it wasn't a gimmick! it was a F***up!
Go back and listen to the British release.
It has a proper stereo image. It's just that Capital
screwed it up and didn't fix it. The leads become
like those cleaning CDs where you use them to
test if your speakers are wired backwards or not.

It would be really interesting to see the art from that discarded first print run, John. I wonder if anyone in this group has any contact with RT. The boxer shorts the astronauts are wearing from the bathing scene on look suspiciously like an alteration as well, since the "artfully" placed arms, foliage and shadows suggest that the characters weren't originally drawn wearing anything at all.
Brown Watson did well to secure Bolton's talents for the 1975 annual. The hunt scene with the Chuck likeness is a great double spread. Interestingly, Dez Skinn's blog describes the TV series comic strips from the same annual as American reprints; although they certainly resemble the Gold Key style, Skinn's comments are the only reference I've come across that any US company had plans to publish strips from the TV show. --- On Fri, 7/1/11, johnroche49 <johnroche49@...> wrote:

Roy Thomas mentioned once that he had, somewhere, a copy of the printed mag #1 that had to be scrapped. When you look really closely at the panels from #1, you can actually see where paste in new heads were done--presumably by the great John Romita, who did this stuff for Marvel at the time. So, one cool by product is the Romita is an Apes artist.Incidentally, John Bolton got away with doing an exact Chuck likeness in the 1975 UK Annual--much to his surprise as he relates in Simian Scrolls #9! .html I think if the new film begets a franchise a blu-ray of the show (maybe even the cartoon) is a possibility. But I don't know if some of the makeup could survive it. They could advertise it as starring Roddy McDowall and "that Cialis guy".

What are the prospects of the TV Series getting a blu ray release. One thing that non Apes friends always say to me is how surprised they are that the TV series is so good, given that it gets a bad press from reviewers who've clearly never watched it.The series was done on film and still is timeless and great looking---a blu ray release would be wonderful.John, Scrolls. <.html

Subject: [pota] Hairs on the Planet of the Apes [1 Attachment]
No, I'm not talking about realistic CGI hair. I'm talking hairs literally ON the PLANET OF THE APES!
I've never noticed this before on this one particular shot in the film (amazing considering how many times I've watched it), but I spotted it when comparing the Blu-ray to the new Cinemax telecast. My screen captures are from the 35th Anniversary DVD. Unfortunately I can't do the same with the Blu-ray.
Anyway, this is the scene of when Julius lets Lucius into the room to look at Taylor. In the upper right corner of the scene is a hair. I've captured three shots and put a red arrow on them to point to the hair (see attached image). This shot pulls back as they walk to the cage Taylor is in. During the entire shot the hair is there and was probably stuck in the gate of the camera during original photography.
Anyway, if you're so inclined, get your Blu-ray out and play this shot. I can literally see in the Blu-ray transfer where they've digitally covered up this hair -- and not completely. Check it out and see if you can notice it..
This leads me to suspect that the current Blu-ray transfer is merely the older transfer upscaled, color corrected, and digitally cleaned up -- but only to a degree. I have another shot to point out later.

The sales of the POTA film Blu-Rays will probably impact as well. How well did the BRs for films do versus DVD releases in 2001 and 2006?
These are all factors that will determine if it is cost effective to release the TV show on Blu-Ray.

