It's like an old "APES Week" on the 4:30 Movie. I wonder if the HD telecasts will be in the full letterbox or cropped? We'll see.

The five original films, one per day for five days, Monday January 3rd
through Friday January 7th on Cinemax (East) and CinemaxHD (East), every
day at noon EST. Looks like it's the theatrical version of BATTLE though.
Still, it's always cool to see these broadcast on television.

If you think I'm done with this kind of stuff, think again.
Here's some screen grabs from a 1955 MGM movie called MOONFLEET. A little over halfway through the movie is a sequence at an ocean cove that's the same place (Point Dume) where PLANET OF THE APES would be shot some twelve years later (MGM also shot at another CA beach and made it look in the movie as if it was all one place).
MOONFLEET is available on DVD-R from Warner Archives. I haven't bought it, yet, but every so often it shows up on TCM and that's where I copied it from here.
The scenes are dark compared to PLANET because it was supposed to take place at night (smugglers unloading their goods) and MGM used a heavy blue filter. I've actually lightened them up a bit. In the bottom shot you'll see a navel officer atop the cliff above the cove. Well, he's just been shot in the head and is about to fall backward off the cliff! The actor that played the unfortunate fellow was John Hoyt, who played a chimp a couple times in the POTA TV series.
Jeff Krueger has been to this beach, but as far as I know has never taken a header off the cliff top, not that anyone can tell the difference.

POTA (and "Escape") were shot at Zuma Beach, not Point Dume. There's a difference.
My understanding is that Zuma Beach ends where the cliff outcropping begins and that the cove behind it, where the cave sequence was filmed, is a separate part, though I'm not sure of it's name because I've read it called many things. Point Dume is the point of land itself, as far as I know.
I'm sure Jeff Krueger noticed that Ironman's fictional house in those two movies is supposed to be atop Point Dume -- if that's what it's called.

Since I don't have any of the Cinemax packages on TWC, and I don't like commercial interuptions when the story gets interesting, I'll have my own marathon with widescreen presentation of all five,
plus the T.Burton version, and both tv version to 'Overdose' on
POTA fix....And a data projector and huge screen with 5.1 to
enjoy the Tim Burton version because stereo was not that big of a deal back in those days for the original versions, it was just there.
I do my POTA super overdose once a year till another version is produced. Which at that point, I'll add it to my "fix' <grin> <.html

Even when I got round to collecting the 29 US version, still a few missing, I went for the ones withe the TV features first. As a graphic designer I love the artwork but coverage of what was current with the TV show and past with the films was more emotitive to me. Rob R

I agree people don't seem to be expecting much and there's a feeling of "been there, done that" (instead everyone is excited about yet another shovelful of superhero movies). So instead of being a risk, the CG might bring a fresh element to it.

According to this preview article (http://www.totalfilm.com/features/the-49-films-that-will-define-2011), the opening for CARS 2 has been pushed back to July 22nd. This is the first I've read of this (Have I just scooped "Rona" Krueger?).
The article goes on to say that the dropping of prosthetics in favor of CGI is risky for APES, but since no one is "expecting much" from the movie it could be the "sleeper hit of 2011."
We'll see.

All this probably indicates that for Fox this movie is something special (You know, like the way Jeff Krueger is special). I'm sure they don't want to put out a trailer until enough of the CGI is done to create something really spectacular.

Weak comedy, but not as bad as that latest one with Marky Mark and Will Farrell. Boy, what a stinker that was. Can't even remember the title, something like "The Douchbag Guys."

Here's something I've been wanting to show for a while, but only just borrowed the camera to take the pictures.
Last year I bought "The Prisoner" on Blu-ray. It ended up coming in a Blu-Ray case that holds five discs. As soon as I saw it, I knew what I'd eventually do. I put the five "Prisoner" Blu-ray discs in their own slim cases, and then I took the five PLANET OF THE APES discs out of their "problematic" case, which I don't like pulling out everytime I want to watch one, but otherwise have little problems with, and I did what you'll see in the attached photos.
This simply makes it easier to get at the discs, and notice that the pictures I used on the insert are screen captures from the trailers.

