But he also plays characters using his own skin and one of those is the new film from John Landis. Landis himself was in a POTA movie for a millisecond, playing Jake's Friend in "Battle". Even cooler, he directed "Apes" makeup legend John Chambers in his only screen role in "Schlock!".
So now Landis is teaming up with the new breed of ape as Andy Serkis co-stars in "Buck & Hare". Here's the trailer (Andy is the one who doesn't look like Scotty from the new "Star Trek"):

Fun Fact # 1: The stars of two different POTA redos share a movie together. Marky Mark and James Franco are both in "Date Night". No, I swear!
Fun Fact # 2: In "Date Night", Franco plays a guy named Thomas "Taste" Felton; Tom Felton the actor plays Dodge in "Rise of the Apes". Would I make this stuff up?
Will future generations of POTA fans make a pilgrimage to that movie? They could make a worse choice. It's pretty funny if you like the Steve Carell-type humor. Just sayin'.

I have a mannaila envelope from New Yorks Foxs publicity dept. from 1972 with a Conquest stamp from a Jerry Anderson who ran it back then. My father called up saying I was a big fan and he sent me 19 Black and white glossy photos.
Its 11X12 with a stick on Fox label on the left and on the right a stick on machine generated stamp with date and cancellation time and date. A really unique item. I was once offered one hundred bucks for it in the 90s. My first collectible. It all started then, my collecting frenzy....John M. <.html

I just finished reading Planet of the Apes Revisited by Joe Russo
and Larry Landsman with Edward Gross published by Thomas Dunne Books,
2001.
It is a behind the scenes look at the Planet of the Apes movies, TV show
and cartoon. The largest section is about the original movie and it
continues right up to just before the release of the POTA movie that shall not
be named.
The book describes many of the different aspects of making a movie and
explains why much of the end result was what it was. The personalities,
the political agendas, and the costs as well as the expected returns on
investment that drove the movies and other products.
I picked it up at Larry Edmonds Bookshop, Hollywood, CA
larryedmonds.com
It cost me $8.95 plus tax. I got it when my wife and I went to see
POTA at the Eqyptian.

I've just had in Ape Chronicles 47-50 and they are a delight. There's stuff in there I've never seen---an excerpt from 'The Abilene Reporter' for example! William Burge's newspaper collection is just a service to apedom---much, much appreciated. There's an interview by Jeff with Eric that I'd have killed to run in Scrolls and features with/on Rich Handley,Bill Blake, an Apemania party with just a stunning Ursus cake.Terry has now managed 50 issues.FIFTY!!! Many of them during the lean years when not many cared---he kept the flame glowing. His fanzine is like going back to the well of childhood enthusiasm, taking a good drink, and feeling renewed in your love of Apes.Ape Chronicles deserves all our support and I can't recommend it highly enough.Well done Terry and all involved--you're doing Apedom a tremendous service and long may you continue.Roll on the next fifty issues! If you don't have a copy already look out for 'The Legend of The Planet of the Apes: Or How Hollywood Turned Darwin Upside Down by Brian Pendreigh (Paperback - 21 Sep 2001).
It has little to say about the sequels but it is, in my opinion, just as enjoyable.

I will when I get the energy. I had foot and back operations, uhgg. I had the Cinemafantastique issue with apes and by the time I was going to scan it with the help of my son Nicky I was late in that you guys got it. My ape stuff if packed away in a closet that is covered by my home theater/audio system so I get alittle apprehensive when someone wants to see something. Even the Heritage group auction guys were interested and I was lazy, but they offered less than I expected(they have to make money too). They wanted mostly the original Planet of the Apes more than the sequels. I told them about the Conquest manilla envelope and stamp and were interested but I said aragantly that all the Apes stuff should be sold as a package and hense alot more money. My Collection was valued at about 40-50 thoasand dollars and I would only take about 30 at the least. Well they and I ended our correspondance but they will get in touch if they find a buyer for it all. I did not want to
piece meal it.
I got off the subject here. I will get to sending the scan when I get around it and feel better. I always wondered what happened to Jerry Anderson, the great guy at Fox who sent me the glossys, because the following year with Battle of the apes he was moved or fired and I always felt I had a part in it because he was so nice to me, an Apes fan, and it wasnt policy to send publicity material to fans. I was told to go to Movie Star News at 14st in NY, New York when a new relationship with the Claws evolved and by 1975 all the good and original Apes stuff was gone or sold.
Anyway its been a while since I posted so I made it a big one..Take care and Ill get a scan out when I can...John M. <.html

