"The Hollywood Reporter" says that John Lithgow
and Freida Pinto have signed on as humans for "Rise of the Apes". No word on Don
Cheadle, who was also a rumored potential (probably not for the Lithgow role).
Probably most people know who Lithgow is. He'll play the dad of James Franco's
character. The dad has Alzheimer's and that spurs Franco on to use chimps to
find a cure, leading to a classic "Oops!".
Freida Pinto is the female lead, a primatologist
(no word if she's also the love interest). Pinto is a model who's acting career
is heating up. But her only released film so far is the smash Oscar Best Picture
winner "Slumdog Millionaire":
If Cheadle signs too that will be quite a
cast. <.html <.html

Hey It seems like forever to me and you both, Rory. Having been a fan that was frustrated waiting for a product to be released several times, I feel your pain. As the guy making the thing, I now understand where all the delays come form.
Aside from a few brutal personal crisis I have had to endure over the past two years, which interfered with my writing schedule - putting together a group of artists of the caliber of the ones working on this project was no small task - and in many cases, I have had to wait for them to find holes in their respective schedules in order to be a part of the project in the first place. Even now, not all of them have turned in their finished pieces yet - but the work in progress is fantastic!
On top of that, I have been (and still am) taking steps to make sure this book gets the widespread distribution it deserves, rather than it becoming a small footnote in the Apes saga hidden in the back of 1 in every 5 comic shops.
We are doing our best to make the release be this Holiday season (November), but may miss and have to shoot for Spring of 2011 (March)- but that's the latest we are looking at. I'm hoping the turn around on the second book will be much quicker, and have that one out within a year from Conspiracy's release.
The delays suck, there is no question of that. All I can do is work my hardest to make sure the book is worth the wait... Drew

.htmlCool Jess. Thanks for all your help in promoting the possibility of the 'Bridge to Ape' city print. This will be our virtual San Diego Comic Con print this year, and go on sale in early July. It is actually bigger than the others, and on the same quality cardstock, but we are keeping the price the same.
Anyone who is interested already feel free to email me at thehitlist@... and I will put you on the preorder list (You are already on it, Jess).

Hey
You are welcome! The remaining cards will be released at New York Comic Con this October. BLAM! does not have a booth at San Diego this year, as I will be there promoting my new sci-fi comic series, Critical Millennium at the ARCHAIA ENTERTAINMENT booth.
Hope that clears everything up!

"Rise of the Apes" is scheduled to come out 1
year from today. Some might question whether the film will be ready by then,
specifically with the brave new POTA world of CG. Peter Jackson said it took
them a year and a half of development before they got one shot of King Kong they
liked (they also revamped him after seeing the movie trailer). But WETA does
have the "King Kong" experience to bring to "Apes", as well as 5 year's of
experience since then.
I think unless there's any unforeseen emergencies
that the movie will keep that date (unless they blink because of "Cars 2"). And
I'm sure WETA knows what time it needs and wouldn't have agreed to this time
table if they didn't think they could make it. They are the superstars of this
area and I'm sure watch their own backs. Peter Jackson personally wanted to make
a POTA film back in the '90's (the original is one of his favorites) and he was
Roddy's personal choice as director. I think Jackson will take a personal
interest in this project as far as the creation of the apes. This is quite a
credit. They know the knives will be out because people are so protective of
POTA as a makeup legend. Everybody is skeptical of CG apes, so WETA has some
proving to do.
But I don't think "Rise" will be the battle
royale people are expecting. It won't show the "conquest" I don't think. That
would probably be suicide to the CG artists. It's called "Rise of the Apes".
Probably 2/3rds (or more) of the flick will be Caesar's story with the humans.
Then the last act would be him getting his ape buddies together and saying,
"These humans suck. Let's take over". It could still be a good story, the
bittersweet tale of a guy who wanted to cure Alzheimer's but wound up opening
Pandora's Box (with apologies to "Avatar", don't sue me). The next movie (with
more time and money, if this is a hit) could be the "Conquest of the Apes".
Especially considering this is a new director with not a lot (any?) of FX
experience on this scale, I think they will go easy. But that's fine with me.
Most of the "Ape" films are not epic action movies, they are more intimate
sci-fi tales. If they can get the stories and the characters right, that's
enough for me. I don't need a whole lot of apes.