He started by wanting one costume of every ape. He had a small but sweet collection of costumes. They looked at his gorilla costume, which included ammo belt, club and boots. The host said it's rare to see ape costumes complete and original and speculated such a costume could bring $20,000 - $30,000 now, whereas they used to go for $1,000. They also looked at his orangutan costume, which had the glyphs and orang boots. He also had some pullover masks (presumably from the movies). The host estimated his clubs could go for $ 5,000 each, an ape rifle for $5,000 - $10,000 because "they just don't exist (anymore)". Gogin's collection was estimated at $ 100,000.
> In his yard he had the Lawgiver statue that was owned by Arthur Jacobs and then his widow Natalie until the late '90's. He bought it from her. A copy was made for Jacobs' pal Sammy Davis Jr. but this was the only full-sized Lawgiver used on screen. The point of the show is to find stuff and auction it (for the famous "Profiles in History" auctions). The host said getting the Lawgiver and putting it on the cover of the auction catalog was a holy grail. He estimated the Lawgiver at $100,000 - $200,000. Gogin had outbid Fox 12 years ago, who wanted to put it in their archive. Gogin had a uncomfortable look on his face as he heard how much this stuff could go for, I guess because his wife is pressuring him to sell, but he opted not to. So that's where the Lawgiver stayed (Orange County, CA.).

What do you mean by "proper retrospective"? Do you mean commentary tracks for each episode or just a featurette or two?
I think you might want to try and take the initiative here. You've got enough info in your own head to probably do a commentary track or two yourself, or at least have enough interviews to be able to come up with the script for a good featurette. You should try writing a commentary to one episode and see how it goes.
Prepare some kind of attractive package, on glossy paper with lots of photos and send it to Fox with a proposal for doing something "retrospective" on the TV series -- especially if you offer to do it for nothing, though if it goes through I'm sure there would be compensation. If the new movie is a hit, it's quite possible Fox will at least listen, especially since a Blu-ray of the TV series hasn't yet been done..
What can it hurt to try..... if you really love the series?

If I recall correctly, apart from a few splashes of colour around their hips in some panels, the astronauts also went commando in the US "Adventures" colour reprints from which the later UK reprints were sourced. I don't know whether the shorts were added in the original run for censorship reasons or continuity; after all, Zira's line about "strange clothes" in the second issue doesn't make much sense unless Taylor was wearing something at the point of capture. But enough about naked astronauts...
Here's Earl Norem's rough for the cover of #28 of the US mag. For anyone who's interested, I nabbed it from www.comicartfans.com which also has a number of scans of original interior art pages.

I've always had a pet theory that, somewhere, there is a lost Effinger manuscript for other Apes adaptations. It makes no sense that he never adapted the first episode and certain references to restricted movement for humans in the Horse Race hint that Tomorrow's Tide was at least known to Effinger.I contacted Effinger's widow a few years ago and she kindly searched his papers, but no luck.It is just possible that in a filing cabinet somewhere, the successors of Award Books hold some Apes gold--if anybody has any thoughts on how to follow this up, I'm all ears! The workings of the Marvel UK Bullpen(really just a room in the US offices) are still a bit of a mystery. We know Stan Lee's brother, Larry Lieber was involved, as were people like Jim Salicrup, Duffer Vohland and , doing splash pages, a guy called Dave Wenzel.Even Marshall Rogers (of Batman fame, now sadly gone) chipped in with some splash, linking art and, gasp, George Perez did the cover to #10.But I've never understood how the US got the pages to the UK---it must have been by post, so it must have been photocopy pages, as the original art would definitely stay in the US.There was a two part article in FOOM, the Marvel fan club mag, back in the 70s, the first part explaining the US side of operations with the second UK part never then seeing print!I've got a Battle page that shows Aldo wearing an Urko helmet--which is how it appears in the UK reprint. But in blue pencil is a note saying 'remove helmet'(so the editor was on the ball!)
and so, in the US version, Aldo has a big head with no helmet.Other UK reprints don't have the 'wash' finish on them, so I think the UK dept quickly had first use of these pages, sometimes copying them before they were even fully finished.Which might explain how some bare backsides slipped past the US 'censor' and shocked us young 'uns over here! Yes, I am a sad, sad nerd.John, Scrolls.

Well, hopefully he's not going to try marketing it with the head of an ape, that's the kind of marketing head we don't need. Yeah, Fox would never do that kind of a thing.

