YOU have the film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's
POTA on blu-ray. There's only one other film adaptation of a Boulle novel in the
whole wide world. A week from tomorrow it hits blu-ray. It's your move.

The film got high ratings and confirmed that the high ratings for Planet aired over a month earlier were not a fluke. This was important because it led to the creation of the POTA TV series the next year. <.html

It never occurred to me that Forry may have have POTA artifacts in his
Ackermansion, although that would make sense. While I never visited the
Ackermansion, there are lots of Youtube videos of visits people made and
also archival footage of Forry giving interviews and tours there. I
don't recall seeing any Apes stuff of note.
A number of years ago, there were ads in some of the SF magazines for a
two CD (not DVD!) video tour of the mansion. I never find these CDs.
They may contain contain POTA material as well, if you can track them down.
I did not know about this 'House of Ackerman' book you mentioned, so
thanks for that tip.

I'm predicting a good movie, and it'll be enough of a hit for a sequel, and the apes won't be CGI next time. How's that for positive thinking?
And it'll be just as much a prequel as a reboot!

Ed Gross chats up director Rupert Wyatt and the writers of the new "Apes" movie. Pretty much general comments but good to hear what sparks their interest.
Writer Rick Jaffa says, "it's socially relevant the way I think (the originals) were and I think that ultimately the theme is the same. That theme, for us, is if Man plays God, it's going to eventually come back and get you".
Wyatt describes the plot, saying," we see a scientist, a man who is driven to becoming this Dr. Frankenstein, and the reasons behind why he does that. The personal reasons as well as the hubris. It's also the story of his relationship with his creation. As such, I think it makes it a much more personal story than what's come before".
Writer Amanda Silver adds, "this is a film with a lot of heart. In many ways, that is a motor for the story, but it becomes a very exciting story".

.html People have been assuming that "Rise of the Apes" will be something like "Conquest", but the director said if the ape vs. human war is depicted, it would be in the next film. I'd say that would make IT the new "Conquest", while "Rise" is more like "Escape". Apes don't land from the future, but it's about one ape (Caesar) interacting with the humans. Amanda Silver, the writer, said there's a lot of heart, and I think that description fits "Escape". >SPOILER< And the film literally climaxes with an escape, not a conquest. Like "Escape", the movie will be more intimate and show how things get started. And it happens that 2011 is the 40th anniversary of "Escape", so it all fits. <.html

Like you, I enjoyed the remake despite the flak it got. I was brought up watching the original films and TV series during the early seventies, yet I still warmed to the Burton film despite its flaws. It's not comparable to the original, that's for sure, but I can take the film as a standalone and it has some qualities that I appreciate.
I'm probably a bit cynical and expect that Rise won't be as good as hoped for, but I'm hoping that I am wrong. The words from Amanda Silver mentioned in the "director, writers talk "Rise of the Apes" thread do fill me with some hope, though, but then they're just words and not the final product. Fox have a history of interference with the Apes franchise, which not only happened during Burton's film but also with the originals. Sure, they have to be commended for taking on Planet of the Apes, but they sure have a nice way of spoiling things... or attempting to.
As for the topic, I do see some parallels despite the fact that Escape is really a different story. If Rise engages me anywhere near that of Escape, then I suppose I'd be quite happy. Escape is my favourite of the sequels, the original being my favourite of the films... naturally.

Thanks Graham, great minds and names think alike just
like apes lol I held off buying the remake for some time on dvd as I was
told 'oh its awful, the ending sucks' and I thought at first I dont care if I
see it or not then I actualy bought it and watched it and was riveted ,also some
people never experienced the original ape movies until they saw it so, that
movie must have sent them retro and made new apes fans so, never a bad
thing. Off topic but similer,I was looking for a war /strategy game of
planet of the apes and someone did a version for 'empire earth' with
the apes civilisation ,not played it as probably won't be able to ,but, its out
there if anyone wants it,also did anyone finish the ps or pc apes
game, cheers,Graham <.html <.html

Sure, I was brought up on those too back in seventies Britain. Thing is, that's the first thing that I thought of when I was watching the dinner table scene in Burton film for the first time. I love that scene, but I did have the thought: "ooh, how cute, a chimps' tea party!" ;) It also makes me wonder if any of the three British actors at that table would have brought up the same association (I'm under the impression, which might be wrong, that the PG Tips advert featuring chimpanzees was solely a British affair).

I'd rather have a thought provoking film with some emotion thrown in, than a pure actionfest. Still, I can take take some action, it just depends on how saturated it is. One thing I'd love is to see the book faithfully adapted, or at least as near as possible.

I don't agree with him about DVDs and Blu-rays. Digital downloading simply doesn't deliver the kind of picture and sound quality you get from Blu-rays. Also, film buffs like have a favorite movie in a package, with extras and such. It may become a very niche market, which DVDs are already becoming with the studio's "burn-on-demand" programs, but I see Blu-rays being around for the next decade.

He means all the big movies week after week, proven franchises. Somebody is going to lose (and since his movie isn't part of a famous franchise it could be him). Of course this happens every summer, they put all their big guns out in a few months. Yes, "Harry Potter", "Pirates" and "Transformers" are solid competitors but others like "Green Lantern" and "Thor" are question marks. "X-Men" usually does OK but not great lately. Last summer the thing that saved Hollywood was family films and there's more next summer (there has to be a place to take the kids, especially when vacations are out of reach during tough times). I think people don't have the money for all the films they want to see and they're going to choose. There's a lot of bucks on the line for these movies and they're not all going to win, but that's true every summer (I think people are going to get
"superhero fatigue" real soon).
Obviously the big event is the last "Harry Potter". "Rise of the Apes" might benefit from that in having one of the core actors from that in the cast (Tom Felton). I think most people assume Harry will take the summer but we'll see what happens.

