I love "Evolution's Nightmare." Well-scripted, beautifully drawn and with three lead characters you can truly care about. It's my favorite Marvel tale as well. Marvel's "Quest for the Planet of the Apes," about an attempt on Aldo's part to wrest power from Caesar, is also excellent. In addition to those two stories, my favorite POTA comics of all time would be, in no particular order:
* Revolution on the Planet of the Apes--I know people slag it for the continuity issues, but in terms of characterization, concept, tone and artwork, I think it's brilliant.
* Quitting Time--in my opinion, the best story to come out of Malibu, about an Ape Management Publications copy writer who finds himself in the midst of Caesar's revolt (and who is revealed to be the character who received a bad shoeshine in Conquest)--I absolutely love this story
* Urchak's Folly--Malibu's second-best work, featuring a dynamic villain, a three-dimensional protagonist and the best artwork of the Malibu run
* Sins of the Father--another brilliant Malibu story, detailing a tale from Zaius' youth and revealing how he became guardian of the terrible secret of simian origins
* Countdown Zero--a multi-parter from the monthly Malibu run, about a trio of astronauts who'd been deployed on a space mission prior to Caesar's takeover and the subsequent nuclear war, and who then came back to Earth to find chaos awaiting them--the ending is a great tie-in to the first film
* Blood of the Apes--OK, the idea that no one would notice a human posing as an ape is admittedly ridiculous, but otherwise, I really dig this story about a simian bounty hunter, with its examination of ape-human racial hatred
* Human War/Old Gods/Bloodlines--to my great surprise, Dark Horse's spinoff from the Burton film was fantastic, worlds above the movie itself
* Blow for Blow--a story from the third U.K. hardcover annual, about a gorilla named Jehan staging a coup d'état against Urko--easily the best comic to be based on the TV series
* Monkey Planet--the opening four-parter from Malibu's run set such a great stage for that series, with the introduction of Alexander, Jacob, Simon, Grunt and Coure... it's a shame the writing went so wonky as the series developed (much like Marvel's storylines) <.html

Mary Shelley's 1818 novel "Frankenstein" is often considered the first science fiction story and of course it's been overshadowed by the 1931 Boris Karloff movie. Arthur Jacobs had wanted to do a movie based on Shelley's novel but it never happened. Instead, Kenneth Branagh got the closest in 1994. Some felt it was too faithful, and other complaints resulted in mixed reviews. But I always liked this movie. And Doyle's music helps bring it to life. It's alive!

That version of Frankenstein was terrible -- and not really all that "faithful." Robert DeNiro played the creature -- pretty much as Robert DeNiro, just with some scars on his head. Believe me, he was scarier in GOODFELLAS. And then there was Helena Bonham Carter in a "What-the-f***-were-they-thinking?" moment at the end where she got to wear a bunch of scars -- and dance! To describe it as awful would be an understatement, but what the hell -- Krueger likes it. Maybe he'll buy the Special Edition on Blu-ray.

It wasn't too good, but it was just about watchable. Funnily enough, I'm currently reading Frankenstein at the moment, not having read it for some years, and agree that although Brannagh's is the most faithful, it's still far from that. I didn't have too much of an issue with DeNiro (it was a different take on the monster, which wasn't meant to be Karloff), and I thought that Bonham Carter was OK in this film, but what really dragged it down a hell of a lot was Brannagh's acting and direction. He lacks emotion when he's meant to have some, then overdoes it when restraint is required.

I got the script today and I'm like a kid at Christmas (except I'm
50 and it isn't Xmas yet lol) !!! It is an original and I believe used script as
the pages are bent around the binding as is the cover. The description
of Farrow ("in his late 60's, has an unkempt beard") is highlighted on the first
page in faded yellow marker so maybe it was Royal Dano's original copy of
the script? Just a theory.
It has a cast and set list included (some scripts are missing
these), and Peter Burke's name here is Ed Rowak! I didn't know his name was
changed right before the first ep was filmed.
I have not read the whole thing yet I plan to run the show and read
along to see the other differences.

