Good luck with this one, Bill. Sounds like it could be fun. Oh, a special request from Rich Handley.. he says is there any chance you can re-write the lines for the Slave girl character and have her repeatedly say "Buh-hoy-a! Buh-hoy-a! Buh-hoy-a!"

This is a segment of "The Fabulous Picture Show"
from 4/19/08 that happens to show Rupert Wyatt talking about his first film "The
Escapist" (with generous clips) and Andy Serkis talking about acting the CG
characters Gollum and King Kong. Two years later Wyatt and Serkis would be
brought together as, respectively, the director and Caesar for "Rise of the
Apes".

Or as Ian Dury would say, "I'm Spasticus Autisticus!
There's a funny story attached to that actually. They
were having Year-Of-The-Handicapable, or something
like that in Britain, and asked Ian to write something
for it. So he wrote Spasticus Autisticus, and it was
banned! Seems they didn't realize that he himself
was handicapped when they asked him to write
a song, and they thought he was making fun of
them. It's kind of like the government spending
a fortune of our money subsidizing the dairy
industry, etc . . . and then millions more
telling us not to eat so much cheese.

.htmlThe apes aren't the only ones "rising". The revealed title for the anticipated next Batman film is "The Dark Knight Rises". So POTA beat Bats to the punch, though Fox has officially said that "Rise of the Apes" is only a "tentative" title (until they call it "POTA Rises"). While we're at it, other Batman tidbits are that the director says the villain won't be the speculated Riddler (or a recast Joker). Word is there are two central female roles (maybe Catwoman?). And definitely no 3D (but the director's love of filming in IMAX will continue). I'll admit I love the new "Batman" flicks and it's great that Christopher Nolan has shown you don't have to water down the darkness of a franchise to get a big audience.
Probably the new "Batman" flicks can be credited as much as anything for the "rise" of prequel mania. Why not? Just "start over" and make $ 1 billion on # 2. Batman and POTA share a certain history. The "Batman" TV show was another pop sensation in the late '60's and had plenty of POTA guest stars including Linda Harrison and Roddy. Of course, Tim Burton got his hands on both. We'll see if POTA can be resurrected post-Burton as well as Mr. Wayne has.

So Burton's movie is millions of times more POTA-ish than this upcoming "POTA" movie, and that unbalances my mental sanity a lot.

I'd say that would make IT the new "Conquest", while "Rise" is more like "Escape". Apes don't land from the future, but it's about one ape (Caesar) interacting with the humans. Amanda Silver, the writer, said there's a lot of heart, and I think that description fits "Escape". >SPOILER< And the film literally climaxes with an escape, not a conquest. Like "Escape", the movie will be more intimate and show how things get started. And it happens that 2011 is the 40th anniversary of "Escape", so it all fits.

How will people know it's POTA? Fox will tell them.

I just hope ROTA will be a masterpiece. Like everyone else!
And no matter how much CGI is involved, I want HUMANOID apes. "Humanoid" is the successful key.

.htmlIt would definitely be cool to get a Blu-ray of the TV series. We also need to get any cut scenes or bloopers that might be in the vaults, the aged Galen clips, the Sci-Fi Channel bumpers and other goodies. They could even include a PDF of the hardcover comic annuals.

By the way, it was shot on 35mm Eastman Color negative film, in the Academy ratio (1.37:1).

Who knows what Fox will do if RISE is a hit, but the idea of the TV show on Blu-ray doesn't excite me, as the show bores me to no end. I only look at it for reference, as entertainment... it was barely entertaining in 1974! And chances are that Fox wouldn't put the money into a true HD remastering of the show, with all the digital clean-up that would be needed. They'd probably just upscale what they already have.

*** The time from which Zira/Cornelius/Milo came from was the original
timeline and always will be... There's nothing "alternative" about it... The
"new" one started by their arrival is the "altered/alternative" universe. ***

*** Joking about what? There's nothing to joke about when there's no proof
anywhere (scripted, novelized, or otherwise) that Armando called him
"Saloman"... You have no proof of this "civilian name" theory, and to expect that
everyone is going to consider your theory as canon is a "joke" if you ask
me... A lot of people have their own "pet theories" about a lot of this APES
stuff, but they don't consider people to consider it gospel, especially when
there's nothing even close to "evidence" to call it canonical... Why should
your theory be held up as "the word"? You can argue it all you want, but
it's still just a theory...

