline on the eyes, cheeks
and forehead. You might also pick
up a good hammer and chisel, as
Ultracal tends to dry really hard. More
like concrete than plaster. I never used
a drill to mix it. Just a rubber glove and my
in a bucket. Oh, and I wouldn't pour the left
overs down the drain. It tends to seize up the
garbage disposal. just let is dry in a paper or
plastic bowl and pitch it in the trash. Best way.

It will keep for over a year.
Often after a successful one
you will have no desire to do
it again for a year, maybe more.
It's a bit like pouring molten metal.
Timing is everything. Pour enough
so that when you join the positive
and negative molds there will be a
bit of overflow. Then pour the rest on
a paper or plastic plate. Then when
you push a finger or thumb into it and
it bounces back instead of leaving an
impression you'll know it's ready for the
oven. This is all from memory, so read
the directions, more than once. And maybe
laminate them for quick spill free reference.
A gallon might not be a bad idea. Depending
on your Kitchen & Lab Skills. You might have
a batch or two go wrong. Even the pros do.
That's how I got those rejects from Brian. ^.~

What can I say? I was raised in a house with my mom and two sisters. I never saw any of the Clint Eastwood movies until I was in college, and then I only saw a couple. I've been remedying that the past few weeks, with lots of great movies: the Dirty Harry movies, PALE RIDER, UNFORGIVEN, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, HANG 'EM HIGH, and GRAN TORINO. More on the horizon....

Plenty, but for some reason, it never has really extended to the Apes directors. Not sure why....

To no one's surprise, "Toy Story 3" opened at the

movie with good reviews, hard to do this year). The "Toy Story' characters are
some of the most popular around, beloved by million$. Now comes word that Woody
and the gang (ha! I said "Woody") will be in a "Toy Story" short film that will
play with Pixar's "Cars 2" next June. Yes, in fact the very "Cars 2" that will

What I mean is I saw a General Ursus Medicom figure that looked spectacular than another General Ursus Medicom figure that looked like crap, I think because of the paint job looking too dark. Am I going crazy or are some of the Medicom Apes figs different than others even though they are the same figure. Is there a screw up somewhere?? <.html

Rise of the Apes and seen a one sheet they had posted.Looks like a photo shop job to me from the Burton film, so I have no idea if it is official.
I posted the photo in the photo's section under "Rise of the Apes".
If this is the look they are going for, it is pretty lame in my opinion.
I do not care for it at all.
The Studio just does not get that the Original Look is The Planet Of The Apes no matter how many new versions they make. What is so hard about sticking with that. <.html

Hope you are all enjoying your Cornelius cards, please let me know if someone is missing something. I am very sorry they took so long to get in, but unfortunately overseas printers don't always have the fans/publishers best interests at heart - in the end they were printed domestically in the USA.
Also, those who ordered the complete package in early 2010 and waited until now to receive everything, I have thrown in a little special something - an as of yet unannounced print that we will be making available for sale in the next couple of weeks. What is the art for this print? Here is a hint: Jessica will be happy.
In regards to the title: this isn't the first time I have heard this query. Editor Rich Handley and myself went back and forth in a debate about this a while ago, and we came to the following conclusion: The book is about the conspiracy that defined the Planet of the Apes, not just a conspiracy that happens there.
I hope that clears things up.

When is this novel coming out? Seems like it's taking forever.

.htmlHey
It seems like forever to me and you both, Rory. Having been a fan that was frustrated waiting for a product to be released several times, I feel your pain. As the guy making the thing, I now understand where all the delays come form.
Aside from a few brutal personal crisis I have had to endure over the past two years, which interfered with my writing schedule - putting together a group of artists of the caliber of the ones working on this project was no small task - and in many cases, I have had to wait for them to find holes in their respective schedules in order to be a part of the project in the first place. Even now, not all of them have turned in their finished pieces yet - but the work in progress is fantastic!
On top of that, I have been (and still am) taking steps to make sure this book gets the widespread distribution it deserves, rather than it becoming a small footnote in the Apes saga hidden in the back of 1 in every 5 comic shops.
We are doing our best to make the release be this Holiday season (November), but may miss and have to shoot for Spring of 2011 (March)- but that's the latest we are looking at. I'm hoping the turn around on the second book will be much quicker, and have that one out within a year from Conspiracy's release.
The delays suck, there is no question of that. All I can do is work my hardest to make sure the book is worth the wait...