This Friday, Jamie Harris plays Popeye in "The Green Hornet" (huh? what?). But soon he plays Roy in "Rise of the Apes". He talks about the latter in this interview here. Sounds like the apes are pretty violent. But he says, "the script is an amazing story. It's told very differently. It's a very humane feel to it".
His character is named Roy? Why didn't they just add another R to that, like between the O and Y?
No wait a minute, this character gets attacked by 300 apes?!!! Better they called him Krueger.

I wonder what the motivation was behind the fourth TV Series novel being released. It seems to have ridden on the coat tails of the free publicity the animated series novels would give, which were contemporary releases. It's, in my view, the weakest of the four books and the fact that The Gladiators has to re-name Barlow hints that it was intended to be released earlier.I think his knew name 'Irnar' is a pun on 'nice little earner'! I've had another boring pet theory about it all for a while---the first three novels have opening adaptations that feature Zaius---The Cure,The Surgeon,The Legacy----so , editorially, it would be good to feature thos tales, so that ALL of the main characters are introduced to the reader in the first story.Zaius is only in three adaptations (and only six episodes, anyway) and they ran out of Zaius for the fourth book.Which makes me even more suspicious that Escape from Tomorrow WAS adapted, but not
published.Maybe if Lord of the Apes had sold like hot cakes, we'd have seen a fifth book from already penned adaptations? John, Scrolls.

The difference between the US and UK experience of Apes in the 70s is interesting. You guys got to see the first two movies in 1973 (?), the tv series ended in 1974 and the Marvel mag will have last hit the shelves in Nov 1976 (cover dates are always about two months AFTER the release date). In the UK, the TV Series ran into Jan 1975 and had a summer Saturday morning repeat in the summer of 1976.The Marvel comic ran, in merged form, until June 1977, with the third Brown Watson annual appearing in about August 1977 and, to keep the momentum going, the Apes movie started to appear on tv shortly after. So, in a very real sense, Apes seemed current in the UK until the late 70s,until the 'wilderness years' of the 80s encased us in their icy grip. The 'Go Ape' festival was in June of 1974 with the first issue of Marvel's magazine coming out at the same time. The TV series was in the fall of 1974 with Conquest airing on TV in November. Unfortunately the TV series was canceled soon after that. Battle aired on TV on January 17th of '75 but it was shoved into a 90 minute time slot force many cuts in the film.
While '73 through '74 was a great time to be a POTA fan the decline really started in 1975. While the Marvel magazine did publish until the end of 1976, it became thinner and thinner over time going from 84 pages to only 50.
The franchise was really dead by the beginning of 1977 and with the release of Star Wars in May of that year it was forgotten by FOX and most fans.
But that was then, it is now 2011 and we have a new film to look forward to this summer that will hopefully revive the franchise for a new generation.

Just want to comment of this Sal Mineo story. It says that he found his role in Escape humiliating. That is so sad because I think that despite his small amount of screen time, Dr. Milo has become one of the most beloved characters from the original series. To me that is a testament to Mineo and his performance.
I've ordered that biography of Mineo from Amazon. When I get it I'll report on exactly what it says, though I can well guess the tone already, and if it ever gets made into a movie, we APES fans aren't going to like it.

I can see it now.... The musical opens with a cornfield covering the stage and a lone human on a horse riding through the corn and singing "Oh, what a beautiful morning, Oh, what a beautiful day... I have a beautiful feeling.... everything's going my way..." and then a shot rings out, the man falls and a bunch of gorillas with rifles emerge from the stalks of corn singing "I'm gonna get that man!".
POTA and musicals don't mix.

"POTA Revisited" is credited in the bibliography. Basically he wanted his career back and didn't like being anonymous in the makeup. He also wasn't thrilled with an uncredited voiceover in "Jonathan Livingston Seagull".
Let's face it, sci-fi was looked down on back then, as were sequels. Now the people that grew up on POTA and "Star Wars" are calling the shots and both sci-fi and sequels are the top attractions.