It's been months since we heard they finished the CG on the opening sequence and it sounded like that turned out good. Really there's not a whole lot of CG to it. Most of the time just one chimp. Get people used to the idea that it'll be one chimp and John Lithgow, not "Conquest".
I'm not asking for myself, it's just Rory REALLY wants that teaser. He loves to be teased.

.htmlJust goes to show that money does not a good movie make. To me it was one of the worst movies ever made. Special effects-big deal- the story was so banal it made Apes 2001 read like Citizen Kane...John M.

 Here's some TV
Guide/newspaper clippings from the 70's I found in a envelope in my room.
There's also a long Roddy article I'll put in another email. Bruce

I got my hands on issues 1-22, the Annual and Urchak's Folly and I'll be honest - these are crap. The Monthly had some of the worst writing and art I've ever seen. What are supposed to be apes look like mutants and other than the first few issues, the story denigrates quickly into crap. The names are also mental - Frito and Jojo? The Spirit of Governor Breck? How I didn't barf right on some of these issues is beyond me. The art in the monthly, as well as being dreadful, in the case of Ollo and his Gorillas, was simply a rip off the Gorillas from Jack Kirby's far superior Kamanadi series. The entire Simon and Grunt sub plot was decent - until Simon was dragged along by a Gorilla, supposedly to become and Aldonite. (I also thought the Taylorite idea silly, but the art in Urchak was the best of the series). This garbage made Terror and Revolution (which could have been great without some of the lamer ideas) look like Hugo award winning
ideas.
Now I'm left with a lone idea - what do I do with these? :) <.html

.html.html Along with advertising dollars I believe Avatar was close to $500 million by the time it was released.
The CG cost on Avatar alone was about a million dollars a minute.
What saved Avatar in the end was the jacked up prices on 3D.
A lot more people saw Titanic than Avatar but on the other hand Titanic ticket prices weren't $10 to $15 dollars a pop.

.html I agree with most posts which say Marvel Comics lost the plot with 'Terror on the Planet of the Apes', but what the UK branch of Marvel did really took the biscut.
They took an earlier comic strip called Killraven and simply reprinted it, drawing apes over ordinary characters, and calling it'Apeslayer'.
Does anyone else remember that? <.html

Seriously? A scale replica?? I always thought they filmed that scene from
scaffolding and matted the painting in later... (rolling eyes).
Anyone want to go in and edit that?

>>Thanks for the heads up Chris! <<
You're welcome. I figure those who receive the Digest won't find out
about each movie the day after it aired. Speaking of which, this
starts tomorrow for those of you who are interested.
>>It's like an old "APES Week" on the 4:30 Movie. I wonder if the HD
telecasts will be in the full letterbox or cropped? We'll see. <<
Please post and let me know. I'll be at work and unable to watch
them.
Come to think of it, WPIX had an "Apes Week" of the TV movies (at noon)
back in the late 80's and early 90's.
>>Except unlike the old 4:30 Movie, the films won't be chopped to
pieces and packed with commercials. <<
>>And yet, how many here long to return, if only
for one afternoon, to the person you were and the place you were at when you
first viewed those broadcasts.. ... in those far off days.
<<
I'd do it for a day. And in the days before home video
and HBO, I never minded the commercials because I was just happy to see the
movies.

right on... What could have been/should have been a minor resurgence of APES
turned out to be a nail in it's coffin overall... ***

.html*** Yes, the "Apeslayer" idea was horrible... I can see "why" they did it
(they needed material quicker than Marvel US could provide it), but I don't
agree with what they did or the outcome of it... It was one of their worst
ideas, they should have just supplemented the UK weeklies with additional
pin-ups or something until more "original" material was provided... ***

or type of character he was....Just in case, someone wants to

I've been meaning to look in on how to do that.
It would be cool if for the 50th Anniversary of POTA, Fox had a mock Statue of Liberty built on that spot, if only for a few weeks. I bet a lot of people would come to see it.