June 17: The weekend before "Rise", uh, rises, "The Green Lantern" shines his light. Will he be a juggernaut or be extinguished fairly quickly?
June 24: "Rise of the Apes" vs. "Cars 2"
July 1st: "Transformers 3" and the Tom Hanks/Julia Roberts vehicle "Larry Crowne" (Hanks goes back to school but he's no Rodney Dangerfield)
July 8: "Zookeeper" (a big Kevin James comedy that sounds kinda "Dr. Dolittle"; animals help their zookeeper find love)
July 15: By the time the final "Harry Potter" and the "Winnie the Pooh" movie come out, "Rise of the Apes" ' fate will pretty much be written. <.html

| Subject: OT: "Terra Nova", from "Rise of the Apes" producer Peter Chernin |
.htmlPeter Chernin was a very big cheese at 20th Century Fox and then it's parent company News Corp. Indeed, he was # 2 behind the mighty founder Rupert Murdoch. He left in 2009 when it was obvious he didn't have any further to go (Murdoch's children will inherit the top spots in the company). As part of his "golden parachute" Chernin was guaranteed a minimum number of movies as a producer. Among the projects he inherited was the new POTA . Thus "Rise of the Apes" is the first movie that will be released from his new production company Chernin Entertainment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Chernin
But beating "Apes" to the punch is Chernin's first TV show. He's co-producing the show "Terra Nova" with Steven Spielberg. It's about people in the dying world of 2149 who have the technology to go back to the prehistoric past (dinosaurs!) and start over. Kinda sounds like "Avatar" in reverse, and even has "Avatar" 's Stephen Lang (the crazy Patton dude) in the cast. It follows a family who is part of one of the expeditions ("Land of the Lost", anyone?). Anyway, it's a fairly ambitious series and shows that Chernin wants to make a big splash as a producer, an attitude that might also be part of the equation of "Rise of the Apes". Though some might not be thrilled with a "suit" as a producer. The pilot for "Terra Nova" is scheduled for May 2011, a month before "Rise", and then the series will begin Fall 2011.

Changing the future. Did none of these people ever read "A Sound of Thunder?" (and avoid the terrible film of the same name).

.html
(Wasn't sure if you guys had heard about this yet- I am still geeking out and trying to to hyperventillate...- in a good Simian way... This is what I sent to our yahoo at BrokenSea- so bear with me on redundat points made here and there as I know most people here know the Groovy Rich Handley.)
Hay gang!
I received an email a couple days ago from my buddy Rich Handley...
( Rich is the author of Timeline of the Planet of the Apes and a good friend and fellow Simian... Rich also mentioned our BrokenSea production in his brilliant Simian Tome! Rich ROX!> http://www.hassleinbooks.com/index.html" )
And GUESS WHAT???
Rich said he was in possession of something of interest to my Simian (Type AD) Blood...
So I asked Rich, "what might that be, amigo?"
(and Rich continued)
Hasslein Books, in cooperation with Simian Scrolls magazine and the Planet of the Apes Wikia site
is pleased to unveil something thought long forgotten:
the SCRIPT to the
Planet of the Apes LIVE STAGE show of the 1970s!!!
Considered by many to be the Holy Grail of Apes lore, the stage show was produced for British theaters by Television Character Promotions (T.V.C.), which also produced a U.K. Apes-based fan club with Marvel Comics, as well as a rodeo-style POTA arena show. The shows were written by Mike McCarthy, directed by McCarthy and Tom McCabe, and produced by Michael A. Caulfield and Bill Kenwright.
(Thanks to Neil for writing that article and for granting permission to use the images contained within, to Mike McCarthy for generously offering his time and access to his archives, to Simian Scrolls' Dave Ballard for cleaning up the images prior to posting, and to those who provided Neil with the images culled from the Wikia site.)
The script is copyright © Mike McCarthy. Planet of the Apes and all related characters are copyright © 20th Century Fox. No rights infringement is intended.
~Rich Handley
And- as if finding the Holy Grail of POTA Scripts wasn't the grooviest thing ever...
There was MORE...
Mike McCarthy <script author> just so happened to be an acquaintance of Rich's...
So I emailed Mike after a very kind introduction by Rich...
And guess who is NOW getting to Transform this script into an Audio Drama-- and then create said Audio Drama???
Us crazy folks here at BrokenSea... Yep, the home of the Audio Simians!
So get your Helms shined up, Horses and Rifles ready, all stinking humans back in their pens, BECAUSE- MORE POTA is coming to BrokenSea!
~Bill "The Apeman" Hollweg
Mike McCarthy and Rich Handley and all here at POTA Yahoo- you ROOOOOOOOOCK! --

I thought every year was meant to be a "bloodbath" of sorts. Seems like hyperbole to me.

I wonder when the Golden Globes were in 1967? If it was in the early spring, then that photo of Heston could show him starting to grow the beard for PLANET, but he also would have just finished WILL PENNY.
Funny that Heston would be at the premiere of HALF A SIXPENCE in Feb. 1968, but he wasn't at the PLANET premiere.
All of this is very ancient history, of course.

What about time paradoxes? Changing the future.
According to James, that isn't possible. All you do is create time loops.

.html I've been reading issue 44 of the excellent BackIssue mag , a Spider-Man special (highly recommended if you're a webhead)and in it there's an article on the live action Spidey series from the late 70s starring Nicholas Hammond. The article says the Spidey pilot was CBS' biggest hit in 1977, but the studio were still not happy because too high a percentage of the audience was children. And so, due to lack of real impetus from the studio, the show declined and was cancelled.Very similar to the Apes tv series.I wonder if the same attitudes prevail today or does the kiddie buck smell just as sweet as the adult buck in this age of wealthy young 'uns?
