.html.html Yeah, it was good to see Colleen Atwood and Rick Baker get their Oscars on the same night
after 10 years that they got shut out on POTA.
Even seeing Christian Bale getting one after his infamous F-Bombs with Terminator Salvation.
It was a good night filled with redemption.

Yeah, that was definitely "King Kong". For starters, Serkis doesn't play a gorilla in "Rise".
Colleen Atwood also won an Oscar last night (her 3rd?). She did the costumes for POTA2001.
And when they showed the clips from the Governor's Ball they played the "Henry V" music by Patrick "Rise of the Apes" Doyle.

.htmlDVD Beaver gives thumbs up for the blu ray of the James Franco film "127 Hrs.", which hits on Tuesday. Watching it again, some of the establishing hiking scenes did remind me of the Forbidden Zone trek at the beginning of POTA. They filmed some of the exteriors in the place where the real story happened, which isn't too far from where POTA was filmed and it's a similar topography.
Of course, Franco's name seems to be mud at the moment, post-Oscars, but he is a good actor and anyone who wants to examine his chops could do worse than this film. It even has the Oscar-nominated song "If I Rise" (get it, "Rise"?). I don't agree with all the choices they made to liven up the static story but it's good stuff.

Landis says at that point J. Lee Thompson "just didn't care". Well, he sure sounds like he cared in "Behind the POTA" but his hands were tied by the budget. Too bad they couldn't have told Fox, "We made you a lot of money with these so give us a fair shake or we quit". Arthur owned half of POTA so I'm not sure Fox could've made it without him.
Landis also said Arthur wasn't on the set of "Battle" but there's pictures of him in "POTA Revisited".
So, it's fun to hear Landis talk about "Battle" because he was in it but it wasn't very illuminating.

.htmlGreat.
The one time my local independent theater puts one an Ape-a-thon, and
its a week that I'm out of town. Grrr.
Ironically there was an Ape-o-thon when I lived in Montreal as well, and
it was the week right after my son was born, so I missed that one too.
When it comes to Ape marathon movie sessions, I just never get a break.

SO I WILL BE THERE!
I finally get to see POTA on the big screen!

enjoyed the lame Jojo and Frito comedy. I'm still looking for issue #15

Besides, at the time, there was not much of anything new in Ape fandom,
so I was thrilled to stumble upon them.
Perhaps a factor in my lack of disappointment was the fact that I paid
25 cents apiece for almost all of them. ;)

That's good to know, Dario. It does sometimes feel like I'm the only fan of that series, given the amount of trashing it often receives. I know that the artwork was wildly uneven, and that some of the stories fell flat, but by and large, I very much enjoyed it. Alexander, Coure, Jacob, Grunt, Ollo, Dunzell, Moto, Tonus, August Ann Burrows, Mendez X and Carson McCormick were all great characters, and I found several of the storylines to be fascinating.
> I remember that they they were not the best of comics

That I can't deny. It did have some problems as well--mostly in regard to the non-ape-like ape likenesses.

Me, too. Urchak's Folly, Forbidden Zone, Sins of the Father, Countdown Zero, Blood of the Apes, Quitting Time... all gold, in my opinion.
> I actually enjoyed the lame Jojo and Frito comedy.
So do I! And I know that's definitely not a sentiment many share, but those two characters crack me up--finding the bomb shelter containing the Hostess Fruit Pies and the Playboy magazine was hilarious, and their antics with the statue were as well. I'll probably take a lot of flack for saying that. :)

> Perhaps a factor in my lack of disappointment was the

That's funny, because that was true for me as well. In 1994, my wife and I drove up to Canada for a week, and while there, I came across a local comic shop. While looking around, I found all 50 issues for a quarter apiece, so I ended up coming home with the entire Malibu line for less than $13. Upon returning to New York, I read them all over a two-day period and loved them... well, most of them, anyway. I could have done without Ape Nation, Ape City and the seances to reanimate Breck and Caesar.

What are comics? For me, and I include the graphic novel, the term comic generally implies a juvenile, simple-minded plot created to appeal to an adolescent mind.
Looks to me like that is what BOOM is going to deliver, that's probably what will sell the most, and that's probably what I'll mostly ignore.

Even though it doesn't bother me that the spaceship is now generally referred to as Icarus, I never forget that it's not really its name and that the naming of Taylor's craft was a detail PLANET's makers didn't think necessary.
Icarus is an apt term for what seemed to be the common fate of all the spacecraft in the POTA series, but as an actual name for a flying craft, it's kind of stupid.

.htmlIt's too bad you don't like the comics form. I agree, most comics are juvenile, but then again, so are most movies, most novels, most TV - most everything created to be pop-culture art is below par. The format of comics themselves is no better or worse than any other format. And comics are capable of creating Maus, Stuck Rubber Baby, Watchmen, Dark Knight, Blankets, Contract with God, and other towering and touching works.
I promise, I'm gonna buy these books, and if they truly don't work, I'll be the first to admit it. But personally, comics is one of my favorite storytelling mediums, and I'm happy as a pink little monkey that we've got new POTA on the way in any form.

doing a new SW story to suddenly think it'd be cool to draw Yoda as an ultra
lean 6 foot tall creature... That extreme wouldn't work, and drastic changes to
the APES look doesn't work either... I mean if they'd be doing their own
"new" take on the APES name (like the 2001 film did), then fine draw whatever
you want, but if you're advertising it as being in the original vein, then
it should fit in with that look/style...
As far as playing around, that could be good or bad... A little mixing it
up might be okay, but there was too much "playing around" with the APES name
with a lot of the original MARVEL stuff and way too much in the ADVENTURE
series.... I'd rather have nothing if it means we're gonna end up with things
comparable to APE-SLAYER, APE-NATION, or what TERROR quickly degenerated
into... ***

.htmlTy, I agree with every word you say. I think it's all too easy for people to dismiss the entire comics industry as a medium, but it doesn't make any sense. It's like saying all books are juvenile, or all movies, or all TV shows. Some of the most intelligent and powerful books I've ever read have been illustrated--and Alan Moore has written a number of them. (Imagine what HE could do with a Planet of the Apes comic. His Star Wars comics were some of the best I've ever read.)

