Yeah, im just trying to think positive. So far the track record on sequels, reboots, reimaginings, regurgetations, whatever, have not been great, but I will hope for the best. Imagine if its really a very good film. John M. <.html

.html
Here's a lazy Labor Day Weekend project I just finished: Cornelius' map with locations from PLANET indicated -- as according to me. This is the best I can do to figuring it out. Some things don't make sense in the film. For instance, during the course of the film's final act it appears as if the escape party returns to the location of the hunt, but the distance from "Ape City" to that area is as far as it will take the party to travel to the ocean. Since earlier in the film Taylor indicates that it was "many days and nights" to trek from the location where the spaceship sank to the green area where he and his fellow astronauts were captured, then it would take many days to travel from Ape City to the hunt location, then many days more to travel from there to the cave. The film seemingly compresses all this time and therefore seems to shrink distances.
It's also always been my contention that since Taylor rides along the shore with the ocean on his right and then discovers the Statue of Liberty, he must be riding "up" the shore or actually North, which would imply that Cornelius' map is sideways and West is really North.
As with many aspects of PLANET OF THE APES, it's best to try and NOT make too much sense of it, and don't ask me to try to make Cornelius' map fit with events in BENEATH because I simply won't have anything to do with that -- the filmmakers there really mixed things up there.
Anyone who wants a higher resolution scan of what I've created can email me privately. Thanks to James for sending me a very nice reproduction of the map (done by whom?) a long time ago.

.htmlYeah. I wasn't even disappointed when Marky Mark was cast because he'd done some great movies ("Boogie Nights", "Basketball Diaries", "Three Kings"). At the time I thought that casting was "edgy". Too bad Burton hadn't already started casting Johnny Depp in every movie.
FYI: on the special edition of the "Boogie Nights" DVD there's a music video called "Try" with Philip Seymour Hoffman wearing a POTA T-shirt. Couldn't find it on youtube.

.html If they do it right the reason the apes evolve can be full of irony and pathos. Someone trying to find a cure for Alzheimer's instead unlocks Pandora's box. Trying to do good brings about the fall of Mankind. That can be much more powerful than the disease or evolution reasons. As with the nuclear war angle, we brought it on ourselves.

The idea of a disease contributing to the evolution of the apes can spark the imagination. Many questions can be raised like why would the disease affect the intelligence of primates yet kill off domestic pets. Would monkeys and humans also have increased intelligence etc? There is a potential for quite a few stories here. Elaine <.html

If they do it right the reason the apes evolve can be full of irony and pathos. Someone trying to find a cure for Alzheimer's instead unlocks Pandora's box. Trying to do good brings about the fall of Mankind.
Wasn't irony what Boulle specialized in?

Reportedly there's a new box set of Stanley Kubrick movies being worked on, including a new edition of "2001". Here's a preview at FX legend Douglas Trumbull's website of a new documentary he's doing about the movie, "2001: Beyond the Infinite". Well, I consider the current Blu-ray for 2001 better and much more satisfying than the one for PLANET OF THE APES. It's actually my favorite Blu-ray. I just wish Fox Home Entertainment would give PLANET the 2001 treatment.
I already have several Kubrick films on Blu-ray, so I'm not too thrilled with the prospect of buying them again, but that documentary on 2001 they're working on looks fantastic and will be a must have.

