Didn't Apemania work at restoring the statue, or was it the one Sammy Davis Jr. had that they restored? I believe the statue is made of fiberglass, which means it should hold up fairly well to rain. It's constant exposure to sun that I'd worry about.
Apemania sells or used to sell exact reproductions of the statue, so they must have the original molds. I wonder how many they've sold? They also offered just the Lawgiver bust and just the face.

It doesn't have to be in a vault but leaving it outside exposed to the elements can't be good for it. And not all statues are outside. Religious statues are usually inside. <.html

I got mine literally within the hour (it's Saturday morning). I like all the illustrations and can't believe just how much "stuff" there is in the POTA universe.
However, I'm sorry to have to say this, but I think I've already discovered an error.
In the entry for "Marcus, Lieutenant/Police Chief" it's written that he was "chief of Ape City's Simian Secret Police. Where does this come from? Is it in one of the PLANET script draft's. The PLANET posters and ads called him "Head of Security Police," and he says "Security Police" to Zira when Taylor is captured in the net in the actual film.
Also, "Simian Secret Police" is kind of silly, because it implies there are other kinds of Secret Police, such as Sapien Secret Police, or Equestrian Secret Police or some such.
Anyway, nice book otherwise.

.htmlHi, Rory! I'm glad you're enjoying the book. Regarding the error--it's actually not. :)
Here's the first paragraph of the notes for the Marcus entry:
NOTE: According to The Ape (a mock herald published to promote the theatrical release of Planet) and the novel Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes (slated for publication in 2011), Marcus served as the chief of the Simian Secret Police. Other sources have also identified him as the leader of the Hunt Club, though Marcus and the Hunt Leader were played by different actors. Conspiracy will explain that the Hunt Club reported to Marcus.

Well, I'm not trying to start an argument, but I think it is an "error" to take as a source something from a film's publicity campaign rather than from the film itself. And I say the posters and ads from PLANET trump "The Ape" herald, but that's just me.
So, just for the record, in PLANET OF THE APES, Marcus (Bob Lombardo) says "Security Police" to Zira (Kim Hunter). (Also, it's Marcus who talks to Julius about getting Taylor ready for surgery too.) The Security Police are THE police in PLANET. There ain't any other police -- in fact, there isn't even an army, but let's not get into that.
And, of course, just who is the leader of the gorillas in PLANET, Marcus or the Hunt Club Leader? My position is that the Hunt Club would pre-date the Security Police because the apes would have had gorillas hunting humans long before the society set up a police force. The Hunt Leader also has more glyphs of his bandoleer, which could indicate a higher rank in the society, or it could mean a higher rank in the general order of the gorillas.
But the movie doesn't make any of this clear, so..... whatever!

Hi, Rory!
Conspiracy will explain that the Hunt Club reported to Marcus.

have their own commanders... They might not be connected... It seems like the
Security Police would be more to keep the apes in line, where the Hunt Club
would be to keep the human population in check... Both branches of the Apes
power structure, but each with it's own purpose...

.htmlThe "Rise of the Apes" composer (unless imdb got it wrong) seems to be well regarded. He's had a long association with director Kenneth Branagh, including his "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (which featured POTA2001's Helena Bonham Carter; Arthur Jacobs developed an adaptation of the original "Frankenstein" novel but it was never made). He was the first composer for the "Harry Potter" series post-John Williams, which seems to be his biggest claim to fame. He seems to do more intimate movies, not the big blockbuster type. Take that as you will.

If Sammy's was made afterward, then the studio still had molds for the statue. I wonder if anything new was made during the production of BENEATH? Obviously the molds must have been destroyed at some point.
I wonder, though, what Apemania did in order to offer copies of the statue? Did they cast new molds from Sammy's copy?

If you just look at PLANET itself, and forget all that came afterward and wasn't on anyone's mind when PLANET was created, why would the apes need an army?
You say the hunts had nothing to do with the police, but it's the police doing the hunts. I think the gorillas tended to be either police or laborers, such as Julius. As seen in the original film, it's the police that do the hunting, not gorillas dressed like laborers.

