Time was different back then, not sure when the
series aired in the UK but asw I was born in '72 I can remember it quite vividly
and if it was aired a lot later then it would account for the models becoming
available later.
We didn't get series straight away back in the
seventies, could have been up to a year later I would imagine.

I had a look at the excellent mego museum site and noticed that as far as
the Mego Apes releases were concerned, the UK lagged behind the US again! The
US had its two Mego waves in 1974 and 1975, with the original four movie
characters followed by the tv seies, but over here, the two releases by
Palitoy were in 1975 and 1976.So, as late as 1976, the UK was having the
Marvel comic, the animated series, the hardback annuals AND new Mego
releases. No wonder we felt as though the franchise was 'current'.And shortly
after wee got colour tvs and cars, too.John, Scrolls.

Oh, that is sad news. Although I've resented his THE LION IN WINTER score for beating out Goldsmith's PLANET OF THE APES score at the 1969
Academy Awards, that wasn't Barry's fault, and most of the scores he's done, including many of the original James Bond movies and other '60s classics, I very much like and have many on CD.
Most of my score CDs I listen to in the car to and from work. I know who I'll be listening to today.

Them's fighting words.I love the Marvel Apes universe
Either you're into comics or you're not. You see, I never read comics as a kid. I was lazy and felt read was too much work, even in a comic book, and I'd rather watch TV or go to a movie. Reading was something you had to do in school. I really didn't start reading much until I was around twelve and by then I'd rather read a good novel than a comic, so when those APES Marvel comics came out, I was more interested in what the articles had to say.

Got this quote off of Film Score Monthly's Barry Obit:
"Even the great master Jerry Goldsmith once spoke of his admiration for Barry's unique abilities to really capture a film in music."

I freely admit I'm a big comics fan (in both senses of 'big').Comics gave me some moral ideas early in my life that I have rarely adhered to but at least I know about them (it's a bit like being Catholic---we sin as much as everybody else but we're taught to feel worse about it!).Still, Stan Lee's drugs issues of Spider-Man left an indelible mark on me---I got through University without touching drugs. The Iron Man saga 'Demon in a Bottle' helped steer me away from the family tradition of alcoholism.I think the idea of comics is different from the reality of modern comics. Some of the most gripping literature out there is in comics form---Maus,Watchmen,V for Vendetta,Walking Dead, From Hell and lots of others.Cinema is mining this rich seam. The Apes mag was excellent, blessed with the great Doug Moench on scripts and some stunning art.By common consensus, Ploog's art on #6 and #8 is amongst the very best art ever published
in a black and white mag. Some of Alcala's art on Conquest is ground breaking--have a look at the two pages where Caesar cries over the death of Armando and then goes to see Aldo---in those panels you see the transition from despair to rebellion in far more touching terms than the movie conveys. Some people love comics, some hate them, some don't care.I feel lucky ,as an Apes fan, that Apes has been so well served by the medium.

I really didn't start reading much until I was around twelve and by then I'd rather read a good novel than a comic, so when those APES Marvel comics came out, I was more interested in what the articles had to say.

comics just around the time the Marvel POTA magazines came out, and
remember reading that first issue cover to cover several times over. But
my comic buying stopped after a year or two after moving to a
neigborhood where comics were not as accessible. I then became a
voracious reader of novels, mostly science fiction, and became something
of a comics snob as I felt that the written word in novels and short
stories far surpassed anything in comics. Over the years some of my
comic buying friends told me that I should be reading them, but I could
never be persuaded to try them again. It was only through a set of
coincidental circumstances that got me to revisit comics about ten years
ago. I was astonished to see how comics had grown up over the years and
how much they had matured and how intricate weaved words and images
could make for a unique storytelling experience. I've since read many of
the now classic comics (Watchmen, Maus, Dark KNight, etc) and continue
to enjoy them and good comics in general. Sure there are and always have
been some pretty bad ones, but that is the case with novels as well.
Sometimes you just have to endure some of the bad to get to the good
stuff. In a way, reading the not so great material makes you that much
more appreciative of the good.
I would suggest that people who've never read any comics at least give
it a try. But ask around first so that you aren't reading garbage that
would have you dismiss all comics in one fell swoop. Like Taylor, you
may be surprised at what you find.

Doesn't matter what you were thinking. Hunter created the disc and said he
doesn't want it up on a torrent site. End of story. If you can't honor that
request, don't ask for a copy. Also, regardless if a torrent site keeps records

distributed among members of a Yahoo group.
And my head hurts just reading your "simple" explanation of a private

All the movies ran at the cinemas (I saw Beneath, Escape and Battle on their original UK release).
I think 'Planet' was re-released while the TV show was still in its original run and the sequels were re-released after but I don't recall any marathons, only ever 'double bills' which were usually Beneath paired with Conquest and Escape with Battle (because of the ratings certificates, you see).
The movies weren't shown on UK TV until after the original broadcast of the TV series had been and gone.

Comics used to be advertised a lot on telly those days---15 second slots, normally advertising a new comic with a crappy free gift (replica war medal, model plane, tranfers etc).I remember, actually, that may very first exposure to Apes was probably that telly ad for Apes.I recall the glorious Larkin cover for #1 (the UK used US #2 for itsa first cover, possibly the best cover of the 29 issue run, using US #1 ,possibly the worst cover of the 29 issue run, as the free gift colour poster). The cover of UK #1 just exploded off the screen and had a real 'look'.Happy, happy days.John, Scrolls.