He could have just said some general comments that "it'll be good" but he's been bringing Andy Serkis into it, saying Andy is thrilled by it, etc. Lithgow sang it's praises on Twitter, he didn't have to do that. Sounds like it will at the least be an "actor's picture". As I said before, I think it will be closest to "Escape" in tone, which is cool since "Escape" turns 40 this year. But some fans like "Escape" least, so we'll see if that affects the box office this year (less action, apes, etc.).

.htmlIt's been announced that Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel will no longer be an "Alien" picture but has morphed into an original film called "Prometheus". With "Predators" a wash, I guess that leaves POTA as Fox's only name sci-fi franchise (until "Avatar" returns in 5 years or so). Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi is a big deal for POTA's genre but it's an unknown quantity. When it was an "Alien" film it was supposed to come out at Christmas, now it's scheduled for March 2012; seems like a markdown in expectations. I'm not knocking originality, but from a corporate point of view I guess they better start treating POTA right.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see Great Scott return to sci-fi after 30 years.

Chris L. (channeling Jeff K.)
Fox Shuffles 2011, Adds 'Prometheus' to 2012by Ray
SubersJanuary 14, 2011
20th Century Fox made the first major schedule change of the year this
afternoon, adding Ridley
Scott's Prometheus
and comedy The
Big Year to the calendar and shuffling six other titles, including Rise of the
Apes and Mr.
Popper's Penguins. Prometheus was scheduled for Mar. 9,
2012, where it will face Tim
Burton stop-motion animated movie Frankenweenie.
While the project was originally intended to be a prequel to Alien, director
Ridley Scott and screenwriter Damon Lindelof ( Lost) ultimately came up
with an original sci-fi story tangentially related to the Alien universe,
Fox announced. Prometheus will be Mr. Scott's first sci-fi movie since
Blade
Runner, which disappointed at the box office in 1982 but became regarded
as a classic by many. Swedish actress Noomi
Rapace ( The
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock
Holmes 2) is the only named castmember thus far, though expect that to
change very soon. Planet of
the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes has been pushed back from June
24 to Wednesday, Nov. 23. While no reason was given for the change, it is clear
that the extra five months will allow more time for the movie's complicated
motion-capture effects as well as an added head-start for Fox's marketing team.
The move leaves Cars 2 as
the only nationwide release on June 24 and pits Rise of the Apes against
The
Muppets, Arthur
Christmas and Project X
over Thanksgiving weekend. The announcement's only new title, The Big
Year, was slated for Oct. 14. The comedy stars Jack
Black, Steve
Martin, Owen
Wilson and a handful of other prominent names and focuses on bird watchers
who compete to spot the rarest North American birds in an annual competition.
While none of these stars have had impressive box office track records as of
late, director David
Frankel is responsible for recent hits The Devil
Wears Prada and Marley and
Me. The Big Year is currently scheduled to face Footloose
(2011), The Thing
(2011) and The
Three Musketeers (2011), though it's unlikely that all three of those
remakes keep that date. Mr. Popper's Penguins was the only movie
Fox moved up on the schedule: the children's book adaptation was relocated from
Aug. 12 to June 17. The Jim
Carrey vehicle will now square off against The Green Lantern and Bad
Teacher. Romantic comedy Monte
Carlo will take Popper's Aug. 12 date and vacate its previous
July 1 slot. Unsurprisingly, Jonah
Hill comedy The Sitter
was moved off July 15 (also known as Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Day) to the slightly more hospitable Aug.
5. Even though it's getting away from Harry Potter, it's still far from
competition-free: comedies The
Change-Up and The Smurfs
are currently on the schedule there, as is alien invasion thriller The Darkest
Hour. Andrew
Niccol's sci-fi thriller Now, starring
Justin
Timberlake and Amanda
Seyfried, has shifted back a month from Sept. 30 to Oct. 28, where it will
battle Lionsgate horror movie Dibbuk
Box. Taking the Sept. 30 slot is Anna
Faris- Chris
Evans comedy What's
Your Number?, which had previously been slated for April
29. <.html <.html