.htmlIf you do an investigation of Doyles work he did do alot of films and many good scores. In my opinion the choice of Tom Scott back in 72 would have garnered a grunt from people like us and to me as it turned out his score is generaly regarded as second to Goldsmiths original(read the CD notes and other articles). True we wanted a Howard Shore or something but this is proof that the film is a more intamate film like Escape ,based on Conquest, and the real action will not start until a sequel. Thats the rub also. And thats what gets us nervous I think. We will be their but without alot of pyrotechniques will the average moviegoer attend.
The way it seems and I hope im right is that Fox will go on a more cerebral path and the real action will take place on later films. If you look at the original Planet of the Apes, action is their, but its only an adjucnt to the storytelling and not what the film is all about. Will Fox care if this new film does not break all records and continue the series if its a good film and not let the dollar soley dictate where to take the series.
I know this sounds like wishfull thinking, and giving Foxes history, (on the surface) im probably wrong. If the series continues will the filmakers go witha more action oriented and higher posistioned music maker. These are all guesses and if the 2001 debacle is any indication what I just wrote is alot of "Hoga moga". Take care, John M.

So I can see where he might have known Doyle or hung out in those circles. Doyle also did Fox's craptastic dragon movie "Eragon" so there's another connection.

Whatever happened to Sammy's statue? I recall that after he died there

I did toy with the idea of including actors, writers, etc. The problem was what that would have done to the book, which was already 422 pages. I was trying to keep the cost and size down as much as possible, so I decided to keep in in-universe. I hope not having the actors mentioned wasn't too much of an annoyance. :)

This is big news in the world of sci-fi. That gives those who are bored by the movie 17 more minutes to catch up on their sleep. Unfortunately Trumbull said Warners has stopped that totally rocking "2001" documentary he was working on that I brought up a while back.
"2001" is POTA's 1968 little brother. They linked arms and said, "We are not afraid (except HAL). Sci-fi is here to stay". They pushed open the door so George Lucas could squeeze in. "2001" was the last movie Arthur Jacobs watched before his death. On-topicish. Thanks to thedigitalbits for the heads up.

On your website it says: "James Aquila has contributed a 2010 Calendar to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Escape from the Planet of the Apes."
Shouldn't that read "contributed a 2011 Calendar"?
Still, thanks for hosting that calendar. It looks neat.

There was apparently an event to celebrate the blu-ray release of "Space: 1999" and apparently FX legend Douglas Trumbull was there and apparently said that Warner Bros. has found 17 minutes of lost "2001" footage in their salt mine. Thanks to thedigitalbits for the heads up.

.htmlUniversal and Sy Fy (formerly the Sci-Fi Channel) will join together to create Sy Fy Films, and hope to start producing two genre films a year by 2012. Obviously they don't have the rights to POTA but they've done some good work on the home screen and maybe they'll raise the current very low bar on the big screen for sci-fi movies. They've been pretty ambitious, trying to do faithful adaptations of the "Dune" novels (Arthur Jacobs was the first to try to go there) and the terrific redo of "Battlestar Galactica", which won a Peabody Award and was even invited to the U.N. I'd be interested to see what they could do on the big screen.
The Sci-Fi Channel was also very good to POTA, showing the TV series (including the "lost" episodes) when they couldn't be seen anywhere else and enlisting Roddy McDowall to host POTA Week. Good luck Sy Fy!

You forgot to mention commercials up the ying yang! I can't stand to watch it and AMC because of all the damn commercials. I have to DVR things and watch them later so I can scan through the crap.