John Lithgow Joins Planet of the Apes Prequel, Rise of
the Apes
It was announced today that John Lithgow has joined the cast of the upcoming
Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes which is being directed by Rupert
Wyatt. He will co-star alongside James Franco and Freida Pinto.
John Lithgow will play James Francos father who is stricken with Alzheimers
which is the basis for the entire chimp uprising. In the film James Franco plays
a young scientist looking for a cure who inadvertently turns his apes into super
intelligent revolutionary apes. Freida Pinto who starred in Slumdog Millionaire
is the female lead playing a primatologist. Don Cheadle it is rumored is in
talks for a role but nothing confirmed yet.

I am expecting a little of the CONQUEST thing with this movie, but not until the climax. I see this thing as less a remake of CONQUEST, though, and more like something very loosely based on Chapter 34 of Boulle's book.

So, joejaffa says he hasn't read the current
script but he's read one from a couple months ago (for instance, he says the
female primatologist in the script played by Freida Pinto is named Stewart, but
recent reports in "Variety" and EW call the character Caroline). But his
comments give some good clues of what we can expect. But he says, "The draft I
read presented it as a smart science-fiction film. However, from what I've heard
Fox has "dumbed it down" quite a bit, so honestly I have no idea how it'll end
up. There's fighting to get it going both ways, so I have no idea how it'll end
up".
Here's his comments of the script he read (the
movie might be different, remember):
"It's not that dark, but it has dark moments. It's
very chilling. There isn't much action up until the 3rd act, then the action
gets intense".
he calls it "a new origin story to the original
timeline"; "a loose prequel"; "I'd say it's down the middle between a prequel to
the 1968 film and a reboot".
He says the primatologist (Pinto) and the
geneticist (James Franco) do become lovers (that'll keep the eyes off the CG
apes!)
The Lithgow father character is named
Charles
Spoiler: Caesar lives with Franco and a mean
neighbor mistreats Caesar, which leads to his anger at humans (the character
they wanted Don Cheadle for was a scientist, not this neighbor; how about Mickey
Rourke for the neighbor?)
"It's not a remake of "Conquest" at all. The only
thing that's the same as "Conquest" is that the name of the 1st chimp to talk is
Caesar, and that's it".
"There's one other intelligent ape in the script
who comes in later on, but he isn't as smart as Caesar and doesn't play as
prominent of a role".
"Caesar aquires the ability to speak. He doesn't
say much though. Don't want to give that much away here, as it would ruin a
great moment in the script". He says Caesar grows from a baby and gets smart
gradually. He's the only ape who wears clothes (somewhat). The apes revolt using
their "brute strength", not weapons.
He says it has nothing to do with POTA2001 and
that "if it's anything like the draft I read, it should be great".
So it sounds like it really will be primitive apes
(Primitive? They're prehistoric!) showing us who's boss. I'm open, as long as
the "don't dumb it down" side wins.

For me the interesting thing about John Lithgow
being in it (besides I like his work) is that he was in "2010" (the 1984 "2001"
sequel). I've always made a connection between the original POTA and "2001".
They came out about a month apart in 1968, put sci-fi on the map as a popular
genre that people talked about (not just kids' stuff) and had similar subjects
(evolution and the man/ape connection, realistic space travel, characters with
lobotomies). When the Burton movie was announced for 2001 I had to smile. When
it looked like this new movie was going to come out in 2010 I couldn't believe
it. Well, it's not coming out in 2010 but "2010" 's John Lithgow is filming a
POTA movie in the real 2010 so that's close enough.

Well, as long as it's a good film, I'll be happy. I have my doubts, but I'll go see it with an open mind. So far, the star power--Franco, Cheadle, Pinto and Lithgow--is impressive. (But, then, so was the star power for the Burton film.) The Alzheimer's angle doesn't entirely thrill me, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. <.html

Ed Gross, co-author of "POTA Revisited", has a
cool POTA that's worth visiting often. He managed to snag a few words from newly
cast actress Freida Pinto, who says she saw the original "Apes" "ages ago" but
reports the "Rise" script "really had a soul in the kind of story that they
really wanted to put out there. I just thought there was a lot of soul to it".
Pinto's first movie was the Best Picture winner
"Slumdog Millionaire" and she has a Woody Allen movie coming out this year ("You
Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger"), and plays the title character in an
independent movie for the Weinsteins. So she seems pretty selective. Good to
have her aboard.

