I did feel slightly uneasy that the June date was rushing things, especially as WETA almost seemed to be looking at creating new technology to get things properly Ape-like.Hopefully the delay will help. The film will stand or fall on how Caesar looks, so it's got to be perfect. As for Oscars, the remit seems to be more relaxed nowadays and if Wahlberg can get nominated in the past, anything goes.Do we know what score actually beat Jerry's Apes score to the Oscar? Hard to believe he wouldn't have won nowadays.John, Scrolls.

WETA had trouble getting Kong right and had more time to do it. But they have the Kong experience to use on "Apes" and reportedly the opening sequence looked great so they seem to have nailed the apes.
> So far everyone is saying it's a great movie so I assume they took it out of summer to give it a better chance. Maybe even so it has a shot at Oscar nominations. A few years ago that would've been silly but now there's 10 Best Picture nominees and "District 9" (which seems a lot closer to "Rise" than "Avatar") surprised everyone by getting a nomination. If that happens, Fox could keep it in theaters or rerelease it for Oscar season. If it came out in June it would be on DVD already.

People seem to be comparing the new True Grit very favourably with the original, but, sadly in my opinion, they can't do it without dissing the original and, in particular, John Wayne as against Jeff Bridges.I love Bridges, but I also love Wayne.Anybody who watches Wayne in The Searchers will see a superb actor.I can recall all the fanfare about how Burton's Apes make-up triumphed over the Chambers make-up, being more 'realistic' and 'flexible'.Snag was, the new stuff didn't seem to do the job as well as the old stuff--give me Zira over Ari any day.But are we going to get similar comments when they compare CGI Caesar against make-up Caesar? CGI seems to reflect modern society's demand for perfection, so we'll probably see the original Ape make-up slagged again.I'm determined to ignore such falderdash (great word, stolen from Oliver Hardy) should it appear and judge the old and the new entirely on their own separate merits.John, Scrolls.

According to this site,
http://www.popculturemadness.com/Trivia/Oscars/Top-1968-O.html" , the
winner was John Barry for the score of "The Lion in Winter". Never heard
of it.

More interestingly, Lalo Schiffrin who went on to score the POTA TV
series was also nominated on the same ballot! That was for a movie
called "The Fox", which I've also never heard of.

Nice to read about. Mind you, am I the only one who winces when the word monkey is used instead of ape? Then again, the original book had monkey in the title, and I love the book (prefer it over anything else Ape related), so what's in a name? ;)

Actually Boulle's novel doesn't have the work 'monkey' in the title. That was a mis-translation by the original english publishers.

That is exciting news. Does anyone know if this is already in the
Previews magazine which would include an order code? I want to make
sure I pr-eorder from my local comic shop.

I check out the Boom studios site and there is no information there when
I do a search for Planet of the Apes. (http://www.boom-studios.com/)

Thanks for putting me right, for I didn't know that (obviously). What about the use of "monkey" occasionally in the book? Is that mistranslation by the English publishers or mistake by the author?

Back when I was living in Hollywood there was only
one movie channel.  If you lived in the valley there
was HBO & Cinemax, but where I lived all I could

Sandy Dennis has a lesbian affair in a cabin during
a hard winter, and she and her lover have a hard time
with a fox in the hen house -- a theme that is mirrored
when a stranger shows up and comes to live with them.
Thought I'd get it.  You can get it on special order DVD.

Do we know what score actually beat Jerry's Apes score to the Oscar? Hard to believe he wouldn't have won nowadays.John, Scrolls.

Oh, I'm glad you asked that.  I never forget to mention it on the Film Score Monthly message boards whenever it comes up -- mention it as one of the worst injustices in Academy Award history!

The score that won the Oscar in 1969 over Goldsmith's APES was John Barry's score to THE LION IN WINTER, which I used to have on CD but gave to someone, and that was because there's literally only two cues worth anything on the entire CD, the rest is BORING!

Anyone here remember John Barry's music from THE LION IN WINTER?  I doubt it.

I much prefer the old TRUE GRIT to the new, though I did enjoy the new one, but what I missed most was the great Elmer Bernstein score.

BTW, the Blu-ray of the original TRUE GRIT is excellent.

