I agree with Rich. In the TV series, and animated series, they infer that the astronauts hit some sort of time warp that sent them into the future.

FOX has never officially called the film a prequel or sequel. Nor have they said if it is meant to be related to the 1968 film or 2001 remake. Guess they want to attract fans of both.

It is most likely a complete reboot that inhabits its own unique POTA universe just like the different versions of Superman, Sherlock Holmes, Battlestar Galactica, etc.

Well my opinion doesn't matter, I'm just a fan. But Paul Dehn's opinion is the one that counts since he was the Screenwriter and it was his story they were telling.

 Word is that David Oyelowo might join the cast of "Rise of the Apes" as Steve Jacobs, the corporate guy behind the ape medical testing. Obviously the character name is a nod to original "Apes" producer Arthur Jacobs. I'm cool with character names that tribute the folks that made the original films (there's reportedly an orangutan named after Maurice Evans) though I don't like characters named after other characters (Dodge, Stewart, etc.). Unless a license has been purchased from FOX, they own everything POTA related from works of fiction to works of art. Even the various websites like Hunter's or the group website, all the materials are owned by FOX and they could shut down the various websites and groups in a instant if they wanted to do so.