In my humble opinion all the Marvel story threads started off well but each succeeding 'chapter' was worse than the one before. It's a shame they didn't do more one-offs. So, when I vote for 'Terror' as my favorite I'm voting for those 1st few installments before all the psychedelic lunacy took center stage.
Then again... It was the 70's!

Redo, yes. Terrific, no. It swiped the name and did something completely
different with the material in the exact same manner Burton & Fox
did back in 2001 with POTA. The same thing was done to The Bionic Woman a
few years back (by one of the people involved in the Galactica alteration), but
thankfully that disappeared quickly.

Greetings, everyone.
I have come across another obscure item that I thought
might be of interest to the collectors in the group. The attached page is
from a parody called "Movie Ideas Before They Got Them Right!" from the March
1998 issue of Cracked Magazine. I hope it gives you a grin! If
anyone wants the entire parody or the entire magazine, just drop me an e-mail
and I'll be happy to send it to you.
I would also like to take the opportunity to wish all
of you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday
season!
Your friend,
Jeff (RedSpy) <.html <.html

.html It's no secret that I didn't care for Revolution on the Planet of the Apes. There were just too many inconsistencies to it. Some of the Major ones, that went against the series and Conquest (for me) were:
The Flying Gorillas. Just a silly, needless idea. Along with the bombing of the Statue of Liberty. Go watch Beneath again. It's clear that NYC avoided a direct hit, since so much of it was left. The statue was buried, but it was in pretty good shape. Back to the Gorillas - if Apes were slaves, you don't teach them to use weaponry - that's simply a stupid idea. You'd want them to be docile and subservent.
Aldo not being in the city. He was quite clearly in whatever City it was Ceasar led his revolt in, not off leading Gorilla pilots. Another silly idea.
The Alpha Omega bomb being under Breck's control. This is the dumbest idea of all. No civilian authority, other than the president has any control over nuclear weapons. NONE. The military would never agree to anything like this. Just a lame idea.
There are others, but I don't want to totally rip this up. I'd put it barely above Terror on the Planet of apes. But since I'm waiting for Mile High Comics to send me issues 1-22 of Planet of the Apes, the Annual and Urchak's Folly - it may be higher than these. <.html

.html The five original films, one per day for five days, Monday January 3rd
through Friday January 7th on Cinemax (East) and CinemaxHD (East), every
day at noon EST. Looks like it's the theatrical version of BATTLE though.
Still, it's always cool to see these broadcast on television.

The whole thing with Breck and the Alpha Omega bomb bothered me as well. In
REVOLUTION, Breck says that he "conceived, commissioned, and funded" (or
something to that effect) the Doomsday bomb, which implies that it was built
when Breck was in a position of power. So then, how did Taylor (in BENEATH) know
about it's existence? He would have had to know when he left Earth, which is
almost 20 years prior to CONQUEST/REVOLUTION. Even conservatively placing Breck
at 40/45 years of age during CONQUEST, I can't see him having that kind of power
when he was in his early 20's.
As for the Malibu stuff, Urchak's Folly was excellent, Sins of the Father
was pretty good, and Blood of the Apes is held in pretty high regard (I've never
read that one myself). The rest of it was awful. Painfully awful.
I actually enjoyed all the Marvel stuff. At the time (I was around 12 when
I collected the magazines) I was just happy to be reading any new POTA stories.
BTW, I got them ALL through mail order catalogs which I received by
combing through all those one inch classified ads in the regular Marvel Comic
books. No sissy instant gratification internet.

>>It's no secret that I didn't care for Revolution on the Planet of
the Apes. There were just too many inconsistencies to it. Some of the Major
ones, that went against the series and Conquest (for me) were:
The Alpha Omega bomb being under Breck's control. This is the dumbest idea
of all. No civilian authority, other than the president has any control over
nuclear weapons. NONE. The military would never agree to anything like this.
Just a lame idea.
There are others, but I don't want to totally rip this
up. I'd put it barely above Terror on the Planet of apes. But since I'm waiting
for Mile High Comics to send me issues 1-22 of Planet of the Apes, the Annual
and Urchak's Folly - it may be higher than these. << <.html <.html