I've been to Malibu State Park with a tour by Bill Blake, who knows more about it than any park ranger, and with Adami wearing ape makeup applied by Bill, so it doesn't sound interesting. And I've had POTA screenings coming out of my ears. Though seeing it at Fox would be interesting (and it's certainly a good cause). Maybe. Too bad we can't switch bodies (I've been working out).
On Oct. 21st I'm going to the Motion Picture Academy (the Oscar people) to see a presentation of movie monster history. They show clips from various movies (including POTA) and then the people who worked on them talk about how the monsters were created. They go from "King Kong" (stop motion) to "King Kong" (CG) and everything in between.
About a month ago I went to the Academy for a similar thing about the physics of sci-fi movies (also featuring POTA, which got a better score for realism than most of them). After the Oct. 21st show I'll post about them both.

It's been a long time coming but the "Lord of the Rings" prequel "The Hobbit" has officially been greenlit and will start production in February (maybe?). Many LOTR folks have been working on "Rise of the Apes" including director of photography Andrew Lesnie, creature actor Andy Serkis and the WETA FX shop (I'm still holding out hope that LOTR composer Howard Shore will be added to the list). LOTR and now "The Hobbit" director Peter Jackson is a POTA fan and spent many years trying to do the redo that eventually went to Tim Burton. Jackson was Roddy McDowall's personal choice to pick up the story and was enlisted to don the makeup again. I still have the feeling that Jackson had something to do with all those talents winding up on the new "Apes" and that the delays on "The Hobbit" facilitated it. Of course, all those people have worked for others but that combination has only
previously come together on Jackson's films (including "King Kong", the most obvious comparison).
Anyway, I dig the "Lord of the Rings" movies and now I have another prequel to look forward to besides "Apes".

I saw the Zeigfeld showing in '08 too and it definitely was film, not video. It was very grainy because it was a dupe print and I thought a pretty bad one. The element used had to date from the early '90s at least, as it had artifacts I hadn't seen since VHS and Laserdisc transfers.
I think the Blu-ray transfer is pretty close to the original camera negative, but that Fox hasn't done such a great job in their preservation of these elements. I recall reading that a couple reels of PLANET's camera negs were missing when a 35mm film preservation restoration was done around six or more years ago, and those reels had to be restored using black and white YCM protection negs. These scenes were the later Forbidden Zone trek to the cave, and indeed the color at the gorge does look different than any other transfer there's been of PLANET.
I'd like to see Fox re-do the Blu-ray, but any improvements would have to be in the digital domain at this point.

.htmlThanks for clearing that up. The grain machine I saw was not my imagination so what the heck was that. I assumed that it was for video projection so they can add the illusion of film and supply grain. Its done as you know on alot of hi-def camera productions.
The restoration, and I use that word sparingly, was done for the Smithsonian I guess. I know memmory can be very deceitfull but POTA68 does not look the way it did years ago and these prints are lame in my opinion and so goes the audio. Is it that we are just nuts or are the Apes films especially treated badly. The only proof I have are audio recordings I made hard wired from a drive in speaker and the television premiers hard wired from an all tube magnavox that sounded wonderfull
Digital restoration is the only way now thats for sure but they still dont get the right people to do it, just like how audio producers and engineer cant make a decent CD because of loudness brickwalling. I always start ranting about this because years ago (like youself and a couple of others here though some here were actual consultants on transfers and did that matter after all that was said and done) I was a complainer and a person that wrote and called Fox and had letters and small diatribes printed in the Perfect Vision and Wide Screen Review and some other Film Quarterly's and got really nowhere in my view.
They should go back to the YCM tags if they can. Im very suspicious about Fox because of my experience with Mr. Bart P. and Lewis L. and others who fought with me telling me im wrong and the sky aint blue. I almost went to Fox in L.A. with my old audio and photos but it would of been on my dime so I said goodby cheap F%%##! and that was it. We were getting sick of each other ,they basically saying im wrong and or dreaming. I was vinticated later on with some of the Soundtrack releases though, and the fact that a Spanish film transfer had to be used for Beneaths sound problems since the Playhouse elements days. They dont like being told they are wrong and definetly cant take us pushy New Yorkers. Take care, man this pushes my buttons, John M.