Some comics are juvenile. Some novels are juvenile. Some movies are juvenile. Some politicians are juvenile. Many comics, however, are anything but juvenile.Apart from obvious stuff like Maus, Watchmen,From Hell et al, there are many stories within the much maligned superhero genre that are jaw dropping.Way back in the early 80s, Chris Claremont's seminal 'God Loves,Man Kills' was an X-Men tale that explored racism.A few years ago, a story about Magneto called 'Testament' was hailed as a sincere and moving exploration of the Holocaust.Batman's 'The Killing Joke' or 'Arkham Asylum' are as disturbing and upsetting as any modern movie thriller.Comics actually underpin most cinema offerings today--not just in terms of origin material but because they are the storyboard technique used to plot, pace and map out a movie---many films are simply animated comics, in reality. In Apes, I've seen reviews that describe Future
History Chronicles as 'mind searing'--and it is.It's brilliant.Comics are not, nowadays, 'juvenile'.They're a great medium for accessible and, indeed, affordable storytelling. You're missing out if you buy the 'juvenile' myth.John, Scrolls.

At least that list had "Lolita" on it, so I know it's not totally crap, but I notice that not only isn't Boulle's POTA on it, but not even "The Bridge Over The River Kwai."
As for "Watchman"... it just doesn't appeal to me. Anything with a superhero, with fantastic powers... that's just kid stuff to me. Haven't been into it since I watch "Superman" repeats with George Reeves back in the sixties.
I'm a kid of the sixties. To me, superheroes are camp, like the "Batman" TV series. I just can't take it seriously.

BTW.... back in '68, Time magazine called PLANET "not much better than an average episode of "Star Trek." I've never trusted Time since.

Because there's an army of geeks out there with hardons for Spiderman. I don't get it, but there it is. What can I say? Our culture is in the crapper. When serious literary critics think superhero fiction is great literature, well, it's time for the apes to take over. They couldn't do much worse.

Taylor had his own name for the spaceship. It was called "Get Me Off This Damned Planet #2," and you can guess what the #2 stood for.

.htmlBack in the day a lot of people thought of POTA as "kids' stuff" (some still do). That's why the budgets for the sequels were so low. I'll take each story as it comes and not have preconceived notions, except about the past work of the people involved. I agree there's too much superhero stuff these days but there's a big difference between "The Fantastic Four" movie and "The Dark Knight".

<.html

searing'--and it is.It's brilliant.Comics are not, nowadays, 'juvenile'.They're a great medium for accessible and, indeed, affordable storytelling. You're missing out if you buy the 'juvenile' myth.John, Scrolls.

.htmlSee, to me, it seems more than a little ridiculous to say that comic books are for kids and not to be taken seriously when we're on a discussion group devoted to films and TV shows about talking apes. It's kind of like a person with greasy hair insulting a person with bad acne for being unattractive.

franchise... They probably have a built in audience now and the website is there to
not only promote the forthcoming film but to keep the interest sparked all
around... APES has been pretty "dormant" for the last ten years, but if ROTA
is a hit and generates a renewed following for APES, then FOX might do a
website? And if nothing else, the films "star" is getting enough (over)exposure
so that might help in the end... If people aren't sick of Franco by
November that is...***

.html If the new film does better than our wildest dreams and revives the franchise (vile word) can a broadway show be far behind?
And I don't mean a show with stupid death-defying stunts, a crappy score by U2 or a Simpsons musical parody.
I'm talking about gorillas on horseback galloping down the aisles, Icarus crashing into a humumgous water tank and Taylor screaming "Damn you all to hell" to a life-sized Statue of Liberty as the lights go down.
Not a staged comicbook, but a kick-ass operatic rendition of the first film with a stage full of damned dirty apes.
And get Charlie Sheen to play Taylor. I hear he's available. "Me against apes? Duh, winning! I've got Ursus blood and Zaius DNA, dude."
This is happening people, don't doubt it for a second. You heard it here first. <.html

Well, them's fightin' words young man.I'm proud to say I rejoice in the fact that I'm a total Spider-Man geek and have been for four decades now.In fact, last year, I had a letter printed in Amazing Spidey, complaining about him being portrayed getting drunk and having casual sex(so, so childish, that).Peter Parker is one of the great, great literary creations of the 20th Century and the first Spidey movie was a success because of Peter, not any special effects. If you've never read The Death of Gwen Stacy, or read the heart wrending death of Harry Osborn, you've missed out on some true drama.Shakespeare used witches and ghosts as literary devices to tell a story and the superhero medium is just a framework for telling stories. After all, isn't the original Planet of the Apes using Apes as a device to tell a story about Man? The bonus with comics is that you can get some great art too.Ask Ty--he gave us an ass on the Black Cat a
little while back that still makes me grin.John, Scrolls.