Just got through watching BATTLE this morning on Blu-ray. (I've been doing my "Summer Ape-A-Thon" this week, watching a film-a-day.)
Watched the new featurette on the Blu-ray about the making of BATTLE and something caught my ear this time that I wouldn't have paid much attention to before: Eric Greene says at one point that Paul Dehn's original treatment for what would become BATTLE was titled "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." I checked with Greene's book and there's no mention of this, nor is there in any other book about the POTA film series. I can't recall ever reading this before. Anyone else?
If true, then "Rise of the Apes" is a title with some history.

Wow! I must have missed that as well on the bluray.
I had other domain names in mind at the time of choosing but in the end, "Rise" was the most logical.
Sounds like a good omen.

I saw a piece on Heston autographs and this so called expert was saying he did and pointed out a difference in his E's in Heston. Ive been collecting autographs for years, since I was 10 and I totally disagree. I feel Heston signed all his in the mail autographs. Unless someone can come up to me and say "I was his secretary and I did all his signing for him", from what Ive seen and believe me Ive seen alot of Heston autographs, old and recent, contracts, book signings, in the mail, personal letters...it's all him!!
Alot of these so called experts will state something like its fact and youll find out its merely their opinion. Ive had one UACC "expert" dealer tell me one of my Harrison Ford's was no good and I have a picture of Ford's freggin hand in mid signature on my photo! It seems like the 10 dollar one wasnt as good quality (much darker paint and sculpt) as the 40 dollar one, but theyre both Medicom Ursus figs!!. I just thought that was bizarre. I have the 12" Hasbro and Sideshow Apes figs (no astronauts or mutants) and Id love an Ursus Hot Toys fig but theyre between 150-200 bucks. Theyre worth it, but I really want to eat that week. I'll eventually get one though, if I dont soon, theyll be $500 one day!

I noticed that not only is Peter Jackson's Weta Digital
FX company doing "Rise of the Apes" but Andrew Lesnie is the director of
photography (cinematographer). He's photographed all of Jackson's films this
decade, including the "Lord of the Rings" (he won an Oscar for the first one)
and "King Kong". He's got a lot of experience working with Weta and merging
live-action with CG. Weta does FX for other filmmakers (including many Fox
sci-fi movies) but Lesnie isn't usually part of the bargain since he's been busy
with Jackson. Though he did do the Will Smith "I Am Legend" and this weekend's
"The Last Airbender". In the '90's he did the famed "Babe" pig movies. Probably
after "Apes" he will move on to the anticipated "Hobbit" movies if it's true
that Jackson is leaning toward directing them.
It still remains to be seen if these CG apes are
going to work but I can't knock who they've enlisted to do it. Director Rupert
Wyatt is certainly being thrown in the deep end of the pool, going from "The
Escapist" to this.