Last year I got into the recent redo of "Battlestar Galactica". It's apocalyptic sensibility reminded me of certain sci-fi I've liked in the past, so I did a search for POTA in the "Battlestar Wiki" and found that POTA was a definite influence on the show. It's main creator, Ron Moore, called POTA "one of the greatest film franchises of all time" in the podcast for the "Eye of Jupiter" episode (which includes a visual reference to "Beneath"). And episodes like "The Hub", "Revelations" and "Sometimes A Great Notion" feature references (the character Starbuck is told, "You may not like what you find" when she seeks knowledge of her destiny, and she's also referred to as the "harbinger of death"). The show also has similar names like the Sacred Scrolls and Galen. It's definitely got some themes and attitude POTA fans might cotton to. Even
Eric Greene wrote about it in the book "So Say We All".

I never got into the original "Battlestar Galactica". Even as a kid it was too wooden and bland for me. But Lew "Mandemus" Ayres did feature in the first episode. <.html

They used to advertise comics on television in the UK? Seems
unimaginable now. I've never seen any TV ads for any comics here. It
would be cool if some of these ads still existed, like we've still got
the old MEGO ads.
Dario
I never saw the POTA Mego commercials when I was a kid, and I watched enough TV to notice. So, things weren't so different here than in the UK. The only thing POTA related that I ever saw advertised on TV, other than the movies themselves, was a record store TV spot in '68 that showed the Goldsmith soundtrack cover and music from the "No Escape" cue. In fact, I wouldn't have known about the soundtrack album if I hadn't just happened to catch that ad.

I couldn't get into the BG redux and for exactly the reasons you're stating. It obviously borrowed from a lot of stuff and seemed very trite to me.

I loved the first two seasons, but it lost its way during season three. Don't talk to me about season four and the finale, because it just proved to me that Ron Moore was just winging it in the vain hope of coming to some sort of conclusion. Good start, some great episodes (loved Pegasus), but went out with a whimper. Still, when it was good, it was good and fresh.

Wouldn't it be cool if, in some way, the new movie could give a nod to the red, green and tan colours from Conquest? My pet theory as to why the gorillas were the only ones to drop their slave colours is that they, probably more than the other two, suffered brutally and were, therefore, inclined to totally break with the past, seeing speech, technolgy and learning as weapons of the masters.Have there EVER been cooler looking movies than Apes---style that serves the plot, not just style for style's sake.John, Scrolls.

Who says it's great? We've had statements like this from the members of the cast -- BUT WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO SAY?
They're working actors who want to keep working, so of course, the script is great, the director is great, all the other actors are great. It's really just so much B.S.
Hopefully this movie will be better than average in an industry that's mostly been pumping out crap for the last few years, with 20th Century Fox having one of the worst years in its history last year. Fox isn't really that creatively healthy a studio right now.
As I've said before, just keep your fingers crossed. I just wish it was still set for a June release, as June isn't that far away. Now we have to wait until November. OK, whatever, but if this film gets pushed back again, until like February 2012, then look out -- that'll mean things aren't good.

I'd agree with you on that. I think the main concern is that the studios
are all well aware of the torrent sites and monitor them very closely and
there's a potential problem if things like the Rarities DVD was uploaded. A
Yahoo group- on the other hand- tends to fly under the radar. Plus it's
certainly been mentioned that POTA doesn't seem to rank very high in the pecking
order, so I'm sure the focus is on the newer theatrical and
television productions.
As far as the first two discs go, I'm sure when the third is ready to be
distributed someone who has the ability to burn copies could be asked to make
you copies of the first two as well.
BTW, I didn't mean for the previous post to come across as dickish as it
sounded. I was overtired that entire day, and instead of chilling out for a
while when I got home I just followed my usual routine. So I apologize if that

It's certainly ambitious, but I have reservations whenever someone thinks
they can take the originals and make improvements. I've yet to see one where the
old and the new gels perfectly. Take the updating of Star Trek TOS. The new
effect shots certainly looked impressive, but they were painfully out of context
to the non-altered shots.
In the case of Space: 1999, I had always thought that Season 2 was the
original attempt to make things snappier. The pacing in Season was often slow
and cerebral (as was in Gerry Anderson's previous program UFO), but that's also
what gave the series it's original charm and identity. When you start
introducing quick edits and flashy explosions, it loses more that it gains in my
opinion. Still, it's someone trying to keep the program in the public eye so I
suppose that's something.

Apes would stand. Are we bigger than Space 1999, Doctor Who, Firefly? We seem to
be smaller than Star Wars, Trek and LOTR, although an awful Apes movie in 2001
virtually matched the box office of the new Trek movie. How do you define
fandom---longevity, numbers, groups, movies and box office? Apes feels like a
massive franchise but our hardcore, fanatic fans, seem relatively few---is that
because Apes is SO well established culturally that we can assume it's safe,
unlike ,say, Firefly? Fandom for shows like The Prisoner, Doctor Who and
craplola like Buffy seems far more militant and, indeed, factional. Is it the
lack of, say, a unified Apes Fan Club, that maybe holds us back a bit?

You know, that's what I felt was the case when looking at pictures of Zira after being informed a while ago on various sites that Zira had blue eyes. Despite that, I felt that maybe I was just wrong and that they were blue; I mean, there are plenty of people in the world who know more than I do (more then I'm comfortable with). ;) Maybe I should believe my own eyes more than Internet sites. Now I'm worried about my apparent sheeplike disposition. ;)
So, how is it that a few sites claim she has blue eyes when they look hazel? For example, from The Sacred Scrolls Wiki site: "Ape actors were usually required to wear brown contact lenses if their eyes were not suitably dark, but Zira remained blue-eyed, as make-up designer John Chambers explained, "We all thought it would add a 'human' touch".[3]" ( http://planetoftheapes.wikia.com/wiki/Zira_%28APJ%29)