reasoning he suggested the name in the book and record adaptation: "In
consideration of the worlds you must conquer: 'Caesar'." The tone in which it's
said in that adaptation doesn't make it sound like Armando is implying that
baby Caesar "will" take over the world, but that he'd have to "conquer"
obstacles he'd be facing in his life, like the fact that Hasslein would want
him dead, the fear and prejudice he'd be faced with because of what he is,
etc. (and who knows, maybe he did indirectly imply world dominance...) But
nowhere is it ever implied that he said "We'll call you Salomon, but my pet name

events that followed that... By Dehn's words, he states that since they thought
it (CONQUEST) would be the last one he set it up that so it'd tie in with
"Apes 1"... But that was at the time of CONQUEST, and even if it does "come
full circle" as in apes revolted, took over and rule(d) over humans, it doesn't
mean that the ending of CONQUEST would lead up to the same exact future as
seen in PLANET... After all, the car in lane A) may crash while the car in
lane B) travels on: PLANET/BENEATH, in lane "a", did "crash", but
CONQUEST/BATTLE in lane "b" may in fact survive by actions ("lane switches") taken by
the apes and humans... It may have been a "circle" as far as apes taking
over, but there's no proof that actions taken didn't change the outcome and it
may not be the same as seen in BENEATH... ***

Why anyone would "love/like" the "cheap make-up" is beyond me... The TV

dislike is usually due to the content of the series, not it's "look", though
that plays into it for some people... I think saying "I love how cheap it

horrible and unrealistc it looks now, or people watching STAR TREK and saying
"Oh, look you can see the zipper on his outfit" or things like that... In other
words, they're not watching it for content but so they can sit back and
knock it without putting things in perspective... ***

As far as including things like the aged Galen clips or the Sci-Fi channel bumpers, etc.; those were all produced by other companies. FOX would have to pay those companies for the right to include the clips they produced, if the master tapes even still exist after decades, and I don't get the impression that is something FOX would be willing to do.

I agree that Caesar in a sense was from another time, being the child of Cornelius and Zira. That was "Conquest" 's short cut. But I think "Conquest" dropped the ball on showing how the apes became intelligent and more human-like and "Rise of the Apes" has a chance to improve on that score (yes, thanks to CG). "Rise" can do something different and introduce POTA to one of the most enduring themes of science fiction, the mad scientist.

"Salomon" is pure conjecture obtained by obvious deduction: Armando could have declared that they got Salome's sex totally wrong, it's a MALE chimp, not a female like previously thought.
"Caesar" --- CANON: Armando called him that way privately.
It's like Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman. That's why I Love Caesar so much!

The idea is to build on it with sequels. It doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the originals as long as it's a good story well told. That would make it more POTA-ish than Burton's.
How will people know it's POTA? Fox will tell them.
Yeah, I'm sure the term "Planet of the Apes" will be prominent in all the advertising and trailers. Nearly everybody knows it. Why wouldn't Fox let everyone know of the connection, this is a prequel to a classic Fox film, isn't it?
Everybody just relax and wait till June.

.htmlMy suggestion would be for FOX to do a combo blu-ray of both the live action series and the animated one. It could be marketed as PLANET OF THE APES TV COLLECTION containing both the live and animated series'.
WIth the entire animated series fitting on one Blu-ray it would make a nice package.
Simple bonus materials done is no or little effort could be:
Isolated scores for both series'.
Audio Commentaries with Ron Harper and or James Naughton.
I don't see FOX going out of their way to do re-mixes in 5.1 even if the separate audio elements are available. Or going through the trouble of tracking down various guest stars of the the live action series for interviews or participation in commentaries.
I don't know if original artwork exists from the animated series (I have a few pencil sketches from Doug Wildy)
As nice as it would be, I doubt FOX will have the foresight in doing any of this.

Well, they haven't "reformatted" (meaning crop the original 1.33:1 frame to 16X9) on shows like the original "Star Trek" or "The Prisoner" on Blu-ray, and I don't think Fox would do it to the APES TV series, but they are doing it to old TV shows and sitcoms (I've watched an HD conversion of "Cheers" on HD-NET), and I've read that's what's going to be done to all the modern "Star Trek" shows.

I don't believe it's "canon" that the original APES film series is a timeloop. Anything that Dehn wrote or said outside the scripts (as shot) doesn't pertain to the series itself.
BATTLE, either with the theatrical version or the extended version, makes it ambiguous as to what the future holds.

There might be a Blu-ray reissue of PLANET just prior to the release of RISE, with a trailer for RISE at the beginning of the disc, much like what Fox did with THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, but perhaps there won't be.

Well, they don't lope off the tops of people's heads. Each frame has to be carefully "re-compositioned." I'll get some screen captures from the TV series and try this and do before and after comparisons.