Anyway, this will be the last post on this as it's getting into BLACK SWAN territory

According to this site,
http://www.popculturemadness.com/Trivia/Oscars/Top-1968-O.html" , the
winner was John Barry for the score of "The Lion in Winter". Never heard
of it.

More interestingly, Lalo Schiffrin who went on to score the POTA TV
series was also nominated on the same ballot! That was for a movie
called "The Fox", which I've also never heard of.

Dario

"Never heard of it."  You just made my point exactly.  (BTW, THE LION IN WINTER is really a pretty good movie.)

THE FOX?  That's a movie about a woman discovering she's a lesbian, and it co-stars Keir "2001" Dullea, Sal Mineo's old pal.

Nice to read about. Mind you, am I the only one who winces when the word monkey is used instead of ape? Then again, the original book had monkey in the title, and I love the book (prefer it over anything else Ape related), so what's in a name? ;)

Not only do I wince at the use of monkey for ape, but I also generally wince at the term "comic."

Yes, but it depends on the context. In the context of Boulle's novel, he is using the word as Apes, not monkey. I often wonder of the original english language publishers mistranslated the title on purpose because they thought the name 'Monkey Planet' was more marketable.

Technically speaking, when using a torrent you are not 'sharing it' with
a torrent site. The torrent sites only host the small torrent files,
that are then used to connect the individuals sharing. But the torrent
must be accepted by the torrent trackers, which are sites that
coordinate the availability of seeders/leechers.

A torrent file can be created by anyone who has the complete source.
Although I've never tried it, I believe that a torrent can be created
and passed along with email alone and as long as there are seeders, the
torrent would function.

I'd be willing to give that a try if there are enough people torrent
enabled and it may ease the distribution burden.

I've never been keen on publishers using the multiple covers as a
commercial marketing model. I'd rather they just have one and
concentrate on sales based on quality content alone.

I don't remember the details last time, but someone in the UK (Dave?)

I agree and didn't intend to imply that we should make it a generally
available torrent. I was thinking more about creating a torrent file,
sending it out by email and then have everyone participating in the
torrent stream to simply provide their IP addresses which I hoped could
be added manually to the torrent applications. If the apps don't allow
for this manual IP inclusion, another alternative would be to
temporarily fire up a private tracker server which is a capability that
some torrent programs already have a built in. So the intent would be
create a private torrent and even then the torrent would only be
available for the short time it would take for all the participants to
achieve 100% download and everybody terminates the feed once that is done.

The US had its two Mego waves in 1974 and 1975, with the original four movie characters followed by the tv seies, but over here, the two releases by Palitoy were in 1975 and 1976.So, as late as 1976, the UK was having the Marvel comic, the animated series, the hardback annuals AND new Mego releases. No wonder we felt as though the franchise was 'current'.And shortly after wee got colour tvs and cars, too.John, Scrolls.

When Terror first started, it seemed to be in the 2670 timeframe with the Lawgiver character being the same one featured in Battle's framing scenes. But when Marvel published it's timeline it placed Terror around 2070 which is only 50 years after Battle. If you really think about it, it makes no sense at all.

I've never taken the stuff Marvel did seriously and never took their timeline seriously.  I really was only into it for the articles.

Anyway, comics tend to be action orientated and therefore don't bother with brilliant dialogue or real food-for-thought stories, so I tend not to take them seriously.

I forget which issue this was, but at one point in Terror, the Lawgiver in that story was referred to as being Ape City's second Lawgiver. So I guess the question is this: When did the first Lawgiver live? :)

*** I never bought the idea of there being more than one Lawgiver...
According to Zaius, he (The Lawgiver) was the greatest ape of all... He doesn't
say "The greatest apes of all..." Same with BENEATH, the Minister says "And
grant, in the name of your prophet, our Great Lawgiver..." He only uses the
name singularly too.. The Lawgiver is a single being... ***

Yet both blew big time chunks, dumped all over the source material, and clearly had no respect for it.

BTW, what new Space: 1999 release?

Those other things hit people in more personal ways I guess and are more recent. TV shows have a lot more stories and back stories for people to immerse themselves in. POTA has more quiet fans. <<
