.htmlHowdy, folks. The Holy Grail of Planet of the Apes lore has been unearthed--the script to the licensed 1970s U.K. live stage-show production of Planet of the Apes, written by Mike McCarthy.
McCarthy was generous enough to provide me not only with a complete copy of the script, but also other goodies to go with it, including a synopsis of an Apes-based arena show that ran around the same time, an ape-mask theater program handed out to audience members, news clippings, a poster from the show and other fun stuff. All of this has now been uploaded here:
http://www.hassleinbooks.com/liveshow2.html"
Neil Moxham graciously granted permission to mine the images at his Wikia page article about the show, so that I could flesh out the script a bit. (What McCarthy provided was only enough to illustrate about half the script, so I wanted to punch up the rest a bit.) The captions for the images indicate what was provided by McCarthy and what came from the Wikia page.
Enjoy!

.htmlSadly, Mike McCarthy has no audio or video. He says producer Michael A. Caulfield might have both, but he lost touch with him years ago and has been unable to find him. (I've tried as well, but to no avail.)

I'll give you guys a hint: It's name is Paula Dupree (I'm not joking), and it is a she, and she's not a werewolf, but an ape woman! No, it's not Jessica.
She was the "star" of this film and its two sequels.

Look here, I've found an old black and white pic on the web of an early Jessica make-up experiment. Wow!
No seriously, can anyone here identify this photo?
Jessica?
Great recent sculpts, Jessica. Sideshow should have had you working for them on their POTA line. Wish you could do every main character and reproduce and sell them as "replacement heads."

That makeup was done by Jack Pierce, famous for Frankenstein, The Mummy and, of course, The Wolfman. I think that hair was a lot cheaper back then, though the war did interfere. It was usually real human hair, usually from Asians because it is thicker, though the Wolfman's hair was from yaks!
Interesting thing about this CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN makeup design is that it's basically what Rick Baker came up with for the 2001 debacle, though I'm sure the foam rubber Pierce used was much too stiff to allow any facial expressions like that in POTA.

.html Yeah, Fox is being very low key with this, and coupled with the economy (and the poor showing for POTA2001 stuff) I don't expect much coming out. The apes are just going to be apes without clothes or guns or anything. But if they put out a life-size Freida Pinto action figure I'll get it.

.htmlRun! The hills are alive!! No, it's the 45th anniversary of the "Sound of Music" and Fox is going whole hog in a way they never did for POTA. Re-release in theaters. Oprah! Wouldn't you kill for a POTA Oprah show?
"Sound of Music" was very influential on POTA for both good and bad. It was an absolute smash and put Richard Zanuck, the exec who said "Yes" to POTA, not "Nooooo!" (well, he said that too, but eventually he said yes), on the map at Fox. But it also inspired Fox to sink a fortune into musical flops that almost killed the studio and DID kill the budgets for the POTA sequels.
So happy birthday, SOM. It wouldn't have been the same without you.
P.S. I finally saw the Fox 75th anniversary logo on "Wall Street 2". Hopefully it will stick around long enough to be included on "Rise of the Apes".

Bummer about my Virdon. My girlfriend saw it and she says it looks nothing like Virdon, so back to the drawingboard on that sculpt. I may be able to sculpt a better one now that I have more solid looking sculpts.

If anybody's interested, a cast of Julius is available unpainted $30 in US, $35 elsewhere. Don't have time to paint, but gorillas are supposed to be easy to paint.
Cast of Dr. Horious is also available.