I didn't see that PLANET/BENEATH "Two Apes For The Price Of One" double feature until October 1971. I recall the print to PLANET looking OK, but when I went to the "Go Ape!" reissues in 1974, the print of PLANET was in terrible shape. That was in Florida, the PLANET/BENEATH reissue I saw was in Watertown, NY at a theatre, the Olympic, that's now gone, but I found a picture on the web of the theatre just a few years before it was demolished. This photo is from 1981, but ten years earlier I stood in front of that theatre looking at posters from PLANET and BENEATH. I also remember going to that theatre in early July of 1970 to see THE BOATNIKS -- of all things! -- and there was the BENEATH banner in the lobby. It hadn't opened yet.

.htmlI never knew about the Planet/Beneath double feature because it didn't play in NYC.
The first time I saw the poster was in 1974 during the Go Ape! festival. My local theater, the Walker, displayed the Go Ape! one sheets outside but in their lobby they had the one sheets for the films. They had the one sheets for Escape, Conquest and Battle which I had seen many times before. But for Planet and Beneath, they had the double feature poster which I had never seen before.
They only had spaces for 4 posters in the lobby so I assumed that that was why they were using the double feature poster. I was disappointed because at that time I had never seen the one sheet for Planet.
For some reason that year school didn't get out until very late so I had to wait to go to the Go Ape! festival, but every day that week on my way home from school I would take a little diversion and stop by the theater to look at the posters in the lobby. The lobby was thick with the smell of popcorn, so to this day whenever I smell popcorn; I think of POTA.
Scans of all the one sheets, including the double feature and Go Ape! one sheets, are available in the One Sheets section of the Group Website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/OneSheets.htm and the mirror site: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/OneSheets.htm.

.htmlIn the past, actors who played apes in the POTA franchise were buried under makeup . . . but not forgotten. Talents like Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Mark Lenard and many others came through the makeup and created characters, not costumes. With the dicey new prospect of apes created by computer, some may worry those days are behind us. I can't vouch for what the final result will be but at least I can say there have been real actors cast as the apes. The facial technology of today's CG does let the actor come through. That's most obvious in something like "Avatar" where you can see an actor like Sam Worthington or Sigourney Weaver as their human characters and then as their CG counterpart "avatars".
So, based on my reading of the script and the list on imdb, let me present the ape cast of "Rise of the Apes":
Andy Serkis (Caesar) - The "star" of the simian cast, he's famously brought Peter Jackson characters like Gollum and King Kong mid-way to life. His career is a history of this kind of thing. Of course, Caesar needs no introduction.

Terry Notary (Alpha/Bright Eyes) - Notary is perhaps the top movement coach in the biz. If you've seen the "Ape Camp" doc on the POTA2001 DVD that's him putting the actors through their paces. He plays both Caesar's mother and (doomed) father. He also does the misc. background apes (that was him in San Francisco in those recent pictures of filming).

Richard Ridings (Buck) - This is the star gorilla, kind of the Aldo as he was originally envisioned for "Conquest". Described in the script as Caesar's "lieutenant". Presumably he is named after Buck Kartalian (Julius in the original POTA), a great idea.

Christopher Gordon (Koba) - Koba is the bully chimp who gets in Caesar's face. Just a punk!

Karin Konoval (Maurice) - One of Caesar's buds, presumably an orangutan named after the great Maurice Evans

Cornelia: There was a chimpette in the script that Caesar had the hots for, perhaps a kind of Lisa, but the role hasn't turned up on the cast list.
Apes and actors, take a bow! <.html