Paramount is hardly getting anything from their vintage catalog out on Blu-ray. We're only getting TRUE GRIT this week because of the remake coming out next week -- and it isn't even a restoration transfer. I've seen many Paramount titles in HD on satellite, but who knows when they'll get to Blu-ray.
Meanwhile.... I'm glad to see 2001 getting a new Blu-ray Special Edition next years (it being one of my favorite movies), and if it's getting a new Blu-ray, then I think PLANET OF THE APES should get one too.

Cool! That was the whole point of it. :)

You know, they're really not bad. I know they get trashed a lot--and abominations like the Ape Nation and Ape City miniseries deserve it--but Malibu also did a lot of good work. Sins of the Father, Countdown Zero and Urchak's Folly were particularly good, as was the opening storyline of the monthly series. I recommend tracking them down--you might even be able to find torrents of the entire run online.

That's why I don't watch TV
anymore. I stick to DVDs. At this point, the only show I still watch is The
Walking Dead, which just finished its first season. Otherwise, there is not a
single TV show I watch.

James Franco mentioned why he did "Rise of the
Apes". He did for the best of all reasons, he did it for "Lord of the
Rings".
"Lord of the Rings", you ask? This!
Maybe they should call the new movie "Lord of the
Apes". Wait, that's been taken. <.html <.html

Sci-Fi Channel was never really an "independent"... They were/are owned by the
USA Network... That's also part of the reason they started showing
wrestling: Cross network programming...
As to their name change, it was changed to Sy Fy so it's a name they can
"own", (the old name Sci Fi is too general of a term to claim ownership of)
and they also changed it to attract audiences who'd normally never watch the
network due to the stigma around the old Sci Fi name... ***

.htmlI loved Revolution. I know that some of the people did not like them
taking liberties with some aspects (gorilla's in fighter jets) but I
didn't have much of a problem with that. There was a huge gap in the
timeline between Conquest and Battle where it was obvious that a lot of
things happened in the interim. Revolution filled that gap, whether you
liked their decisions or not.
But I think what I really liked about the series was that it was very
dark and edgy which was where the movie series left off viewers at the
climax of Conquest.
I also really liked the back stories in Revolution, the story about
Taylor's daughter being my favorite. Many people complained that it did
not fit in with the cannon as we knew it (ie Taylor even having a
daughter). But as the story was presented, it was a perfectly possible
scenario and could even explain Taylor's downbeat take on humanity in POTA.
My favorite comic series will always be Terror, which aside from being
great on it's own merits, was the series I grew up with. But Revolution
comes in a close second.

Oddly enough, the three comics I consider the worst are all of those with names that begin with "Ape." <.html

Rich, I received my copy today, and I am absolutely
blown away! I can't imagine the database you must have. I read
"Timeline" cover to cover twice, and now I'm going to start on this one. I
only have two words for it: AWE - SOME!! This will be a treasured
piece in my collection. What a wonderful Christmas present! Thanks
so much for all your hard work! I'm sure Apes fans around the world will
just love this book!

nonscripted stuff, like the history and animal channels. I do wish Syfy
would bring Forever Knight back because we don't get Chiller channel. As
for the channel itself, I tried to get into Sanctuary, but wasn't able
to, and right now, all I watch it for are Highlander reruns and Merlin,
although this season I watched the Merlin eps online after their UK air
so they aren't new to me.
The films though are usually crap, I agree there. I haven't forgiven them for further butchering the HIghlander franchise with The Source lol. I did enjoy one film way back on the channel but the recent ones, eesh.

Future History Chronicles started off very well, but got extremely weird by the later chapters. And Terror... oh, boy... I can only assume Moench was taking heavy daily doses of 'shrooms while writing that one.

segments when I said Terror was my favorite. The conflict between
friends Jason and Alexander is probably the highlight of the series and
yet that is how the story line starts, not something that it builds up
to. I also liked Brutus. As a human hating gorilla, he topped even Ursus
and Urko. The 'brains in jars' aspect that so many people cite as the
tipping point where theseries lost credibility is actually something of
a staple in Science Fiction, but it just didn't belong in a POTA story.