'Conquest of Planet of Apes' Opens
HOWARD THOMPSON.
Published: June 30, 1972
By all rights, the series squeezed from that grand sci-fi thriller, "Planet of the Apes," should he shedding hair all over the place by now. Number Four, "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes," arrived yesterday. It's not bad, as apes and 20th Century-Fox go, at least hand in hand.
There's the plot, with a talking chimpanzee befriended by a circus owner and finally leading a swarm of enslaved hairy-clad pals in revolt in a futuristic world of icy-veined humans. The series' writer, Paul Dehn, nimbly continues the story from the predecessor, weaving in just enough crisp philosophizing on both sides to command attention.
Furthermore, J. Lee Thompson's direction furiously propels the action in a compact chromium-and-glass settingand wait till you see that last battle royal. Don Murray, Hari Rhodes and Ricardo Montalban do well on the erring human side. But yesterday's audience at the New Embassy cheered the perservering apes and so did I. At 'em, boys!
Can an ape look foxy? Roddy McDowall, who steals the picture as their articulate leader, certainly does, with those piercing eyes blinking through a shaggy hide. Anyway, yesterday the apes conquered the planet. Now let's have a sequel called "Take It Back."
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, directed by J. Lee Thompson; screenplay by Paul Dehn; produced by Arthur P. Jacobs and presented by 20th Century-Fox. At the New Embassy Theater, Broadway and 46th Street, the Juliet 2 Theater, Third Avenue and 83d Street, and the Kips Bay Theater, Second Avenue and 31st street. Running time: 91 minutes. RISE OF THE APES What it'll be?
I'm betting this is a loose prequel to the original 1968 film. This is how it would work: the original APES series isn't a "timeloop" as most fans believe. There was an "original timeline" that created the world that Charlton Heston crashed landed in and that contained the intelligent chimpanzees, Cornelius and Zira. The apes went back in time in the third sequel, but in doing so they altered the original timeline and changed the future (the "infinite number of lanes" view of time the series talks about). As such, there's an original timeline (some two thousand years) in the "Planet of the Apes" universe that's completely unexplored in the original 5-film series, leaving 20th Century Fox free to reboot the series and go anywhere with it -- as long as it eventually leads to the world first viewed in the 1968 film -- or something close to it. "Rise of the Apes" will also answer one
of the most puzzling questions the original series NEVER touched upon -- just how did the apes evolve so quickly? That unanswered question is what makes the last three films in the original series now seem more than a little ridiculous. I only hope this new film has a truly intelligent script (which seems to be a very loose adaptation of Chapter 34 of Pierre Boulle's original novel), and I for one am looking forward to it.
If my bet is right and this is what the new film turns out to be, will it cause any here to go ape and zealously cling to your original APES series time loopiness, or will you except a new view of things?

Hard to see, but there was this large deer. The wife and I are in our
mid 50s and even for us it was an easy hike. We did not arrive until after
6:30 pm so we did not want to stay long. We walked the high fire road for
about 20 minutes in and then back out. I estimate we covered maybe a mile,
perhaps a bit more. The fire road was very wide and in excellent
repair. There were porta pottys and tables and such all along the
trail. We plan on a return trip when we can spend more time. Perhaps
overnight.

The wife and I actually went to Paradise Cove to visit the Rockford Files
site. We got a late start and since we drove about 90 miles up Highway 1
it took use almost three hours to get there. We had lunch at Paradise Cove
and then went up to Malibu Creek. We did not arrive there until after 6
pm.
Our original plan was to arrive at Mailbu Creek by 3 pm., but we did not
want to hurry. Since we were running late we changed our plan to a short
recon of Malibu Creek rather than a long visit. We did not get to any Apes
sites or the MASH sites. We liked the location very much and we do intend
to visit again.
The weather was good, a bit hazy but cool. We had a good time and
will probably plan on an overnight for our next trip. We took the freeway
back home which was not only shorter but much faster. We will probably
take the freeway to Malibu next time. This time we wanted the leisurely
drive portion.

.htmlNo- but I will treat it as a different animal- albiet a cool animal- much like the new Trek Movie which I thought evoked the old series and kept the feel <much as i LOVE TOS> while making it's own sopt in the pantheon without trashing a Classic as I felt Burton's half hearted effort did.
The Original POTA still holds water today- and beats the hell out of 99% of the movies released in the past 3 decades <or more>- and even then it stands proud. At least that's my opinion.

The Peter Jackson connection continues. Or more
specifically, the "King Kong" connection. "Rise of the Apes" has the same
digital FX company (Weta), the same cinematographer, and now the same performer
who played Kong (and "Lord of the Rings' " Gollum) will play Caesar. Andy
Serkis has been announced. It's perfect. The original Caesar worked in the
circus and now Serkis will work on Caesar. Ouch!
The only thing better is if Marky Mark does the
voice of Caesar. Cross your human appendages.

He's got a lot of experience working with Weta and merging live-action with CG. Weta does FX for other filmmakers (including many Fox sci-fi movies) but Lesnie isn't usually part of the bargain since he's been busy with Jackson. Though he did do the Will Smith "I Am Legend" and this weekend's "The Last Airbender". In the '90's he did the famed "Babe" pig movies. Probably after "Apes" he will move on to the anticipated "Hobbit" movies if it's true that Jackson is leaning toward directing them.