I don't see the composer getting announced until next February at the earliest. By that time a rough cut should be ready with 75% of the CGI work done -- hopefully. I said before I wouldn't be surprised if the release date gets pushed back. Fox can't afford a flop with this, it'll have to look as good as possible.

| Subject: UK Apes DVDs Questions |
.htmlI have just recently discovered Planet Of The Apes! (I was born in 100,000BC but fell into the ice, I was only just thawed out earlier this year)
My wife had seen the first film on Tv many years ago and so thought I would like it so got me the complete set for my birthday. This one here:
http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/95339...t/Product.html"
I have now watched all the fims and loved them, but the first was particularly good. I have since watched the Tim Burton remake but didn't like it as much. Next I will try the TV series, being a completist
I have also recently purchsed this:
http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/15341...n/Product.html"
for £1.50 on ebay as it had a DTS soundtrack and two audio commentaries. The commentaries were very poor though, we Who fans are spoiled with the commentaries on our DVDs.
Anyway, I figured the Apes fans on here would know what's what with my DVDs. I have heard that some of the later movies were edited and that other versions with alternative endings exist. What versions do I have on my DVDs and which DVDs contain the alternate versions (Which some fans seem to really rate)? Can someone give me a breakdown of what I have and what to look out for?
Also, what's the quality of the prints and sound on the Blu-Rays? Play.com have all the movies on Blu-Ray but for £60!, don't think I will be getting that but might be tempted to have a look at the Blu-Ray of the first movie as I loved it so much. <.html

.htmlWelcome to the group Andrew. I'm really not sure about the UK releases but in the US an extended version of Battle was released on DVD in 2006. In 2008 the entire series was released on Blu-Ray. The extended version of Battle was included along with the theatrical version. Plus an alternate version of Conquest was included along with the theatrical version of that film.
As far as the UK releases, hopefully one of our members there might be able to answer your questions better than I can.

.htmlEd Gross caught with the 2011 edition Dodge and took him for a test drive (this Dodge doesn't run a soil test but he will soil the screen with his wickedness). Felton is best known as the kid from "Harry Potter" you want to put over your knee and teach some manners. Hopefully Caesar will put him over his knee. To hear Felton tell it, "Rise of the Apes" is all good. For starters, he is a "huge fan of the franchise". He also calls the "Rise" script "one of the best things I've ever read, if not the best" (take that, Harry Potties!). But he seems to know the originals pretty well and he didn't say it was a direct prequel to them as some have suggested. Instead, "It's something completely new".
He also has great praise for the director, Rupert Wyatt, who really is getting thrown in the deep end of the pool having not done a previous big FX film. Felton calls him, "absolutely genius", and says "some of the stuff he has captured and I have seen is beautiful, it looks so cinematic as well as staying true to the story". He says, "Andy Serkis (Caesar) has been here from the start, and he sings Rupert's praises from the rooftops, and the fact is that he's been here every single minute of it, almost, and he's extremely excited". Sounds like there's going to be a lot of Caesar in the film.

These kind of things need to be taken with a grain of salt. No one says ANYTHING negative about the film they're currently working on, and everyone you're working with is "brilliant" and a "genius." You want to keep working? You better say those things.

Subject: [pota] Tom Felton talks "Rise of the Apes"
Ed Gross caught with the 2011 edition Dodge and took him for a test drive (this Dodge doesn't run a soil test but he will soil the screen with his wickedness).
Sounds like there's going to be a lot of Caesar in the film.

dear group, i did some diging and found a photo from twilight zone episode dated 3-25-1960 called people are alike all over--it starred roddy mcdowall and susan oliver.
The first season of TZ is now on Blu-ray and that episode is on it. Supposedly a great blu-ray, but I'm in no mood to buy it.

No, he had nothing to do with POTA, but he once worked with Franklin J. Schaffner (maybe more in live '50s TV?) and he was the star of one of my other all-time favorite SF films, the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.
Kevin McCarthy passed away over the weekend at the age of 96.

So it looks like they finished on schedule after about 2 1/2 months of shooting. I guess they didn't have any green screen mixups or a delay in shipping the green body suits. : )

Agree! The charme or coolness of the originals was that they did not look like todays apes, and should not. Evolution, nuclear fallout, disease, whatever changed the apes apperance and that is what in my view made them unique....Burtons film made them look to authentic and that was a distraction. If apes are going to change mentally shouldnt they also change physically?..Whatever..John M. <.html