The cinematographer still does the same thing;
evoke a mood, design a color scheme, etc. CG probably makes the job even more
difficult. Like the actors he has to imagine what doesn't exist yet. CG is just
another tool.

Well, it's nice to know that the concept of a 'cinematographer' still exists
in CGI- world, although it's difficult to see what role that encompasses with
computer graphics. The more I read about this movie, the more it sounds like
Planet of the Humans, which is not what this particular chimp signed up
for.John, Scrolls.

| Subject: A few other questions and comments... |
.html.html
Hi my Apester friends...this is Zach. I haven't had a chance to post anything in quite some time, but I was wondering if anyone here could answer a few other comments I've had.
Planet
1. Wouldn't Taylor have known that he possibly was back on Earth when Zira mentioned about the "Hopkins Manual Dexterity Test" to Dr. Zaius? Hopkins is a very un-apelike name.
2. That river which flowed into the sea (we eventually found out it was the Atlantic Ocean)...it couldn't have once been the Hudson River, because it wasn't wide enough...I've wondered what it once was?
Beneath
3. Just how far apart was the crash of Skipper's ship and Dead Lake, where Taylor's sank? And how far were they from the ruins of New York City?
4. I've never understood how, after Taylor and Brent killed Ongaro, why Mendez and the other surviving leaders didn't even respond to his death...in fact, he was never mentioned afterwards. After all, he was an important member of the mutant council. And why didn't they put any other illusions in their minds to keep Taylor and Brent from the Cathedral?
Evolution's Nightmare
5. What in the world kind of a creature was that which jumped out at Joran and Solomon from the thicket? It appeared to have horse's hooves, but I never did quite figure out what kind of a mutated animal it was. And, for their dinner, weren't those mutated rabbits?
Mutations
6. I noticed that Jason from the Terror series captured and tamed a mutated horse...however, the horses that Brutus and his gang were riding appeared to be normal-looking horses. I'd wondered why was this? Shouldn't they all have resembled Jason's?
Return To Yesterday
7. Wouldn't the mutants who lived underground in NYC been able to put "visions" in the minds of Virdon, Burke and Galen, as well as the Ape Army? The superb Timeline that Mr. Handley has put together says that Mendez' followers mixed their bloodline with local mutants and it began to create telepathic powers...and this was centuries before the TV series! And by the way, which Mendez was in power during that time?
Mendez Dynasty
8. Could it have been entirely possible that there may have been a Mendez XXVII (the 27th) being groomed...but of course, the events of Beneath kept that from occurring? Suppose Mendez XXVI had had a baby son by Albina a year or two prior to Beneath.
Colonel George Taylor
What I'd like to see is a comic made where Taylor disappeared into that illusion, found himself in the underground ruins of NYC, and made his way to the Cathedral...heck, a whole story could be made here, as one was made for the events surrounding the captures of Landon and Dodge from the first movie, I've learned.
When you can, please drop me a line...it's always great to hear from a fellow fan of the movies. And have a great holiday weekend!
Zach

.htmlI actually think that the task of blending CGI with live action washes out the sharp edges on the live bits.Imagine the original trek across the desert in PotA with CGI skies and forest---it just would not be as sharp and real.I think our eyes actually struggle with the two depths/qualities of image, distracting from both.I want real make-up, real characters and actors---in other words, I want Planet of the Apes. This new movie sounds like an expanded Twilight Zone or X-Files.Sorry to be such a downer---I ache for a good Apes movie--but this new movie is missing the whole point of Apes----THE APES!!!! No, it's not like that. CG artists are seekers
too. But their dreams aren't like yours. They can't help thinking that somewhere
on the screen there has to be something better than reality. Has to
be!

In the original PLANET OF THE APES (1968) the whole point wasn't THE APES!!!! It was THE TAYLOR!!!! When he wasn't around, the concept kind of lost its point. How much better would the first sequel have been if Heston had wanted to do it and insisted on a larger budget and better script and director? Get the point?

P.S.
This new movie is supposed to take place in San Francisco. Think of it as "Dirty Harry Meets The Dirty Hairies."
